Uncovering Lindisfarne's Viking History: Exploring The Holy Island Of Northumberland

  • A visit to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne on a gloriously sunny Easter Bank Holiday weekend, after pervious stops at Warkworth and Bamburgh Castles. The tide was going out as I crossed the causeway to Holy Island but I had to be back on the mainland before the returning tide cut the Island off at 16.00. I first visited the quiet side of the island and three deserted sandy bays, where the Vikings recorded their first ever raid, when they landed at the bays, then attacked and destroyed the Abbey, slaughtering all the monks. I then visit the 16th century Castle, before walking to the church and Abbey ruins where we see them from the ground and the air with footage from the drone.
    Below is a link to my favourite Northumberland Castle and contains a full grisly and horrific history of 'Chillingham Castle' considered to be the most haunted castle in the UK

    That was an awesome castle and fantastic beach. You had the place to yourself too! I wouldn't chance messing with the tide as I have been trapped before when the tide came in on me years ago. Having a water phobia, it scared me to death. Interesting to learn about the area and the Vikings. Awesome highlights of the area with the drone footage. Fantastic explore of the area. Well done. Have a great day.

      Loving going across to Holy Island but you did need to watch the tide times as it does com in real quick and ever year at least once car gets caught out. Amazing history there going back to the 7th century and you can feel it walking around. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

      Always love a trip up to Holy Island, which is under 2 hours away from us, so I was surprised when I realised it was 4 years since my last visit. As it was the bank holiday weekend, I set off really early, too early for Mrs Metalman, which was a shame as she always enjoys it there too. The village area was packed but I knew those 3 little sand coves would be deserted, so real pleased I headed to there first. Haha, yes the mead is very good, I took 2 bottles home with me lol. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

    Blue skies! At last! Nothing like a bit of sun, sea and sand to lift the spirits! 🌞. What a gorgeous place holy island is, the castle looked magical silhouetted against the beach ⛱️ 🏰. Very nice drone shots too , always nice to get a birds eye view👌. Those poor peaceful monks, never saw the vikings coming 😢. A private beach! Amazing ❤. Mrs metalman was missed though, you need to pack that picnic next time there is a sunny day. Enjoyed that Alan, thanks for taking us along ⛱️ 🌞 🏰,
    All the best,

      With it been the bank holiday weekend and me getting up real early, that put her off coming, which was a shame as we both love it there but do normally visit mid week, which (the village bit) is a lot quieter. You have to take these sunny days when you can get them mind and what a gorgeous day it turned out to be too, shame it did not last longer that one day. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

      Yes and that was the reason Mrs Metalman did not come with me, as I had to get up real early. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

    What an endless sandy coast and the colors of the sand and the sea merging. Something wonderful. I like the remains of the castles nearby and they look even better with the drone. I think that Viking attacks on Britain were frequent but unfortunately the monks got the short end of the stick here. Nice sharing Alan and have a nice week. Cheers. Sretana and Zac. 🖐😄🤗

Great thumbnail getting caught on that causeway! Your own private beach! What an incredible place. Poor Monks never stood a chance. It’s so lovely on the beaches, and so quiet too… I can picture a nice picnic enjoying the views! Horrible to think of what it was like when the island was raided by the Vikings with all the destruction and murder. 🥲

Holy Island is such a brilliant place to visit and absolutely radiates history, only thing to be careful of is the tide times, which cover the causeway (all published online), so you get about 7 hours safe crossing time before you are cut off by the incoming tide. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

    During my misspent youth I had a field visit to Lindisfarne and had to do some research. For such a tiny scrap of land it has a lot of history following the Viking raid too. The castle was bought by Edward Hudson, owner of the Country Life magazine and he had the top architect and garden designer involved in renovations. Gertrude Jekyll redesigned the old walled vegetable garden and was responsible for 400 other designs in Britain, Europe and North America. Sir Edwin Lutyens was a world class architect who designed many of the Government buildings in New Dehli, India, the huge WW1 memorial at Thiepval on the Somme and the Cenotaph in Whitehall. It is a beautiful and wild coast up there and is included in Bernard Cornwell's "Last Kingdom" series of novels (he claims to be descended from the early owners of Bamburgh Castle).

    Hi Alan Well as you know I love being out in the mountains but I also absolutely adore a good sandy beach... so Wow. I've been to Banburgh a few times, which I love but only to Lindisfarne once for a very short visit. Due to the tides I only got to see a quick glimpse of the village but crickey if I get to go again I'll be sneaking onto your private beach haha Well erm I loved the drone shots haha !! Especially with the reflections of the clouds on the beach. Looks to be so much more to explore than I realised but you'll have a job evicting me off that beach. Would love to visit again very soon but so much to see so little time haha A fab destination thank you 😊

    • @AlanMETALMAN
      @AlanMETALMAN  7 месяцев назад

      If you get the chance do it but check on the tides first, I got dead luck with the safe crossing starting at 08.20 and I like to go when it is a real early safe crossing time as the tourists do not tent to come till later. We actually stopped over for 2 nights on my 60th birthday, which was brilliant as when the tide comes in you are completely cut off and all the locals just stay indoors, so the whole island is deserted, a bit like one of those old Hammer horror films lol. Thanks very much for watching and fingers crossed you get get back there again asap, cheers Alan

I don't think they stopped to swim or sunbathe on any of the 3 beaches, though if they stopped on your beach they'd have had words from you! Its a great place to visit but you must check the tide times, which you can get online. You get about 7 hours safe crossing over the causeway to the island but if you miss that window you are stuck there till the next safe crossing. I put a link in the description of this video to my favourite Northumberland castle 'Chillingham Castle', which is the most haunted castle in the UK and you can actually stop over night there. It's only 13 miles away from Holy Island and it has an horrific history, so well worth a visit and very reasonably priced too. Another great castle to visit is Alnwick Castle (where Harry Potter was filmed), which is 20 miles from Holy Island, it's more expensive and very grand but great to look around and has the Poison Gardens and the newly opened Lilidorei, which is an magical adventure playground for kids. The closest castle to Holy Island and another tour is the one where I started the video, Bamburgh Castle, which is only 6 miles drive away. All of the castles have their own websites online and are all open for visitors now. We are booked into a log cabin near the lakes next week and the weather is still looking very mixed but it has to improve by the time you get over the following week surely. I have never known such a wet start to the year. PS: if you are looking at a place to stop for a few days, there is a new Premier Inn recently opened in Alnwick, which would be a perfect base to stop for a few days in Northumberland. Again, they have their own website, offer good value and a good standard of accommodation and food. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan
