What a clear and concise explanation. Throw towards target and not at ball. Brilliant. I love this place.
Me too! 😀👌👍
Love Shawn’s enthusiasm and total belief in his teaching beliefs - fantastic coaching buddy keep them coming 😍
Thank you! Will do!
Simple and clear. You are such a good teacher.
Thank you! 😃

Thank you for taking the time to comment Thomas! 👌👍🫶
Before I discovered Shawn’s page, I had several swing thoughts I learned on other videos along with “hit the ball.” Hitting the ball so much better now just “throwing the club.” One thought !! Thank you
What a great feel that is too huh? Just chuck it! 😀👊👌
👍 agree totally
Been watching your videos for a long time and I’ve got to say this one struck the right chord in my swing brain. I have a practice area in my back yard where I can safely hit nerf balls. I went out, practiced throwing my club at a target a couple of times, then looked at the target and visualized throwing my trail elbow at it. Hands out of the equation except to connect arms to club. Highly successful efforts followed. Like many average players I tend to get ball bound and my hands go at it. I hope I can continue to follow your prescription!
You bet Doc! On our premium channel we have an amazing series to get a deeper understanding of this called “2 pendulum swing series” and then you want to see “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” and then “the goldilocks series” to make the proper predictions on how the ball is in the way of this action and fine tune with “pre motor cortex series”
Shawn I've forgotten how good a coach you are. I'm going to watch you throughout the winter to get me back on track👍
You bet Richard! get on our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com where we have 2 amazing off season training series that you can follow every week for 20 weeks without missing a beat if you take a break and go play!
Super, easily understood video. You absolutely make everything look so easy. I love it.
So glad!
The right elbow coming down quickly to where it touches your belt and is ahead of the club seems to be absolutely essential yet often the most overlooked and hardest to do for the mid to high handicap or senior player. If done right, the right hand comes down even with or slightly behind the right shoulder. If the right hand comes down out past the right shoulder it will throw off the entire swing, cause both hooks left and pushes right.
Happens all by itself with human anatomy when throwing the club through to the target to the right of an intermediate point; see “throw the club straight shawn clement” and get cracking on this with old clubs and a very safe area away from cars, people and houses!
@@golflessons It no doubt will happen automatically if one swings back as freely as you do. I can sense that on the occasions when I do so. But despite having played for over 62 years and tried hard to develop a correct swing, its not always easy for this 83 year old body to do it. It takes relaxing, letting momentum develop fully, giving it time. But its so easy to forget, to tense up, to rush the transition, to start down without fully turning back so you come over the top. Have to focus more on this. Even if I can’t be throwing my only set of irons out on the field at the driving range !! Too risky to retrieve them under fire. 🤦♂️😁
@@johnatchley9754 this is where you would love our “pre motor cortex series” on our premium channel at WISDOM IN GOLF PREMIUM.COM which shows you that what you hold in your mind before you swing is of massive consequence to how the body will flow; your state of body is very different when you are being careful to “not do” or go somewhere vs being clear about the shot, and getting ready to feel a good flow of momentum delivering a nice release into the direction you want to start the ball with ease and velocity.
One of my faves of all ur videos Shawn, many thanks!
Such a great feel! Like releasing a lasso onto the steer’s horns and going for a ride to the target!!😀😎
Shawn this is probably GREATLY oversimplifying, but sometimes when I hear you talk about the psychology of how you should be focused more on the idea of "throwing the club at the target" (rather than aiming to hit the ball), it makes me think that just appreciating that idea might make immediate changes in a person's golf swing. I feel like this idea has unlocked something in my head, and I look forward to taking the idea to the range to see how it affects things. I'm a newer golfer, and think this will help shape how I approach my swing. Thank you for your work and all the advice you share here.
COMPLETELY AGREE!! This is what makes the ball a very precise intersection instead of the chaotic target!!
@@golflessons “a precise intersection” - brilliant!

Thanks 👍

Shawn I love your videos and I’ve improved my game immensely since discovering your channel. However, I struggle with getting the ground in the golf swing. I will take these lessons to the range today to see if I can improve this area. Thanks for everything.
How are you doing now?
Great video! Loving this vertical takeaway with my driver & 3-wood especially. More distance too!
More like this coming soon!👍💥👊thank you for your comment! On our premium channel, you want to see “backswing levitation”, “garage door drill”, “The trowing series” and the “perpetual motion drill series”
Brilliant as always cheers Shawn. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yessir! 👍👍
Finally committed to swinging this way and it has been a game changer! It goes against ALL conventional teaching of the golf swing....yet makes more sense than all others combined! I have come to realize that the golf swing is all about semantics and how one decides to interpret and discuss it. However, at the end of the day, anatomy and physics will win out over what a coach "thinks" will work. Great stuff!
Super fantastic comment on a Saturday morning! Thank you and it is also the best for bridging the gap for neck up fitness! 👊🫶👌
He is so amazed with his swing!!!!
Yes!! Isn’t the human machine amazing? Match that to golf and it’s heaven! 😀👍
Shawn, a huge fan of your work and this approach, I tried for ages to get this right but it wasnt quite working. Then I got a lesson from a teacher here in Australia who is a lot like you. What he taught me was that in throwing the club to the target I was, without realising it, holding the face square to the path, not the arc. He got me throwing a bucket to him like a rugby halfback would, wrists rolled automatically. As soon as I let the club release to the left I shot my best round ever. I am off 23. Maybe others are missing this too ?
He just showed you how to throw into a release; yes! Our premium channel has a whole section on the release and throwing different lengths of clubs in the “throwing series”. Now that you are releasing the anatomy, you have more speed and more abandon of control and defrosting your action!
I have always found that the most important part of the swing starts at the 'back swing levitation', like the baseball player. Thank you for these clear and precise explanations. I'm going to subscribe to the Premium Chanel this winter to practice in my garage in Quebec.
Nice! looking forward to your comments! 👍👌
Got a little lost on the course today with my swing, and immediately went to the “fencing for power” drill. Guys playing with me didn’t know what to make of me slashing the sword..lol. Parred the next four holes . It works!!! Took my mind off all the clutter and back on the target…or as Shawn says” where the money is..) The Great Canadian Coach. Cheers from Nova Scotia. Mike.
Good stuff Mike! No more “i lost my swing” crap! Slash through to your targets with momentum and ease and find that swing EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU STEP FOOT ON THAT GOLF COURSE!!👌👍🫶💪👊
Thank you for this. I prefer the vertical swing over the traditional swing because i like doing a straight line swing. Gave you a sub!
Yes sir! And wait till you see the new series on premium coming out this week on the golf swing’s DUAL PENDULUM SYSTEM which requires a more vertical swing for peak efficiency and performance!
Great stuff Shawn!!!!!!
I have a similar swing to Matt Wolf and what you’re discussing in this video. My club goes outside and very steep on the backswing, then I redirect on the downswing and I’m in great positions at contact. I usually get lots of remarks from playing partners because it looks so odd, but they don’t say too much about the results because I’m able to compress the golf ball and hit it pretty straight. I’m glad you’re discussing another way of hitting the golf other than just the traditional method!! 👏🏼
What they don’t know is your way is far better!! Bubba, Jack, Wolffy, Doug Ghim, Justin Thomas, Fred Couples and dozens more!
I did that for 30 years of single figure golf but after a lot of comments from people at a a new club i tried to change it - no more gone back to what works not what people think is a good swing
Yes, as I work towards becoming an excellent grass whipper, I can feel how more upright my swing needs to be compared to my “old” swing.
Definitely feel this when doing the axe drill.
Feels much more fun to do a golf swing as a task instead of individual parts.
Let the evolution continue! 🫶👍👌
Great video. Finally beginning to understand “throwing the club” and cutting through the dandelion stem”. Thanks. Have often heard that the trail elbow should point down to the ground at top of backswing and not be a “flying elbow”. Do you get more power with vertical backswing?
Huge!! The elbow position you describe WOULD NEVER WORK FOR BASEBALL HITTING OR THROWING OR TENNIS SERVES OF SKIPPING STONES ON WATER ETC!! Just a bunch of fear mongering teachers telling you that you are defective and to watch out you don’t make any mistakes!! Enough of that bull!!
Great advice. Thank you so much!
Shawn, what I don't understand, and I'm sure I'm not alone on this, is that I would use the hammer and the axe correctly without thinking about it. I'm a tennis teaching pro so for me, the same holds true with the serve. What is it that causes the disconnect for so many of us in golf? Is it the effort incorrectly trying to generate more club head speed? Is it that the damn ball is just sitting there? why does my gravity genius of a brain shut down when swinging a club???????? Inquiring minds want to know!
Best question I have heard. I can also do all those other sports without thinking about it. what makes golf different?
Ok Kevin! When I say to you, 2nd serve, left side of the left service box, you have a picture, a sound and a feel for all of it right? So when you toss the ball up and your eyes are on the ball, are you trying to hit the ball or deliver it with that feel into that picture?
When I draw the ball, it is like a second serve moving through the intermediate point and into the direction I want to start the ball with the sound, feel and look of a draw.
I love your videos and appreciate your generosity. Why in the finish is your club so high as opposed to the classic club through the neck finish (like Rory for instance)? Just wondering. Keep up the great work!
Hi Bob! High finish like Bubba Watson and Jack Nicklaus and many others like Justin Thomas too? When the arms get pulled away from the body they rise up; it is the way to dissipate the energy to not get hurt; and everyone has their own way of doing it. The key is to have a nice flow of momentum to deliver an action that collects the ball from where it lies and sends it into the direction you want it to fly.
@@golflessons thanks for the quick reply. I’m a low ball hitter and one of the things I’ve been working on is a high finish. I’m only 5’ 7” and stocky so it doesn’t come naturally. You’re a tremendous help.
@@bdcava Hey Bob, you bet! Lots of shorter guys with high backswings and finishes like Abraham Answer and Tom Watson! You need to get with my premium channel and see these titles:

So glad you think so M.! 👍👌👊🫶
@@golflessons Honestly I had dozens of golf instructional videos tabbed; I just deleted all of them except this one and your video on the grip. I was hitting my 4 iron 245 today because of having a high target in the sky and just throwing the club to it. The only handful of bad swings I had were because of poor focus.
Once again, I love your approach. Do you have any suggestions for eliminating tension in the arms and shoulders? I have so much trouble with that, and it causes a lot of problems, preventing me from swinging with ease.
On our premium channel we have several amazing tasks for you to develop your swing with; then we have series like “unstoppable momentum series” and videos like “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” together with all the “release” videos that are sure to release that tension WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT!!! Like if your full time job, 8 hours a day, was to slash through bamboo shoots in the jungle, would you do that with tension and strain? You wouldn't last an hour!
Wow that opened up the eyes!
So cool how we are already designed for greatness huh?? 👍👌👊💪
What’s cool is when you realize what the lesson is teaching! Even cooler is putting it into action.
Another great vid Shawn! I think there's some power to be gained by letting the club shallow from vertical. Nice divots also. Club barely digging in at all. Hard to do this with an over the top swing.
And another one has found wisdom!! 👍👌🫶👊💪
Another excellent video, when I do what you just did 40% of the time I hit behind the ball, what I’m I doing wrong ? thank you.
See “throw the club straight shawn clement”
@@golflessons thank you, I will.
Can someone get shallow or fix an over the top swing if they have limited trail shoulder mobility? My right (trail) shoulder cannot get externally rotated even with PT or stretching.
The Shoulder does not have much mobility to start with when you bring the hands together to take your grip! Could you cut grass along the ground or cut down a tree with and axe or driver a nail horizontally into the wall with a hammer? Then you can send a ball to a target without coming over the top.
Good explanation. This is what Ben Hogan also explains.
Glad you think so!
Great video as always Shawn! Question are you aiming the club face at your final target you want the ball to land and your shoulders and feet along the line you want the ball to start or are aiming the club face on the line you want the ball to start and releasing down the same line?
nonono; we want to look at this in a DYNAMIC way; you take dead aim, play the ball a hair back of centre (irons) and release to the right of the IP; if the face is closed enough (EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND RELEASES DIFFERENTLY) then the ball will draw back to the end target.
@@golflessons Got it! Thanks! Shot 39 on Torrey North the other day. Blur drill and Goldie Locks all the way! Love it! Only got to play 9 though! Haven’t shot 39 in a long time! Thanks for awesome videos and responses!
Wow what a key, I've been setting up more like this but without the understanding/feel of leading with the elbow, when linking the elbow the strong grip makes perfect sense and it's like night and day! Going to work this in as it ties my recent changes together.
This is absolute gold!!!
Fantastic!
I've been "experimenting" with a Matt Wolfe style swing and am finding my strikes are crisper and ball flight is higher. My accuracy surprises me, because the "feel" of this backswing is so different, though comfortable. It feels more like I am taking the club away with my trail elbow and have less involvement with my hands. The backswing position seems to always get in a good place as to where I can throw the club. This old dog may have found a new trick? Or do you see more merit in the traditional style vertical backswings such as yours, Jack's, Bubba's etc?
Run with it Bill! completely fine! could also be a nice blend of interpretation and can simply be like Bubba and Jack compared to where you were! 👌👍
Is leading with the back elbow the one key to shallowing the club, to dropping the club inside, to staying below the plane line. Please respond. Thank you sincerely.
Yes! See “throw the club straight shawn clement” and “flying elbow shawn clement” as well as “shallow the club shawn clement”
Hi Shawn, can you do a video about leg placement and movement. I noticed your left leg always has this bend to it
I have so MANY!! search “ground forces shawn clement wisdom in golf”
@@golflessons awesome. Thanks again
I'm using the suggested strong grip and swinging out to aim point (right of target for righthander draw), but I'm leaving a high percentage out to the right. In other words, a push. Any ideas??? Is my head moving forward? Are my wrists not rolling? Is my trail elbow leading too much? Thanks and stay safe.
Hey Charles!
1-we need to understand and feel what a full release is; see “fencing for power shawn clement” as an easy exercise to get the feel instantly
2-see “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement”
3-confirm that you are staying with a nice throwing whip-release in the direction that is right edge of intermediate point
4-if you can confirm 3 in a row and the ball goes right and does mot turn, CLOSE THE FACE UNTIL IT DOES.
On our premium channel, those videos would be all the “release” and then “predict contact and the “goldie locks series” and then the “throwing series” and then the “alignment reload” and “arc blur of club” series and finally the “target confirmation series”
www.wisdomingolfpremium.com
I like the analogies but would suggest the trail shoulder might actually be considered more as leading with the elbow/ arm trailing and providing a place for the trail upper back muscles to release through that chain. Worth some experienced consideration I think. Love the channel!
Part of the kinetic chain for sure! especially if you are trail side dominant!
"Stay" with the task, not the positions!
Brilliant
Yeah Man! You got the gist! 👍😀👊👌💪
Great stuff Shawn
I’ve been getting a few swing lessons down here in NYC
All my instructor tells me is that my “hands are to high” and they’re not on plane with the shoulders in the backswing
I find that it’s very uncomfortable to try and get a full turn when trying to keep my hands less vertical and I’m getting worse not better
Show them Bubba, Justin, and see Doug Ghim!! That will make their head freakin’ spin!
DJ Trahan swing as taught by his father Don. But this is perfectly explained. Worth trying.
What if you are someone who tends to hook the ball too much when swinging this way? Is there something I should focus on?
Of you are throwing the club well through the ball and into the direction you want to start the ball and the peak speed is well past the ball and towards the target and you are still hooking; then simply open the face more before you start the swing.
Shawn another great video you always make it so easy to understand🏌️♂️
Thanks 👍
Elbow always leads 👍 When you really throw that club your swing looks different. I mean your release looks wider. With ball your normal swing looks more anchored and flat footed. So if i'm filming my swing, that throw drill can look different than normal swing?
the reason why there is anchoring is because I am now throwing through a specific and precise intersection where the ball and intermediate point are.
@@golflessons So just different focus change hole swing without thinking body parts. That is ingenious 👍👍
Hi, Shawn love all your videos - I subscribe to your youtube channel- My question is…..my contact 90% of the time it great, BUT my divots are to deep-- need help any videos on this problem? 6 ghin
Yes! this is tilt or side bend! like skipping stones on water; of you don’t tilt enough, you have submarines instead! 😝😝
See all the “tilt shawn clement”videos as well as “shallow downswing shawn clement” videos
Should the back leg straighten all the way?
No, and you should never think about how much bend in the legs; this is not a place for the conscious mind at all. See an oldie but goodie called “create serious speed shawn clement” and “kettle bell drill shawn clement” on youtube and then you should definitely check out my premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and see the updated versions of this without thinking with the following series:
-the throwing series
-the kinetic chain and kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series (huge for getting the feel of that powerful ground force completely naturally!)
-then polish that release with all the “release” videos so that when you throw into the direction of the target, your body knows how to get out of the way to achieve maximum efficiency!
Great instruction Shawn. To complement this read Byron Huff's "Be the Target" published in 1996. Fred Shoemaker's "Extraordinary Golf" published 1996 also. To my knowledge the first teacher to talk about throwing clubs as a way to feel the swing was Jack Burke, Sr., the "father of Texas golf," and the father of Masters and PGA winner Jackie Burke, Jr., back in the 30s I believe.
Sweet!! 👌👍🫶
Shawn, you need to check out the JuJu swing.
Saw it, it is a good way to swing but their delivery is another set of body part buffets that are a pain in the rear to apply; THAT is what does mot work! Matt Wolfe has a superb action and simply needs to be left out of the “your defective parts are…and the fix is…”; this is the farce of golf instruction or any other kind of instruction for that matter.
This is such good stuff. This must be why my shorter clubs are so much easier. they naturally go stright up. ling clubs feel like they want to fall down during the backswing
Very common! On premium you would see “backswing levitation” and “garage door drill” as well as “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” and “shawn’s Favourite drill” and “perpetual motion drill series”
@@golflessons 👍
I find it easier to get this feel with shorter clubs. The longer the club the more uncomfortable I am taking it vertical
Throwing the club is the best drill ever!!!
Yeah man! 👌👍👊💪
Excuse me,but a carpenter is aiming at the ball, just doesn’t need to use his body to drive the nail. If you told him he only gets one hit to drive it all the way,The nail was oriented 90 degrees from his feet, and it was a long nail,he. might come over the top and of course bend the nail instead of drive it all the way. Lumber jack, golfer need to use their bodies,so many options. Clearly your method works, but not sure its most efficient in terms of club head speed to reduce amount rotation required,ie strong grip. and replace it with vertical potential energy,ie a more vertical back swing, for everyone. I’ll give it a try and let you know if it works for me. I’m 66,consider myself very flexible and fit, driver swing is 105 MPH,with a very relaxed neutral grip swing, and usually hit the fairway about 250 carry when solid. So can play all day long (54 holes)without feeling tired or sore the next day. Which is the major problem i have when i really try a more body driven approach. Again I’ll try and let you know.
I would call it, the zero gravity position. (Back swing with vertical shaft). I tried it, and boomed it i7 could 170yds to 200yds.
Great name! Love it! 👍👌🫶
I notice that you flex your knees at address more than what is traditionally taught. That must be a benefit? Hmmm love the content.
Big time! We are designed to do this when being athletic! Straight legs is for being still to manipulate things like a dentist or surgeon; but lumberjacks need legs to heave the axe! See our premium channel and watch “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” and “unstoppable momentum series” and “kinetic chain series” and “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series”
Thanks !!!!
It’s so absurd how I watch other peoples videos and they don’t touch on this stuff then I have my own thoughts about it look at your channel and boom there’s another video exactly on what I was just thinking about. My thoughts were a little bit different on this though I thought it weirdly feels natural for me to sweep the club way outside then back inside. Like extend everything out then connect if I explain it right. Stop at the impact position twist the club until it’s dynamically straight and there’s your golf swing.
Feel like it goes outside in the backswing, but for the vast majority it is just less inside than what they are used to; see “how to match backswing to target shawn clement”
cant believe you're trying to teach such a steep backswing. no one swings like this on tour
Jack Nicklaus, Bubba Watson, Matt Wolfe, Justin Thomas, Kenny Perry, Doug Ghim, and the list goes on and on and on!!! OPEN YOUR EYES AND MIND!!!!
That would be too steep for driver though wouldn't it?
No, not one bit!! The club shallows naturally when you throw it towards a target INSTEAD OF AT THE BALL!! See “throw the club straight shawn clement” and “shallow the club shawn clement”
Frankly I dont like these analogies with hammer, tennis, baseball, etc...Golf has a couple of fundamental differences to those activities that makes it unique. 1st) The the ball is static (one may say it is simpler but it uses a completely different brain/muscle circuit to aim and hit it) and 2) and most importantly, the ball is on the ground which means misses are very high cost for the body because you may hit the ground and it will hurt you. That fear creates tension and resistance and that is why people come over the top despite being anatomically awkward. It is your brain trying to avoid you hitting this heavy object on the ground before the ball... hence you dont commit to the swing. The question is, how can I swing back and ensure I will get that club face to the very same location it left from?
i love and both hate this video. I can see that Shawn is correct . I have never been able to swing a baseball bat properly, but i have got a good throw. My low iq brain just cant figure how to apply it to a golf swing. Its 100% intent driven and i have for many more years than i care to admit searched for what on earth intent and movement Shawn is doing here. I think something is going on that i find so counter intuitive that i will probably never make it. I dont feel ball focused. I just used to make a swing arc and let the ball get in the way. In baseball there isnt even a static ball and i still chop ott. Im UK so only swung a baseball bat a few times. I even went on baseball training videos to see if there was a clear explanation,. Sadly there is not. They do diagnose it as what they call a bar swing. They go on to say that most kids will naturally pick up a bat and have this fault. Have you got any videos of someone like me that you have taught this intent to? Id pay to see them. The secret is the throw action and sling as he says. I honestly think im never going to understand how to apply that to a golf swing. I cant believe how little grasp i have of it. The action literally looks like some sort of Harry Potter spell. I mean i have not even the slightest notion of even where to start that motion. Is it truly to target? always thought it might start behind or some crazy angle to begin with. if it was actually to target i would like to think id be onto it by now. maybe im just too dumb.
Baseball is not a good analogy for golf.
BASEBALL IS FANTASTIC FOR GOLF!!! Same exactly human machine and same kinematic sequence!! And this is confirmed with neurologists and kinesiologists and bio mechanists!!
nice clip,,need to lose the nursery music
Top composer did that for us, very happy with it!
This video should be banned. It makes hitting great shots far too easy. Ball goes like a bullet to the target.
