Jimmy Chang you saved my life last night, or at least my face.
I had always been riding my scooter wearing a bike helmet, or nothing. After this video I bought a MIPS full-face. Last night I slammed into an SUV that swerved into the bike lane, cutting me off. I slid underneath as it was rolling to a stop. My helmet and my chest were partially crushed under the rear tire, I was dragged a few feet.
Though I fractured my sternum and bruised front and back ribs, along with tear/bruise/road rash wounds on all four limbs - my head was unscathed (except for some scratches where the liner scraped my forehead a bit).
    Thanks Jimmy.
    Everyone, wear your safety gear!

I know people are pretty preferential when it comes to head gear or not. For me, I wear a full face Bell motorcycle helmet ever since I had an accident on my electric scooter back in November. Just on my way to work on a normal day's commute when I went over some nondescript slippery terrain, fell, and got knocked out...around 18 mph. Not even that fast I had a normal skate helmet, but no chin guard, which is probably where I got hit by the ground. I don't remember the fall, just the paramedics waking me up off the side of the road. Costs include medical bills and recovery time.
My helmet may be a little heavy and bulky and considered overkill, but in the case of another fall, I want some major protection covering my head and face. I still have some facial scarring. The risk of falling won't stop me from getting on my scooter or OneWheel, but I won't go without my helmet!

Jimmy I subscribed because not many in the OneWheel and EUC community are bold enough to emphasize the inherent danger in riding these things! My SoloWheel is great fun but it's also cost me hundreds in medical bills. I love these incredible machines but you have to respect them like you say on your channel. I will get a full face helmet thanks to your review! I always wear safety gear and a helmet, but realized I should upgrade my helmet due to this video. Thanks again and ride safely!

Good piece of gear to add Jimmy. Honestly, all those injury posts on Social Media, led me to sell my OneWheel XR. Everytime I access Facebook OneWheel groups its full of injury reports, many blaming the device and not their skills, and I had a hard time getting those messages out of my head while riding. It's all good though, I got lots of other dangerous hobbies (motorcyles and dirt bikes etc.), and stuff can happen on any of them, but I feel more in control of what can happen. Still fun to watch you and a few others shred it up though.

My EUC cut off at 18mph and even with wrist protectors, I ended up with multiple sprains in both arms from the impact through my hands.

    Cheers.

I think that helmet looks great on you Jimmy! I would definitely get one if I were on an EUC. I see similar helmets when I see EUC riders. Many of them pass me up when I am going 25MPH on my scooter.
The riding position on an EUC has the greatest chance of doing a full face plant crash because of the way you are standing. Since you have more a snowboard stance on a OneWheel you can more easily tumble roll on a board nosedive. I have already had to do that. You pretty roll over like beginning martial arts or gymnastics class trains you to do. My snowboard helmet protects or bike helmet provide protection for those type of hits.
My daughter says hello to your daughter. She has watched your videos and it gave her confidence to ride the XR and she is very good now and she is only 8. I think I may need to get her a Pint as she always wants to ride my XR :)

@@freshlycharged It is now pretty warm in the mornings so I usually wear a Gyro aero bicycle helmet. On colder mornings (below 40F) I wear a Gyro snowboard helmet with ear flaps. There is always a wind chill when you are going 25mph. I know the bicycle helmet should suffice as I used a similar helmet all the time when I mountain biked. I flew over my handlebars once on a single track and smashed a similar helmet and it protected me fine. I may get a MIPs helmet one of these days as I like that technology as I don't want another concussion.

I’ve been wearing a full face since getting on my onewheel. As a motorcycle rider I’d say the onewheel is actually more dangerous in urban riding. I was lucky to have a full face in my garage from my downhill mtb days but I would have bought something if I hadn’t. I would say get more of a bmx style that is more durable. Supposedly Master Chief's helmet design was based on a Motocross helmet, so I guess your impression is valid on that. Bell helmets seem popular, lately. I hope it serves you well, but more importantly that you never have to replace it. I'm curious though, between modular helmets with a chin bar and non-modular fullface, a lot of people say that modular can be a bad thing because it could break in a crash and cause secondary injuries, you obviously went modular, but to you think that's a valid fear?

    • @freshlycharged
      @freshlycharged  5 лет назад +2

That's a cool tidbit about the Master Chief. Like with most things, you sacrifice some amount of safety when you go for flexibility and comfort. I love the flexibility of the helmet, being able to use the chin bar whenever I please. For this reason, I will be more likely to wear a full faced helmet which would do more to protect during a crash than harm. I guess secondary injuries could be a problem if it broke during a crash, but I have little experience with that. In the end, I like the helmet and I'll wear it so it will protect me much better than a very protective helmet that I choose not to wear because it is less convenient.

The idea of the convertible helmet is to always use the chin bar when riding and to take the chin bar off only when you want to cool down between runs or talk to somebody without taking the helmet off as it's not as safe as a non removable chin bar full face and it ain't hard to take a helmet off especially with a magnetic quick release there is no way I would bother with one , just get a full face !

Byromie Just last week, I saw this typical thing: NYC. Pedestrians have the Do Not Walk sign. Most wait patiently as vehicles zoom by from across the street. Okay. Now all of those tons of steel on wheels have gone by. But oh, here comes a bicyclist...sooo let’s all walk against the light as he’s approaching - like right into his path because, why not? Even as a pedestrian that ticks me off to witness. It’s why I have a Loud Bicycle horn meant to warn vehicles but hey. If that were me, some people would lose their hearing for a minute before they’d cause me to crash.

My head has hit the deck three times while riding over the years and if I hadn't been wearing helmets at the times I'd probably be eating my meals through a tube and sleeping a lot.

I hope you never have to prove the safety of that helmet. Happy -- and safe - riding!

I hope so too. It's like air bags, seat belts, and life insurance... Hope you never have to use it, but if you do, you and your loved ones are sure glad you had it.

Wearing a full face with that much technology is just a waste, I mean come on, your on an eletrical one wheel thing, the reason I want one is for enduro mtb and hitting jumps
