Have to listen to a version of this in a more recent game. The last few seconds the background music is turned down and you get an idea how loud they are really singing. It's not really noticeable over the music in this clip. I've been there in person and it's an amazing atmosphere.

The lead singer of INXS tragically died in the same year Port Adelaide played it's first season in the AFL.
The old Port Adelaide of the SANFL and the Port Adelaide of the AFL, the club have a long history.
That is the reason why they have a strong view on their traditional Black and White Prison Bar jumper.

@robreacts the song also has a connection with the history of the club. I will try and summarise. There are multiple leagues in Australia and Port Adelaide started in the SANFL and had ambitions of being in the national league (AFL). The club was accepted into the AFL but was forced to spin of an entirely new club. This never sat well with the club and the supporters and the clubs merged back as one. Hence the song ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ also represents that struggle.

Port have been the team that all the others love to hate in South Australia for 150 years because of their success. Now the clubs in the AFL are envious of this unifying beginning to games. However, some of the clubs get their own back because they have better club songs. Hearing the Richmond fans passion when singing their "Yellow And Black" at the MCG is also awesome. In 2015, INXS members Jon and Tim Farris were invited to the game against Sydney and they were blown away by the presentation. The song didn't work that night though, the Power got belted. I drive 400 km to games (equivalent of London to Manchester) to be part of this. I went to my first Port Adelaide game in 1963, a few months after arriving from Britain as a migrant with my family.

Awesome to see you react to this one, mate. It's a spine-tingling feeling being able to support a club as great as Port Adelaide in this way every time we play at home. Just as you said, it really brings everyone together and I can't imagine how intimidating it would feel to be a visiting side or supporter and have to deal with it haha.
To add another layer to all of this, Port Adelaide also runs out onto the ground with 'Not Giving In' by Rudimental playing, and at twilight/night games will even have some pretty decent firework displays besides them as they leave the race.
They put on a good show and really make it hard not to live and breathe Port Adelaide.

I not a fan of music played during an actual game. Kind of cringe worthy. Enjoy genuine crowd enthusiasm more than stadium mic hype. Before the match is ok. Port picked a good Aussie song that everyone knows and stuck with it for home games. I still enjoy the crowds creating their own unique things which happens less and less now and the stadium voice overs are control freaks in last decade and a bit. Gets annoying more often than not but a lot of fans now that only started going in last decade and a bit, do not know anything different than to be told how to support than be themselves.

The back story to this ritual is that a young talented player for Port Adelaide died as a consequence of misadventure on a end of season trip to Las Vegas. His name was Jon McCarthy. Then a few years later the coach do Port Adelaide was murdered by his own son in a drug fuelled state. Both tragic circumstances that really cut the heart out of the club. So Never Tear Us Apart was played before the opening round of the following season in honour of Jon McCarthy. It was the brainchild of their club president David Koch who is a well known media personality here in Australia. It was initially supposed to be a one of event but as you can tell by the crowds reaction it just stuck and is still as moving and motivating prelude to each game at the Adelaide Oval. I’m not a fan of Port Adelaide at all but I love and admire their dedication to carry on both of their legacies. Great video mate. Glad you see and understand the significance it has.

Other than Port, the only team I can think of with a strong connection to a particular song is West Coast with “Eagle Rock” by “Daddy Cool.” It’s a pretty iconic Aussie song from I think the 70s and crowds love it
Richmond have a Japanese drumming troupe that form a guard of honour beat war drums as the team takes the field at home games, and they throw Eye of the Tiger around a bit but that particular song doesn’t really get much crowd participation
Other than that the only other song based connection I can think of is some players choose a specific song to play around the stadium after they score a goal, and Charlie Cameron from Brisbane is still rocking Baby Shark. He’s known for doing his Harley Davidson mime as a celebration but he also does the chomp chomp thing from baby shark sometimes to match the song
There’s also a few songs that broadcasters have used over intros to games or as interstitials that feel connected to footy. Probably the main one of these is “Holy Grail” by Hunters and Collectors. Great Aussie song that Channel Ten used to play over a montage at the conclusion of their match broadcasts. The songs theme being about a hunt for an elusive magical cup during a military campaign obviously having thematic ties to footy teams chasing the premiership cup.

Ah that was a day to forget my my club! They took that passion and kicked 14 goals to 3 in the first half!
When Richmond fans get to the Yellow and Black cry in they’re song, there’s little that beats that. Very hard to experience that other than being there.
As a rule, we don’t do public singing, sadly, but most clubs had groups of fans who’d sing throughout a match, Fitzroy, Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon in particular. Basically copied all of the UK football songs but added in some of our own too. But Port are the only ones who’ve made it official like this as far as I know.

@@RobReacts1 Good man, once you pick a team, you stick to them and not let the fickle types recruit you. Nothing worse than people that have no loyalty to a club and just fair weather types.

They are the only AFL team that does this, all the rest come out to their club songs, through a banner with various themes on, this is close as you will get to a football song in the AFL, singing and chanting is not a thing, each club has cheer squads. Whlist in the PL you will get at Everton the theme from Z cars, Chelsea Blue is the colour, West Ham Bubbles, Newcastle the Blaydon Races, Citeh Blue Moon and as you mentioned YNWA at Anfield etc Brisbane Lions have a version of the French nation anthem

Boston Red Sox do Sweet Caroline which is awesome! And NY Mets do Piano Man.
There’s a great vid of Billy Joel in the stands singing along at a Mets game with the entire crowd which would be a great reaction vid for you!

The Swans use Sweet Caroline at the SCG for some inexplicable reason. Great song, but not really the right theme. Much as I'm not a fan of Port, they definitely got this part right.

Of course it’s the 2014 elimination final… as a tigers fan this still gives me ptsd (maybe lessened a bit since we got one over on them in last years prelim)
Definitely one of the best songs ever written though. Shame it’s slightly tainted by sport allegiance :P
I’ve actually heard people say certain songs have been legitimately ruined by sport here and there. When richmond won the flag in 2017 and the killers played the half time, and the post match concert and Jack Riewoldt got up with the band to sing Mr Brightside, I know people, mostly Adelaide supporters, who now can’t listen to that song. (Additionally, the Adelaide Crows team went on a ‘mind camp’ after losing that grand final and were made to do workouts while listening to the Richmond theme song on repeat as some kind of ‘we won’t let that happen again’ thing, and it destroyed them as a team and they’ve been rubbish since)

Others have tried but the fans won't engage. I think it was the perfect song at the right time in the clubs history. We unashamedly stole the idea off of European football. Unfortunately we are allowed to do it at home.

Port tend to copy other clubs or steal ideas without crediting the originator. Logo was stolen from a supporters idea on Twitter. Just this month they ripped off an Aboriginal painting for their indigenous guernsey. The main jumper is the South Australian state jumper in teal, black & white. Hopefully they have an original idea one of these days.

    • @chadchadderton
      @chadchadderton 2 года назад

god you’re clueless. even if a fan posted a logo on twitter legally they have no rights to do so because they don’t own the trademark.
not to mention they never “stole” the indigenous design… and we can’t forget the universal design they use on their kit. which wasn’t even originally the states design… but also a design the crows have used in the past. so many tears from a 78 year old man
