Bell Super Air R vs Bell Super DH - What is the difference?

- Convertible helmets have been a total gamechanger in the mountain bike world. Not only do you get two helmets in one, but you also have the option to remove the chin bar for climbing, and reinstall it just before you drop into the next trail.
The Bell Super Air R and Bell Super DH are convertible full face helmets with removable chinbars. They are both brilliant, versatile helmets, but there are a few key differences, which I run through in this video. I also show what they look like when worn, both with and without the chin guards.
I hope you find the video useful :) Please drop any questions or feedback in the comments section below.

Great review. Points out the differences between the 2 clearly. Looking forward to your next video 👍
Thankyou, great to hear 😀
I bought my Super DH from lordgun on clearance for $140 and found the Super Air R on eBay and the seller accepted an offer of $100! I always wear full face when going down hill no matter the grade and I will use the DH for more aggressive trails and bike parks. I always remove the chin bar when climbing to get more airflow. Great comparison
Thx for sharing the difference between both helmet
No problem!
Great review. I had a huge stack on the weekend and split my Super Air R (it did its job 100%) so I've taken your advice and bought the Super DH model.
Cheers 🍻
Great view, thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thankyou for the lovely feedback
@@MudandnomakeupMTB All good, I brought the Super DH, great helmet and already got a dent in it so very happy I upgraded from my 'less-is-more' skid lid.
Everything I needed to know, thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Great comparison! Thanks!
Happy to help 😀
Appreciate seeing a women rider review. Keep up the informative content 🚀
Hi, thanks for the comparison and the review of both helmets! I wouldn't advise in putting your hair through the hole on the back though. When falling/ crashing the helmet needs to be able to move "freely" and if it gets stuck on your hair I don't really know that will heaped. Nonetheless, great video.
Ohh interesting! I always do this on open face helmet as it helps the helmet stay more secure!
Helped much more than the other reviews, thank you very much!
Thanks so much!
Good explanation, just what I was looking for. Now I know which one to choose. Thanks 🤙
I'm so glad it was useful! Thankyou for the great feedback
I love seeing ladies do gear reviews! We are shaped a bit differently than the dudes so it's sometimes helpful to have another lady review gear.
Thanks so much!
Thanks for a great video been looking at these helmets as well as the fox proframe, probably will go for the super dh. We live in snowdonia so we ride coed y brenin, llandegla, dyfi and antur stiniog pretty regularly so the dh rating would be better for the rougher trails. It would be great to see you do a video on your thoughts on the trails in snowdonia.
I prefer the bell helmets as they have the adjustment dial to make sure you get a good fit. I couldn't get a good fit with the fox proframe unfortunately. Thankyou for the lovely feedback ☺️ I post most of my riding content on my Instagram mud_and_no_makeup ✨
Ok wow, I did not expect the Super DH to be that bulky looking. Thanks for comparing both! Does the DH come with cheek pads with different thickness?
Im glad it was useful! Yes, they both do
Want the dh, but will likely go with the 3r..the dh is more expensive here and there I'll come out to be 2/3 the price of the bicycle I bought my wife lol, not sure if she'll appreciate that
Mate has the Bell DH… great bit of kit! Good video 👍
They are fab aren't they! Thank you, glad you liked it 😀
Great Info thanks. Now I need to go shop for one, lighter one for me..👍🏻
So glad it helped! 😁
Great review . I am still considering these 2 helmets. Either super Air or DH. Would like check, should I go for M size as my head size is around 56-57cm?
Best to check the size chart, I find it very accurate ☺️ if you're between sizes you might want to try both on to get the best fit and coverage
Great review Tess 👍
How’s your knee holding up?
Glad you enjoyed it 😁 the knee was getting better but it's flared up again, back to the physio tomorrow!
I like the super DH
Nice review! Would you say the sizing is the same for the two? I have the Air R already in large, and may be getting the DH, would you say large also? Thanks
Thankyou! Yeah, I wear a small in both ☺️
@@MudandnomakeupMTB Ok cool, thanks for the quick response! Still kinda hard to try things on at stores these days.
@@TheJofrica can you find somewhere online that does free returns? That's what I normally do as stores often don't stock smalls. Hope this helps 🙂
@@MudandnomakeupMTB Yeah Amazon usually does free returns here in California, pretty simple process. It is just you know, additional time, etc. If I can get it right in one shot, that's great. I want to ride! Haha
@@MudandnomakeupMTB I ended up getting a DH helmet and I like it a lot. Thanks for your feedback! Sizing was good. I was concerned about weight and ventilation coming from the Air R but it's doing well in that regard so far. Thanks again!
Any tips how to change the position of the cage in the helmet? I cannot find this info in manual ... Because mine float fit system dial is now too close to the helmet shell and it's difficult to reach in with the finger to turn the dial ...Thanks!
Nevermind, I have just figured out how to change the position of the cage and now position of the float fit dial is perfect. Shame for Bell this is not described in manual or quick guide, I saw many reviews which mention this position of float fit system is a flaw of this helmet ...
Glad you worked it out! Let me know if you need any more pointers 😁
@@MudandnomakeupMTB erm how can you change the position? :D
Cheers!
Thank you very much!! It helps a lot!
Brilliant, glad to hear it 😁
thank you
Hi! Can you tell me where you got the color of the bell super air r please? It’s for my daughter. Thanks!
I'm sorry i think this color has been discontinued now
I felt the super air r epp liner I could press it easily with my fingertip, how does the downhill version compare is it harder or about the same softness?
Great review. New subscriber
Thank you so much!
I measurred 58cm for my head and ordered a M helmet. I got it today and I got the feeling it will rip my ears of when I try to pull it on or off. Got the super DH one.
Also, when I got it on and open my mouth, my cheeks will be pushed between my teeths, so I think I will bite into my own cheeks badly on a crash event. I already put on the smaller pads that was in the package.
Is this normal with full face helmets or should I try size L instead?
Thanks for your help!
My head is 58-59cm and I ordered a L one and it feels more comfortable, I tried the M size and yeah I had the same issue as you and there are some pressure on your head when you tighten the retention bit. Though wearing it just the half shell looks big and you feel like it moves when you wiggle it but I think it's due to it's spherical MIPs system.
Mud and no makeup MTB, I ordered the same colour as yours.
I know it’s an old comment but I’ll give my $0.02. I don’t know if it is the same for bike helmets and motorcycle but I applied the same principals. I am 59cm and stuck with the medium bc the cheek pads should break in after a few rides.
With motorcycle helmets you want the cheek pads on a new helmet to push your cheeks a bit and they will break in after several wears. My buddy was wearing a helmet soo big that I was able to rotate it off of his head with a bit of force which was a lot less force than a crash. Biting your cheek will be the least of your worries if you crash at speed
I would say you want it to be snug but not uncomfortable
which one do you prefer and why
It really depends what I'm riding! If I'm going to downhill tracks or racing Enduro I go for the DH for the extra protection. There rest of the time I go for the Super Air R ☺️
Thank you for the review! How much is the weight difference?
Mine are size small and the weight difference is 270 g
Thanks n great vid 2 gd helmets there 👍❤️
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
😊
😄

Pro-tip for the Super DH:
If you have your chin in your backup rather than attached, and you crash with your bike hitting you from the back it will also protect you but the chin protector will snap.
Disclaimer: you cannot buy the chin separately for the DH
I wish I could give further of a review myself, but that was my first ride with it.
Awh no! Such a shame! Hopefully get a ride in with you soon
