- Can you make a faded paint finish shine like new? Let's find out. In this video, I use a high speed buffer and some rubbing compound to make a very faded paint finish shine like new. If you don't wish to personally try this, you can have your car professionally detailed using a similar process. Thanks for watching the video!

Crazy watching this video on how far you've come from your videos editing and details that's always interesting to go back and look where someone started. You found your niche on comparing things and stuck with it. Good job your videos are the best comparison videos I've ever seen
Thanks so much!
This video was posted in 2017 and project farm still responds to comments. Thank you for all of your hard work and entertainment sir. I watch every video
Thank you very much!
Speaking of polish.... P.F. is one of my favorite channels. I make sure to watch (and like) every video he puts out. It's interesting to see the polished professional difference between now and 3 years ago. But, he still maintains a genuine, comfortable interaction with the viewers. Today, he would compare several different types of compounds, their effectiveness, and longevity. Keep it up!
For a couple years I was a detail snob, I was buying the big boy products and probably had $500 of top notch cleaning products all the way from fancy polymer soaps, claybars, cutting, buffing, and polishing compounds, right down to $50 waxes and synthetic polymer UV coatings... I'm sort of over that phase, but I can tell you one thing is for sure: that meguiars ultimate compound is gonna get you 98% of what $150 of multi tiered cutting and polishing is gonna get you. I mean honestly if you want to get it to 100% just use the ultimate compound and then buy some meguiar's #7 glaze... but honestly it's not worth it.
Jesse, Thank you for this information. This is all good to know!
A buddy did his black MR2 with this stuff and I was so impressed I went and got some that same day. 👍
Great post and I agree. I had used a comprehensive Chemical Guys set and their orbital buffer for years. Don’t get me wrong their stuff is great, but with a car in already decent shape it’s such overkill.
Nowadays I use Mother’s cleaner wax on a softer hex pad, and then follow up with a good sealer. Twice a month, and I use a pressure washer/foam gun/Meguiars quick detailer every other week. Car looks amazing even when it’s dirty.
Meguiars ultimate compound is soooooo underrated. Excellent product, with no fillers.
Great point! It's a great product
Watching your old videos it's clear how much you improved your eloquence, congratulations. Cheers from Brazil
A friend of mine and I decided to do buff one of our employees vehicles for him, the best part is, we just did one circle right in the middle of the drivers side door... Yeah its been a few years and he still hasnt buffed the rest of the truck... but man the middle of that door still looks great!
lol
What a trick to play on someone...
Maybe you should have buffed the words, "WASH ME", into the side or hood.
Finish it off for him 🤣😂🤣
Funny but cool story 😄👍🏾
Thanks for sharing
You should compare these compounds
Thank you for the video idea!
@@ProjectFarm He's checking comments on a 2+ year old video. You never cease to impress me.
@@ProjectFarm if you would like, I have a 25 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee that you can fix all the rust, peeling clear coat, and faded paint just to see which one works the best on it.
Rockforce80 Thanks for watching
OMG, I lost it when you said you can hear the difference and starting rubbing both. That's incredible!
Thanks for the feedback.
This is exactly what my 83 needs! It's been in the barn for 20 years and the paint looks very dull, not shiny. Thank you!
Thank you!
Excellent job with the video.😊
Thanks!
I recently bought a “barn find” 77 Triumph Spitfire. The car has been sitting for many years, so the paint is pretty old and faded. I too wondered about the claims of different polishing products at reviving old paint. I split my hood into 4 sections and used Turtle Wax rubbing compound on one square. I used Turtle Wax polishing comping on another. I used Mother’s California Gold Brazilian Carnauba Cleaner Wax liquid on the third section and McGuire’s Ultimate Compound on the forth. All products were applied with a clean foam pad on a Craftsman random orbital polisher. I applied each product via the polisher and went over each section for about a minute. Hands down winner was McGuire’s. Don’t know what’s in the stuff, but it really is an excellent product. Thanks for your videos. I am a big fan of both your methods and your madness.
Thank you!
I love highspeed buffers! Good job on that. No swirl marks or anything. Now you gotta do the whole truck so it matches lol. Thanks for sharing!
LOL! Too much rust on that truck! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Dude, your videos are so much better now. I see this channel mentioned in Amazon reviews all the time. You are doing a great service for So many people. I hope you are making some good money for all your hard work.
I appreciate that! Thanks!
The results from that section of the hood are beyond startling and not at all what I was expecting. That is some good stuff! I have a few Meguiar's products like PlastiX and the coating for the headlights, but never considered even trying the rubbing compound. I have a perfect vehicle, complete with 23 year old peeling clear coat, that could really use some "magic in a bottle" like this product, and also have the buffer and wool bonnets.
Thanks for the feedback.
A quick trip. If your pad is gumming up or getting build up on the paint surface, use a spray bottle and mist some water over it. It helps to lubricate the pad a bit and will eliminate the build up during wheeling out.
That's why one some vehicles you see the hologram swirl look. Mainly at used car lots
Great tip! Thank you
Project idea: buffer/polishers compared. Especially options for different price points.
I'm finally in the market for one and don't know where to start. It would be great to know if spending more is really worth it. I know this may entail a lot of up front cost, but I think a lot of people are interested in this kind of product comparison.
That came up looking great. Now you're definitely going to have to do the rest of her now. Brand new vehicle again. 👍
Customwinder, LOL! A lot of rust on this old truck! Do you have an automotive buffer?
No mate. I'm scared to do that on my car. Got a few mates who do it for a living. My older ute i would have a go on. Good one mate 👍
Thanks and take care!
Project Farm You too mate👍
Boy I tried doing that on my 1967 opel kadett back in the middle seventies and all I had was elbow grease. I didn't get very far, haha. But the wee spot I did get done looked as good as this video, so that rubbing compound really works. You just gotta keep it up however without a clearcoat. What a gift clearcoat is!
Thank you for the feedback!
Acrylic Werks polish works great on that old paint. My buddy gave me a bottle for my '88 Fords tired original paint. I was stunned at the results. Plus it cleans and polishes a fiberglass boat like a champ.
Thank you for the product recommendation and thanks for watching the video!
I had a 2008 Toyota on which the paint looked and felt old and rough. I thought it needed polishing or even rubbing compound, and knowing that doing an amateur job with rubbing compound can eat thru paint on edges, I called a professional detailer in. He looked at it and said he could handle it with clay....I believe Meguire's is what he used, and the car was beautiful...very much like new. With WAAAY less risk of cutting thru the paint on sharp edges/corners, etc. I became a believer.
Wow, the production quality of your videos has skyrocketed over the past couple of years! Just came across this one, and still a great video, same with the results!
Thank you! LOL
I was thinking the same thing. Now I have a 2000 ford ranger to clean up once it stops snowing in the frozen heck hole of hoth known more commonly as Canada. Lol
It’s amazing how much your videos have changed over the years. I hope I can improve this much with my channel.
Thank you!
30 seconds after the camera was turned off, OCD kicked in, and he had to do the entire truck so that it all matched.......im kidding, I'm just projecting what I would do if it was me 😁😁😁
I don't know about severe OCD but the guy has a great deal of energy. He is exceptionally disciplined. You can see a great deal of care and thought he puts in.
Patrick McLaughlin you're right and if you add his discipline to an occasional camo trousers, and the haircut it leads me to the conclusion he's either a vet or the son of a military.
I wandered off to the older videos. Very worthwhile information. Thanks! 👍
May you have a healthy, happy and productive 2021. 🙂
He's doin it!!! He's really doing it!!! Right out of the park!!!!!!
Thanks for watching.
Used same product on my 1992, S10 .
It done a great job . S10s paint looks new again .
Enjoyed watching a non-detailer use the product and get good results. Got a +1 from me!
Thank you
I thought I'd seen all the PF videos. Huge fan. I plan on buffing out my 03 Rodeo's tired paint. It still has clear but is getting oxidized. I've been researching the correct way to do this. THX for the tips.
Thank you very much! Hope this helps.
A couple things you need to know. 1. You should measure depth of shine with a meterstick (10%longer than a yardstick) held perpendicular to the surface. See how far you can read the numbers
and graduations in the reflection. 2. I have never seen anything better than the old Envirotech's Dri Wash 'n Guard. You would need a double-length meterstick. The distribution system went broke several years ago but I think it's still available under the product name. And painters love it cuz it accepts paint extremely well, unlike waxes and silicone.
I detail at a pro level. The whole ultimate line is great stuff.
I stumbled upon this in my recommended videos this morning. Nice work.
Thank you
Wow! Great demo! 🎉very nicely done! 🎉 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much!
Wow that method and materials worked fantastic.
Thank you
I have tried several over the counter rubbing compounds and have had good luck with the meguire's ultimate rubbing compound.
Good video to show what the overall transformation can be. Doing this to a vehicle you care about requires a few more steps. Just for the uninformed. Love the channel.
Thank you for the feedback
Since you watch project farm so much.
RUclips: here I will throw it in your recommended.

Thank you!! Hope you enjoyed the video!
Yep loved every second of it. Thank you for all your hard work.
most satisfying video......
Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Watching this is so satisfying.
Glad to hear!
Oddly this is now in everybody's recommendations
This would be a good product category to test in a future episode!
Thank you!
Nice! As a tip, here's what your readers can do without too much expense.
1. Instead of a wool or microfiber buffing pad, use a foam pad. It cuts much slower and you have less risk of burning the paint. With a clear coat, you can burn a hole thru very easily.
2. Use a DA polisher. Harbor Freight sells one for about $79 or so (get one with the 20-25% coupon). It's actually a pretty good buffer. I have the older red version by Chicago Electric - is that a real company or a HFT company?
3. Buy a bottle of Meguiars M100 and put three pea sized drops on the buffing foam pad. Then spread it on a 2' x 2' portion of the paint, turn the speed to 2 and power up the buffer. As soon as it's spread out, increase the speed to 5 and very slowly, move left to right in a line. Then go down and do the same right to left. Continue for the first pass. I like doing 3-5 passes, depending on the amount of oxidation and scratches I want to remove. If you can make it look good in 3 passes, why take off more paint or clear coat by doing more passes. Keep the pad clean as you're buffing. As soon as you're done, remove the product on the paint with a microfiber cloth. Don't push down, just remove the product. You can use an instant detailer on the microfiber to keep small scratches away.
4. Buy a bottle of Meguiars M205 and do the same as above, but with only 2-3 passes. That'll clean up any haziness from the M100.
5. Follow with a good wax!
Your car will look like new! And you don't have to worry about burning the paint.
Thank you for the feedback
That looks great, and I can't believe the clear coat is gone!
Thank you
CAUTION: Don't go over the edge of the panels like that, you WILL rip the paint off. I understand he's showing you a demonstration but it's just something to keep in mind.
Brian, I agree. Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Thanks for sharing that info. I’ve gone over the edge of the panels on every car I’ve ever polished. I guess I’ve always been lucky. Glad I know this now.
I used to have a 94 Explorer, same paint color and pinstripes. Remembering that my uncle had Ford repaint the vehicle several times when new, I knew there was a ton of fresh paint under the fade. Lemme tell ya, one Saturday with a couple of products, a buffer and some elbow grease brough that thing back to life. People commented on how good it looked lifted and shiny. I was kinda sad to send her to the crusher this summer.
Thanks for sharing.
Cool, i just clearcoated my old snowmobile to get som gloss and shine to it, and it turned out great 👍
Nice work!
I haven’t read through all the comments so I apologize if this is a repeat... I was thinking that maybe you could buff part of the truck by hand to compare with the electric buffer. I polished an old car of mine by hand with Nu Finish many years ago and thought it looked pretty good. For people (like me) who don’t own an electric buffer and/or don’t have an extension cord long enough to reach from their upstairs condo/apartment to the parking lot, it would be nice to see how well it works or if maybe we really should buy the buffer and extension cord. Thanks for doing your videos. I’m a new subscriber and really enjoy everything you do.
Thank you for the video idea!
I love this channel. I just bought a 94 Ford Ranger as a knock around truck. I thought I'd detail it so I popped into the channel and I got the information I needed. Mr. PF, keep up the good work. I have to do the interior next, got any ideas?
I have to get one of those high speed buffers.. thats nice. You have to be careful with them as they can burn the paint..
Great point!
that rubbing compound is awesome. i use it alot on cars i detail
Thank you
damn never expected results like that...
It's amazing what a buffer and rubbing compound can do for an old paint finish! I detailed a 1966 GTO a few years ago and it looked amazing! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
I know I just seen this and I think I’m gonna have to buy a buffer and some compound haha. I’ve always done aluminum and mag but never pait
Even the old videos are good!!
Let's take a loo at the truck today lol. We fans of the channel already know..
But on a serious note would like to see product comparison of the same nature. 4 years is a long time.
we need a Buffer comparison, there are so many cheap ones on amazon and i have no idea which cheap one to buy to do some light sanding and buffing.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Please do a plastic trim restore video and show results after a month. Can’t find a good comparison video on RUclips. Thanks!!
I wish I knew about this when I was younger. I had a 1992 Toyota 4runner with blue paint that looked just like the before. Hot dang
Thank you for the feedback
Too funny seeing this video nothing wrong with a little bit of elbow grease to buff up a paint job. Great to see your videos you're doing a great job
Thanks 👍
Project idea: rate, test and compare car waxes
Great video idea! Thank you
@@ProjectFarm I would absolutely love to see that comparison. You should compare techniques as well as compounds.
@@ProjectFarm Would love to see that actually... Could you also test a cheap European Wax/polish combo also? Its found almost everywhere, I dont know the name now, but it has a yellow lamborghini on it and its a black bottle.
Thank you for all the great content! Ive been watching you since august 2018! Keep up the great Videos!
Not car waxes, but he did do a video on buffing compounds or scratch removers. It was yet another great watch!
Would you be doing a product review on wipe on clear coat any time soon like poppy’s patina? It would be nice
Thanks for the video idea.
Finally !!!!! I was waiting for this thank you Mr project farm👍👍👍
You are welcome!
Excellent video! We have a 2010 Sienna limited awd black that needs buffed out!
I really like the Toyota Sienna. My sister had one and it was very reliable!
i usually wash and dry, clay bar and then do the ziplock bag over hand to feel spots that will need further claying. one more wash and dry and then buff, wax and seal.
This is a great method! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
just curious. does this make the paint thinner? which more prone to damage and you said the car had no more clear coat . and were taking and cutting out bad paint to shine the ones underneath , so this would speed up the process of the paint getting messed up ?
Can you make a video on the best paint polish?
Well Commander, you've done it now. When Little Mama sees the shine it'll have to travel to all other vehicles., by YOU! The McGuires is good stuff, sure. I don't guess if I put enough on my Taco it'd fill up the rust holes. And this was a benign video in that no running engines were demolished. You know how I am.
Lewie, LOL! I really enjoy reading your comments. You have a quick and witty sense of humor. I wish there were more people in this world like you. Thanks for the positive comments!
A lot of people say the one of me is way too many. I just come from a long line of goofy people and working construction all my life hasn't helped anything either. Too many were on work release and the rest needed to be. And you do good and thorough work and I appreciate it. Thanks again, Commander!
That's bloody impressive.
Thank you!
I dig the M81 Woodland pattern camo pants 😂 great video as always!
Thank you for the feedback
I'm really surprised by the results , I was skeptical it would make a difference worth doing but after watching your video I have to say I was totally wrong. Btw Great videos project farm and keep them coming
duckman, Thank you very much for the positive feedback! A buffer along with the right rubbing compound can make a huge difference! Thanks again!
What is that polish you used after the orange bottle?
Shines like a million bucks! I like Nu Finish as well, they claim that 2 applications within 30 days are good for a year and I don't doubt that claim, I do a thorough detail on my car in the Spring and water seems to bead up and roll right off all summer long. This won't last long, though, without clearcoat the polished area will fade back to what it used to look like fairly quickly.
Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
That looks incredible.
Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Just an idea as I hate waxing car, how about auto polish testing - wax vs. wax, paste vs. paste Which one last longer/better shine. Collinite , Turtle wax --- too many out there to mention.
Thank you for the video idea!
Review polishes
New idea for test subject: Car wax bead test. Simply purchase small 304 SS plates from McMaster. Apply car wax brands to plate samples and control has no wax. Run in dishwasher with no detergent. Check for ability to bead distilled water VS. # of cycle washes. Easy test for your skill! Keep up the good testing!
Thank you for the video idea!
So if.i.wash my car i use a compound and then then the polish my car will be nice and shiny till how long? Will handle at least 3 months? Either its a summer or winter? 🙂 thank you 😊 i have a black BMW if that's matter
The best compound I've ever used is called Presta Ultra Cutting Creme and is very expensive but has amazing results. If color actually came off then that car probably never came with clear coat as older cars didn't have this. Which is why you wax your paint as that protects the paint from oxidizing.
Thank you for the feedback
nice video. I plan on buffing my 94 ranger in the future. it has not been washed in 10 years.
I hope it turns out well! Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Would be nice to see your review on orbital polishers.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Have you ever done a test on best metal polish??
Thanks for the video idea.
Didn't you do ammo testing a couple years ago?
Thank you for your impartial and informative videos. Which high speed orbital buffer did you use and is this the one that you recommend?
Have you considered testing ceramic car wax against conventional waxes? What is the "best" way to protect your car finish, in various conditions (salt in the north, sun in the south, etc.) I just tried Groits Ceramic 3-in-1 Wax on my classic 1984 VW Westy and I'm initially very impressed with the results, but not sure how it will hold up. And are there other brands which would perform better than Groits? How do well do the various waxes work on Clear Coat vs. the vehicle you just showed the restoration on?
I've been addicted to your great reviews on Oil and Oil Additives and learned so much from your tests! You have an excellent approach and present extremely well too. Thanks for all the work you do!
Thanks for the video idea.
Awesome job
Thank you!
Yeah as long as you have a layer of clear you can make it somewhat shiney,
But if you’re buffing paint some paint jobs are really thin so you’ll buff into it too deep
Nice job.
Thank you
Have you done a wax once vs twice to see if shine is different ?
very good results
Sony, Thank you! Do you use an automotive buffer? If now, what approach do you take? Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
I used 3M products
I like 3M products a lot!
more money but a good result. thanx
Agree, 3M is worth the extra money!
Going through your vids, havent done the orbital polisher test yet. Found video for sander, but none for that. Wanted your insight before buying one.
Thanks for the suggestion.
Sweet holy molasses!!! 😱
lol. Thank you!
Was there clear coat on the paint at one point? Is it worth adding clear now? I’m deciding what to do with the 27 yo paint on my Chevy van.
Hello, how long did the shine last?
Yeah, stick to oils and stuff! You're good at it!
Thank you for the feedback
Don’t have to be an ass sovL. Where’s your channel?
Time to get to work on my 22 year old truck! Thanks for the vid. Could you name off the buff pad used?
Before you polish, should clean the surface, because it can scratch it
This is great advice. Thank you for commenting!
I agree. Typically a professional detailer would do a wash, then use a clay bar, then use rubbing compound, then polish and was. That said, you probably know most of that, and this was a really awesome quick demonstration and made a huge difference. Did you notice any over cutting on the edges of the hood or fender? Have to be careful with buffer speed.
802 Garage, I agree...I should have made a more thorough video. I did not not notice any cutting edges on the hood or fender. I agree, one has to be very careful. Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
Yeah, still a great video! Huge difference.
forgive me for being dense but did you take off a layer of paint?
looks good buddy
Thanks for watching the video and commenting!
THIS BOY HAVE HANDSWEAT
How has the buffed paint held up?
Was there an update to this? How does that square look after a month? I think we all knew there would be an instant improvement. :-)
Need to compare dual action polishers. I am a big fan of the Chicago Pneumatic Platinum Buffer with variable speed. Much safer to use for the do it yourselfer than a rotary polisher. Big fan of the Meguiars Ultimate Compound, Polish, and Wax using a Big Country backing pad and Hex Logic Buffing Pads. (The backing pad that comes with the HFreight unit is junk).
Thanks for the suggestion.
