    Eleven years later and this information still holds, I’m new to photography and got a bit discouraged by this model camera and my low level capabilities. But this video helps me learn, function and navigate a little better! Thank you!

      Hi Chayla, same with me. How is it going now? Have you made photo's? alsoI felt so intimidated and confused by the camera and all the settings. But luckily I found Tom's video :) Thanks to you Tom I feel enthusiastic again. Thank you so much. I will watch part 2 too. Tom, may I please ask a little thing?       It’s ok, but not amazing. Use it until you find its weakness, don’t upgrade just for the sake of it though.

    A good friend recommended this camera for me and after seeing your video I completely understand why he did!
    I love that the camera clearly states what pictures you may take in the easy mode. It allows you time to become comfortable with actually using it and to work your way up to an advance level. Thank you so much for this detailed video!

    Just purchased it online. This is the most helpful video among any other d3100 tutorial videos. You just tell us straight basic thing on how to take a good photo.

    I always wanted to get into photography but always made the excuse not to. My friend passed away and she left me with a red version of one of these cameras to start what I wanted to do years ago but I had no idea what I was doing with it haha. I know it's an old video but still helping people! Thank you sir.

    I've had my D3100 for a few months and the longer I have the camera and practice with it, I learn a little more. I've watched this video before and today have watched it twice and everything makes so much sense now! Tom does an excellent job of teaching and I will refer to this tutorial when I need it. Good job Tom!

    Just want to thank you for the time you spent, and great detail you put into these D3100 videos, i just got my first dslr , after using a point and shoot for many years,i was really nervous about learning all that it has to offer, and not being able to pick it up and get my moneys worth, but your videos are really helping me understand not just this camera, but more importantly how to use it and get a really nice photo.

    Yes there is. Go to the spanner icon and select reset setup options. You can also go to the shooting menu which is the camera icon and select reset shooting options for a soft reset.

    You use it when you want to control motion, or you have the need or desire for a specific shutter speed. I shoot 90% in aperture priority as its usually depth of field I want to control. Just use whatever mode suits what you are trying to achieve.

    Thanks a bunch:-). Had a bit of bad luck with the camera. Autofocus wouldn't work at all on either lens and I took the camera back to Best Buy and they gave me another Kit. This kit had the 55-200 VR lens whereas the other kit did not. Glad I got the VR!!
    Again, thanks for your fast reply mate!! I'll do as you recommended as fa as Infinity goes. Very excited about that!!

    You need to put the camera continuous drive by moving the small lever beside the mode dial to the 3 squares icon. That's it. The actual Fps will depend on the shutter speed,memory buffer and how you the focus settings set up.

      It's old but still perfectly functional and capable. You don't always need the latest and greatest. I still use my Nikon d700 from 2007! And I also use Nikon film cameras from the 70s and 80s.

    Thank you you are so kind to post this video , I I have been looking for help with learning my d3100 for a long time as I have had it almost 2 yrs and have not been abke to figure all its features n settinfs, I was considering taking a expensive college class for nikon cameras but it seemed so ridiculous to soend that kind of money n felt like I was a dork for beibg so camera illiterate lol!!!     Great video. Very helpful. One problem I’m having is that the camera seems to go into sleep mode within seconds. Then I have to start from the beginning with the menu all over again. Anybody know how to solve this.? Resetting the auto off timer didn’t work.

    my mama had this about 5 years or so but she never used it, I found it and took some pics they were great until my brother messed up the settings and I cant do what i did in the beginning cause i randomly pushed all the buttons, so this is great for me thank u

    I'm very glad that you pointed out that,the first few pictures you take won't be very good.
    Because I thought there was something wrong with the camera!

      There are a few more d3100 videos and general photography technique and theory videos. I always try to answer questions, but I haven’t owned a d3100 for many years so I’m a bit rusty on specific details

    Thanks. I just bought a d3100, and have 3 guide books and the quick start instruction foldout! l.o.l.
    Like this video, too, because you can never look at things from too many angles (as any good photog knows).
    B.t.w., thanks for the tip on the "no flash" icon (on the mode dial)...I happen to be a museum security guard, and know about tellin' people "no flash photography allowed" :-)
