Brilliant manager at Utd, turned an abysmal side into one of the most exciting buccaneering football teams teams ever to come out of Old Trafford. Treated terribly by the club as was his successor Sexton.
Yeah, but Sexton destroyed that Docherty team which was a bad decision. Ray 'The Crab' Wilkins terrible signing. He didn't play that way at Chelsea oddly.
The Doc... in a early interview a reporter said your team doesn’t defend very well and Doc replied “how would you know you’ve only seen us attacking!” The night after we secured promotion back to the first division the Stratford end was electric everybody wanted to stay behind and just keep singing. What an atmosphere he brought to United and Manchester. Cheers Doc!
Thanks for the great childhood memories. I was a proud 8 year old going to school on the Monday after the cup final ... very happy to face a classroom full of scousers. R.i.p Tommy Doc.
He has had a fantastic life. Says it how he sees it, a people's champion and a character. Laugh out loud stuff at the end too. Hard and fair like his roots, and adds colour. Thanks for the download.
I met TD at a Stamford Bridge dinner, I told him I used to have ‘The Doc’ written across the front of my school book, he seemed genuinely quite flattered, he was well-pissed tho! He is a total gent and lovely guy - a football legend 🇬🇧
Tommy Docherty and Bill Shankly both played for Preston North End. Both of them regarded Tom Finney as the greatest British footballer. All 3 of them Legends. Love Tommy.
What a fantastic interview. This man is a legend. End of. He came to united at a very difficult period for the club, not unlike the situation now. He had the long shadow of Sir Matt over him, like David Moyes did last season with Sir Alex. He fixed that by asking the board at a meeting one night'Why is Sir Matts office bigger than mine. I am the manager'. He said at the time that it broke the spell. They swopped offices.he had united on the right track with young exciting fearless players. Coppell and Hill on the wings, Pearson and Greenhoff in the middle and a 4-2-4 in your face that terrorized teams. It never came to fruition as when he got the sack, sexton was installed and it went back to the dour, methodical, predictable, lethargic system English coaches used at that time. He was famous for legendary quotes, the best being 'after Man United, it's all downhill'! Thanks for posting this.
Kirk Brookes Usually there are three sides to every story. In this case, Denis's side, Tommy side and the truth. The holy trinity of Charlton, Law and Best were Manchester United back then. Bobby was the only one who left with any dignity. The 68 side had to be broken up. When the Doc finally did it, it took a year in the second division and putting young talented players in the side to bring them back. Fergie had the same ruthless streak. Whiteside, McGrath, Hughes, Sharpe, Ince to name just a few. Each player might have had a year or two left in the tank, but you are better off breaking in a younger player earlier than having to do it when it is your only option.
The Lawman's side would never have been heard if the Doc hadn't decided to sue Willie Morgan. He remained (publicly) silent till called to giver evidence in 1978. This led to the Doc admitting he'd treated Denis "wrong" under the cross examination that led to the trial's collapse. However, in the interests of fairness, David Meek stated in the 'Manchester United Football Book No. 15' that whole saga wasn't a result of "villainy" by the Doc
I once met the Doc when he was at the Wolves, he shook our hands, and cracked loads of jokes about how bad we were. I think he lasted less than a year and managed 1 or 2 wins, but we probably gave him plenty material for his after dinner speeches. I liked the Doc I’m old enough to remember him at his best and he was a good football man, a top character and a funny man. RIP The Doc you will be missed
Still can't believe United sacked him in 1977! What he would have gone on to achieve we will never know but the exciting football his teams played we will never forget. RIP Tommy
I've always said that we'd have been league champions before 1980 if the Doc had been allowed to continue. Instead, we got Dave Sexton and, with no disrespect to the man, the sparkle had gone from the team.
Tommy to me was a manager who made a load of average players into a winning team at old trafford.great interview Did you ever see George best after he left.I never saw him when he was at old Trafford .Great answer In tommies day they loved to play for their country players thought it a great honour to play for their country . A character of the times not just another boring manager
What a wonderful character, you don’t get managers like him today. I bet that every Man United fan will agree, the team played attacking, flowing and attractive football the whole time Tommy was manager. He certainly revitalised Man United!! You can see the respect he had for Sir Matt Busby! A man’s man and a true football legend. RIP Tommy. Brilliant interview Bryan, I could listen to him all day!
I was there on that cold December day when he took over at United. Full house, Leeds at home, and the Stretford End singing 'we want to see the Doc.' He walked out onto the pitch and waved up at us and that was it. The bond was sealed. We'd taken a 0-5 hammering at Palace the week before but we took Leeds by storm. MacDougall put us ahead but Clarke scored the equalizer with a few minutes left. Highlight of the game was a lad who ran on the pitch, took the ball off Lorimer and had a shot at goal. Her got carted off by the coppers and given a roughing up. I'd love to see footage of that.
Tommy Docherty is a great footballing man. One of the most underrated football managers in the history of the game. Ahead of his time. Would have been a great manager in today’s game.
He was a legend for United played the United way unearthed gems Coppell ,Pearson & Hill and how times have changed,Players and some managers are at it now and still in a job any true United fan would be grateful for his time at United, yes we where relegated but what a season we had record crowds at away grounds, some still stand, good on you Doc.
i remember that wisecrack of having friends in both places as an 18 year old hearing it about a guy who was soon retiring and his life onwards till getting the call , that was his answer too when asked which direction he would go , still makes me laugh years later.
Had the pleasure of seeing him at a gentlemans evening in The Volunteer PH, Barking some time in the 80's. Trevor Brooking bored the pants off us first of all. Tommy followed and had us all wetting ourselves within 30 seconds. Great night.
Say what you like about him, but you can't help but admire his honesty. He's the sort of manager who would have got the best out of me as a player, anyway. Good interview, well done for posting.
Respect pal can't get off this you tube. But if you are a football maniac like me then it's bloody good stuff. Would rather see Chelsea win the league than Man Utd.
51:35 "People say to me 'you might go to Hell', well I've got friends in both places", LOL. I'm a City fan but I always admired Tommy Docherty, one of the greatest characters in British football. RIP Tommy.
Two quotes which I believe are attributed to Tommy Docherty when he was manager at Chelsea are "We started badly and fell away" and "We were lucky to get nil".
great interview, blokes like these are rare in modern football like cloughie or shankley.Dont like what he did with laurie brown`s wife but that apart like this guy a lot even if I'm no lover of man utd but like tommy a funny and great talking bloke.
Such a pity what happened at Old Trafford. Because I really felt The Doc had rebuilt United into a very good, exciting side. I felt the FA Cup was just the start.
Law always said Docherty promised him a new contract but found out instead that Docherty had give him a free transfer from football focus when law was in the pub so someone is lying.
At 43.50 the Doc is talking about players cheating and looking to see if they got the free kick, but there was a famous video of Lou Macari doing the same at United, although I can't remember if Tommy was the manager.
I certainly remember Mickey Thomas winning a free kick against Wolves in the FA Cup quarter final replay at Molineux in 1976 and winking at one of his team mates while he was on the floor. Doc was the manager then.
As a pundit on Piccadilly Radio he used to give United serious grief (it was not constructive criticism) and takes money from any media outlet to slag United off. He then whines about United not giving him free tickets. You sew what you reap Doc
I don't think he got the credit people need to remember he took over a ageing European Cup winning team that needed to be replaced and had not been sacked they would have been the biggest threat to liverpool i think
great memories from Doc's red army. Entertaining, risk taking football. Never quite strong enough to survive a season at the top on the muddy pictures which lasted all winter. Great mistake to sack him and rather pathetic
That team he had to build after the Busby era of Best Charlton Law et al had a great future but because he couldnt keep his snake zipped up out he went & Dave Sexton came in & destroyed that team which sent Utd back five years. If Ron Atkinson had took over after Docherty exit it might have been a different story.
Scots have made great players and managers over the years. In the 1970s Scotland were far superior than England. Take Alex ferguson from Man Utd and see how shite they are now.
Affairs destroy family's the story with George best is he turned up for trading worse for wear been out all night and Tommy said you're not playing Saturday so George never played again.
Great manager and football philosophy... But not the best man manager....was his downfall...went behind backs and called many names? But Mary was lovely and I can't call him for that, just his way of going about things...shame for the club, but glad he is ok and still witty as ever Thanks for those memories Thomas Henderson Docherty
Much maligned figure at Manchester United, but only by the hierarchy there at the time headed by Matt Busby and his favourites. The fans saw what Doc was doing and the seasons 75-76 and 76-77 a real team was forming. They should have paid off Lawrie Brown to go elsewhere. Football matters more than a wronged husband at Man Utd.
RIP Tommy Docherty. You left us with the ultimate question still un-answered :- "What would your Man United team have gone on to achieve if you had not been sacked in 1977" ??? We will never know the answer, but it will always be interesting to speculate........
Tommy Docherty RIP.
His man United team of the mid 1970s played really exciting attacking football. The Doc RIP
Spot on. Beating the scousers in 77 is my favorite young memory. RIP Tommy Doc. The way United treated him afterwards is shameful.

Had the pleasure of seeing him at a gentlemans evening in The Volunteer PH, Barking some time in the 80's. Trevor Brooking bored the pants off us first of all. Tommy followed and had us all wetting ourselves within 30 seconds. Great night.
A great footballer and manager of the like we will never see again.
RIP
Lovely man, came from same part of Glasgow as me, God bless you Tommy !
the doc built the most exciting club side the uk have ever seen, all-out attack, relentless.
Are you speaking of Chelsea in the 60s or Utd in the 70s
he was cracking on Piccadilly radio.with stanage. about 1988.
A real football man. Love hear him talk.
Brilliant, have had the pleasure to meet Tom on a couple of occasions, he never changes.
Bryan Cooney, thank you Sir for posting, great interview from the straight talking"Doc"!!!
Great Interview wasn't a fan of The Doc before watching this but. what a Man Truly Honest
43 years later they're still together. Can't help who you fall in love with.
Love Tommy Docherty what a manager.
1977 cup final he was the manager awesome team loves United ever since .
love the Doc..mcfc
I could listen to him all day long
God rest TOMMY a true football man.
United should never have sacked him...
Top man. Absolutely love him.
I think he was 85 during this interview. Razor sharp.
Denis Law has publicly admitted that he was dossing on the treatment table before he left United ("Let's say I was past my best").
What a great interview
Fantastic Documentary
Such a pity what happened at Old Trafford. Because I really felt The Doc had rebuilt United into a very good, exciting side. I felt the FA Cup was just the start.
I remember those days great man
I met The Doc at a soiree. Funny guy. R.I.P.
Law always said Docherty promised him a new contract but found out instead that Docherty had give him a free transfer from football focus when law was in the pub so someone is lying.
George best had won it all so young he could have done so much more at Manchester United
Bestie and The Doc double act - this could have been legendary
His healthy contempt for knighthoods... a stark contrast with the great Labour man "Sralex" Ferguson.
Thank you Mr Docherty,,.....what a funny man...character! RIP
RIP Tom great bloke
What a marvelous man
At 43.50 the Doc is talking about players cheating and looking to see if they got the free kick, but there was a famous video of Lou Macari doing the same at United, although I can't remember if Tommy was the manager.
There is footage of Merlin diving in the area v Ajax in 1976.
I certainly remember Mickey Thomas winning a free kick against Wolves in the FA Cup quarter final replay at Molineux in 1976 and winking at one of his team mates while he was on the floor. Doc was the manager then.
Dave Sexton signed Mickey Thomas from Wrexham in ‘78 to replace Gordon Hill much to the charging of United supporters. Doc was not ever his manager.
That's Mickey T under Sexton
Could the interviewer not spoke more on his moment of glory on the cup win about two seconds then onto the affair with Mary
He was did his best and realised we are all flawed
Tommy Docherty, a Chelsea Football Club legend ...
R.i..P the doc. Celtic man🇮🇪⚽⚽⚽⚽
As a pundit on Piccadilly Radio he used to give United serious grief (it was not constructive criticism) and takes money from any media outlet to slag United off. He then whines about United not giving him free tickets. You sew what you reap Doc
Sew? You're knit picking there, mate. 🙂
RIP DOC.
Loved bye me in my UTD 1st YEARS OF SUPPORTING THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE WORLD.TOMMY,TOMMY,TOMMY,TOMMY,DOCHERTY.
I don't think he got the credit people need to remember he took over a ageing European Cup winning team that needed to be replaced and had not been sacked they would have been the biggest threat to liverpool i think
I watched a few of his teams..wonderflu attacking style.
great memories from Doc's red army. Entertaining, risk taking football. Never quite strong enough to survive a season at the top on the muddy pictures which lasted all winter. Great mistake to sack him and rather pathetic
Legend
That team he had to build after the Busby era of Best Charlton Law et al had a great future but because he couldnt keep his snake zipped up out he went & Dave Sexton came in & destroyed that team which sent Utd back five years. If Ron Atkinson had took over after Docherty exit it might have been a different story.
One slight inaccuracy - he didn't start at Derby at the beginning of the 1977-78 season. Colin Murphy was manager for the first (I think) 5 matches.
RIP Tommy
Scots have made great players and managers over the years. In the 1970s Scotland were far superior than England. Take Alex ferguson from Man Utd and see how shite they are now.
the doc . went for youth. worked
Kirk how true
The Elton John gag 😀
Affairs destroy family's the story with George best is he turned up for trading worse for wear been out all night and Tommy said you're not playing Saturday so George never played again.
ther you go !! 25 caps ,25 shirts !! respect tommy
what a good man I know him but I wish knew him more that interview was real and truthful frank and funny God bless tommy from a big fan
53:17 "Why do we not mind our own business?" ... the Doc's politics were cool too.
Bestie on a £135 a week! It shows that even top players didn't get paid well, even with the maximum wage got rid off.
Funny guy RIP x
Delray,beach,palm,beach,post
Great manager and football philosophy...
But not the best man manager....was his downfall...went behind backs and called many names? But Mary was lovely and I can't call him for that, just his way of going about things...shame for the club, but glad he is ok and still witty as ever
Thanks for those memories Thomas Henderson Docherty
my second name is docherty
and we wonder why our great club has become a joke ! its all here on video
Almost ruined Aston Villa
Probably one of the worst United managers
😂lie down and have a rest
@@HandleGF right after i bone your mom
RIP Tommy Docherty. You left us with the ultimate question still un-answered :- "What would your Man United team have gone on to achieve if you had not been sacked in 1977" ???
We will never know the answer, but it will always be interesting to speculate........
Never should have got the sack
@@stephenwalker8299 Very true. We will never know what the Tommy Docherty team would have gone on to win and to achieve.
