If they sound like a Nigerian renter or Indian call center tech support its 100% a scam.
People Remember "Gift Cards" are for Gifts and not for payments.

If you think real scammers are still asking for giftcards you have a next thing coming 😂

Always check who owns the house with the county tax assessor's office before handing over one penny. Only pay with a cahier's check made to the order of the person who has been positively indentified by the tax assessor. Do not agree to any other way of exchanging funds.

As a real estate agent in Dallas I've seen it way too many times. They see a cheap house for rent and rush to send them money to be first to get it. Too avoid that just get a real estate agent. It's free and will save you time and hustle. Regarding what this guy said about meeting a landlord. Unless it for rent by owner, that'll never happen. Most landlords hire real estate agents to do it for them. Also majority of rental homes belong to either LLC companies or out of state landlords. Similar scams are also used in vacation rentals and pet sales.

Because the scammer is not in this country. And because the police don't care about scams; there's no money in going after scammers.

And having to pay that before even viewing the house is a bigger scam.
I have contacted a lot of 'property managers' who just are adamant to paying that fee before viewing the house. And even that cannot be paid using official methods like bank transfers, just through cash payment apps. One person asked for a security deposit more than the monthly rent just to visit the house, and was reduced to a cursing mess once I refused to pay using anything other than bank transfers.

No real estate agent should ever be giving the code to the lockbox out to anyone. No one should ever be allowed to view a house without an agent there and without giving full identification. How lazy and gullible are they to just send someone to the house to view it and give them the code because they're a prospective 'buyer'?

Do a title search, just like your trying to buy it. If the names don't match its a scam. And never send money via any app.

Might be people from that town. Or some other country. I do believe the landlords or brokers are also working with people who scam. It's like they pop up the moment the people try to move in. That's suspicious.
