    You definitely need a full face cross country helmet. I'm alive because of it. A Y-shaped branch got between my fork and the wheel, blocking it instantly. •  3 года назад +1

      Not sure pads help with tearing, rotating etc. I mean dont they mostly help with damping a direct hit against a hard surface?
      They might I guess change the way you break your fall, helping against other damage.

    • @IcecyOutdoors
      @IcecyOutdoors Год назад +1

      @@dylan-5287 Nothing insane about it and luck plays a small role. It all depends how and where you fall more than what speed you were going with or how lucky you are. Granted as the speed increases so the chances of getting hurt more, but something as simple as a pedal hitting you on the shin bone can get you a nasty big bruise that can put a pause on your riding. So protect yourself.

Though there are the 'squids' who talk shit, and call you a power ranger, or moonman...at least until they get their first taste of road rash. I like riding trails and motorcycles, and to decrease the chance if injury, and decreasing riding time, sometimes by the time the injury heals the season is nearly over, unless you live in an area with a dry and warm climate that lasts year round.

    This is a particularly sensitive subject for me. I’ve been riding for a long time. Crashes of various degrees are part of the lure of mountain biking. It is for me. I’ve been grazed, I’ve been wounded and I’ve been broken. A skinned elbow has made work at my top level difficult. A dislocated shoulder has meant being unable to make a living for six weeks. I rode with a full 661 upper body armour on my daily ride in Madrid summers because that was the deal I had to make with my wife in order to get back on the Ike after have Nga my arm strapped to my chest for six weeks and contributing no income. When I ca Mme back to Canada and resumed my passion for hockey I had an epiphany. Get the full protection and don’t compromise on price. Get the best because tomorrow I have to be on the job. This is something I should carry over to mountain biking. All of my worst injuries have happened not on a super technical trail but on little mistakes I’ve made on patches that are simple. I’m 65 now and I still ha be to go see not the studio after a ride and perform. With the tech now available I will tell you from experience... use all the protection. I dare someone to tell me different.

I was going too fast for the turn I was trying to make and the front wheel washed out when I cut a corner on the sidewalk. Landed knee and elbow first on the concrete, but that was after my tire kicked a bunch of half inch minus landscaping gravel onto the sidewalk, my knee found one of those stones. The hole was half inch tall by about and inch wide and put me down from riding for over a month. Moral of the story, no matter how mundane the ride may seem, knee pads are a good idea.

      A must is a helmet and glasses. But adding knee/shin pads and gloves won’t cost a lot in terms of body movement restrictions. Only thing I can say that is a drawback to knee/shin pads is the heat buildup. The climate where I live is very hot and humid.

    • @edmundscycles1
      @edmundscycles1 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Velo1010 that's why it's important to choose carefully . I used G-form pads for some runs . You'd surprised at how some armor can really restrict movement. Not because of lack of articulation but comfort. Incorrect fit or solid amour can subconsciously stop you moving (pinching or digging into muscles or just weight). Also distance. If your blasting round a short loop or runs with an uplift in the middle then yeah amour adds very little fatigue. If though it's a 20-40km XC ride ; that can soon add up and mistakes made. So it's all about working out what you need and wearing the appropriate safety wear. 👌

At the top of the trail was talking to my riding partner about elbow pads and needing a pair. Wouldn’t have helped much with my pelvis, mind, but would have stopped some of the scratches on my elbow and probably have taken more of the strain on my shoulder. After that crash, I bought some cheap and comfy basketball knee pads which are great in some light crashes I've had on the trails. Now that I'm starting to do some jumps, I've bought a pair of Leatt hybrid 3df knee and shin pads which kinda looks overkill for novice jumps but with my age, more protection is better than paying hospital bills.

    With how light full face helmets have become (Troy Lee Stage, Smith Mainline, Fox ProFrame, etc.), I'm seeing more people riding with them on any trail. It just takes one fall to break your jaw or lose some teeth. My son had a bad crash at a local bike park, but since he was fully padded up, only got a minor elbow sprain. EMT that saw him said without pads, that would've been a broken elbow. Armor up, the "inconvenience" is worth it.

    Shame South-African Blake wasn't in the mix!! Broke some ribs last summer in a crash on my side/back. Today, whenever I go out on unknown terrain or going into the gnar, I've got a backprotector and kneepads. My local trails are flat as a dime, don't need them there

    3 Blakes was a bit disturbing. I nearly always wear knee pads , and elbow pads go in my pack. Once my water is depleted I can fit my knee pads in the pack too for the mellow ride home.I ride better with Pads just the improved confidence.

    I got some light weight POC VPD Air knee pads, I love them. I wear them on every ride no matter what now, it allows me to be comfortable pushing a little harder and they're light enough I forget they're even there. Haven't tried elbow pads yet though.

    Ever since I started MTB last April, I always wear knee pads and gloves. They have helped me when I have whipped out. Right now I wear G-Foam Pro X2 knee pads in which they act as a compression sleeve for my knees and thighs. I also, wear long socks to protect from scrapes and pedal strikes.

    Protection gives lot of confidence. I don´t cosider my self a enduro or anything like thar rider, but I like to go fast in twisty paths and some times the front wheel 🙄 ... and when you go fast it hurts and something bad can happen. With some protection the injuries are much less painfull and you can improve some dificult rsections because you know it will not hurt if you fail.

    I tend to only wear elbow pads (after a huge crash I had a while ago ending in a bad elbow injury) - but even then only really on jumps because I know I'm much weaker on those. Techy stuff, I tend to stay pad-less

    I was a freestyle rollerblader for 15 years and I just got into mountainbiking by purchasing a new "Rotwild" bike and after some rides can definately say that it is a hardcore sport :O To be honest, I underestimated it completely... I need to get full body armor asap and a fullface helmet. You should think about it too! I think it is a good decision to wear something like that, when jumping etc. :-D
    Ride safe! Greetings from Germany to you all

    No brainer for me- pad up, full face and save injuries down the line or big dentist bills. Saved me in a sudden OTH last week and I'm super thankful 'twas minor thanks to the pads. Who cares if you don't look cool, I'd rather be safe now and be biking into my 70s and 80s.

  • @robanzzz5124

    Even back in my downhill days I ran minimal protection, it was literally just knee/shin guards to protect against stray rocks/pedal bite and my full face helmet, didn't bother with gloves or anything.
    With modern trail/endruo riding i just wear my helmet shorts a tshirt and my riding shoes and obviously helmet :P but the biggest issue is doing a big climb and having a blue track that borders on black in sections going back down when you're fatigued after climbing up a hill for an hour or two so even with all the protection it's simply not worth the risk pushing yourself unless you've had time to actually recover and somewhat replenish your energy/focus levels for the decent.

    Back in the day we would ride with road helmet and gloves. Also with 63mm of front sus, down the gnarliest stuff we could find. That's kids for you. The days of invulnerability are over though.
    My kit nowadays consists of knee pads, glasses, gloves and helmet for trails I do know. Harder trails or trails I don't know I up the protection with a T-Shirt with added shoulder, chest and back protection. The helmet might be upgraded to a fullface as well. Usually a backpack with water bladder is part of longer trips as well. Starvation is a serious problem out there. And tools can always come in handy.

    Smashed myself up on my snowboard when going for a grab on a table top.
    Landed on the flat top on my bent back..........
    Doctor said if I hadn't been wearing my armour, I probably would have broken my back and ended up in a wheelchair! Not that there's anything wrong with that (Martyn), but I prefer standing up!
    I now ride both my snowboard and MTB, with my armour on...........

    I NEVER ride without kneepads and gloves, generally on the xc. For the gnarly stuff I go all out protection. I recently fell at the beginning of a downhill descent and broke my ribs, it would have been much worse if I hadn't been padded up as I would have broken my arm too....... Still finished the ride though, so it wasn't all bad..... But I'm now saving for a vest.... Hindsight is a wonderful thing

    I have a friend who never wore any pads, he has one good crash, cut his knee open. Now he always wears pads and even at 40 degrees C he still wairs bulky elbow pads on an green xc ride. But even weirder than riding xc in 40c with elbow pads is that he refuses to wear a back protector or get a full face helmet on any trail. Even on gnarly DH trails with no ambulance access for miles.

    Knee pads always for me; if it's a techy trail then pads are for the confidence, if it's not, that's when I'm most likely to do something stupid and need the protection. Not bashed up my elbows enough to make me want those padded
