    Trena, at this point, I'm convinced that you could be given a bag of broken pieces and a couple pictures of the original, and you'd have no problem putting it all back together as good as new, if not better. Such an amazing talent. Each video is a learning lesson. Thank you for the video.

    I stumbled upon your channel by accident and I have to say how lucky for me. I have done minor wood work and refinishing over the years and loved it. My female friends think I’m crazy but it’s their loss for not understanding the pleasure of restoring a piece of furniture to it’s former glory. I have to also say what a delight it is to see a woman working in this field. Your Dad did a great job teaching you because your workmanship is amazing! I’ll be watching for more and looking at your past videos.

Well enough to have her brag about my work every time her friends and guests comment on it. Now, with this new challenge, I'm going to handle the task of rebuilding and restoring the secretary she just bought at yet another estate sale, and yes it's also an 1800's piece! I do wonder the many hours that you need to spend to bring a piece back to life must sometimes make the job very expensive to the owner of it compared to it's value. I guess you must have a discussion prior to decide if the cost is worth it.

    Stunning piece, amazing restoration workmanship, WOW. “Learning EVERYTHING he knows” (@ 5:20) not many kids can say that. Maybe you can explain your drill choices, you use a spade for the dowels where I would expect you to use a brad-point. What are those culls you use that wrap around the curved corners? Any thoughts on those vacuum bag veneer clamps? Do you feel they are more or less overkill for the type of work you do? In my opinion the leg attachments are a poor design. Despite your insightful repairs the legs still don’t stand a chance if someone drags the piece over the carpet. They do look elegant. Says a lot about your skill that you have clients that willing give you such challenging work. Seems to me you spend as much time hiding your work as you do doing the work. Thanks for the video, fascinating.

    • @johnsfurniturerepair
      @johnsfurniturerepair  2 года назад +6

      thanks, the spade bit was sharper than my brad point bit at the time, lol that was the only reason. i didnt want a wandering hole. i used bendy ply for curved veneer repairs. veneer bags can be useful, but i think they overcomplicate the process when a good hammered job with hide glue is more than sufficient with way less mess and setup. cheers!

    While repairing the drawer you start to talk about “proper repairs” and the extra cost involved vs. a DIY job. That’s exactly one of the reasons why I started my own channel too. It seems like a huge chunk of my job is explaining to people why it costs more than a few hundred dollars to do a full restoration of their 12 piece antique dining set. But…thats ok, its just part of the gig I guess.

    How truly beautiful. I love older well made furniture and you have proven you can do an amazing job on what at first looks like a total wreck and ready for the burn pile, and turn it back into a grand classic piece. You have a wonderful eye for seeing through the years of damage and after many hours of hard work and loving care are able to bring back to life that truly beautiful classic piece of furniture. After watching the reveal the other night about your moving back to family, I'm excited to see how you lay out your new shop.
