    You saved me from getting gypped by the dealership. They wanted to charge $600 for the harness part and labor. After all, the only the wrong was a loss harness that needed to be secured. Thanks for this video! I've subscribed.

    Thank you so much for showing what all to look for. Thankfully, my issue was simply the wiring harness was not fully connected. A little CRC electronic cleaner and dielectric grease to ensure a continued clean connection, and I'm back to 2 working headlights! Please keep up your great ram truck troubleshooting videos!

    Big Help...THANX.
    Pretty much exactly as you said...except for 3 minor issues.
    My truck is a 2015 RAM 2500 Laramie, 6.4L engine.
    1. One screw on each side of housing cover was rusted(design flaw?)...couldn't remove...had to cut a slot with oscillating tool to remove screw with screwdriver...not too bad unless you don't have that tool.
    2. Harness is a hassle to remove...need to pry gently to remove.
    3. Bought wrong bulb...H11 didn't fit...Sylvania 9012 was perfect match...suggest removing bad bulb and lining up with new.
    Replaced both sides...$35 total.
    Dealer said $145 minimum labor, plus bulb cost.
    Figure I saved at least $210.
    Dealer was 1 week out for service.
    Maybe 3 hours total...DIY.
    Very Helpful.
    Thanx.
    Mark.

    Great detailed video. I fixed mine last night. Only took about 30 minutes. Connector wasn't burned, but the pins fit a little loose in the sockets. I gave the pins a little twist with some needle-nosed pliers and used some dielectric grease. It works great now.

    Thank you for this video and information! It gave me the confidence to go ahead and take my headlight that had both beams not working out and look at the connectors/etc. It was easier than I anticipated it being. Unfortunately, there was no obvious problem, the connectors all looked great, but it's working again after I put a liberal amount of dielectric grease to the connectors and put it back together (hope it stays that way).

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  4 года назад +5

      Chances are that the connector is the issue....we have alot of connection issues with those and the fix thats the cheapest in my opinion and best is to cut the connector out of the circuit and solder the related wires together and use some heat shrink with sealant in it. Thanks for commenting and make sure to subscribe.

    Thanks a million-best video I've looked at for detail, clarity and explanations. I have a 2009 Dodge Ram that every 9-12 months my passenger headlight stops working and I have to access the headlamp assembly, jiggle the wires and voila, they work again. I have taped the heck out of them now at the connectors so maybe this will work for longer. Looks like the only difference in my '09 is that the headlamp assembly has 2, rather than 3 "arms".

    Sub'd. I have to admit, when you talked about issues other than "bulb out", I thought you were just rattling off the usual mechanic schtick to run up the bill ... but you were spot-on (in my case). I watched your video after realizing I'd be better off replacing my own bulb than taking it somewhere. I bought a bulb for my 2012 Ram 1500, assuming my bulb was burnt-out. Before I opened the packaging, I juggled the connection and the light came on; the connection had come loose. You know your stuff and I humbly submit my apology. Sub'd.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 лет назад +2

      No need for the apology. Its a fairly common issue as you just witnessed. I cant tell you how many people replaced the bulb before coming to the shop. We have a few vehicles with connector issues, not all at the headlight....some at the connectors under the seat. None the less.....the method of repair is the same....cut the connector out of the circuit and solder the wires back together. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and also to tell me how it went. Thanks for subscribing as well. Dont forget to check my other videos out....they may help you in the future as well.

    regardless of what some think of THEIR dodge truck, this video on how to troubleshoot a headlight is precise, informative and to the point without a lot of fluff and stalling...... unlike MOST videos here on youtube.
    one thing I would add to the video is to use some dielectric grease on the contacts as this helps keep contact between the pins, and helps dissipate any heat that is produced from a connection that may be less than solid..... important, DO NOT get any grease or fingerprints on the glass part of the bulb

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the support.....your correct that the videos are to inform people and give advice and show repairs. I get people get upset about problems and then want to go on and on about it......the video isnt about that. There is an issue....this is how you can fix it and then move on to driving the truck and enjoying it. I have learned there is no such thing as a perfect car brand. They all have issues and they all use the same suppliers for their parts. The dielectric grease is a great tip that I should have included as well....thanks for pointing that out! Thanks again Greg for watching and make sure to subscribe!

      MotorCity Mechanic I used Sylvania Silverstar H11 and 9005 bulbs with the factory 2-bulb housing in my Big Horn. They're approx. 4000k temperature bulbs, so they appear whiter than stock and im my previous experiences illuminate the road for a greater distance from a slight boost in brightness.

    I have a 2014 3500 that the headlight just went out last night. Looks simple enough when you break it down like that. I get condensation a lot in both headlight assemblies. Had a guy take a tiny drill and drill a hole in lowest part of headlight to drain water. Got this truck last January, had 65K miles on it. Now has 172K miles on it. I run him hard and want to take good care of him.

      @@MotorCityMechanic That's what I'm hoping it is. I don't have $700+ for a new assembly. Have to wait til Monday to fix it, unleas I can do it in the parking lot for Auto Zone and see if they can help me. Could I get that little wiring harness there too if needed?

    • @tonyacrawford8656
      @tonyacrawford8656 2 года назад

      @@MotorCityMechanic Hey. Yeah, it was actually the bulb. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Got that done. Have had to replace a couple bulbs now. So now I have a new issue. On the driver side (luckily I don't have to replace it right now [knock on wood] or I'd be in a big mess), the top 10mm bolt you have to unscrew to take the housing out-spins... The square nut surrounded by plastic is spinning in place. Either I cross-threaded it the last time I changed out the light (I don't think so, but I'm not perfect), or the last place did it. Anyway, how do I get it out? I tried using a pair of small needle nose pliers, but it cracked one side of the little holdy places [that obviously doesn't hold it now], and still spins. I was suggested to use some J-B Water Weld to try to make new side pieces and of course to replace the bolt as well. Do you have a better idea? Do you know what/where I'm talking about?

      I have heard of other youtubers having issues with their employers not being as supportive. I can say I am lucky to have the product at hand so I always have subject matter.....just squeezing in the time to film can be an issue at times. I should make a video of making a video. It can be funny as hell sometimes. Actually got enough out takes and bloopers to put something together. Thanks for watching

    I have a 2011 2500 and have had the headlights out of it a few times. It doesn't require removing the grill on that model year. Two bolts and it pops right out.

      Fault at the quick disconnect to the wire harness to the light.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      Leo Deistler Good job finding it. Thanks for the update. When the issue is at the connector going to the headlamp assembly and not the bulb. I cut the connector out of the circuit and solder the wires back together so no more issues. If you ever have to replace the headlamp assembly then you will have to cut the wires but the odds are very low of ever replacing so this way it cost you no money at all and the light is back to working again.

    Holy Crap Batman!!! You mean that when the day comes that I need to replace a bulb on my 2014 RAM 1500 I'm going to either have disassemble the front end myself or take the truck to a dealer or trustworthy garage to get it done?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 лет назад +1

      Some people take the grill off and others not....but none the less it takes about 5 minutes to get the headlamp off to get to the bulb.....anyone can do it and its simple enough, not as simple as reaching behind to get to the bulb but that would be just to easy.

    The grill doesnt have to come off to access the headlight bolts. A 10 mm wrench for the top bolt, and a long extension/ socket for the bottom bolt. I just replaced both of my headlight bulbs, 5 days apart, within the last week. Although, removing the grill might make it easier to pry and remove the headlight assembly. I did in fact have some difficulty removing it and replacing it with the grill and place.

  • @kubbie1969
    @kubbie1969 4 года назад

    FYI Trucks with projector style headlights don't use this style bulb(uses 9012 for low beam), housing or wiring harness. Removal process is the same though.

    The video probably does no justice to this observation but it looks like under sized wires. Every splice ( aka connector) equals loss which produces heat. I have noticed way undersized wiring on loads of newer vehicles. But awesome video.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 лет назад

      The thing I have noticed is that certain vehicles have certain issues usually relayed to one connector. The Chrysler 200's and Dodge Chargers are known to have an airbag code that sets due to a connector under either front seat. If you just touch it....it will cause the code to go away. Once again just like the Ram headlamp issues.....the cause is a connector. For what ever reason.....it seems to be a pin fitment issue. Once the connectors are cut of out of the harness and the corresponding circuits soldered together.....no more issues. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe Joseph and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

      @@MotorCityMechanic I had water in my headlight. With your video I was able to easily remove it, open the back and allow it to dry out. Then I silicon around the seam. Its been good now for 3 weeks! Thanks so much! It saved me $$$$!

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  5 лет назад

      @@JanetAlexanderJewelry Awesome. If it happens again then remove it and drill a small hole on the lower side out of sight. We might now be able to stop the water from getting in but we will be able to control where it goes and stop it from collecting inside. Much cheaper then replacing the assembly. Thanks for the reply!
