How do you do that. I have been listening to sports castes of every imaginable sport for over 60 years. Only once or twice have I heard anyone who could interest you past the first 4 or 5 positions. Yet you have been able to consistantly bring the thrill of the competition in every position front to back, day after day and not only that but project very well into the future! I am just in awe of your work, I fear you will not get to sail as much in the near future. ...bobbie branch, Warren, Michigan USA
Could you explain how Issabelle Yoschke is allowed to use her engine? I thought they were sealed to prevent use except in an emergency. Thanks so much for the great coverage!
Finally, we get to hear from Boris! He went through a terrible Christmas and feel for him. May the rest of his race be easier for him with good speeds. The video out of Clarisse's yacht is absolutely terrifying yet it seems like just another day for her while she muses... Looks like Pip arrived in beautiful Melbourne safe and sound escorted by some wonderful people and dolphins!!
Question for Florian: What needs to be replaced on the boats after the race, outside of things that are actually broken? I.e. what is designed to only last the one race and that's it. The sails have looked a little worn on some boats. I'm sure some of the running rigging needs a refresh. What else?
Florian, great coverage and technical analysis each day - thank you! Pip mentioned she qualified to participate in the Vendee Globe. How does a skipper/team qualify?
Why are the last boats so slow? Even in what seem to be good conditions: around 20 knots downwind, their average is just a little over 10 knots over 24 hours. Are their boats not planing (planeren in Dutch)? It is just a little bit faster than a 12 m family yacht.
They aren't foiling or planing; they're standard displacement yachts. They're still much lighter and carry more sail area than cruising yachts that don't even have daggerboards. Performance-wise, they are far apart. Another thing that's not measurable is the way these skippers sail their boats. Some are far more competitive than others and will push their boats to the absolute limits. This will result in higher performance but there are risks involved.
I think the skippers of the last boats are partly not so experienced, so sailing more conservative, the boats are older, perhaps their budget is smaller so they don´t have the newest equipment. But the boats are all racing boats, made for gliding, able to reach speeds of over 20 knts. I would not call them standard displacement boats, they have a totally different shape. And you don´t reach 10 knts average with a 12 m Family yacht in the southern ocean. Look at the GGR or OGR speeds, 8 knts average are very much for those boats
Its tougher on the body sitting at home in wintry Europe? Hot showers, cold beers, flu-spreaders everywhere? Florian may need some salt water and tropic sun?
What provisions do these brave skippers provide to prevent going overboard, and to help if unfortunately they should lose their grip and be expelled into the ocean?

I've pretty much watched all of your Vendeeglobe reports, you are not actually eating the rancid bottle of Black Jack that has been sitting there for two months?! It could explain how you are feeling :)
What a relief it must be to cross Cape Horn after having sailed around the entire Southern Ocean: crazy! Keep going 💪
Look after yourself Florian. Thank you for all your work. Your commentary, analysis, summary and predictions are the best.

Jean Le Cam's Clack Clack Clack is brilliant way to mark transition points in the visual audio track so they are easy to find when you're editing.
Feel better Florian-take care of yourself! Thanks for all you do!

No no for battery charging it's OK.
The prop is sealed, they use the engines for power on board
Q. So electricity can be produced by diesel generator, not just manual or natural(wind, sun, hydro)?
Feel better!
Hope your feeling better your doing a great job love the videos ❤️
Thank you

Done ❤
Just like you said very early on. Escaping to or losing out to a weather system can be dramatic to race position.
yup

Gezondheid Florian, zelf ben ik aan honey and garlic
how come the exclusion zone right after cape horn is so abrupt and high up into central Argentina?
Antarctic Peninsula. High iceberg formation region.

A requesón… I will be grateful if whenever you mention a skipper you add his standing (position) in the race, thanks a lot…!!!
