    Excellent detailed explanation, thank you, including what version existed prior to this helmet. After a severe crash this past weekend, I am buying (10 yr. Old helmet; no MIPS) this most advanced DH helmet to increase the safety of my brain 🧠 even though I typically ride single track trails (there’s always unexpected dips and downhill portions anyway). 👍🏼

      I hope you're well. Head injuries are no joke. Do you intend on using it with the chin bar? If not, there are other good options that are a little less expensive.

      @@FanatikBikeCo thank you for your reply. Fortunately after hitting a fallen tree (4 " Dia.) that was laying at about 15 degrees and approx. 3.5 ft. (1 m) off of the ground and all across the trail, I did have an immediate impact and blown back off the bike but came out with no evidenced brain issue, just some severe bleeding above my right eye (stitches) and a good face scrape. Yes, I plan to west my chin bar on single track now or anything questionable (I don’t care what others think; who knows when you might land face forward and flat against your cheek / chin area). Especially since I’m now riding my newer Norco Fluid VLT-A1 E-bike (speed can climb quickly).

      NismoZTuner so far so good. I've done most of my riding with the chin removed and it's pretty good. When riding full face with chin attached it's good too. In my opinion the helmet looks way better as a full face than a trail helmet. Trail helmet looks a little big compared to other dedicated trail helmets. The camera attachment they include is pretty stable and attaches securely.

    Would you recommend the super dh as the first full face I'm gonna get? Cause I also think that it's really nice to have a 2in1 helmet. Gonna go visit some bike parks in Sommer and since its DH certificate I was thinking of getting the super dh. Just wanted to ask what's your opinion. Also if you keep the new 2019 super dh in mind. As an alternative I've also found the Bell Full 9 Fusion but its 'just' a fullface. Thanks in advance

      Hi Annika,
      If you don't have the budget for two separate helmets, or if you will sometimes be pedaling your bike but wanting a full face for the descent, this is the helmet I'd suggest. I'm on my second one after a nasty crash took the first one out - I'm glad I was wearing it though, I would have been in much worse shape if I'd be using a regular half shell.

    Hey fanatik!!!! I have a spot on 22” head (basically 56cm) . I’m 5 10” and really slender, with a slender face... Tried on a buddies size small gyro helmet and it seemed to fit really well, I’ve looked at bells sizing and think I should prolly go with a small in the super dh as well? I have a medium bell segment bmx helmet, and I had to install the thicker padding to get it as snug as I preferred. Got any advice?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  4 года назад

      Sorry for the late reply! You are sort of in between size medium and large. The small would have you leaving the ratchet mostly open, whereas the medium would have you snugging it down almost all the way. I think that if the medium Bell Segment was fairly loose, maybe the small Super DH would suit you well. You can find it here: bit.ly/ShopBellSuperDH

    I'm wondering if you still think this is a good purchase, a few years on?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  6 лет назад +1

      Hi!
      Good question.
      This helmet does meet the same safety certifications as the Disiple MIPS, and actually has a newer version of MIPS that in my mind is more refined.
      Helmet technology has been ramping up recently. If you had asked me this question between the first Bell Super and the Disciple, I would have said the Disciple for sure. At this point, all the testing these companies have done says that the Super DH will do just as good a job at protecting you, despite it weighing quite a bit less. You could argue that it's reduced weight actually goes in it's favor in terms of protection. I'd be inclined to believe the results of those tests and safety certs.
      Hopefully that helps answer your question!

      Thanks for the info. Decided to go with a 2017 Troy Lee Designs D3 Composite since I found it for under $200. It doesn't have the MIPS I wanted but the protection still looks good and it's supposed to be very comfortable with great ventilation!

    Great vid. Bell Super DH or Giro Switchblade? Don’t care about looks, only interested in protection.

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  5 лет назад +6

      Howdy,
      You can look at it a few ways:
      As a half shell, the Switchblade has more protection, since it wraps down to cover your ears.
      As a full face, they both have full DH certification, so theoretically, same there.
      In my mind, the spherical MIPS that the Super DH has really makes sense, and I like how the helmet fits. It also has more ventilation than the Switchblade, so you might take that into consideration if you live in an area that gets hot.
      Hopefully that helps, let me know if you have any more Qs!

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  3 года назад

      The other pads are thinner, yep. They are supposed to be snug on your cheeks, it's hard to say simply by that description as to whether it's too much though. Is it painful? Does it cause discomfort? If not, then I'd say it's normal and you're good to go.

    When would you recommend a dedicated DH helmet over the Super DH? I don't see myself riding much DH or very technical/large features at a bike park but the idea of one helmet that seems very safe with the FF feature would be nice.

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  5 лет назад +1

      I've heard the argument that this helmet, despite all the same safety certifications, is less safe than a full face. I can't speak to the validity of that, but I'd guess that's wrong. With all the testing that these companies do, I imagine that in real world situations they probably are equally as protective.
      Especially since you would only ever be using a full face on rare occasions, my personal opinion is that this would be a great option for you.

      Here is my input: the Proframe and Strage utilize the standard MIPS layer, whereas the SuperDH does take it a step further with the rotational MIPS that is part of the helmets internal design, plus it has the dual-density EPP and EPS (the other two may have that...not sure). Add the versatility of the removal chin bar, and I feel the Bell wins (for me anyway...I'm about to order one and was considering the exact three that you are).

    Hi Dan, I mostly do enduro with my Bell Super 2r but I ocasionally also go for a uplift assisted ride or bike park with my enduro bike and my old Kali DH helmet. I wonder if I should go for this helmet or a POC coron air for bike park and the super 3r for weekend rides.... what do you think?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  6 лет назад +1

      Hey Miguel,
      If you didn't want to spend the money on two helmets, the Super DH does have full downhill safety certifications. That being said, I do personally also own a 6D downhill helmet. Maybe it's just a placebo, but a full DH helmet seems safer (the 6D in particular). The Super DH does seem safer than the Super 3R, for the reasons I talked about in this video. I'd maybe start with that, and then decide if you want to invest in a dedicated full face as well.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hi I just wanted to know what does a dh rating mean?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  3 года назад

      There's a number of different certifications that helmet companies can test their helmets to. For example, ASTM's F1952-15 certification is described as the following:
      "This specification covers performance requirements for helmets used by downhill mountain bicycle riders. Studies have shown higher risk to the head and face for this sport as compared to recreational street riding; hence, this specification requires greater impact protection and provides performance criteria for chin bars on full-face helmets, but does not require full-face helmets. Retention system tests shall be performed before impact testing. The helmet can be impacted anywhere on or above the test line with the curbstone anvil in any horizontal orientation. The ambient test helmet shall be subjected to the chin bar impact test."
      (www.astm.org/Standards/F1952.htm for example)

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  6 лет назад +3

      Hey Bryan,
      It does seem like that might be the case. With the full DH certification allowing you to have that confidence in the bike park and being able to remove the chin bar for climbs it really is the only helmet you would need for enduro/dh applications. I don't think I would choose this helmet if the majority of my riding was more xc/trail oriented. In that case I think I would get something a bit lighter. If your a more aggressive rider I'd say this is your go to though!

    How does this compare to the giro switchblade?

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Ethan,
      Good question! The Super DH has the new MIPS Spherical protection system where as the Switchblade has the original MIPS System, that is going to be one of the bigger differences. The Super DH also has a more traditional half shell design when the chin bar is removed. The Switchblade has the ear and cheek protection, where the helmet comes down a little bit further on your head. Over all the Super DH is going to have a bit more protection and will be a bit lighter and more breathable when broken down into a half shell.
      Hope that helps,

    does it have something to attach goggles

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  6 лет назад

      It has what Bell calls Goggle Guide, which just refers to the shape of the helmet, which sort of pushes your goggles to a comfortable spot. It does not have a clip on the back of the helmet, but that is something not typically used on DH helmets since one ends up removing their goggles so frequently.

      Not too bad, it's ~500g (depending on size) as a half-shell and ~900g as a full face. That's a bit more than most dedicated, high end half-shells, and a bit less than most dedicated full faces.

      Fanatik Bike Co. hey, if you had a concussion take a long time off, don’t risk it it’s not worth it, I had to take 5 years off after a massive concussion. A helmet won’t help much with concussion no matter what the manufacturers say. Maybe on the margin.
