I'd say the foundation of Metallica's greatness was Cliff and Dave Mustaine. Hetfield never impressed me. Ulrich even less. There's a certain authenticity in guys like Burton and Mustaine. Hetfield and Ulrich by turn are businessmen. Lars only plays drums for a paycheck and it shows.
@@jondickenson8068 Yeah because they're mainstream as fuck with their music being in anything from the radio to movies and video games. Besides Slayers more darker than Metallica and thats a fact
Great video! I would personally include Dyers Eve as well. That's my favourite example of James playing incredibly fast yet still managing to make EVERY note easily readable. I usually name this song when friends ask me why I dislike Slayer in general - because neither King nor Hanneman could play this like James did.
@@drew3030 haven't seen a single one. I mean, good riffing is when you manage to pull powerful attack and low-end punch out of the guitar, when your riffs are crushing and easily readable at the same time. That is about amp settings, correct palm positioning for palm-muting, while precisely integrating into the song rhythm at the same time. Of course it's about composing too (Slayer are terrible composers, and Raining Blood is mostly terribly composed song). The thing about James Hetfield that makes him exceptional is that he was the first metal guitarist who managed to get amazing in ALL these areas. The second one was Jeff Waters from Annihilator, then Dimebag Darrell from Pantera (Dime is literally the best riffer in metal ever). No other thrash metal guitarist could get even close to these three guys.

Why people give thumbs down to this man's videos? Épocas diferentes e ideologías independientes metálica busco la fama mientras slayer continuo buscando perfeccionarse como una de las mejores bandas de todos los tiempos .
This was really good . James and Kirk are a part of my childhood. However if it wasn't for Hanneman and King I wouldn't have picked up the guitar back in 97. Decade of aggression taught me a lot. Then you did a Chuck Shuldiner vs the world..Yngwie locked and loaded . Yeah I subbed.
Metallica was generally more likeable for masses. Clear vocals, mostly neutral lyrics, catchy and melodic riffs. Slayer is the band that didn’t step back at all, in every aspect. Less melodic than Metallica, but from broader perspective way more innovative. Hell Awaits is a godfather album of whole future black metal scene to me. If I were to judge, Slayer > Metallica. But instead of judging, I’d rather just enjoy listening to both bands
Whenever I play a song that i enjoy, from a metal band I feel like it's got a more solid structure and it's more uniform , or linear, so to speak. Once you get the groove it's guaranteed that you'll have a good time on the guitar. But fuck man, metallica riffs are just on another level, the change-ups are ridiculous and the rythm itself is so fucking creative that I am always in awe, even after a million playthroughs, wondering how the fuck did humans come up with this shit? As an aspiring musician myself, it seems that what metallica does is beyond the capabilities of our species.
Same with Megadeth. Four horsemen (mechanic or whatever too) isn’t such a basic riff on tab but I always get caught up at having to go down to the e string
Man these styles are so completely different. It's what I love about metal. Two guys who are from the same era and subgenre can play completely differently and both can still be great.
Mustaine is the riff master Hetfield and Lars - Best song writers Hanneman and King - Thrashiest Scott Ian and Charlie B - Amazing Live performers and Fast punk based riffs.
Looks more like a Hetfield. :-) Hetfield is the genius of metal riffs. It's like Iommi in Hard rock. Very hard to compete. Jeff - R.I.P. You were a great guitar player! In terms of interest, I always liked Slayer's debut more than Metallica. But then Metallica pulled far ahead. The Slayer was catching up. 1988 and 1990 Slayer turned out to be very powerful albums, but in fact it was not the same band. Although in the late 80s I liked them more than in the middle of the decade.
As both are my favorites when it comes to down picking/ and speed James hails! Even Dimebag said it in a guitar world interview back in the early 90’s. Dime also said he loved Prong’s Tommy Victors sound and technique.

Now listen to the whole "SOUTH OF HEAVEN" album all the way through.all the songs..concentrating on the two guitars only..the one will be in your left ear and the other in your right ear....then listen to the master-piece of guitar playing...the hand-offs between riffs between the two players..the guitars are never both on both sides at the same time..they are always split up..Kerry in the one ear and Hanneman in the other ear..listen to the riffs while the one guitar is doing leads and the other rhythm ..then when they switch
......also the difference in tone and pitch between the two guitars...very well done.
You look like James Hetfield in 2019 but without beard
Oh YEAH! 2 of my MAJOR influences, great RIFFIAGE, thanks!
Welcome dude !
I’m 51, I really loved both the bands when I was young, Metallica changed too much after Cliff death. A bad day for several reasons
Spoken like the real truth. Couldn't have said better. Cliff dying = Metallica dying.
@@zoso1980 Well said Stephanie, awesome write-up. Isn't Hetfield like in the top 20 for net worth musicians?
@@slayer5813 pretty sure they are alive and doing well sooooo
@@jondickenson8068 Yeah because they're mainstream as fuck with their music being in anything from the radio to movies and video games. Besides Slayers more darker than Metallica and thats a fact
Great video! I would personally include Dyers Eve as well. That's my favourite example of James playing incredibly fast yet still managing to make EVERY note easily readable. I usually name this song when friends ask me why I dislike Slayer in general - because neither King nor Hanneman could play this like James did.
Metallica could never have written Raining Blood. That's the winner for me.
@@drew3030 Raining Blood is big unreadable mess, especially when the third riff starts. I say this as a musician.
@@stam1ska There are you tube video's from musicians that cover how to play the crazy fast part. I say this as a statistician.
@@stam1ska feel free to watch them then, then comment on them. You obviously have a closed mind because you strictly are only interested in one style. Metallica and pantera are not thrash.
Why people give thumbs down to this man's videos? They are very enjoyable with a little bit of humour, his guitar playing is excellent, the sound is very good and compares the riffs of different musicians who are in the same genre. I don't really see a point of giving thumbs down. I enjoy all of these "VS" videos.
SLAYER !!!
The feeling of Postmortem when played live is beyond anything. Dave's cymbal sound crushes and then the madness begins.
Ah dead skin mask and seasons in the abyss. I never tire of thee
Wow, I would say it’s a tie. Both of these guys are legendary and these riffs are all amazing. 🎸
2 amazing guitarrists, but if we're talking Thrash, Hanneman literally wrote all the best songs.
@Seven V Yeah, you'e right. Never seen someone spell Petrozza like that either.
@@danin900 Millie is awesome but kreator won't probably be what they are if Mustaine never existed
Metallica and Megadeth over Slayer, in my opinion...
J L I agree but don’t get me wrong I’ll enjoy some Slayer every now and then
@@niknak8299 same 🤘 they're good too, I can't deny. And even if I would not appreciate them wouldn't mean they're no good. That's just taste 🤙 I hate when people say some things are shitty because they don't enjoy them
Actually james always loved slayer and he bang to their music
Both are amaizing! Love both bands for different reasons!
Hetfield baby all the way, no disrespect to hanneman though
The one riff Jeff thumbed up was the riff Newstead wrote . Love it
Yeahhh ! James does everything to win this battle 😁
SLAYER
Hanneman Slayin! I like those drums to 👍
I might say Hetfield just for Harvester by itself. You can tell sometimes when the riff was written first and the words came along.
James hands down. Prob the best rhythm guitarist of all time. Plus he sings over top.
jon schaffer
Luke Miller hahahaha hahahahah hahahaha!
Can you do Kirk Hammet vs Marty Friedman(Megadeth And or solo carrier) plz
Hetfield even without the clean riffs but Hanneman still slays. Mustaine murders them all tho lol
In his prime Mustaine was a god even Kerry King could handle him saying “his riffs are too different”
The old Slayer-Riffs are the best.
I'm going Hetfield bc he is more of a versatile player
Not....Jeff just chose not to be.
@@ericstoecker2096 ......right
@@metalmaniac8640 How so? Hetfield plays primarily rhythm sections, he never rips leads and solos like Jeff and Kerry did. Unless you consider Nothing Else Matter's (versatile).
@@ScoobieSwisher7413 Kerry? That dude couldn't play a decent solo if Dave Mustaine himself gave him lessons, and Hetfield has done solos besides nothing else matters🙄
@@metalmaniac8640 Kerry was IN Megadeth at one point Einstein.....
Metallica is my favorite band so i obviously will choose metallica, but slayer is one of my favorites too
Épocas diferentes e ideologías independientes metálica busco la fama mientras slayer continuo buscando perfeccionarse como una de las mejores bandas de todos los tiempos .
toda la razón
Love them both but Hanneman definitely has the most recognizable style, just takes a few notes to immediately know its Slayer
James Hetfield es el dios de los riffs y Hanneman como escritor quedo muy cabron! y esta entre los dioses también.
Yeah I subbed.
thanks man !! welcome !!
SLAAAAAYYYERRRR!!! for the win. RIP Jeff. 🤘🤘
Fantastic playing and choices, but "Hanneman's" facial expression commentary really makes this haha!! Well done
Same birthday as Hetfield, thought Hanneman was the Man. Still do. A foundational pillar of Metal. RIP Jeff
Necrophiliac. That one surprised me. 🤘🏻
Man these styles are so completely different.
It's what I love about metal. Two guys who are from the same era and subgenre can play completely differently and both can still be great.
And the winner iiiiss...
*_JH!_*
The winner? ME! Getting to listen to killer music for so long. Nice Jeff axe BTW.
In my opinion Hanneman is better! I like Hetfield, but I like Hanneman more. R.I.P. Hanneman
0-0-0-0-0
I think it's quite clear who is the better riff master.
Jeff Hanneman all the way. Most memorable riffs & also an inspiration to us all.
Next do the Holt VS Mustaine
Hanneman is probably more thrashy, but Papa Het is the king of riffs
Mustaine is the King of riffs
@@antomustaine I don't agree
Anyway
Let's go with with Dimebag
@@apguitar8075 dimebag is the king of metal
In terms of metal riffs no one can beats Hetfield. He the best song writer in its category
Mustaine is the riff master
Hetfield and Lars - Best song writers
Hanneman and King - Thrashiest
Scott Ian and Charlie B - Amazing Live performers and Fast punk based riffs.
So glad you played "Read between the lies" this riff is awesome.
i love it !
Hanneman without question !
I agree with you Tobias I only like early Metallica, anything past And Justice For All is bleh/meh, lol. I don't particularly even like the Black album.
In all riff battles, Hanneman will always win with Angel of Death, simple as that.
This has blown me away, you're not just a metal guitarist you're one of us. Shortest straw, what a riff.
