Every year I get raccoons having babies in my barn. I can tell because the chickens eggs keep disappearing the coonies needing extra food. As long as they don't bother the chickens I just leave them alone Last year the momma came out with 6 little ones, they are so cute! So far this momma seems well behaved and not destroying things so I just let her be. It's a tough world out there.

exactly, that's how I feel, probably how a lot of people would feel if they knew, like you do, how to share space with creatures who don't know to think about things the way humans do. Humans often feel that the animals are encroaching on our property, when the animals just feel that the area is open to everyone looking for a home, a safe place to bring up babies. As long as they have enough food that they don't have to fight for, they're more likely to leave the chickens alone. Raccoons prefer food that doesn't fight back, if they can get it. I love your attitude!

Thank you for thinking that way. It bothered me that the one place would not let the babies stay in the window well for just a few hours. Mom has to go in search out a new den. (A den most likely taken by another mother.) Maybe someone else window or garage. I did not see they were causing much damage to begin with. We encroached on their homes, the least we can do it let them have the babies and grow to move on. Last early winter we had an older 3 leg raccoon living on a small branch in tree outside our back yard. In the tree all day and then the neighbors shed roof at night. She layed up there all night on the metal roof in the freezing rain. No shelter. She was not even motivated to go away or look for food. I contacted a wildlife rescue and i was told she was probably kicked out of her den and had no place. They were going to come for her the next day. Except my neighbor caught her on the roof and were not happy i had been giving her food and chased her away. I never saw her again. Why do people have to be so cruel to wild life? Especially ones that are disabled.

You know them so well, and you treat them respectfully and humanely, you're helpful with the humans who live there, and you're really good with the work you do. When I see that someone has contacted one of your competitors, the "work" they did is consistently horrible. I've watched a few videos of other wildlife removal people in your area, and the difference is huge. They're awful compared to you, they clearly don't know about the animals or care about them, just view them as pests. It's really obvious that you've studied and cared for these animals for many years, and that you care about them. If I lived in Canada, you're the only one I'd call.

You can find a documentary here on RUclips about racoons that live in Toronto (I think that is the city, might be another Canadian city) - they have that entire city mapped out (the racoons I mean) in terms of territory and in some ways a wild-setting the same size would support fewer of them (humans have lots of trash and gardens and other things they most definitely enjoy).

@hjki hd If for some reason I owned a barn, why in hell would i waste it by giving it to animals like racoons. if i had a barn, I would use it for: keeping cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens etc, I would keep farm equipment like tractors, or I could simply store anything i needed in it. At no point during my owning of this barn would i ever consider letting a bloody racoon live in it. Being an Australian, we don't have racoons, but we do have birds; most of which who love to shit on our cars. And not to mention the Kangaroo's, who love to run into our school campus and scare the school shitless. But wait we should have just let the Kangaroo live in the school; it's completely harmless and definitely can't kill and adult male with its legs alone. We should have just let all the wildlife live with us in our own backyards, because we all own the earth. We all own the Earth, so that bird won't mind if i live in its nest. if it can live in my roof, i can live in its home. We should all stop killing animals and set them all free, so they can be brutally torn apart with no mercy and be slowly eaten alive by another predator; because that's got to be better than a humane death after a life of free food and shelter given by humans.

I've been an animal rehaber for decades, and have cared for several raccoons before returning them to the woods. I appreciate the pro-raccoon sentiments posted here, but there are some serious issues to be considered.
    1. One is that raccoons can be carriers of rabies. You don't have to be bitten. Just a scratch from one or getting saliva from them deposited in a little cut on your hand can do it. When they scavage for food, they can drool and leave saliva on things.
    2. Raccoons usually use a communal toilet, which is a major health risk for humans who may live in the vicinity. They carry viruses, bacteria, and parasites which are deadly and can be transmitted to man. Pets unknowingly can walk thru it and bring it into the house.
    3. Raccoons usually carry Baylisascaris procyonis, an intestinal roundworm whose larvae enters the bloodstream (Visceral Larval Migrans), travels to the eyes and the brain, and is the cause of fatal central nervous system disease in mammals. It can be transmitted to cats and dogs, as well as people, and cannot be treated. The entire time in captivity, raccoons being rehabbed must regularly be given a particular de-wormer so that they can be safely handled.
    4. They can carry Giardi, a protozoan that is in raccoon feces and deposited in soil, water, and other surfaces. Kids and gardeners are more likely to contract it for obvious reasons.
Bottom line: While raccoons are cute and appealing, it must be remembered that they are a wild animal, with a natural fear of humans, and should not be approached. They can be very harmful to humans if they are living in close proximity to them. People should NEVER handle raccoons or their waste without protection and appropriate training.

Us humans have the mercy to not destroy these things altogether. There is a depth of compassion in this world and it exists almost entirely in humanity-we’ve earned this power over all the world by choosing against ourselves... by not abusing it too far (yet).
These creatures on the other hand are still comparatively immature on the evolutionary spectrum-they are not things with any capacity to return the same regard for us nor eachother. And if it were up to them (if it was in their power), they would just displace us altogether, steal our homes, terminate us and our threat of coexistence, and continue to feel just as much need to protect their territory as we do.
I understand if you are frustrated with this reality; but for that you must wave your fist at your creator-or at nature-than humanity. I forewarn however. that this would come to no avail.
The other route; cursing humanity and idealizing a reversion back to the primitive where there is “room for nature” is becoming dangerous discourse these days. Because to some, there is one way of getting such an end across: human depopulation.

@Rob DaFrog The secret to life is to strive for balance, patience and wisdom, qualities that are evident in Mr Gates, and what what I see as lacking in your approach. The neighbor's initial request to remove the raccoon babies was entirely understandable. Not only are humans unused to dealing with raccoons, racoons cause damage for homeowners. It is natural to have the same animal instincts to protect as do animals themselves. Once Gates explained what he was doing, the neighbor's tone completely softened.
Your hate for humanity is a tragedy, and again unbalanced, unwise and impatient. And your view of animals is an idealization. Animals are beings without guile and also without mercy. The human/animal life of complete harmony that you may long for is impossible in a modern world and should not be desired, because the pre-modern works was full of unnecessary cruelties for humans.
I absolutely think we should be thoughtful and kind in planning human habitation so as to create the least possible intrusion into the environments of animal life. But I don't regret for a moment the growth of human life on the planet. Cutting down rain forest so that we have more luxury goods is evil. Clearing a rain forest for human habitation is holy.

Okay, I've seen a lot of people argue in the comments about "How stupid, they'd just go to the neighbours of course" or "Why forcing the mother to find another hideout, it's cruel", so I'll clarify some points :
-First, the part about "relocating" in the neighbours was just a temporary step : the main concern when animals move their youngs to another hideout (and it happens A LOT in the wild so it's completely natural for them to do so) is predation. The mother didn't trust the box, full of human scent, thus she moved the babies to a place where they'd be safe from predators until she can relocate them, probably because her secondary nest was far from there.
-Second : As I mentioned, just like squirrels, racoons don't build just one nest. They prepare several hideouts within their territory in case the first one is discovered by predators. When it happens, they move their babies to one of these secondary hideouts to keep them safe, so they're not throwing them out of their only home, the racoon mother has like 2 or 3 more prepared in advance for such cases.
So calm down a bit in the comments, there was no animal cruelty performed here ^^
