I’ve got a similar one - but fully loaded. Whoever bought it first went mad with the spec list. I bought it at 90k miles fourteen years ago. I’ve still got it - and it’s just ticked over 310,000 miles. And nothing has broken on it - its an absolute trooper.
Oh wow sounds a epic car that! Nice one!
hey what about this geartronic, I have got mine 3 weeks ago at 84k miles and no trace of gearbox been serviced. So now I am not sure should I look for someone who can change the fluid or just leave it as it is.. 1 lady owner since new, but she is from London so I guess this car went through a lot of city traffic and less motorway.
What year is yours?
@joedoe1268 2003 so a pre facelift
V70 is a beast. Mine chilling at 620000 km
I bought a same year v70 d5 this year absolutely love it so comfy and can move for a big car. I need to change the wheels tho as they are 225 and rub it’s meant to have 205 so I bought some v70 205 wheels but turned out they were off a mk3 and they have a smaller bore than the mk2 🤦♂️. Did not know this so sold tho and I’m still looking for a new set. Almost all marketplace wheel sellers don’t specify wheel bore so don’t make the same mistake. Looking forward to seeing what happens with this 👍
Have an 02 D5 with the AW box.
Bought it after I sold my A3 8V 1.8 TFSI back in 2019. Was just buying it as a cheap runabout, and me being anti Volvo (as up until then, it was Saab or nothing) but seeing as the 2.2 lump in the 9-5 left me beyond dissapointed I bit the bullet.
Comfortable, best seats I’ve ever had, all blonde leather and retrofitted wood inlays + steering wheel and a modified exhaust so sounds lovely.
40+ MPG without issues, close to 500K km’s and runs like a clock! Love it to bits.
Almost 4 years into ownership, and the biggest repair? An intercooler. Beyond amazed and will keep mine for years.
Will do a full refurb of the exterior as it deserves it. When the exterior and the Titanium trims are fitted it will look perfect.
Done 300.000 v70 D5 done 3 belts never changed a water pump still on same turbo . Love it
I have a P2 V70 2.4 Turbo (petrol). She's just turned 178,000 miles and drives like a brand new car. I've just come back from a family holiday in the Welsh mountains. Such a pleasure to drive on a long run. I'm intrigued to know more about the extra rear lights, as I've considered doing that to mine.
Sounds like you have a great car. I will try and cover the rear lights in a future video if this helps.
Had two 850 diesels years ago, then a V50 which had the PSA engine and blew up! Then got a V70 p2 auto petrol, full history, beautiful car but so so thirsty. Next a C70 P2 181 bhp D5, full history, which I still have at the minute and is an absolute rocket ship. Also now have a V70 p2 163bhp D5 02, again full history, unfortunately didn’t have cruise or heated seats but it had so much money spent at main dealers on clutch, services etc. This beauty undoubtedly saved me after it had been to a garage for the a/c condenser to be changed, as coming home from work at 60mph she launched with no warning off the road and into a field. I seriously thought she was going to flip over as she bounced out of control over the ruts. Thought it was a blow out, but turned out the nut had come off the o/s ball joint leaving me with no steering. Damage- a cut into the plastic under tray and that was it. I’ve replaced all the drop links inner and outer tie rods and ball joints. With reference to you changing the cambelt, I’d never done one ever before, but I changed this one and the P2 engines aren’t that hard to do. These cars are so much more comfy than the C70, but that is a fun car to drive with the roof down and you can feel the chassis flexing when you pop her into a bend.
My first Volvo was an 850 estate. 2.5 20V estate. My second Volvo was a V70 D5. My third Volvo is an XC 90 D5. Although that is a 4 cylinder engine. Now in my opinion the last real Volvo was the 850. Lovely car, loved it.
Less than 6 month ago I bought my first Volvo ever... a P2 V70 D5 2.4D 163 hp from 2006, with 300 000 km at the meter !
It is same colour as yours with the simplistic 'Kinetic' finishing : no fancy option or leather seats, but everything works as expected.
I love the car, its comfort, the space inside, the look especially the back has always been fascinating to me with the big red lights... and the good Volvo wheels 😀 you're absolutely right the wheels on yours do not fit, swap them with original Volvo ones and that will make a big difference + removing this anaesthetic red finishing is a must, should be the first thing to do.
The engine... what to say ? it's a piece of mechanic art IMHO, runs smoothly, powerful, low diesel consumption around 6.5 l/100 km (this is how we count here in France 😁) I expect to drive this car for many years. I opted for this car with the manual gear box... just in case to save some unexpected problem with a not-well serviced automatic one, but that's not an issue as the selector is so smooth and precise that you change gears without noticing it.
I absolutely agree with you, that generation of Volvo wagons are the last of what one can call a 'true Volvo' for it is well conceived up to every detail, simple, spacy, comfortable, efficient, robust etc... This one I bought comes from the Alps where the owner worked in a ski resort, and I can't even see a single spot of rust anywhere !!
Also I found a second hand Volvo 'dog grill' from a Swedish website that fits perfectly into the pre-existing fitting holes at the ceiling and can be lifted if necessary as it's equipped with 2 gas lifters ! this is where you see the attention to details that the Nordic guys had at that time, my 🐕🦺 loves the spacy trunk.
So, definitely love the car ! Long life old Volvos !
Fingers crossed I'm buying one of these tomorrow... 1 owner, 149000 miles, Cambelt changed at 124000...Full service history and Manual 👍.
Will let you know IF I was pipped to the post by another buyer...
Should we worry less

The P2 D5 was a great car. I had a 52 plate that genuinely didnt have any rust. Even the underside and susoension still had shiny paibt. 8t wouod return 50/52 on a runand was pretty bulletproof . I upgraded ? To a P3 and what a shock all the running gear was covered in rust due to Ford cheapskate production. I had Volvos for over 20 years. Woukd i have another ... no not after going bavk tk Jaguar XF sportbrake.
bought a p2 D5 V70 (facelift) last year as a tourer to aid in my camping escapades and have some LOVELY nights camping inside UNREAL mileage, tonnes of space and VERY durable when it came to back roads BUT year an a bit later i've gone 180 and its now 60-70% Stage Zero'ed, BC Racing BR Coilovers, XC90 Calipers + Disks, Partially poly Bushed and is a TANKKK and to this day is one of the best looking estates on the road to date still.
Love the channel, found you from this video but looking forward to more videos on this!!
Thanks 👍
Mine, 2001 V70 D5, just passed 600.000km mark. 🎉 Which is pretty good considering I traded it with gypsies for a Peugeot 206 which I got for free 😅
Volvo had no service history, ABS light on and MOT due in couple of weeks. Managed to negotiate extra 100€ + Volvo in exchange for the Peugeot 😂
ABS light turned out to be a bad fuse connection so it was free to sort out. Took me few weeks to find that pesky fault though. Needed new rear shocks for MOT but that's all the mandatory stuff I had to do.
It's obviously seen better days and if I end up keeping it, I think full set of engine mounts is next on the list.
Anyway, mine came with Opel (Vauxhall) wheels. Tyres were in their late teens so obviously started looking for new ones. I didn't realise it at first, but what the crafty "businessmen" before me had done, was they had sold a nice set of 17" Volvo Thor wheels, probably worth half the value of the car. They had then put on just some wheels that fit... But here's the thing: Volvo and Opel/Vauxhall wheels aren't interchangeable 😮 Yes, they kinda fit but that Volvo V70 has 5x108 lug pattern where as Opel/Vauxhall is 5x110.
It's not the end of the world, Volvo enthusiasts have fitted Saab wheels since early days of automobiles and vice versa. But if you wanna do it right, get proper Volvo wheels and sell those Vauxhall ones...
Carrying on with the budget theme of mine, I managed to find a set of those 17" Volvo Thor wheels for sale less than an hour away for 40€/set because the tyres on them were bad 😅 Normally they sell here for 300-600€, depending on the condition.
Otherwise a very clean looking motor you got there. It'll be an excellent car for years to come! 👌
it's good to find a channel who loves Volvo's, i have had most most and among my favourites were a S40 T4 in yellow, then after looking for a long time a 850R then went German for a few years and other makes in between Volvo's. my last Volvo was a flash green S60R which no one knew i was buying and got it delivered on transporter and as it passed my brothers work (someone else who likes Volvo's and he had a V70 D5 among others ) said to a work mate as a joke i bet that's going to my brothers and that's where it went!
I hope you enjoy the content if you have a look around we have a few playlists, a volvo 940,340 and a Volvo amazon also documenting my friends very rusty Volvo 244DL. It sounds like you have a massive love for the cars to 😎
i did binge all the 340 episodes, like a lot of people it was the estate touring cars in the 90's why people fell in love volvo's, my friend had a same colour as the 340 you had and was like a tank
This is my dream car years ago and it still is... love this!
@Simpson's Classics The best V70 D5 to get is a Euro 3 D5 Manual, The Aisin warner auto's are not good and there is no getting away from it with trans fluid changes, The valve block in the auto box simply wears out. It's for that reason after a bit of gearbox research i drive a 2003 V70 D5 manual, 243K miles on it and it runs flawless. As for wheels, I took the Volvo Thor alloys off as they were scabby and put a set of refurbed Volvo Nebula alloy's on it and they look great! 👍 P.S When you get the timing belt done pay special attention to the front auxiliary drive belt system including the alternator clutch pulley, A common D5 fault is the auxiliary belt failing and being dragged in by the timing belt causing engine failure, Lots of info about this on the internet!!
Hey thanks for that I will make sure to look out for those items 👍
@@SimpsonsClassics Your welcome mate, I hope the V70 serves you well they are great cars 👍That said about the autoboxes they do solder on for a fair while after they start getting shift judder etc if you are gentle with them 👌
Mines a 2003 212bhp Mystic silver (426) 2.5T S80 petrol. I've had it since 2014 and absolutely love it. Unfortunately, she's starting to rust pretty bad around the door bottoms and one of the wings. I bought it because I've always been cursed with rusting cars despite taking care of them, so I initially got the big Swede because you never see a rusty Volvo. . . . Ha ha, there you go.
Dreading looking for another car as this one's like driving around in your living room, and I love scaring the hell out of the occasional Audi or BMW that thinks he's going to take Grandad's Volvo on the inside! I'm thinking about going for a 2011+ D5 S8 or S60 as the Tax on the newer petrols just gone over £700 a year! But I'd much rather keep the old barge to be honest. 😒
MUST HAVE .. the tailgate spoiler .. sets them off a treat.
It does make the car look so much nicer that’s for sure 👍
Nice to see you back in a proper drivers seat.👍👍👍👍.
The D5 appeals to me .
Thanks they are a great car 👍
thats a fine looking beast, and your not wrong that they are comfy on a long run. I've got a 2002 S60 with the 2.0t in it (also minus its backbox) and it just east the miles.
Cheers! Sounds like you have a great example to 👍
Nice one,Marc! Glad you are back in a Volvo again. The smile on your face says it all. I'm not a fan of the wheels or the exhaust if I'm honest but it does sound good 😀
Cheers John. It’s nice to be back in one. No the wheels aren’t for me. But the exhaust definitely has grown on me.
The last real Volvos were the 700 Series, they had a straight motor with rear wheel drive like every Volvo since 1927.
The 850 / V 70 was a complete change with 5 Cylinder traverse Motor and front wheel drive.
"This is not your Uncle Olaf's car".
If you study the development of the 850 you'll see that it is a complete other car compared
to its earlier siblings.
Wow Marc! What a fabulously appointed interior in that beautiful Volvo Estate! (I’m sure that level of luxury in a new car would be £60 k plus now?)
Thank you. Yes I believe the value in todays market would have been something like that for sure. It’s lovely inside 👍
Nice car. I have a 2002 V70 (170k miles) and a 1994 850 (220k miles), both of which I have owned from new / nearly new. Before that I had a 1981 244 in which I covered over 300k miles. These cars will certainly last if looked after,
Thanks! It sounds like you have had and still have some great Volvos to! Cheers for watching 👍
My 04 p2 just turned twenty this year.🎉🎉 She only gots 145k on the clock.. Sucks when you know your Volvo wagon is going to outlive you..😅😅😅
Argh yeah they can definitely crunch some miles that’s for sure. It sounds like you have a low milage one to be fair. Thanks for watching. All the best 👍
My xc90 2.4 d5 has 125000 miles. Done cambelt drive belt all pulleys brand new Bosch alternator. Just replaced the intercooler and what a bloody job that is. But she runs sweet
Looks really tidy. That red though on the trim... I'd probably want to change it. The wheels, why are they vauxhall when it's a volvo 🤷 id probably want to change those as well. I think the first job on the volvo definitely needs a simpsonclassic sticker on the rear qtr glass, 😊.
Thanks it’s really not a bad old thing. Hopefully should do it’s duties well and I can also have a play with it. The red will go in good time once some other bits are sorted.
Yes that’s my take on the wheels. They look good enough but I want some proper Volvo wheels on there, Volvo made so many nice sets so it’s time once the tires are done to swap those out. Definitely stickers in coming 😂
Excellent choice sir. Back in the driving seat.
Thanks buddy I am chuffed with it 👍
I had a Mk1 S60 (post face-lift) diesel. It wasn't the most reliable car I've ever had - I spent way more money on repairs and maintenance on that car than any other I've owned. But I absolutely loved that car, best I've ever had - and I had it longer than any other. I was very sad to see it go when I changed it for a Mk2 post face-lift S60 diesel R Design - which I also love. As I understand it, Volvo aren't stopping making saloon cars and estates. They're just stopping selling them in the UK, apparently they sell far more SUV's here than cars. An utterly perverse decision if you ask me, the cars will become like rocking horse shit on the used market.
I’ve just bought a XC70 SE Sport. D5 awd 2008 with 18,000 miles from new.
She’s still waiting to be named.
I am sure a name will come to you when you get driving it
Yes yes yes! Are they just lovely cars to own?? I know I’ve said it before but welcome back to the family fella! I really like the red accents ya know… here if you need any P2 help or advice. Fab video!
Hey thanks Richie I appreciate that. It’s nice to be back in a Volvo and back in a P2 👍
Looks good! Hopefully, this one won't get 'totaled', too!
I never want to have to go through that again. Cheers 👍
Gotta love a 5 pot! I like the quirks on this particular one, the red interior and dual exhausts definitely spice it up a bit compared to your average V70. The wheels look good from a distance but up close i can agree some proper Volvo wheels would finish it off nicely
Hey thanks yes it definitely a little different and it’s had some great owners who really loved it. So I hope to make my stamp on it and make it my own. Love a 5 pot to aha
@@SimpsonsClassics I wouldn’t mind one myself, the MPG must be great. Even though my 940 is thirsty it’s a great daily. I still need to find some brackets for your old boot roller😅
@@dbt2787 it’s not to bad I am getting mid 40’s which for an auto I think isn’t bad at all. I will keep an eye out for you buddy. 👍
It's a beautiful car Marc! First thing I would have done is give it a wash and then a good wax job since it's a daily driver and out in the weather all the time. I like the mud flaps since they serve a purpose not just bling. Cheers, M
Thanks Midge. Don’t worry as soon as the video was done it’s had a full wash and ceramic wax ready for daily duties. Cheers for watching. Glad you like it 👍
Looks great! Autos might not be the "drivers" option however for the commuting your doing it's perfect. Plus a nice 5 pot
Thanks exactly this. It has a job to do and hopefully it can do it well. If it was a T5 it would need to be a manual
The D5 sounds amazing for a diesel and quite petrol-like to be honest! They look quite menacing when tastefully modified hehe. You have the AW55 transmission like mine, lovely transmission and made by Aisin (Toyota/Lexus) so really good. I need to do the rear light mod too, that’s so cool! There are several styles of headlight and they look like S60 lights so double check first.
Couldn’t agree more they are a great looking car and I can’t believe how modern, yet retro they look. Proper Volvos and I am hoping this one will look nice in good time. I have many plans..
Happy new Volvo! 🎉
That's a beauty Marc, going be a keeper for a long while, I'm not a fan of diesels myself but if I bought a car that size then diesel auto is certainly the way I would go.
Thanks buddy hopefully this can carry out daily duties better. It’s nice to be back in a Volvo, like mentioned the diesel is needed for my commute.
@@SimpsonsClassics Yeah I agree, diesel has its place in big stuff not in poxy Fiat 500's. I'd be the same as you if needed a load lugger over distance.
@@graemew7001 haha yes I know what you mean. If this was a T5 petrol then it would need to be a nice manual box to.
exactly same as mine (02 v70 d5 auto), silver best as stays clean and fresh looking, mods ive done to mine, wood to silver trim, s60r steering wheel, 18" nebula's, egr blank, s60 front door cards, upgraded sound system to the top end 300w version on lux models, factory boot sub, xc90 front brakes, roof rail delete, bluetooth module for hu, p2.5 rear lights. need to get it mapped like my old s60 d5, and fit the geartronic shifter and ecu i have ready to go in. but im thinking or getting a 2006 xc70 luke to replace it. would like a v70r but fuel would make me not want to drive it, plus ive got a fleet of 850's as my weekend cars (850r man est, 850r auto saloon, 850 2.5 10v auto est, and an 850 est t5 auto)
It sounds like you have a lovely example! 👍
I am thinking of trading my V40 to V70. Will watch more of your video. Thanks
They are a great car the P2 v70 👍
looks really good, i know what to look out for in tesco now!
Haha thanks you sure do. Hope your well buddy 👍
Nice find. That's a good looking estate.
Thank you 👍
look forward to having a spin in it
There are OEM mudflaps that you still can buy, it is common to paint them in the cars color (in sweden at least).
Yes I have seen these and I will be after a set I think. 👍
Sounds great for a diesel, look forward to seeing this in person!
Thanks dude do love a 5 pot sound
You could've bought my V70 p2 163, iv never liked the thing even though iv had it since 2016...😂
Don't get me wrong, it pulls like a train and is very reliable, comfy, quiet and reasonably quick for a big heavy car but iv never jelled with it...
Oh man I didn’t know it was for sale. It’s a shame you don’t get on with it.
To be honest it’s worlds apart from my 940 but it’s still very Volvo and nice thing to drive.
Not my favoured sort of content, but I'm pleased for you that you have found a car with which you feel very comfortable. Regards.
Thanks George I appreciate you watching all the same. We will be back on track with the projects in no time.
viimeinen oikea volvo oli 245,745 ,945 vuoteen -98 asti
I'm jealous you found yourself a DIESEL! We never got them stateside :(
Aha really? I would have loved a T5 but fuel in the UK is bloody stupid so this should soak my current milage up nicely.
@@SimpsonsClassics In the states fuel is getting more expensive. What doesn't make sense is why diesel is a full dollar more than gas!!
@@DeanofMachines it’s the same
In the uk the diesel is about the same value more as petrol it’s a joke nothing is cheap anymore
@@SimpsonsClassics i just assume diesel, being less refined, would be cheaper ya know?
@@DeanofMachines you would think so. In the uk it’s all about emissions blah blah. It’s all they care about! Yet electric car manufacturing is ten times worse for the planet! The world has gone mental
Love the V70 Marc. I agree with pretty much all you’re saying although I like the Vectra/Insignia wheels to be honest. Health to drive mate.
Thanks buddy. Glad you like it. I definitely feel back at home with a Volvo. 👍
I love these cars like watching your videos
Cheers thanks Richard 👍
Looks a nice car. I would have to change that red on the inside. I don't like an auto but could live with it My V70 D3 is a 6six speed manual and I love it.
Cheers yes like mentioned I am not a fan of it but got other bits to sort first. It will go back to black. The auto box is lovely for what I need.
check front and rear engine mounts hold vac (use mityvac), they are always knackered.
As mentioned I know about the top engine mount. Cheers
@@SimpsonsClassics top mount is not vacuum, front a rear are and leak over time which then bleeds of vac which is shared by the vnt. visually front
ear and will look fine when they are leaking.
Nice P2 you have got. Optional Premium HU8XX series audio system. that sounds really good. Do the gearbox flush. It will say thank you. Those engines are indestructible if maintained. Agree grill need to be original. :) Maybe 3 spoke steering wheel :) Also you can pick up bluetooth audio coupling so can listen tot he favourite Sinpson tunes. :)
Thank you. Yes the plan is to do a gearbox flush on the car. I want to look after it. The history is so good on the car I want to build on that for sure. The steering wheel I love it’s nice and comfortable.
As for the tunes yes I would love to do something about that. 👍
@@SimpsonsClassicsdo NOT do a flush, please. Just simply drop the oil and refill. It will take about 3 drops to perform a full gearbox oil change. I’ve seen many people regret a gearbox flush, especially on cars of this age. Love your car 👍🏼 I have a 2004 XC70.
Looks like a great car, to my mind, no other car ages as well as a Volvo. I love my Volvo V60 Inscription, just over 2 years old, I’ll make it last as won’t be able to buy another new sadly😢.
Thank you. Yes agreed nothing drives like a Volvo there is something about them. It sounds like you also have a nice example definitely look after it 👍
@@SimpsonsClassics I think I’ll keep this one until the wheels fall off…
Got this in R version and I absolutely love it
Its an ace car I would love an R.
@@SimpsonsClassics 👍
Lovely car well may you wear it mate happy in the Volvo .. and cheaper than Bluetooth gears to run 😂
Haha hopefully! This thing is ten times the car it really is.
Great car , i would get rid of the vauxhall wheels i guess there omega wheels possibly a 32 degree offset may benefit the handling to fit proper Volvo wheels again .I think these will also start to rise in value I would like one of these myself .
Cheers like mentioned this is my 2nd one and do like the P2. Yes the wheels aren’t staying as stated in the video but want to sort other bits first.
I agree I think then will rise in price. Thanks for watching 👍
the red interior is badass
Cheers it’s grown on me to be fair. Looks much better in the flesh.
I really like em , would love one myself but I also like my small car as its easy to park . Can you tell me how different the S60 and S80 from the V70 ?
Glad you like it. The s60 is the saloon version of this car basically slight different front bumper to. The s80 is a big premium Luxury version of the s60 it was designed to compete with things like the bmw 7 series etc. lovely lovely cars usually with a great spec to.
would you recommend the petrol version over the diesel, the diesel dont really exist were im from
If I could afford to run a petrol one in the uk, or could find a good example I would have had a petrol but the diesel does a better mpg. Both cars have their pros and cons to be honest
I'll get the sping compressors out again 😂
Lmao 🤣
The last real volvo is the 900 series.. because still red block and rwd. 😁
If you check my channel out you will know we love the “REAL” Volvos rwd 👍
What would be a reasonable price to pay for one of these? Seen loads around £1500 but not sure if those are bad examples?
£1500 upwards should get a nice one. 2-2.5k seems to be a nice price range for the nicer examples. 👍
@@SimpsonsClassics hopefully don’t increase too much in the next year, lease on work car is up in October next year and considering one of these after but buying instead of leasing. Given your insta a follow too as LOVE Amazons and also had a 1982 mini in the past (first car) so looks like a good channel! 👍🏼
@threequotesthursday5657 hey I hope you find one to. Thanks for giving the channel and instagram a like. I hope you enjoy the content we have plenty of mini and Volvo action going on.
Where ya based as ya in wodnes there I am in Runcorn and have a volvo s60 d5
Did live in Widnes, but I have now moved south. Sounds like you have a great car 👍
really simmilar to fords
just be aware, s60 and v70 headlights are different.
Yes I am aware of this cheers
Naa. The 2010 Volvo V70 and V50 were the best wagons ever made. V70 can be in an accident and the other car totalled and Volvo V70 will remain intact. Watch videos online. They use 3-4 grades of steel. They're some of the best made cars ever built. I have a V50. Next car will very likely be a V70.
