for ur answer on the emery cloth question the term "emery" comes from the type of rock used as the abrasive they glued to the cloth thus making it emery cloth
Thanks Eric, I was in the middle of changing the lower control arms on a Focus and got stuck at the pinch bolt. I sure felt stupid after about 10 minutes of hammering when I saw all it took was a good blast from an impact. Also I used your paper towel trick to make a 22mm wrench fit on a 21mm nut for the first time, that saved me a trip to the tool shop.
Funny that you did one today. I did an upper yesterday on my nephew's 02 4x4 Chevy Trailblazer. It was ridiculously easy to do, especially with the ball joint press tool. He rented the tool from AZ, made me wish that i took the big one with me when i transferred from one shop to another a couple of years ago at the dealer i work at. I left behind a giant one, it was left behind by the Hummer service techs when they moved to another dealer in our group. That one woks so well on everything.
To answer the question on emery cloth and sand paper. One is cloth as stated and is sturdy in use. The other is paper and does not last long. There are different grades of both. Thanks Eric for all the videos.

That lower control arm tool works well and doesn't damage the ball joint boot when you only need to separate the ball joint. I bought mine 25+ years ago and I use it to hold open the back door of the shop...lol
Eric I love you videos . I have worked on vehicles for 50 years and watching your channel I have learned a lot . I have replaced 100 s of front Brakes by watching your channel the way you do it makes sense by taking the calibers all the way off and cleaning all surfaces and never seas all the surface . It's called Emery Cloth because it has ground up emery for the abrasive. Good for sanding metal and doesn't leave particles behind as bad as traditional sand paper. My dad was a plumber, and it is the perfect thing for cleaning the ends of copper pipes before soldering.
Another fine video by SMA. The tool that you made is it called the Power hone and hole cleaner ( use at your own risk) Patent Pending of course. I can't get enough ball joint/brake job videos. Thank you

Good on you, Eric! Congratulations on your video win. I have shared a few of your videos with my wife, who has supported me much in the same way Mrs. O does you for the last 41 years. You gave me some tips I'd not seen in other videos. Thank you. I don't know if you did it (I only watched your video to about 6 minutes), and not a tip I'd seen elsewhere, but I found that removing the upper strut > knuckle bolt & loosening the lower bolt made removing & re-installing the ball joint stud MUCH easier. It allowed me to match the angle of the stud to the arc of the swing -- you'll know what I mean if you try it.

Emery cloth is a type of coated abrasive that has emery glued to a cloth backing. It is used for hand metalworking. It may be sold in sheets or in narrow rolls, typically 25 or 50 mm wide, often described as "emery tape". The cloth backing makes emery cloth stronger in tension than sandpaper, but still allows a sheet to be conveniently torn to size.
probably wise, because of "rubber bushing" failure. but they look strong overall, as compared to the thin boxed junk that rusts from inside out (gm, hyundai and others) ;) pretty much ball joints and bushing fail around the same time in the rust belt and also the boxed arms rust out from inside out here. I nearly made the mistake of getting ball-joints and bushing for a vehicle, but by pure luck I went with slightly cheaper "time/material" cost and got the whole arms, I only noticed after I pulled them off, that they were very swiss-cheese rusted out and ready to cause a wreck forget the other parts failing!
We like wrecking ball videos like this. The more the car is rusted up and work it takes to bust it up the better. We are talking 5-10 on the beater meter, though we’ll take 1-5. Merry Christmas, here’s hoping Santa brings you no Dorman parts!
Pro tip. For inserting the new ball joint if it's being a pain in the but. Put the new ball joint into the freezer for about 30 mins to an hour it will cause the metal to contract and make it easy to pop in the control arm.
Except that's not a "Pro Tip". Pros have the impact wrenches and BJ press tools that get the BJ in without having to find something else to do for 30 minutes while a BJ gets cold. I'm not saying it's a bad idea if you NEED to do that, but spare us the "pro tip" line when it's the opposite.
I used to have a Taurus wagon and wish so much I had a leveraging tool like that for the control arm! I used a 2x4 combined with loosening the under carriage bolts a bit so that it had enough clearance to get out due to the extra length they put on the ball joint
Just came across your video. Excellent job and quick! I've got a 2006 Ford escape that I'll be inspecting tomorrow. After replacing the sway bar links, I still have a little rattling going on. Didn't inspect the ball joints to see if they were bad also. A lift would be nice!
great use of two pickle forks..this weekend i have to change out left and right lower ball joints on an 2008 escape..i replaced both lower control arms about 4 or 5 months ago..of course of lesser quality on line...and now have to deal with this... the lady friend i did this for is upset ...as usual cheaper is not always the way to go...tired of cheap parts that don't measure up
Always amazed to look at the rust on those salt-belt cars. This summer I bought an '08 Mariner one owner with 106k (same as the '11 in this video) and it looks new under there compared to this one. Great info though, if I or my GM technician son undertake this project when it needs it.
Prior to my retirement and I was still building machinery. I used the flapper type method on numerous occasions and it worked great. Glad to see the old methods being passed along.
Awesome video!!! Very satisfying to watch. I don't have the tools.... I'm torn about having a shop do it. If I thought they'd do as good of job as you I would take it in. I have trust issues!
Another tech i work with was using a drill like that around freshly sprayed brake clean and the fumes caught on fire in the fender well he was working in. Brushed electric motors can set that stuff off pretty easy.
Eric O we've had awesome luck with the TTX Ball joints been using them a lot on jeeps and F250s. Not sure what your findings are but they make the steering very tight after there installed... Only time will tell how they wear. BTW You should really try a penetrant called FREE ALL. I can promise you it does work better then your beloved Aerokroil.
Thank you infinity @South Main Auto... I have a Ford Focus and it really helps with the lower ball joint videos. I must admit that I instead of preying the bars of, prefer hitting the arm itself with a (flat) chissel (basically block of metal) and a 2kg hammer at the other end... It pops them right off and I avoid damaging the boot. Idk if the impact will fuck up something else?
With the snap ring retainer, how tight does the press fit have to be? I know when not tight enough, many put 2 or 3 spot welds to hold the ball joint in place. Perhaps not necessary with the snap ring? Also, any tips for when the inner bushing bolts are rusted to the bushing sleeves? And of course the frame capture nuts make things even more "interesting." THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO!!!!!
The heavy duty green "Mevotech" ball joints. Work great but the boots only last a few years until they start to crack. Grease start to ooze out. I have the same ball joints on my 05 Ford Explorer.
nice Eric the job looked fairly easy and that ball joint was a cleaver design all I have had to deal with are on my GM vehicles. a way different animal.

Glad to see the old methods being passed along.
try a flapper, before you send it to the crapper
Awesome video!!! Very satisfying to watch. I don't have the tools.... I'm torn about having a shop do it. If I thought they'd do as good of job as you I would take it in. I have trust issues!
Man, it’s been 5 days since a vijayo. I’m over here jonesing for an SMA hit.
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, O-family!
Thanks dude, I was having an issue getting these off of one. I never thought of using to forks like that.
Thought miss Hannah was challenging you then when she said she could do better lol. Nice to see her back on you tube
Another tech i work with was using a drill like that around freshly sprayed brake clean and the fumes caught on fire in the fender well he was working in. Brushed electric motors can set that stuff off pretty easy.
Great video, how can tell if bushings and ball joint are bad without taking it apart.... thanks
I love the sledge...good old tap hahaha. I don't know why but I found that hilarious. Your vids are awesome.
Sorry Eric just got to say it. Great job using your PICKLE FORK. Another good video.
The ttx ball joints are great I like the cotter pin they come with.
100% agree!!
I’ve been doing some research and everything I can find is bad experiences with even their TTX line..... hmmmm and insight Eric?
Love the snap on torque wrench used it all the time from shop owner oldy but goodie
Congratulations on your Cordone Award!! Look forward to any upcoming videos on the acquiring and rehabbing the vehicle for the single mom!
And of course the frame capture nuts make things even more "interesting."
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO!!!!!
Eric,
Great video - thank you to you and Hannah.
SMA#1
God bless
Paul
Wikipedia says emery is a kind of rock that is used to make the abrasive on emery cloth and emery boards (for those of you into nail care).
You actually make the job look fun!
