  • This video was made to be a visual aid in assisting you in you project of replacing a lower control arm on a 01 Ford Escape. This design has been used on the Ford Escape for many years and they commonly fail in a similar fashion. (torque specifications may vary from year to year) I believe that you'll find that this video extremely helpful in your project. If you have questions please comment below. I usually respond within a 24hr period of time. Good luck!
    Note: The method shown in the video for separating the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle is a method that I've used for years with no problems. However, I do not guarantee that you will not damage your vehicle using this method. There is a tool out there called, a "tie rod end separator". The use of this tool can greatly help in separation of the outer tie rod end without causing damage.
    Here is a link to a video showing the use of this tool.

    Thank you,,,great video,,,the tip about taking the measurement of the center hub is great,,,no other video specifies that ! The best way to put the arm back in is 1 - Frame bolt , 2 - balljoint bolt 3- the last one lol !, using the jack under to lift it and secure in place . NOTE : The ball joint part is pretty hard to remove, i put the jack under the disc (using a piece of wood on top of the jack to not damage the disc) and this helped removing the ball joint from the hole

    According to Haynes:
    Pinch bolt 52 ft/lbs
    Front pivot bolt 85 ft/lbs
    Rear mounting bolt:
    '01-'02 = 148 ft/lbs
    '03 = 133 ft/lbs
    '04-'06 = 148 ft/lbs
    '07-? = 110 ft/lbs

    this is a great tutorial, i have this same job to do on my 2014 escape, so i have watched quite a few vids, sadly not one of them mentioned about setting the car to ride Hight before fully tightening the bolts, so thanks very much for the info it will be a great help.

    Great video I'm learning a lot
    I actually did replace my escape 03 both control arms and now I see what I did and what I did not do well lol
    For instance I did not know I had to adjust the higth of the well before tighten the bolts !
    But I noticed no diference after I was done so far is been about 8 months and Nothing is wrong with them I think.? Took it to the alignment shop right after and everything is been fine.
    What do you think?

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  6 лет назад +2

      You may be OK. It just stresses out the bushing too much. You may have premature failure of the bushing. It wont happen over night. I'd role with it. If they fail they fail. Hopefully they fail while under warranty or you'll be out some $. At this point I don't know if loosening the bolts and then re tightening them will may any difference. You could try it. But if you do have the alignment checked.

    I think I need to replace mine too. When I turn the steering wheel at slow speeds it makes an awful creaking/ rubbing sound. I was under the car last night looking at it and I’m pretty sure the bushing inside it are shot. It looks like it’s just hanging down at an angle

    note: u need weight of vehicle is on the floor jack and not on jack stands for final tightening of control arm.
    why alignment? u didnt adsjust the length of tie rod and there are no other adjustments for alignment, afaik, so no alignment needed, imho

    Great video...am think about undertaking this exact job myself...no mechanical experience what so ever. 😆 lol 😆 am I crazy...paperwork to prove it.
    But I need it done and was being quoted around 150 labor each arm.
    Is that to high.
    I think I can so it.
    Maybe I'll make a video and see if I can make it look as easy a you did.

      150 per arm is resonable. Yes! Make a video and post it. I'm sure it can help folks.

  • @genericusername1365

    Question for you: Can you just put the wheel on and lower the vehicle to the floor and then tighten the two control arm bushings (like how you mentioned from 11:41 - 11:53) at that point instead of measuring for ride height? Wouldn't that be the equivalent thing or is it really necessary to measure for ride height even if it is done the other way you mentioned? Maybe 'cause there's not enough room to crawl under the car when it's on the floor?

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  6 лет назад +5

      You got it. Its difficult to get under the vehicle, especially with a long torque wrench but it can be done. I would still measure ride height before jacking the vehicle up if you do it that way. Be sure its at the same ride height afterward when you torque it down.

    So bad bushings can be bought as they go bad and I need a purchase a complete lower control arm?

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  5 лет назад +2

      I think it's best as the other bushing and the ball joint are just as old and are probably close to failing if they haven't already. But, I suppose you could just replace the bushing if they are available. To me it seems more efficient and less head ache to just replace the whole thing.
