  • I finally get my white whale Winter Flounder!!
    We torture poor Alana and make our own from scratch winter flounder chum.
    Chris gets 5 fat winter flounder. Keeping two for the dinner table. I honestly think this is the best eating fish in all of New Jersey.
    This video goes to show that perseverance and hard work always pays off. I tell others that fishing is ABSOLUTELY ZERO luck and all skill or research.
    I love you all and I thank you all for watching! God bless. Here's to calm seas and beautiful sunsets.

    I love winter flounder too! It’s been an obsession for 50 years..I would buy flats of worms and bushels of mussels and cases of chum. They are so depleted now in Long Island almost not worth the effort. I fished Moriches also in its hat day!! Miss that great action . Now in Shinnecock only a three week window in May and can fish all day for two bites. Sad !!! Also this year bay scallops all died off out here. It’s loss of habitat and too many mega homes being built on the water. We are in a sad state today. Enjoy your videos . Catch em up !!!

    • @michaelarma4468
      @michaelarma4468 3 года назад +1

      @@whoareyou551 no wise guy ! You cannot ruin a fishery by recreational fishing. Yeah years ago guys filled totes and tubs with fluke and other fish. Never a shortage until commercial fishing gear became so advanced and destructive. Also , I believe it is loss of habitat like marshland and eel grass to to declining water quality. Mega mansions being built at the waters edge. Never see grass shrimp and other forage that winter flounder love to feed on. Last year the entire east end bay scallop fishery was decimated due to pot water quality and a specific bacteria that killed them all. ROD AND REEL WILL NEVER DESTROY A FISHERY!! It’s the greed and unscrupulous acts of commercial fisherman, and the loss of habitat that all species need succeed. Such a simple minded answer you gave!. Wake up!

    • @whoareyou551
      @whoareyou551 3 года назад

      Michael Arma you definitely can put a big dent in Populations with rod and reel , if you keep filling barrels with a species everyday that can ruin a fishery as the bottom should be paved with winter flounder but they all got picked out

I've blown out the sides of several 5 gallon plastic ones. I still get blackbacks in the back of raritan bay--no one fishes for them up here anymore.

    Hey chris...when I was a boy I fished Barnegat Bay and had a 16 ft wooden runabout, the old salts would tell me to go out towards the inlet,have 2 chum pots with clam,muscles, and corn .use blood worms and besides bouncing the chum pots off bottom they all swore that to help mix up the bottom with chum .... get a bathroom plunger and add a long shift of maybe 10 ft and use it to plunge the bottom as if you where trying to unplug a toilet no kidding Chris it worked all the time,sounds silly but these old Barnegat salts knew there shit...

    Another way to stimulate the bite is to bring along some kind of long stick or a weight on a rope to dig up the sand on the bottom - that will act as chum too. You might want to try another trip this year - chum is really essential for blackback flounder fishing. Bring the wife along and let her handle the chumming. It'll be a good "bonding" experience for you both LOL!

    If you ever want to experience some of the best winter flounder fishing that still be found, head up to Quincy and fish with Capt. Jason Colby. Although the fishery is not what it was in the 1970’s & 80’s, you can still easily catch a limit of big winter flatties. I’ve done about 15 trips with Capt. Colby and only once have we not caught a boat limit (falling 1 short, I believe the legal limit is still 5 or 6 per person in Massachusetts )-but then again even though the legal limit is 12 inches, we’d set a boat limit of keeping openly 14 inches or greater. In fact, I’ve caught many 17 inch + winter flounder up there.

    Hi Chris, I found you through 609 fishing and Dillon. I have been subbed for a several months now and like the channel. I laughed my ass off watching you make up that batch of chum, my father would do the same thing back in the 60's, probably got the same recipe from Milt Rosco in the Long Island Fisherman. Dad introduced me to flounder fishing in the late 50's and it was flounder fishing that made me into a life long fisherman. I would like to help you on your quest for flounder. You are still using way too much bait. Winter flounder have small mouth's and no teeth, they suck the bait into their mouth, if you cover the entire hook with gobs of worm it just increases gut hooking. You are not chumming bluefish you don't cast out into a slick instead fish just few feet down current of the chum pot, just like fishing blowfish, the fish will come to the source. Belmar is a great place for flounder but I have caught them in Barnegat bay with reasonable success. Any creek that drains off large shallow muddy area is a good place to try during outgoing water. Winter flounder follow the warm currents out in spring just like fluke do in the fall. Try the smaller creeks that drain from Lakes, Absecon and Reeds bay. It's worth a few hours and River Reaper is the perfect boat for it. Good luck.
