Of course with the other to you can actually remove the whole chin bar. Just like a football helmet that the guard can be removed and helmet left in place for CPR or ventilations.... god forbid.
I've been riding with the Super DH for about a year now. Absolutely love this helmet. The versatility of traveling with one helmet that is DH (ASMT F1952) certified where I can climb with no chin bar and bomb down in a full face, or spend a whole day at the park with the full face is amazing. I had kept away from the super 3r because of the lack of certification. If I lived in a place where I did regular bike park days, I'd definitely get a second dedicated full face.
I was just telling someone i think i'll be taking the Super DH to Whistler this year over the POC. Clearly i have ulterior motives, but i will be riding some trail there to and if not filming, the half lid is super comfy and fits really well.
I know this is a really old comment, but I just want to ask: Is the 477 g without the chin bar noticeable? I have a 250 g helmet, and have been looking at the super dh for the occasional bike park visit with singletrack as the daily use.
Good helmet buying guide.. I use the bell super 2r and the mips was wreaking my head with the squeeky sounds so I rubbed some normal candle wax between the mips and the helmet and no more noise, I only applied it once and that was 3 years ago!
I bought the POC Coron air spin helmet because of your review. I was about to buy the Bell super 3r, but your review made me change my mind. THANK YOU!
@Petru Can you give me tips on sizing for the Coron Air? I have a 58cm melon but many reviewers say that with that head circumference you should go with XL/XL (59-62). Thanks!
I love my Sweet Protection Arbitrator. It fits me perfectly and feels comfy in both configurations. It looks very stylish, is amazingly solid and confidence inspiring. I use it for bike parks and other rides where I used to use my old DH helmet and it's worked beautifully. In half lid config it's just a bit top heavy but not so much that I would notice it in any way when riding. It takes a bit longer to convert from half lid to full face but don't give a toss about that as I usually do it once a ride. I use half lid when I cycle to a place where i need full face, convert it and when I'm done I convert it back to a half lid (that's as quick as in any other convertible helmet). Highly recommended!

So your saying the super 3r is smash face tested? Good to know. I have that one myself and I feel the same. Its nice to have the option on some crazier trails but if I was at a down hill park I'd want a dedicated full face.
It's tested. The grey helmet he was wearing is a super 3r. It's pretty much toast after that, but it did it's job. :) We screwed it to a post close to the Swamp Gap jump face as a "Ye be warned" marker. haha
Fit is important for sure, but being a little uncomfortable is worth it for the most protection. So I don’t agree with you but always love your videos. Keep em coming Tonka.
Jack Adler I think we’re on the same page Jack. When I say fit is most important I mean that proper figment provides the best protection because the helmet stays put in a crash. I look like Lord Helmet from Spaceballs, haha! Kinda bummed to find out it squeaks like that, but I'm only going to use it for park days, so hopefully it doesn't get on my nerves too much
It's funny, this helmet fits me better without the chinbar than the super....I may ride without the chin to ride locally to allow me to use the chinbar later when I want to film
I wish my parents thought it was ok to spend money on safety equipment. I ride downhill at highland and my mom doesn’t want to spend more than $50 on a full face helmet.
You should get one before you crash, I also bike in Colorado, at Snowmass, and I crashed and went to the ER and got stitches inside my mouth, if I would’ve had a full face I wouldn’t have gotten hurt, I have the magnetic one, with a detachable chin bar, which makes it better because I just detach it to take it off.
Very good point in your summary. It's better to have "a" helmet than no helmet at all (or even one you've crashed in before). Walmart has CPSC helmets for $25 and companies like SixSixOne and Demon have MIPS full face lids available for $150 even. Head injuries are no joke.

Nice job Joe, I've have the 3R for 2 years and not crash tested it yet, its become my secondary helmet, and I was thinking about the DH, but potential for noise would drive me batty! I do like the look of the fox proframe, but to your point, when I tried one it, it didn't fit my head very well. Now we just need a way to mount the Hero7 to our chin without looking like a dork! figure that one out please!
4:02 I am very familiar with this sound in a 2016 Fox Rampage Pro Carbon helmet, way too long name BTW, but for a different reason, the shell from the carbon shell, making this sound. so that helmet is retired, but the one I use is halfway of doing that. The chin pads on that helmet were awful, after few months I had to replace them, so needed to buy spares, cus they got compressed so much the helmet move in my chin. have you experienced similar issues with any of these or other helmets?
Awesome breakdown. Running a full face helmet up here in the PNW is a must. Mostly ride bike parks with lots of downhill. Lucky to get a sponsorship from Bell. Going to be wearing the Super DH this year. Keep putting out great videos.
Man that crash! Great video. Personally I run a TLD D3 for park days. It fits very well, is comfortable and has the emergency removal pads. I'll be riding Alafia for the first time next month but figure I'll have my half shell since, well, Florida in July!
Unless you're doing the Swamp Gap or the Rampage Drop, you'll be fine with a half lid. Though, you'll likely want something less than that because it's so hot. haha
This is a fantastic comparison video. Well done 👏👏👏👏. I have a moto-style full face for park and have been considering a convertible. This information is really helpful. Damn that kid face planted hard 😯
Yes he did. haha The super DH is really nice and i think i can do something to get rid of the foam rubbing sounds. Thinking a light layer of park tool grease. haha
I am not so sure about those magnetic buckles. especially after seeing a pic of a dh racer crashing and helmet coming off, but it was a Leatt helmet. I saw it on instagram, but can't find that pic. also I ma concerned about how secure the straps would be, if they go out of adjustment often or stay secure, this is why I love double D ring buckle, it's the strap adjustment, locking mechanism and a buckle, making it easy to open and close and secure, as long as the wet straps don't freeze, yes I ride in subzero temps, I have experienced very stiff straps cus they got wet and then froze, but I managed to open it anyway, but a min with my warm fingers would warm it up anyway.
Great video. Thanks for the info. I couldn't help but wonder how quickly goggles fog up with these helmets, and how these helmets stack up against the Fox Proframe. I haven't used a full face helmet since my motorcycle days, and that was a long time ago. The Adventure Continues...
Do you ever wear full face in Alafia or Boyette? Im debating on getting a full face because ANYTHING can happen when you crash. Also, where did you try them on before you purchased? No shops have them
Only when i'm filming point of view with the gopro. Otherwise it's too hot. You're right, no one has them. I had to order them on line and then send them back if they didn't fit.
6/29 just met you on the Troll trail in Santos network here Ocala, it was cool to chat with you, anyway I hope you decide to film Troll and Earn n burn should make good content
Thank you very much for this fantastic information! Great vlog! I just both my first MTB two months ago this will really help me to purchase a good helmet.
I have the Giro with the removable chin bar, I only use it when I am in a bike park, it is too hot otherwise. The chin feature is nice but if I had to do it all over again, i would have just bought a normal downhill helmet with the best fit and ventilation. for every day riding, I have a Scott helmet, it is the one that fit best. I tried POC but they did not fit me correctly. Most of my riding I never leave the ground. I dont know how that kid survived that crash, his neck must be made of neoprene.
I love my Bell 3R, when I ride without the lady or the kids, the removable chinbar is perfect, I tend to eat it a bit more often when I dont have them with me, hahah, but that Super DH looks like it will be my only helmet really soon.
@@MrTonka Update, i have the same experience with Super 3r. One hard faceplant from me, and helmet is gone for good. I had minor concussion. Lets see, how the Super DH will perform ;-)
QUESTION FOR MR. TONKA: Great video! Thanks so much for the review. Thanks to your other review, I purchased my POC Tectal Race in size M/L and its a perfect fit on my 58cm melon. Now I'm interested in the POC Coron Air, but in several reviews by fellow RUclipsrs with 57-58cm head circumference they had to pick the Coron Air in XL/XXL (59-62) size, even when they ride the Tectal Race in M/L (55-58). I understand you picked both the POC Tectal Race AND the Coron Air in M/L. My questions are: 1) What is your head circumference in cm? 2) Is the Coron Air in M/L the right fit or if you could do it again would you go to the larger size? I would appreciate your reply, as where I live my only option is to order online and I can't try the helmet. Many thanks!
I'm a 58. I think head shape plays into the Coron a bit. When I first put it on there was a hot spot on the top middle of my forehead. But I've gotten used to it and I can wear it for 8 hours of park riding several days in a row. No problem.
Good to know, I’m in the market for a tough full face for my jump session and my normal trail rides. I live in south Florida and my protec skate helmet is pretty hot as it is (😂)
This is an awesome review! I was looking at the super dh vs proframe. Super dh isn't sounding so good, feels like cheap plastic especially that "in a speaker box" feeling
the super 3r isn't rated anything more than a standard helmet. couldn't believe that when i read up on it...it's clearly 'styled' as if it should be...right?
Yes, but critical thinking and handling the helmet gives one all the info they need to see that. It's pretty much a one crash helmet, which to be fair, almost every helmet is, depending on crash severity.
@@MrTonka my point is, you may buy it as it is marketed towards the gravity side of things. You may receive it, try it on and be perfectly happy with it. It may only be when the moment you suffer a big one that you comentomrealise nothing about it is rated for gravity usage finding that the front of your face becomes mangled as the chin guard caves in. Not everyone will take the time to understand the safety ratings. They'll see a semi respected manufacturers product, see that it's full face, see the lower price, and assume they'll be all good to head out for a round of enduro riding. It's a dangerous precedent for them to be setting and could well be putting people's health at risk.
RULE 1=IF YOU ARE GOING TO WEAR A HELMET ; WEAR A FULL FACE HELMET. RULE 2 =IF YOU CHOOSE TO WEAR A HALF HELMET AND ARE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT; REMEMBER TO TURN THE PROTECTED PART OF YOUR HEAD TOWARDS THE DIRECTION OF IMPACT. IF YOU THINK THAT THERE IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO ACCOMPLISH THIS DURING AN ACCIDENT ; SEE RULE 1.
With safety being number one and price being number two, the coolness of the helmet would be very important to me. Coolness like in temperature not in "That lid looks sick"!. I can't imagine wearing my full face in the summer here in NC!
I wore a 2016 Fox Rampage Pro Carbon, in 30C. dry and warm, and I got completely soaked, and of course I had to drink and drink and drink. but now it's subzero on icy in December.
Great video! I have been threw about 6 helmets this past year trying to find the best helmet for me. I found the poc tectal and fox proframe fit me the best. Don’t matter how much they cost can’t put a price protection.
When I ride my bike with regular helmet, I hear a lot of wind buffeting. It's painfully loud. Do these full face helmet muffle this wind buffeting my ear?
Funny, I literally just purchased a Fox Proframe last night. I have been using the Giro Switchblade, but just feel that in a serious wreck that face guard may fail. Better to be safe than sorry especially at this stage of the game for me!
As far as i can tell, the removable chin bars do their jobs, once. But in reality, any helmet is a one time crash helmet. So if the chin bar breaks, but protects your face in the process, it's all the same as crashing in a dedicated full face, even if the chin bar of the dedicated full face doesn't break. But it's hard to beat the Proframe for ventilation. Good choice!
@@MrTonka Yeah I agree. I happened to watch a video of a guy who had the Switchblade and the chin bar did in fact protect his face, but actually snapped off and hit him in the neck afterwards. To me there seems like a bit to much "play" in the bar itself. The more you remove the chin bar the more it loosens up. No bueno. That Bell helmet you have really locks in which IMO is a better/more reliable removable option. Thanks! Seems to get some great reviews all around.
I made a list of fullface helmets I found some rarely seen helmets, but I also have some that are more known in the list. kit.co/mtbboy1993/helmet-consideration-2019 I am not sure which helmet to get, I don't want to continue with fox helmet if the pads are junk as the previous were.
@@MrTonka I haven't tried them, not sold here in Norway, like many things that are good, it takes long time before things come to market here. but I will look into the Kali helmets more. if it's good I don't care if it's gonna be expensive, I will order it anyway. I did that with my bike, and a lot of components, it was worth the extra cost to get proper stuff.
@@MrTonka I think the easy to pull out cheek pads is a must, so is double D ring, and lid that swings away, good ventilation would be nice for long warm days, not nice to get soaked and overheat in 30C, my rampage pro carbon was very warm.
Wow.. S3R..did a great job. That was a massive face plant and shin bar stood in its place. Great video comparison WITH PROOF...LOL.. 🤙
While it did it's job, the chin bar was broken and the upper lid was pretty well dented. But, that's what it's supposed to do. Thanks Bud!
Just to mention, he looks like a fairly light-weight rider. Massive crash nonetheless though.
I think 5:45 seals the deal. The ability to remove pad from an injured rider. Great review Joe, cheers!

Thinking a light layer of park tool grease. haha
@@MrTonka funny you mentioned greasing the pads. I was thinking, hey I could just hit it with some spray cooking oil. Shouldn't hurt the foam 🤷♂️
@@azdirtlife4280 I was going to shoot some WD40 in there but you're right. Cooking oil would be safer for the foam.
Awesome vid. I am looking to invest in a full face soon so this definitely helped narrow the list down.
Glad to help! 👍
Well done video Mr. T!
Thanks Brady!!
Sweet Protection Arbitrator is the best :) !!!
My buddy face planted off a big drop wearing the 3r, broke the chin bar, he had a sore jaw but was 👌. I have the same helmet, I’m a big fan.
one time face saver. haha
Just did my first ride with my new super 3r , think it's great so far ,hoping I never need to find out
What a wild ride!
Great review, MT. Entertaining, informative, good editing. 👍
Thanks Kyle! If anyone is reading this, Kyle is the man responsible for me getting a gopro and making a RUclips channel! Thank bud!
Mr Tonka you have a craft, buddy, and you’re hitting it in stride. Cheers!!
Just had a similar faceplant in my giro montaro (half lid) and have bought a bell super air r as it's replacement
Does not sound pleasurable.
Oh yes Helmet reviews! my fave!
Lolol You didn't even have to wait for it!
@@MrTonka The best kind!
Thanks for the in depth review, you're helping make my decision for me!
Glad to help!! If i can get rid of the squeakiness of the Super DH, it's likely what i'll take to Whistler this year.
awesome vid! thanks. hope the kid is ok! Keep on shreddin'!!
Maybe when it cools off i'll make it back out there. Good meeting you bud.
Awesome review! Thanks
Great info, and wow ! what a face plant Collin did. Must be nice to still be young enough to jump up from that. LOL
Thanks! Yeah, i wish i could take a digger like that and still ride the rest of the day. Ahhh, to be young... haha
Thank you very much for this fantastic information! Great vlog! I just both my first MTB two months ago this will really help me to purchase a good helmet.
Welcome to MTB!!
Great vid. You just hitted the kind of questions I myself wanted to address keep it up on these products reviews.
Glad you liked it!
What do you think about the Uvex Jakkyl Hde 2.0????. Congrats about the channel from Spain.🤙🏻🤙🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I haven’t had any experience with that. Sorry. 😞
@@MrTonka thanks anyway. 👍🏽
I've got that same helmet. Looks so good! Keep shredding!
Bought myself fullface TLD Stage after went otb, hit my chin to the ground and that’s hurt 😅😅. Glad he’s alright that’s could’ve been worse.
yeah, we were happy to see him pop up with a thumbs up.
All kids necks are made of neoprene. haha Wish i my body could handle that kind of stuff these days.
Have you tried the Super Air R? Trying to decide between that and the Super 3R
I haven’t. But the super DH is great. Minus the noise.
My TLD stage mips xs/sm thin cheek pads weighs 624.8 grams. Fit is great and light
Stage is a solid full time full face. New colors look HAWT!!
Looks good and works great
Thanks 👍
I love my Bell 3R, when I ride without the lady or the kids, the removable chinbar is perfect, I tend to eat it a bit more often when I dont have them with me, hahah, but that Super DH looks like it will be my only helmet really soon.
Flatwoods MTB I like the super DH a lot. 👌
Hi. Will the convertible helmet still intact on impact??
That cracking sound at 06:39 My wife thought it was one his bones. Scary.
It was very scary in person!! The crack was his head tube.
My questions are:
1) What is your head circumference in cm?
2) Is the Coron Air in M/L the right fit or if you could do it again would you go to the larger size?
I would appreciate your reply, as where I live my only option is to order online and I can't try the helmet. Many thanks!
I'm a 58. I think head shape plays into the Coron a bit. When I first put it on there was a hot spot on the top middle of my forehead. But I've gotten used to it and I can wear it for 8 hours of park riding several days in a row. No problem.
@@MrTonka Many thanks! I got the 59-62 and it has been working great.
Youre a good man, mr.tonka 🤘🤘
jake mtb thanks Jake!
That was extreme knar
Superb review 🎉
Glad you liked it!!
Excellent video man
How is the super dh vs poc in the ventilation department
Super DH is a fair amount better. The POC Full Face is pretty much strictly for park days that involve no pedaling.
Good to know, I’m in the market for a tough full face for my jump session and my normal trail rides. I live in south Florida and my protec skate helmet is pretty hot as it is (😂)
@@TheSpade83 Take a look at the Kali Invader. that's what I wear for hot full face riding. Got it after this video.
@@MrTonka do you feel it has the similar protecting at the chin bar?
Great review!
0:17 "But we'll get back to Colin in a minute, I promise..." he's at the cemetery, not going anywhere ;-p ;-p
lolol
This is an awesome review! I was looking at the super dh vs proframe. Super dh isn't sounding so good, feels like cheap plastic especially that "in a speaker box" feeling
S B I like the super DH a lot. It’s just that noise, which I think I can get rid of. We’ll see. 👍
I've got the laser phoenix x helmet it fits well but is uncomfortable on my ears it breathes just enough to ride around with and it's only £85
I love the colors on the Super 3R, but you need to have clothes to go with it.
A human highlighter.... pass. haha
the super 3r isn't rated anything more than a standard helmet.
couldn't believe that when i read up on it...it's clearly 'styled' as if it should be...right?
Yes, but critical thinking and handling the helmet gives one all the info they need to see that. It's pretty much a one crash helmet, which to be fair, almost every helmet is, depending on crash severity.
when buying online only though, looking/touching/feeling may not be a luxury that a lot of people may have.
@@weedfreer True, i generally buy on amazon and return what i don't want.
The original mr tonka
With safety being number one and price being number two, the coolness of the helmet would be very important to me. Coolness like in temperature not in "That lid looks sick"!. I can't imagine wearing my full face in the summer here in NC!
I'd say try wearing it here in the summer, but it's not much different from NC. haha So humid all the time.
I wore a 2016 Fox Rampage Pro Carbon, in 30C. dry and warm, and I got completely soaked, and of course I had to drink and drink and drink. but now it's subzero on icy in December.
This has to me favorite yet! And It's not just because I'm in it 🤪
Don't lie, it's because you're in it. haha
@@MrTonka and all my friendssssss
Great video!!! 👍
Most lift-served downhill areas require a full-face helmet. Some areas and races don’t allow convertible helmets.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
do you in qatar of this kind of helmet
Great video! I have been threw about 6 helmets this past year trying to find the best helmet for me. I found the poc tectal and fox proframe fit me the best. Don’t matter how much they cost can’t put a price protection.
Great vid
Great helmet for the price!
Leatt has a DH certified removable chinbar helmet coming out in fall. I did not tell you this. It is still a secret...
Lol
Colin and I have a lot in common. Except I wasn't wearing a full face
eeek.
@@MrTonka broke my face. Wasn't good.
When I ride my bike with regular helmet, I hear a lot of wind buffeting. It's painfully loud. Do these full face helmet muffle this wind buffeting my ear?
The POC helmet does. Rule of thumb is, the more vents, the more loud. Less vents, less loud.
Thanks mate for the info. Subbed 🚵♀️🚵♂️🚵♀️🚵♂️🚵♀️
I made a list of fullface helmets I found some rarely seen helmets, but I also have some that are more known in the list.
kit.co/mtbboy1993/helmet-consideration-2019
I am not sure which helmet to get, I don't want to continue with fox helmet if the pads are junk as the previous were.
I'm keen to check out Kali helmets.
