I am not a German but I believe that this video - on top of showing Germany's history in a non-linear fashion (jumping from one period to another, from the distant past to the future) - shows the love-hate relationship Germans have with their Country. :-)

I dont think that this is only related to Germans and their relationship with their country. Every nation has a black spot in history and the problem is mostly that there is no debate about it. Let forget and move on, it seems the slogan for most countrys. But that behavior doesn't solve the problem that it might happen again or even is still alive.

It depends. Music can also be enjoyed just based on the aural experience alone. There is nothing wrong with that. Although for Rammstein in particular all the double meanings and real poetry in the lyrics enhances the experience greatly. But it's not sensible to expect non-German speakers to understand everything they sing. And even with correct translations, a huge portion of the art of the craft of the original language is lost.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before.
PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
    Recommendation for a review:
The band / project "Die Kreatur" and their song "Die Kreatur".
    Greetings 👋🙂🙂😎🙂🙂👋

I am glad you caught on about the song and video within the first few minutes. It is, from an American's view, about their love/hate relationship they have with Germany. They love Germany, but hate the bad things that have happened. As an American I can fully understand.
The are ashamed of the dark parts of their history and want to hide it, but showing it is something that people NEEDS to see so they don't make the same mistakes.

Nice reaction but I don't understand why people don't do the English translated version. The lyrics make this video a masterpiece. I believe people just rub Rammstein off as some shock band with a gimmick.

I'm from Germany so let me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here. First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how most of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic). The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear.
Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies.
Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1989).
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute @ you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945.
The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born.
At minute @ you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completed how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. It's complicated.
With love from Germany 🤘 😎

It is best described by the following line of text.

, your love is a curse and a blessing
Germany, my love I cannot give to you"
PS: The piano music in the credits is the piano version of the song "Sonne". You should definitely listen to it.

Without a doubt Deuchland is one of my top-5 songs by Rammstein. Can't place it on #1 due to personal reasons as I made a rendition of Morgenstern into a poem that gave me a A+ in arts back in highschool and I were told by a friend back then that she read/heard the poem and it helped her step away from suicidal thoughts.. so it can't top that song.
I highly recomend to look up the lyrics after listening to their songs if you are to listen to more.. they often have
a deep meaning. As for Deuchland (as you have seen in other comments) it's a loveletter for your country but not a fully commited one.. and just as love it is complicated sometimes.
If you were to listen to other songs I highly recomend Morgenstern, Mutter, Stein um Stein and Mein hertz brennt.
If you're hooked you may also have a look at the main singers own songs: Till Lindemann. His songs are a little bit creepy sometimes..
Richard Kruspe on one of the guitars also have his own band called Emigrate that have several songs. His songs are more radio-friendly imo but still have a Rammstein feel to them.
-But you have very much to go through by just listening to Rammstein and can go deeper once you're ready and willing. :D

    The African lady depicts :
Our Goddess Germania she the personification of the German nation or the Germans as a whole or to those who speak German by mother language -
Germania as personification is usually depicted as a robust woman with long, flowing, reddish-blonde hair and wearing armor. She often wields the Reichsschwert (imperial sword), and possesses a medieval-style shield that sometimes bears the image of a black eagle on a goldfield. Additionally, she is sometimes shown as carrying or wearing the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire. If you think of Germany`s tragic past you can understand why the Band picked her to portray the Goddess -

Please watch the video with English subtitles!!! Many things would have to be explained because they have a deeper meaning but you get at least 30%. This is a song of the German love-hate-relation to Germany. In contrat to other countries Germans know and keep in mind the bad things in our history. It is no "Land of hope and glory" (like Britain isn't too if Brits were honest) - or these Americans, drunk with self love and patriotism.

Its lyrics are more or less like "you've waited so long, now praise the moment since we're back!" etc 😉 and the song itself is extremely powerful, strong enough to warm up the audience which is crazy even before the band members appear 😃
Please search for "Rammlied 4K" - this particular version includes also the beginning of the show, which is just INSANE! You will love it 😎 And also, you will hear how to correctly pronounce "Rammstein" maaany times 😁

To me, this video is about how difficult it is for Germans (like the band is) to love their nation. There have been some highlights (defeating three roman legions in the Teutoberg forest and firing the first intercontinental missile), but most references are about black chapters. The story itself is framed by Future Space Explorers, who find the remnants of 'Goddess Germania' (the black lady), then scan her history. They find all the references. Then they extract the Leonberger dog breed from her. This German dog breed was almost extinct twice in both world wars. It is closely related to the more famous 'Saint Bernhard' dog: and has the same properties: Leonbergers are very good bois. After extracting the only thing worth while from Germania (the Leonbergers), they dump her into space.
The outro is part of the art. It shows many of the fast moving scenes, but in slow motion, so you can really appreciate the details. Also: the piano version of 'here comes the sun' is sublime, and plays a large part in 'decompressing' the viewer/listener after being bombarded with such high pressure.
The references from history I could find are:
Teutoberg forest: three legions went in: none came out
    Zeppelin era with Hindenburg disaster
Street gang fighting during the Weimar period (between world wars)
Hyperinflation just before ww2 (prices doubled every 10 days, till one bread costed 1.000.000.000.000.000 reichsmark)
The 'Rote Armee Faction' (violent communist coup attempt)
The civil unrest after the war (when there was no housing for the people)
The DDR era (east Germany) being corrupt
The church, feeding of Germany (the cannibalistic scenes), while the common people live in literal hell to provide for that
the church, cooperating with the nazies, the bookburning they did: together.
The nazi era, where they used slave labor while slaughtering the jews to advance to the top of humanity in that time technologically (the v2 missiles)
The only good thing, worth keeping, from Germany is Leonberger dogs: @t they are good bois

The song and video are so full of meaning its impossible to explain it in a comment. If you want to grasp some of it, the black women is "Germania", a personification of Germany. Keep an eye out for how she is treated in the different scences and how she treats the people around her, too.
In the medival scene for example she gets ripped apart by clerics. In the concentration camp scene on the other hand she kills her own people in cold blood. The stars on the clothes tell you for what they are imprisoned and killed- being a jew, being homosexual, having left political views.
Also take a note in how many scenes Germans fight each other. It's mindboggling how long and often Germans foght Germans historically.

"über" means over, one slogan of the Nazis was "Deutschland über allen" which means Germany over all, which was the sick dream of the Nazis to be leader of the world. He plays with this. "Überheblich" = arrogant, "Überlegen" = superior, "Übernehmen" = To take over, "Übergeben" = to hand over, "Überraschen" = suprise, "Überfallen" = assault (like the Nazis did with other countries). The song is about all that stuff which happened why it is is basically not possible for a German to love it's country, because of the past. But he sais the love of the country is curse and belssing. But he can not give his love to Germany (Deustchland). Its not a love song, it describes the critical standing which most of Germans have today concerning national pride, as we should never forget, to which horror it has led...

I have a suggestion if you are listening to Rammstein because they sing all their songs in German. Plus as you listening the lyrics in German, you know the words in German while seeing best translation in English of the lyrics.

One of the most important lines for me is "Übermenschen überdrüssig", which means "tired of over-humans". At that time the Nazis proclaimed Germans as a "master race", Übermenschen, who are above all others and to whom all others have to submit.

They have a piano only album called Klavier it's beautiful don't mix it with a song they have called Klavier which mean piano. Every song they have has a very unique melody that when played on piano it's basically beautiful. This is a great reaction you don't need to understand the word's but when you read into the lyrics most song's have a very vague meaning making it up to the listener come up with their own conclusions to what the song's or videos mean.

Rammstein really uses a lot of symbols in this song. The real meaning only emerges with the lyrics and the video together. You really have to analyze it more closely and then you will understand the deeper meaning. In this song the Middle Ages, the time of the Romans, the GDR - these historical events are presented in different roles. Of course, the theme of the Nazi era and the persecution of the Jews is also addressed, although its presentation does not differ from the style of the other scenes. A constant in the entire video is a woman who appears as a personified Germany in the different epochs. If you know this woman is representing germany and looking to the video again you will see so much more. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless, she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold.
Sometimes as a victim, sometimes as a perpetrator. In the text there are also several sections that contradict each other, e.g. "Will love and damn you". Statements like these express Germany's good and bad sides on the one hand. One of the passages like "so young and yet so old". This means that German history began early. But through certain events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the founding of the GDR through which a new era began for Germany. "one can love you and yet hate you!" It is a question of whether you can be proud of your country or not. "Your love is a curse and a blessing. I cannot give you my love." Germany is aware of the good but also dark times and many see the dark times as so extreme that it is difficult to give your country your love and pride. I must have overlooked a few things in the video, but those are the parts that stand out. I was born and raised in Germany myself and feel the same when it comes to being proud of my country. As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. he short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
    Here the lyrics in english:
You (You have, you have, you have, you have)
Have cried a lot (Cried, cried, cried, cried)
Separated in spirit (Separated, separated, separated, separated)
United in heart (United, united, united, united)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
Have been together for so long (You are, you are, you are, you are)
Your breath's cold (So cold, so cold, so cold, so cold)
The heart in flames (So hot, so hot, so hot, so hot)
You (You can, you can, you can, you can)
    I (I know, I know, I know, I know)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
You (You stay, you stay, you stay, you stay)
    [Chorus]
Germany - my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
    Germany - your breath's cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany!
    [Verse 2]
I (You have, you have, you have, you have)
I never want to leave you (You cry, you cry, you cry, you cry)
One can love you (You love, you love, you love, you love)
And want to hate you (You hate, you hate, you hate, you hate)
    Presumptuous, superior
    Take over, hand over/puke
    Surprise, invade
    Germany, Germany above everything
    [Chorus]
Germany - my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
Germany - your breath is cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany - your love
Is a curse and a blessing
    Germany - my love
    I can't give you
    Germany!
    Germany!
    [Bridge]
    You
    I
    We
    All of you
    You (superior/overpowering, unnecessary)
    I (Übermenschen weary)
We (The higher you climb, the further you fall)
    You (Germany, Germany above everything)
    [Chorus]
Germany - your heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
    Germany - my breath's cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany - your love
    Is a curse and blessing
    Germany - my love
    I can't give you
    Germany!

The video will always be weird if you don't know about German history. And even then it's in some parts hard to understand what they mean. One important part ist that the black woman is the personification of Germania and represends Germany as a country or nation. So when they eat her, it's a visualisation on how they cannibalised their own country. That's also the reason why she wears a Nazi uniform when they are about to execute the jews. Why did Ramstein chooose a black woman for that part? Well, in a couple of shots she represents the colours a German glag (Eagle, Black, Gold, Red) and they were also always known to incite a scandal.
