You should also mention that the RaceFace pads fully open up from the back so you can remove them without taking off your shoes. It seems like a silly detail to mention but it’s one of the things I like the most about those pads. After a hot long day of riding it’s really nice to be able to immediately take off the knee pads without having to take off your shoes. It also easier to carry these in you pack and slip them on for the downhill since you don’t have to take off your shoes.
In terms of comfort: Do you use them for 20 miles plus rides, too, or do you put them on for downhill only because of their size? Since they're open at the back, their ventilation doesn't look too bad either...
When I first got them I did use them on 20 plus mile rides without a problem but since they are easy to remove and put on without taking off your shoes, it's easy to strap them to your pack for the climb and then just put them on for the descents.
POC System VPD... light, breathable, I put them on and forget about them until I need them. Not the most protective but I’ve fallen onto roots and rocks and only incurred very minor injury. Pedal all day, stay put, and way better than POCs other offerings in regards to comfort.
I have a pair of Fox enduro pads I wear on pretty much every ride. They don't have the most impact protection, but they do great in a slide and that is all I really need them to do. I can also pedal all day in them without any issue. In my opinion the safest pads are the ones you are gong to wear.
I have used all the knee pads on this review. The best one is the G-form Pro knee pad on a 3 hour long ride. They all provide good protection but G-form does not cut you skin after a longer ride.
I started using the G-form pads this year, after riding for 12 years without knee pads. Naturally, I went OTB with 2 tuck-n-rolls down some rock steps on my very 1st ride with them ;) Awesome protection! The biggest bonus is they fold up very small to stick in your pack for climbs, and are light weight as well. However, you should buy them to fit a bit tight, since they don't have straps, but after a few mins, I forget I'm wearing them
FYI the sticky rubber strip is silicone. Sounds like a lot of the pads have non-newtonian materials in them these days. D3O were among the first to market such materials where the materials resistance to a force (ie impact) is dependent on the velocity of the force. Cool tech as it allows the pads to be flexy for easier pedalling (a slow force application) but the material stiffens up during an impact (fast force application) to give more energy absorption ability than regular foam of similar thickness. Human bone is non-newtonian to, but in the opposite manner. You can fracture a human bone with a much lower force if the force is applied slowly compared to applying the force quickly.
Dianese Trail Skins for me, they work great. They're good in between pads, though I do use them for DH frequently. Haven't tried the Trail Skin 2s yet, they look more G-formy, which isn't a bad thing. Fox Launch Enduro knee pads for XC rides when I feel I need some protection. I use the Launch Enduro elbow pads as well, but only when riding DH.
I have Race Face Ambush Guard, awesome protection, light weight, back part has open for ventilation and don't need to take a shoe off when I put them on, great product indeed!!!
I'm amazed at how little attention there is to ankles and back of the shins. Every time I crash, or even when I don't crash that's where all the pain is. I started wearing these soccer shin guards that have padding around the sides by Storelli.
I just bought a pair of G-Forms last week and did my first ride in them (or any kneepad) on a 21-miler. After the first five minutes, I didn't notice that I had them on. Thankfully, no crashes, so I didn't get to test out the protection aspect, but they are super comfortable. It was hot Saturday, and the ventilation seemed adequate.
I have Alpinestar knee pads. Getting some POC pads soon. My Alpinestars work well and don't slid, but the material is ripping in parts. I usually rock at least my knee pads everywhere. I've see a bud mess up his knees on extremely simple XC riding. Scared me for life!
I rock the G-Form knee& shin guards combined with Triple8 shin guards to cover lower legs. I agree Gforms are the most comfortable and coolest/air flow but unfortunately they do slide and move upon a side crash as u mentioned. My gf uses the Ixs assault and they dont move on crashes
I have been riding the Sam Hill pads the last 6 months or so, best pads i ever had! Protects plenty and the sleve is long enoth so they stay in place amazingly well.
Thx for that! 👍 The Fox pads look interesting with that side protection :) I use the POC and love 'em. For rocky and rooty DH I use LEATT Hybrid (with shin pretection) though, as they combine hardening gel and a hardshell on top to slide off those rocks and roots. They stay well in place but are not the most comfy ones for pedalling ;) There is a knee-only version of the Hybrids that I'm curious about, how they feel on pedalling ;)
I have the IXS Flow and TLD Speed. The speed is my go-to every day pad. Super thin, not a lot of protection but I feel more comfortable wearing nothing at all, so anything helps. I use the IXS for BMX racing and Enduro use. They move well, and offer adequate protection.
Do the IXS FLow Pads run true to size? I'm right in the middle between medium and large. I'm 6' tall, 167lbs. Do they give in a little (or maybe a lot)?
They are pretty true to size. Being a strap on one end and elastic gripper on the other, I'd be inclined to size down because the back is very stretchy.
Have you tried Kali Striker knee pad? For me the best out there for Trail/Enduro. Best in comfort and protection plus looks great! I like it so much I have just ordered Kali Striker elbow pads.
Do the IXS FLow Pads run true to size? I'm right in the middle between medium and large. I'm 6' tall, 167lbs. Do they give in a little (or maybe a lot)?
I use well ventilated motocross pads because they are a third of the price and I love them. They are not comfy for pedalling tho so I only use them for the downhills, other than that they are pretty good and I combo them with shin pads which help them stay in place so neato magneto. Great video as always. have a nice day:)
I love Fox Launch Pro, I forget that I'm wearing while I'm riding (pedaling). I also use them under my snowboarding pants as well. Super comfortable....
Hi, I also want use the fox launch pro under my snowboading pants. But I am wondering did you feel pain when fall down? I have used D3O material knee pad before, It let me felt nothing when I fall down, even thought the advertising show the bone is being protected.
Prefer the Endura MTR knee guard great protection got a silicon gel strap top and bottom so great for pedalling ,also pad can be removed and replaced (if need be) and washed only £66.00 Very comfortable great protection also got memory foam with silicon straps can bike for miles without pads slipping
Plastic knee caps should be on all pads, then they slide and don't pull down. If you're wearing pants it's not so much of an issue, but in shorts they're vital. I wear Fox Launch Pro for this reason.
I had a huge crash today. I’m new and I had no protection besides a helmet. Helmet saves me a concussion and a spilt open head but my knee and butt are screwed. Huge road burn on my hole butt cheek and a a very deep old cut up leg. I am going to get knee pads and wear my sliding shorts for baseball now. Lesson learned
Nice video, as usual. Good overview of some solid and varied choices. That said, and maybe it’s just me, but the seemingly random order in which the pads were presented was a little annoying/confusing. Didn’t seem to be by price, style/intended use, alphabetical, or even how they were laid out on the table. 🤔🤓
I’ve just received my g form knee pads, I got to admit that they’re no te best looking knee pads, but definitely superior than the Fox enduro. The same with the launch pad by Fox. If you’re looking for a more sturdy alternative from g form I would suggest to get the rugged version.
I don't run knee pads when riding trail bikes but I do use those Fox Launch Pro for DH and love them for that. Wouldn't want to pedal in them though just like you said.
I use the Fox launch pro knee pads,i have done 20 miles of pedaling in the summer and never had a problem. They are great for big impacts though i have noticed a few smaller impacts that always seem to hit the seam that has no padding and boy does that hurt.
@@ganjahero187 I have Fox Launch Pro and they disintegrated on me. Seams and piping came apart and now the foam is torn all over the place. Never crashed hard in them and always washed and air dried. No more Fox pads for me.
Alpinestars Paragon and Paragon plus, I have 1 set of each. I have been using the Paragons 1 year so far, very comfy and for my style of riding they're great. plus version not used yet. I was riding my hardtail maybe a year ago and took a dump on the blacktop trying to hop a curb, more abrasions than anything but I wear pads ALL the time now, next time I might not be so lucky
If you’re going to do a proper review , I think it makes sense to specify what people are paying for. the specific properties/ composition that makes each knee pad should’ve been at least mentioned. This is coming from a person who is getting into the Industry. This way it avoids people doing google searches on properties about certain knee pads.
Ive gone thru so many knee n elbow pads because they all slide or are harsh on the skinn but this winter i got the g form and haven tried them on my bike but used them at the terrain park snow boarding n the did great protecting me and not sliding down and i could wear them all day n be comfortable
i'm actually looking for kneepads for snowboarding and as well for mtbiking. thank you for your review. i'm actually considering and most likely buy the G-Form Pro X
I have the IXS & the Fox Launch pads. I love the IXS, I hate the Fox! Too big & bulky, and mega uncomfortable. Feels like it's digging into the back of my knee, and cutting off circulation in the calf! It may be good for downhill, but it is not good at all if you have to pedal! The IXS I can wear all day, and barely even notice them!
Do the IXS FLow Pads run true to size? I'm right in the middle between medium and large. I'm 6' tall, 167lbs. Do they give in a little (or maybe a lot)?
Yes, I checked on that chart, in fact. And my lower leg measures exactly 42cm which is the boundary between Medium and Large! I was wondering if medium should be snug yet not too tight. I think I'm going with Medium.
I have those race face pads. I find they're very comfortable but they have a huge down side for me - every time I crash onto them they get dragged down over the knee & my knee gets shredded. I tried tightening them fully etc but because they protrude a fair bit they seem to catch in a crash. Side protection is perfect though. Also they are too big to wear with mtb pants,
While he is reviewing each knee pad I look over to the left to see what Mr. Alice Cooper thinks. Interesting, same reaction with all the pads. I wonder what knee pads he would recommend? Haha
I'm not riding any knee pads at the moment. But I'm looking for a a good comfortable pair that I can ride both DH and some single track trails. I've been riding pretty much all my life . Been on a Bmx most of those years ND I'm 43. Just recently made the decision to ride more mtb then Bmx . This next summer I will be riding my first DH trails up in Minnesota. I have purchased a used Giant Glory DH , that I like very much nd am soo stoked to ride . I need some ideas. I also want pads that cover some of the shin. Those race face u just showcased i like .
Both my POC pads (VPD air and VPD 2.0 DH) slide all over my knees when crashing, I hate that about them. Since realizing that I’ve been using Fox DH long pads and have been very satisfied.
POC ones anti slide ring on the top do rub your skin off on the sides of your legs. Abrasion if you pedal a lot. I would not recommend shame because padding looks good.
i wouldn't trust the machine & the dryer for my cycling clothing and gears. i wash them manually, all are still good! the machines will eat your jerseys.
I m gonna have to stop watching your videos with Yetis and Evils everywhere, it s ruining my life 😂 seriously, good video as always. I have the green ones exactly like the guy that crashes mid video. Are they good? I still haven t crashed... with these I mean 😂
I do mostly chunky trails and a little bit of jumps . I like the pads. A Calling would be my dream bike for what I do...in Canada, you have to get a mortgage if you want an Evil....I could get it from the States, but then I would have to pay a 20% duty and it would get even more expensive...🤔
Any advice on spine protection. I took a bad fall last year on my home trail and broke a few transverse vertebrae in my lower back. I have been injured badly a few times but these one really scared me. Any advice is welcome, thanks
RaceFace has some cool D30 Foam protection undershirts. Check this one out. www.worldwidecyclery.com/products/raceface-flank-core-protection-black-lg?variant=894161953#
If u want serious spine protection then look at mx body armour, as it is made to withstand a lot more force. Things to look for are CE certifications on the armour pads themselves, not on the vest or whatever the armour sits in. Another good thing is D30 or any of its equivilants. Normally there a soft, gel like pad that hardens significantly upon impact. That means there comfy when ur riding but protective if u crash. U can just get a vest, which has back/chest plates only, or u could get a t shirt one, which normally has shoulder pads as well. I prefer the full jacket design, that has chest/back, shoulder, elbow and sometimes hip
sorry to hear that bro, that sounds really scary. i fell off while fatbiking in the fall of 2017 and actually tore my right acl. i had surgery last march 2018 but now i'm all good. can't wait to go back fatbiking but now with kneepads for sure.
Knee pads are cheep in the US!!!! Just bought a pair of 661 evo 2 from a German site €110 and took 13days to deliver? CRC were out of stock but similar prices.
Any recommendations for someone with larger legs? I’m 5’10 182lbs with 22” legs (4” above the knee) and seem to be considerably larger than any xl sizing on all brands.
I do mostly longer trail riding, moderate amount of climbing, and some downhill with some gnarl, but nothing extreme. Would the G-Form Elite be worth the extra length or should I just go for the G-form Pros
I will be doing a 100 mile endurance MTB race in 2 months, I am looking for the best light weight, breathable, long distance knee pad I can get. Which one do you recommend?
Any opinion on the Race Face Charge? I chose them for their back material was soft and breathable. - comparable to the POC VPD Air - but very thin cushion. Is something like that even sensible to wear? They don't look like offering much protection of anything.. Maybe i need something with a hard shell.. I pedal a lot so they gotta be flexible. Hmm. I just want basic protection for commuting and a bit through the woods. Nothing crazy. Any advise?
Turned 64 and looking for a good set of elbow and knee guards, sporting a good skinned right knee and elbow from today's dirt buster but hey it's all good.
i'm looking for a kneepads that I can also use for snowboarding as well as mtbiking. What do you guys suggest? I'm thinking of the G-Form Pro X. I have the POC VPD Air but it was hurting the back of my knee. It wasn't comfortable at all.
I never wore knee pads either for a long time but I just started for (at least) three reasons: 1) The obvious bad crash. Better safe than sorry, especially as I push harder and faster on rougher terrain. 2) If I take a turn too fast on loose dirt and my tires slide out then my knee is likely the first point of contact. 3) As I start to jump bigger and tweak the bike more, pads prevent me from banging my knees into the frame or stem mid-air.
I was thinking about this exact detail, i have the ambush pads just because they open up.
Yeah I appreciate that too
Very good point! Definitely a nice feature that other pads don't offer. Super convenient to take on and off like you mentioned.
In terms of comfort: Do you use them for 20 miles plus rides, too, or do you put them on for downhill only because of their size? Since they're open at the back, their ventilation doesn't look too bad either...

Thanks for providing your opinion on which is your favorite. Love reviews, but come for the final opinion!
I've been using the G form now for a year and a half. Good protective pads, they also offer compression for your knee.
Just crashed today, messed up my shoulder and my leg, suddenly this video showed up in my recommended. 🙏
Same here shoulder and everything else the algorithm is listening

Here after a big crash yesterday, leg slid over a sharp rock, massive cut due to no knee pads. Lesson learnt!
Just done this yesterday. Sat here with a knee skin flap looking at knees pads

Ixs flows are pretty good in my opinion. Well ventilated, comfy and protective.
I ride the poc vpd 2.0 whenever I ride. Perfect all around pad imo
I like my TLD Raid that’s similar to the G-Forms and my Enduro MT 500 that’s like the POC. When I go to parks I have the RF with the hard shell

I rock the G-Form knee& shin guards combined with Triple8 shin guards to cover lower legs.

Very helpful, as I still ride with naked knees but have been thinking about a set.
keep up the good work on the top 5s. Good use of personal and shopper experience
Thanks! Let us know if you have any specific top 5s you want to see and we will do our best to make it happen :)
I wear the Troy lee design Raid and i love it!
I have the IXS Flow and TLD Speed.
The speed is my go-to every day pad. Super thin, not a lot of protection but I feel more comfortable wearing nothing at all, so anything helps. I use the IXS for BMX racing and Enduro use. They move well, and offer adequate protection.

I like it so much I have just ordered Kali Striker elbow pads.
I use the IXS flows. They are indeed very comfortable, pedal friendly, and well ventilated for Texas heat!

digomd I'd say they're true to size. They have some give but don't really slip. I wear large and fit my measurements well.

7iDP Transistion Wrap Knee, wear em all day, no issues.
I love Fox Launch Pro, I forget that I'm wearing while I'm riding (pedaling). I also use them under my snowboarding pants as well. Super comfortable....
Manolo Noriega not so great in summer tho.
Hi, I also want use the fox launch pro under my snowboading pants. But I am wondering did you feel pain when fall down? I have used D3O material knee pad before, It let me felt nothing when I fall down, even thought the advertising show the bone is being protected.
another great vid, reasons why i chose to shop with you. very informative
Thanks! Let us know of any other topics you want to see us cover :)
Prefer the Endura MTR knee guard great protection got a silicon gel strap top and bottom so great for pedalling ,also pad can be removed and replaced (if need be) and washed only £66.00
Very comfortable great protection also got memory foam with silicon straps can bike for miles without pads slipping

A lot of people doesn`t like the POC kneepads. I rock ION Kneepads.
The POC VPD Air
gave me blister on the back on my knee.
FUSE ARE THE BEST! THEY HAVE MORE THAN PAID FOR THEM SELF! THE ONES SHOWN HERE ARE GOOD BUT THE BEST IS FUSE
The poc joint vpd system hands down! I love them
road bikers should wear protection.

I like gform. Mine cover shins as well. Helps if you ride flats.
Great video. Now we need the elbow pads video too :D
Stay tuned :)
I use the Scott grenade pro knee pads, bit older but still In great shape awesome protection, but a bit tough to get off when your sweaty. 🤟🏻

This is the crossover content I need, Worldwide
7iDP transition or Sam Hill have been my go to after having tried a number of these.
I use the fox launch pros and think that they are extremely pedal friendly I’ve even raced xc in them
Here after wrecking my knee today. Guess I’ll buy knee pads
i can see some appeal in the raceface ones for flat pedal riders cuz of the shin protection
Great video, will be picking up some g forms soon :)
I adore my Poc Joint 2.0 Long knee.
I have the IXS & the Fox Launch pads. I love the IXS, I hate the Fox! Too big & bulky, and mega uncomfortable. Do the IXS FLow Pads run true to size? I'm right in the middle between medium and large. I'm 6' tall, 167lbs. Do they give in a little (or maybe a lot)?
They have a chart on their website, I believe. I just measured and ordered based off of that. Medium, I believe. They fit perfectly!
Yes, I checked on that chart, in fact. And my lower leg measures exactly 42cm which is the boundary between Medium and Large! I was wondering if medium should be snug yet not too tight. I think I'm going with Medium.
Hmm, make sure they have a good return policy just in case!
Nice review. How do you measure for the right size?
People with hairy legs, have fun with the G-form :D

I went off the bike on "velocity" at mammoth mtn bike park and had the fox pads on. They slid down my leg and I left some skin up there. Not happy!!!
Dang, that does not sound fun, glad you are ok!
Both my POC pads (VPD air and VPD 2.0 DH) slide all over my knees when crashing, I hate that about them. Since realizing that I’ve been using Fox DH long pads and have been very satisfied.
Too large?
Love the JonTron Reference
This video really helped thanks
POC ones anti slide ring on the top do rub your skin off on the sides of your legs. Abrasion if you pedal a lot. I would not recommend shame because padding looks good.
I use fox Launch pro. Good safety.
The pocs are sick af
excellent review...G form for me.
race face flank not for long distances, whell found that out the hard way on my first 30 mile ride last year...
Those G-Form pads are exactly what I've been looking for! Thanks for the video
Happy to help :) Let us know if you have any questions!
Wonder how the heck you wash them, though...
vara fouroneone that’s a thought, but true of most knee pads I guess?
you just put them in the washer with your other cycling stuff.
i wouldn't trust the machine & the dryer for my cycling clothing and gears. i wash them manually, all are still good! the machines will eat your jerseys.
Can’t decide on POC Joint 2.0 or Raceface Ambush. I found some RF for $65 new on Amazon. The POC’s still $120 so leaning towards RF.
I m gonna have to stop watching your videos with Yetis and Evils everywhere, it s ruining my life 😂 seriously, good video as always. I have the green ones exactly like the guy that crashes mid video. Are they good? I still haven t crashed... with these I mean 😂
Thank you! Yes very good knee pad with great protection, very comfortable as well. What kind of riding do you mostly do?
I do mostly chunky trails and a little bit of jumps . I like the pads. A Calling would be my dream bike for what I do...in Canada, you have to get a mortgage if you want an Evil....I could get it from the States, but then I would have to pay a 20% duty and it would get even more expensive...🤔
Great show in the market for a new set of knee pads will definitely look at these brands
I currently run Kali protectives strike knee pads
@@Luca-ft1kv Thanks so much, I will check it out, take care
@@WorldwideCyclery Thanks I will check it out, take care
sorry to hear that bro, that sounds really scary. i fell off while fatbiking in the fall of 2017 and actually tore my right acl. i had surgery last march 2018 but now i'm all good. can't wait to go back fatbiking but now with kneepads for sure.
I already order fox since 2 weeks ago .. I just wait... 😉
How are they?
@@andrei3720 good quality but important size
How are 7idp’s not included 😱
Where’s 7idp. Best knee pads on the market to me
i totally agree
Knee pads are cheep in the US!!!! Just bought a pair of 661 evo 2 from a German site €110 and took 13days to deliver? CRC were out of stock but similar prices.
good knee gear
Any recommendations for someone with larger legs? I’m 5’10 182lbs with 22” legs (4” above the knee) and seem to be considerably larger than any xl sizing on all brands.
Trail Skins 2 work great for me
I do mostly longer trail riding, moderate amount of climbing, and some downhill with some gnarl, but nothing extreme. Would the G-Form Elite be worth the extra length or should I just go for the G-form Pros
It depends on how much you protection you feel is necessary for your riding, I'd say it's worth it if you want that extra protection.
Alpinestars.
There's a reason why 7protection wasn't on this list, because there the best and dont need any competition lol
Oscar Bustamante truuuuueeee
IXS carve. going strong sofar 🤘
Cool knee pads....but how do they stand up to chafing.....with my fox's I get pretty raw skin after a 35 Km ride...any suggestions?
I will be doing a 100 mile endurance MTB race in 2 months, I am looking for the best light weight, breathable, long distance knee pad I can get. Which one do you recommend?
G Form for sure, you won't even notice them. They are perfect for longer rides :)
Thanks for your expert advice. i will get them .
G-Form's would probably be a good fit for that.
If anyone wants a light duty pad that isn't hideous like the g-form, check out the Leatt Airflex.
POC VPD air knees are developed for skiers and snowboarders. 🤔
I need new one right now. My old one ixs hack evo are not usable anymore.
I have never hurt my knees too badly mountain biking, but still if I do it would not look nice. So are knee pads worth it for me?
Tomi Saaranen Yes- never leave without them! If you fall you normally bleed- just not worth it.
Yeah, I kinda have experience about that... Not very funny🙄 I'll see what I can do
I never wore knee pads either for a long time but I just started for (at least) three reasons:
1) The obvious bad crash.
I always do just out of habit, would rather have them just in case things go wrong :)
I got them when a friend cracked his kneecap on a relatively tame trail. Also I bump my knees on the top tube a lot and they solved that issue.
What’s on my mans computer
Do they still make those 61ones. They were the best back 10 yrs ago
