My favorite song of all time, too. SMiLe is my favorite album. I never knew it was a thing until the GV box set came out in 1993. I'd bought the 45 in 1967, but the BB kind of faded away for me until 1974, when PS was re-released on Brother with the brown cover.
I hadn't bought PS in 1966. The existing rock press declared the BB over and done with, and like so many others, I believed them. But I bought all the 45s, and then in 1972, Surf's Up. Wild Honey, 20/20, Friends and Smiley Smile were re-released as two-fer LPs, and I bought all of those, and enjoyed them. But I didn't know what Smile was until 1993, and oh, what a great, great time I had listening to it on GV disc 2.

I'm so glad people have finally caught on to the genius and brilliance of Brian . Especially in his lifetime . The only rock / pop artist who could be put on the same pedestal as Mozart , Bach and Beethoven . The Beatles were amazing and I'm a huge fan but none of them could do the things Brian was doing back then .

Still the Beatles catalogue is far superior.
I always here this argument from beach boys fans that taken singularly Wilson is the better musichan and although I agree he was the superior producer and probably had more musical knowledge, but the number of outstanding songs both bands put out doesn't even compare.

@@emanuelebelle3943 The Beatles had three songwriters, plus someone else serving as an arranger and producer. Plus, they basically kept at it through '69 whereas by the second half of '67, Brian was withdrawing. I sure would hope their output of outstanding songs would eclipse one man who did all of those tasks himself in a shorter span.
Putting the Smile album into the context of the period of when it was supposed to be released (Dec 1966, with delays through the end of May 1967), it would have blown everyone away. That was a big part of the reason they fell out of favor like a sinking rock after it was shelved. The build up of anticipation for the new sound, all of the talk about what was coming from so many sources, then many hearing Brian sing Surf's Up on Leonard Bernstein's CBS special, and then poof, gone! Add to that the cancellation of their appearance at Monterrey Pop Festival. They quickly became passé. It became accepted it was all hype, and with all the rapid changes in '67 in music and society, they were looked upon as so yesterday. It certainly didn't help that Smiley Smile was, as Carl Wilson so aptly put it, "a bunt instead of a grand slam" with a number one single on it which by that point was a year old.
If Brian had the support from the band that he needed, what could have been? That's the question to this very day, and one that's been asked by many over the last 57 years.

As Brian Wilson once said when he heard Strawberry fields forever. "They got there first." Sorry but the Fab 4 were always one step ahead of the Beach Boys. Brilliant as Brian Wilson is, the Beach Boys were not as united as the Beatles at that time and Brian didn't have the backing of the others to pull off SMiLE the way he wanted. Rubber Soul was the LP that inspired Brian to do Pet sounds.

Brian would have had a 1, 2, Punch with Pet Sounds and then SMiLE a year later. Sadly Brian said it would've taken him over a year still to finish SMiLE by the time he decided to shelve it , Seemingly forever. Which doesn't suprise me honestly, Considering this song took over 20 recording sessions to complete over a few months time. I cant even fathom what SMiLE could've been like had it been completed and not rushed for release or shelved. Even the songs that weren't even halfway completed give me goosebumps, Like Wind Chimes or Love To Say Dada. The SMiLE sessions cuts of thise tunes that were released seem like half finished, Lyrically that is.

In Jr. High I only knew 4 or 5 The Beach Boys songs.
I am 61 and 'cause of you tube I found a lot of great songs.
Pet Sounds and Smile. Pure Genius.
In 83 I bought an album.
Dazzle Ships by OMD. (with this album they lost lots of fans)
They became my favorite band (OMD for the next James Bond song).
And yes I fell in love with The Beach Boys.

I never really cared for Beach Boys growing up. Now in my mid 30's, I heard this song several times on Sirius Radio while driving 12 hours on vacation to, obviously the beach...this song played at least 5x there and back, didn't listen to it at first, but gave it a try and....wow...nothing else to add, this band is borderline majestic. These guys are a whole vibe, so beautiful, makes me almost sad that the boys behind this sweet sound are no longer with us. So thankful for my maturity, and the sense to truly appreciate works like this.
