Watching this in 2022 after I placed an order for the current CX5 in 2.0 petrol manual awd configuration. I’m impressed about how much the diesel was portrayed as economical and friendly for the environment and the amount of support offered by various governments to buy and run diesel back in early 2000 and mid 2010… Nowadays they are banning the technology and telling us to get rid of them. Long live Mazda and their normal sized engines (diesel and petrol)!
i don't understand the problem with the istop. My wife has it on her Toyota Yaris. You depress the clutch, the engine starts, you put it in first gear, and off you go. Try and drive off before the engine has started properly and off course you'll stall it.
He always trys to find faults when there's non there, I would imagine all start/stop systems are the same, press the clutch, engine starts, select gear. I always turn it off as its not good for the engine anyway
I test drive the CX-5 and the Tiguan in the same afternoon. I can feel the huge difference as soon as I get into the Tiguan. Regardness of the safety, the interior or exterior. The driving experience on Tiguan is way better than the CX-5. The CX-5 makes me feel like it's all make up with plastic........
I think start stop technology is more suitable for hybrid engine where the electric motor kick in faster while the engine is restarting..and being a manual car itself, has a good FC enough
No, it has a problem with the stop-start system. After restarting the engine does start, but not fast enough (as you can see in the video). That doesn't happen when you don't use the stop-start system.
I don't had a problem with the start / stop feature generally, but it gets admiring when I'm in right traffic, so I just switch it off until I'm out of the traffic
Just bought a cx5. I don't have a clue what mat is doing with the istop. You release the clutch after putting it in neutral, car engine stops. You put your foot on the clutch which starts the engine. Select 1st gear , engage biting point and off you go. He does seem to put it in gear and then let's go of the clutch. Of course you are going to stall. Was someone paying him to review that the istop is bad? Very bizarre.
Super review. I test drove one today and was shocked at how powerful the engine is, but I found the interior rather disappointing. No power seats, only automatic window was the driver's, etc.
Matt, can you explain why the car stalls ? In for instance a VW the engine would start as soon as you press the clutch, so by the time you've selected first gear the engine is allready up and running and you're good to go. I don't understand from your video why this doesn't work as well on the Mazda ?
I loved my astra elite ecoflex but I wanted something with low tax good fuel economy performance like the astra but with more space, this car is the exact answer.
Are you sure? The CX-5 is on the list of the 2012 Ward's Best Interiors, and there are soft-touch materials all-over the dash, but none on the doors, but still, for me, its one of the highest quality interior of any non-premium brand (aside from Volkswagen).
exactly, i was surprised he would be so close minded, it's an ingenious feature, it just takes a second and most of the time you're not even first in line
I believe it's a diesel engine, so I think it'd probably something like 45mpg if it were gas. Which would still be more than the US version. Not sure of my diesel->gas math but diesel definitely gets more MPG.
I have an auto-stop system in my Honda CR-Z and I've had no problems. Maybe the Mazdas and other manufacturers don't build well-enough systems. It's really not hard to stick with traffic.
Does anyone reading this have a 5+ year old CX-5 ? If so, have you had trouble with the automatic transmission ? Mine is giving a continuous whining sound. Surely a 62 plate CX-5 Sport Nav with SKYACTIV-transmission should not have transmission problems after only 64,000 miles (?)
To be honest I don't care about the pollution, all I care about is saving fuel which means saving my money. Anyway it all adds up at the end of each year to a massive saving. If you want to save money, use stop/start
Surely engineers would have thought about this problem when they designed the technology, right? I mean almost every new car model has such Stop-Start Technology installed now.
I really like the interior, i had drive this car and the driving position is amazing!!! The tomtom navigation is amazing and the seats are very comfortable, i love the exterior looks and the engin is amazing. The on
I like it because it saves the environment. It's either pointlessly waste fuel in traffic and pollute the environment or lose a few "precious" seconds waiting for the engine to start up, why make such a fuss? I'd be pissed off if it took 5 minutes but it doesn't so i don't really care to be honest
@@niemanickurwa I want to let you know now, I'm from North America. Really good for me. Never had any problems with it. I ended up being rear ended by a semi and totaled the CX-5 sadly. The CX-5 held up well to the accident but I don't know of any cross over that will win a fight against a semi. But up to that point and 60,000 miles, not a single problem. Just keep up with oil changes and such and you should be good.
@@niemanickurwa No not for me. I can’t recall if it has daytime running lights in America. I think it does. But if it does I didn’t have any problems with them. I did work at the Mazda dealer at the time and they were having issues with the LED headlights. The headlights were going out and multiple vehicles were sitting on the lot missing headlights due to it. But that was in 2016. I’d hope 6 years later all of that has been sorted out.
I guess some people can't appreciate nice design but everyone has their own individual taste. Your right about the civic but i guess someone in lala land likes it.
Is it me or does the media unit look like an afterthought? It looks like they've just left a square space there and told a 3rd party company to work with it?
I had a mercedes C class once and the start stop system is great. Its not like the cheap toyota fake in this video. its faster than anyone could start the car so it never fails. it really works and its great for city and for rush hour trafic on the motorway.
Every car comes with at least a three year warranty so therefore there isn't anything to worry about surely? Also why would a car company design something that would need replacing whilst under warranty? Sounds likes utter nonsense to me.

Wow this was almost 7 years ago. I watched this review just after i bought the 2013 gt cx5. What a memory
You see what i did there is it a good car im looking at a 2013 cx5 for a year or two before i get my new bmw x5
Young Mr Watson 😃👍🏼
How was the reliability of your CX-5?
My mom just bought one yesterday, finally I got some room in the back when driving to Spain for vacation 🙂
This car look's 100 times better than vw tiguan with boooring conzervative design..
Great review. I like how Mazda is sticking to their fun-to-drive engineering motto.

Yeah but the engine will fail much sooner than the mazdas lol
So How the tiguan after 10 years ?
I love the exterior design and the back seats seem incredibly roomy.
what an awesome car well done mazda!

love the CX5, definitely getting one
I want one! Thanks guys for the review

I think that stop start is quite a major safety issue rather than an annoyance
At Least the stop-start annoyance can be fixed ( presumably ) by the automatic version, which is probably the one we'd plan to get.
1:28 the best moment

I checked these out when they first hit the market here in New Zealand, they are pretty nice if this is what you're after.
Odd how I'm seeing interior complaints, and the CX-5 ended up on Ward's 10 Best Interiors for 2012...
Super review. I test drove one today and was shocked at how powerful the engine is, but I found the interior rather disappointing. No power seats, only automatic window was the driver's, etc.
The stalling is a bit bias. If you look at his leg, he depressed the clutch before he could even step the gas in the right manner.
Can you maybe make the 2016 model... it would make me very happy
guess the start-stop system works best in automatic cars..
0:49 in that indecent gesture?

istop and the interior aren't that bad actually! maybe a little bit biased but good review overall

great review!

Matt is there any way you can get the volume louder? Your presentatoin is great, but your voice loudness dips up and down and sometimes i cant hear...
I prefer to let it run as stopping and starting the engine wears out certain engine and transmission parts faster than just letting it run.
The Tiguan has a 2.0Turbo engine, and is based on the GTI platform, it is indeed far more sporty.
... and therefore by default orders of magnitude less reliable.
To be honest I don't care about the pollution, all I care about is saving fuel which means saving my money. Anyway it all adds up at the end of each year to a massive saving. If you want to save money, use stop/start
I think there is a configuration error, don't think Mazda has thought it to work like that. Well, have to test it myself sometime soon.
I didn't get the thing with the stop start system and stalling the car...
it s not fair you pick the base model i never seen base model in my country. front seats are electrical and it has sunroof..
How are the front seats? On the 2017 model it seems they are not comfortable.
Wrong
Did Matt have his foot down on the clutch during the stop-start, it looks like he just went into first and then took his foot of the clutch?
I started to shout like crazy when matt was about to hit the Audi A5 behind him!!! AUDI
It's still sold in most of Europe, but not North America, IIRC.
Done 3000klms in mine and cant wait to sell it. Well made but not enough room for a family. Luck to get 450klms from a tank of diesel.
That fella should be selling sofa's, not cars. ''No, the booster seat is for me''
"Full sized adults" he says. Not him!
CX 5 any day mate... I brought one and driving it from last 2 months... awesome drive... But go for 2.5 L Awd.
How was the reliability from your CX-5? And general experience
the face on it! I love it.
Looks like the driver seat moves forward as you raise its height. That would annoy me.
Im watching this in 2024
Love it... Love the zoom zoom
i have not seen any new videos or design for the phaeton.
i live in the UK and they still have the old design????
Surely engineers would have thought about this problem when they designed the technology, right? I mean almost every new car model has such Stop-Start Technology installed now.
Nice car, impressive design and good value!
Hope we get the Skyactiv diesel version in the US soon.

Where is this filmed? Thank You!
Dashboard and all door panels are made from hard plastics?
what is the average gas consumption?
Keep in mind that the UK gallon is larger than the US gallon.
I have the 2016 CX5 grand touring AWD with black rims, neener neener.
Any petrol choices ?
plz.review the 2013 mercedes a class with amg pack

I cross shopped the CX-5 and the Tiguan and I bought the CX-5 because it had a more sporty ride then the vw.

What color its that ? Blue or sky blue ?

Perfect car!!!! I'm in VN and I got it just for a week. It costs us $51k...

hello, please tell me how to change language on my cx5 screen from japanese to english
60 miles per gallon or 16 miles per gallon?
We have a CX-5 2.2 skyactiv, the head gasket has shat itself but otherwise love the car, loads of poke, good on fuel and looks pukka!
1000 times better than James
Nice car, looks much better than the tiguan. I like the start stop, on my BMW it works great
My first choice for an SUV.
i like it. it works great in our mini.
And here in Brazil, people never seen a Mazda D:
He didnt put the car in park. Its a 6 speed manual, he put it in neutral.
Why don't we have the diesel in the states, why?!?
Ivanf2808 as you can see that there is the option to turn off the i-stop function on the right hand side next to the steering
the hard plastics on the new Ford Escape (Kuga) is even worse
PandaUzumaki great review man! (agree completely!).
So powerful, it can tear a caravan to pieces...
What's better. The Mazda cx5 or the Renault kadjar?
Techtris definitely the Ford RS Turbo mk1
Mazda all the way
