Great choice on fabrics April, reminds me of cotton candy colors. Your friend will love this quilt! Lady the older I become, the more I'm all about the KISS method for quilts, meals,, and housekeeping.
O, April I learned about KISS & idiot notes years ago! Idiot notes happen when you have to write reminder notes to yourself; a great lady I worked with taught me about both y e a r s ago! Worked with computers for years & had fantastic backup people to keep our softwear & hardware systems going. Enjoy your videos tremendously!!
I wanted to relearn how to sew. So I thought too make a kiss quilt. Used 9 in blocks to make a queen sized quilt. I stumbled across your channel while trying to learn, your are fantastic and down to earth. Made it easy for me to figure this out, maybe since relearning to sew, a quilt probably shouldn't have been my go to😂😂😂.
I definitely want to see a version where there aren't seams that need to match! I find so much value, and entertainment from your videos, April. Thank you so much. -- Ru😀🤩
Very nice results. Sometimes I take a picture with my cell phone and that helps me See Things I otherwise look over. Nice colors chosen. I’m sure your friend will love.
I've done that with my phone photo app and design wall for years. It's easy to then see where your colors may be clustered, 2 similar blocks together, etc.
Keep it simple silly. I miss the intro with the magic wand where you say I’m April and this is my craft room. The quilt is lovely. The two pinks that are touching each other take from okay to special.
I simply love your personality. Your the tops. This is a pretty quilt, look how fast, & easy it it came out. I'm going to apply your technique to my next quilt. I still am admiring that cool pencil lamp on your desk. Those colors it changes to are cute. Your cat was very content to just sit there in the chair while Mom made the video, with out jumping into the spotlight. lol Chocolate 🍫🍬 mmm.
I always tend to over complicate things too. So I had to laugh when you spent 2/3 of the video talking about how to use a plethora of rulers to cut a 10 1/2" square!! And then you said you tend to look to the left and didn't see the 2 pinks together but the funny thing is that those 2 pinks were on the LEFT to begin with! I recently made the Moda Love Challenge quilt using a layer cake. I have to use my queen size bed as my design wall. I laid out all the blocks and took some photos. Then started sewing rows and dang it if I didn't have a same square next to an HST of the same fabric - not once, but twice!! I unpicked the blocks - thank goodness they were on the edges. But if you've done this, you know it's more complicated than just ripping a couple of seams. I ended up with 2-3 partial rows to sew back together. But it's done and now I can't decide if I want to quilt it myself - I only can do straight line quilting or cough up the money to send it out. Being a single senior, I'm leaning towards doing it myself. I do appreciate a simple block or rectangle pattern though. They're a good palate cleanser!
PINKS I LOVE PINKS! I really like the watercolor looking fabric. I also agree that sometimes you just need a brain break and do something simple. It helps you refocus. Love you and the video. 😘 Johnni
I'm trying to make every day a KISS day!!! lol Nice choice of fabrics. Simple layout quilts speak to me really. They are so classic!! So much to do with them. Intricate quilting or tying them....PS I love the sweat shirt so much.
I made quite a few KISS quilts using 5” squares last year. I just wanted to sit and sew and not think a lot. They turned out pretty cute, but I’m kind of embarrassed to bring them to the long arm persons since they are so simple. Most of the quilts they do are much more complicated. And with a shoulder injury I can’t move a quilt through my domestic machine right now. So they are still waiting. Oh, I plan to make move of these using layer cakes with different simple blocks, but still using the KISS method. Thanks for sharing this. It looks great!
I make quite a few patchwork quilts for donation. I use the squares as leaders and Enders while doing other quilts. I just grab and sew until I have enough rows to make a top.
Love the Bliss fabric, so pretty! I recently made a KISS quilt using 5x8" blocks, making the first block on alternating rows a half block (5x4). No intersections! Always enjoy your videos ❤
Good evening April, Oh how i love that Northcott fabric of the watercolour dispersing like oil on water, it is so beautiful even if it isn't a pattern or an exact design, it is just so pretty. I'm so glad you told us what a KISS quilt is because being a relatively new quilter i've never heard of a Kiss quilt before. I hope that your friend likes it when you take it around to her, but i think this could be a single digit childs quilt or a double, treble digit girls quilt, it is so good for all the ages. I can't have chocolate April, so can i ask that you have my piece, i would hate to see it go to waste. Crafty hugs, Norah, Glenochil, Scotland
You make quilting very fun and happy. I love how gentle you are with your kitty when they are "helping" you. When you held up the Northcott fabric my heart did a little leap! I LOVE it and have been trying to find it. I think you said it was called "Bliss", but Bliss looks like a batik. It was the soft pink fabric. Do you remember where you got it and are you sure that is the name and manufacturer? THANK YOU so much for all the great videos!
Darlene .. I am so sorry I have been crazy with work and trips ... I am still catching up ... I am so glad you found that fabric... Thank you for letting me know cause I would have searched for it. April
I love this idea!!❤ I have 3 fabrics, all flannel, 1 with baby elephant in pastel blue and gray, 2 solids powder blue and gray. My question is.. since I love what you did here I do need a larger block since elephants are large pattern. what seam allowance would you use so I know what size to cut my blocks. This will be for our 1st great grandson due in June. I'm not using batting I'll back with another flannel.
You had such a nice stair step pattern going (with the dark pink squares) on the top right. That would have been nice to continue throughout the quilt.
You want your seams horizontal so there isn’t a build up of the seams on the long arm when it is quilted. If you are going to quilt it on your home machine or a sit down it doesn’t matter. 😀 April

I got one of those big 20 1/2 inch square rulers. It comes in handy sometimes.
OMG YES!!!!
I have been using up my charm packs using this basic pattern. No matter how I lay them out, I always get them out of order I just go with it.
Lol
Thank you
I thought there was a raccoon in the window to the right of April with that striped tail LOL. Great video as always!
Lol. Nope just a kitty
April, i would have taken layer cakes and make a bigger border
Great idea
Good measuring, is that a stripology ruler? I need to get one. It was nice that you let the design be random and a little free form.
No. It is from June Tailor. It is similar to the stripology ruler but not as many markings. 😀
April
Very good. You do like a challenge don’t you. Hehe. Have some extra chocolate for that. Hehe
Challenge accepted. Lol
Fellow IT girly who loves quilting too!!
Yay!
Oh I have a Question. When you have to piece your backing do you make your seams horizontal or vertical? 💕
You want your seams horizontal so there isn’t a build up of the seams on the long arm when it is quilted. If you are going to quilt it on your home machine or a sit down it doesn’t matter. 😀
April

Yes
IKEA in the lighting section
Ii saw a bandana quilt few years ago. Should I starch them or not?
I think it’s a personal choice but I wouldn’t personally
We have the same attitude of it is what it is

KISS with the rulers by lining your fabric up with the grid lines on your cutting mat and just use a regular ruler.
That is definitely another option. Thank you for pointing that out.

Great tip!
Kona cotton fabrics do not have a written selvage edge. They are great cottons, too!
Thx for sharing that 😎
Why did you say in the beginning you couldn’t use 10-1/2 inch layer cakes squares, when you ended up cutting your fabric 10-1/2 inches???
Layer Cake squares are 10 inches. Using precut squares the result will be smaller
Thank you

Simplicity is often underestimated.
That’s what I think too
Make every other row start with a half block and you won't have to match seams.
