P0455 Explained - Large EVAP Leak (Simple Fix)

P0455 means a large leak in your evaporative system. The evaporative emission control (EVAP) system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. The fuel vapors from the fuel tank are absorbed and stored by charcoal pellets in the charcoal canister. The vent control valve is controlled by the engine control module (ECM) and allows air to flow into the charcoal canister to purge the gas vapors into the engine air intake to be burned. The flow of the gas vapors from the charcoal canister to the engine air intake is controlled by a purge valve. The vent control valve is normally opened when the engine is on, and the purge volume control valve is normally closed and is controlled by the ECM to open when it is ready to purge the stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister.
However, the ECM occasionally performs leak tests to ensure the evaporative emission control system is working properly when the vehicle is turned off. During the leak test, the ECM closes the vent control valve to create a sealed EVAP system. If the EVAP system does not maintain the pressure, the ECM recognizes an evaporative emission control leak. In the case of P0455, it is a very large leak. This is usually indicative of a loose, broken, or missing gas cap.

Checked the gas cap and that was it. I had this same problem about 6-7 years ago. took the car to a local dealership, they fixed it and charged me $60.00.. I am so glad I bought this little device..it has already paid for itself....

If a PO455 large evap leak is the diagnosis, would I be able to smell the gasoline fumes in my closed garage when my vehicle is parked in it?
PO455 code is usually not a gas cap although it can be. Mine in a 05 ford expedition is a evap sensor above the gas tank requiring the tank to be dropped. The sensor and wire cost $850 plus labor to drop tank, not such a simple fix. A smoke test will find the culprit or maybe not. Old cars are notorious for evap codes and they can be a bitch to find and fix
When the purging starts it is drawn into the intake manifold not the combustion chamber

Can anyone tell me where the fumes go if there is a gross leak? Or better yet, how are they getting vented to the atmosphere? Trying to understand. If you're driving long distance and you get one of these leaks. Will it vent to the atmosphere for safety purposes?
just put my extra fixd in hubby's truck with check engine light on, got P0455 code... Will let you know if what emission evap leak it is- he did say that he thinks the gas has been going out pretty fast in his truck..

Hi I have a question. I'm having a evap large leak p0455 on my 2007 Hyundai sonata 3.3L v6. I bought a new gas cap and code was still there so I paid for smoke test. They said canister vent valve was faulty and leaking. So I've replaced that and code came back 2 days later. I would think its maybe a line but they said they didn't see any bad hoses and it was only leaking from the vent valve. Any ideas or suggestions?

I just had a misfire happen the other day and I had the code, so I’m going to say yes.
Yes, misfire
The idea is that the computer is assuming the system is sealed and acting properly.
When it opens the Purge valve it's assuming a set amount of fuel vapors will be released into the engine.
If those fuel vapors are not there, the engine misfires under that assumption the fuel mixture was proper.
Assumption was my WORD A DAY CALENDAR word for this morning.

@@williamyoung2930 I don't remember exactly except that it wasn't my gas cap (which is what I was hoping it was). I took it to Sun Auto, and they replaced a hose and I think a valve and maybe some other stuff, and it cost me a lot of money.
Very rarely is it the gas cap.
All fun and games until your gas tank builds mad pressure and you're in a rolling time bomb
I replace the purge valve but to be on the safe side I will have a smoke test done.

Or it's one of the multitude of sensors is malfunctioning, and it's going to cost you a whole hell of a lot of money to find out which of the many system parts is/are malfunctioning. This is one crap generic error message.

Yeah me too lol but it was my fuel pump lock ring was bad so my fuel pump was leaking gas
