Nine Inch Nails: a young man contemplating everything that went wrong in his life Johnny Cash: a tired man reflecting on his life, telling his story as he nears the end of the line
Johnny Cash is a great, story teller , we must consider that he is pulling from his a emotional memory to convey how he feels. Just like he wrote about being stuck in Folsom Prison based on mostly an imagined experience. And that's what made him one of the best musicians and storytellers of all time, however I think it's pretty ironic that he didn't actually write the song, hurt. However he makes the story his very own. It's this ability that made him so Awesome, Hurt is probably how he felt at this juncture in his life, because he had lost June, but I hope that The Man In,Black didn't feel, regret!

Except he didn’t ask for it... Johnny Cash was asked multiple times to do a cover for this song but refused every time... until Waylon died and Cash started to slip into his massive depression and started to let go his grip on his own life

@@imperialwarhawk123abc5 You say specifically because you've no better response on the internet than to assume someone is edgy. Sometimes a swear works. sometimes a swear doesn't. The Cash version is an example of when it doesn't. Though... Your generation, I assume Gen X or Baby Boomer, grew up thinking that swearing was wrong while saying "Jesus Christ!" the bible never banned language; just the usage of the name of our lord. Maybe you would do best to remember that saying "Jesus Christ" on the telly was around far longer than flushing a toilet. God never said you couldn't publicly announce you relieved yourself, just that you couldn't say his name in vein.
Am I the only one who much prefers this version over Johnny Cash's cover? His cover is great and all, but this song really resonates with me on a different level.
I love them both. I hear you about this one. It hits me in a different way. It's intense. This one, he appears to be talking about killing himself ... Johnny Cash appears to be talking about being close to the end of his life. So, they are almost two different songs entirely.
I agree. Nine got deep where you just feel his disappointment with himself. Cash felt what Trent was portraying and related. The original will always be a tad better
So a lot of people are complaining about the sound quality of this video, but that effect is there on purpose. The point is to make it sound like found footage.
Jacob Steinberg even the album version has that noise. There's a version of Hurt that's titled Hurt (Quiet) and it doesn't have that sound in the background.
Even if it was made in 2009, which it was in the 90's, that wouldn't mean it had that noise. They had proper equipment that made a clean recording back then you know.
@@peepee8054 I got Bluetooth as well its rare but some RUclips videos are just screwy on them. Just like on the ps4 I've had a video that loaded fine but after 2:01 second it suddenly lost sound then if I didn't leave the video it would crash. It’s interesting to me how when a musician truly resonates with the words of a song, they can tell such a different story through the same lyrics. Obviously Cash’s version was much more tired sounding. Like a man was ready to be done. Whereas the original 9 inch nails version sounds like a distressed young man having some existential crisis. Usually covers are just bland imitations, sometimes with a little spin. But Cash actually felt something deep while singing. So much so that he was able to tell his OWN story with someone else’s words. Idk, that’s just really amazing to me.
saruni lin Well said. It says a lot about the difference between fact and truth. Like how facts (while real) can be distorted to fit a certain agenda, but truth is the realities of life that can manifest themselves through artistic formats like literature and music. So even though he didn’t write it, it’s still Cash’s song (or anyone’s for that matter) because he lived the truth being illustrated here. The way I see it, Nine Inch Nails is so great of a band that they were able to write a Johnny Cash song for him.
If you listen to the rest of this album, you'll find that this song is one of two things. The protagonist's last thoughts before killing himself, or the aftermath of an attempted suicide in which the protagonist reflects on everything that happened. Essentially, it's a song, almost an album as a whole, about a man's addiction to heroin and his slow descent into madness and depression, ending with him either killing himself or flat out going insane.
I'm of the "attempted suicide, failed and is lamenting what got him here", Hesitation Marks being a direct sequel involving the character being older and wiser, but still a bit fucked in the noggin.
Halsten the comma before and after the “I know” implies that everyone left him on their own. while cashes, with out the commas, it implies that his friends died of old age. (Edit, spelling and punctuation)
+havin dinna Im sorry, did I offend you some how? Fucking 10 year olds on this site thinking that they are badasses when they call someone else a pussy. Grow past 12, then talk to me.
I miss my dad so much He’s not dead but I don’t know where he is. He burned his house down a few months ago after he had a mental breakdown and tried to commit suicide along with that. I miss him so much! He may have been not the best dad in the world but the time I was in made him good. At my moms house I had to become an adult basically and do lots of chores and take care of the other siblings. My dads was the opposite, I had no real chores or responsibilities their and could do whatever I wanted all day. I remember watching movies with him late night and laughing while being father and son. I remember playing games while there, relaxing and having the childhood I liked. Being able to escape from the early days of my stepbrothers being here when it was hell. He would do anything for me, he would let me watch a movie or use the tv if wanted to even though he was using it at the moment. I would do almost anything to see him again and just be the way it was. The house I took my first steps in is now ashes inside with a destroyed 2nd floor. When he burned it down he came to my moms and tried to kill himself in the back yard with a big knife. My stepdad found him early morning and called the police saving his life. He went to a psych ward for a bit and was let out later with a restraining order against us. It’s been over 180 days since I saw my dad. If your reading this somehow dad, I love you, and I hope to see you soon someday-your son.
There are positives to both artists takes on the song. On one hand, NiN's gives a bit more of an emotional performance. On the other, Johnny Cash's has that "old man reflecting on his life" quality that he pulled off perfectly. Both are good.
Rozar Demolin It's the "agreeable theory". When people see a comment the agree with, and it has more than one positive reaction (in this case, a "like"), the feel obligated to add theirs to the count. RUclips makes it easier because the thumbs down feature doesn't work anymore.
As soon as I heard the song, I audibly gasped because I was not fucking ready for this shit, man. Fuck TV and its cliffhanging bullshit, man, my heart's not strong enough to handle this.
Light Scavenger there's been a lot of garbage comments on this video but yours takes the proverbial cake. I hate you for not taking the 2 and a half seconds to type into the search bar, "johnny cash hurt" so you could confirm your own insinuating response.
Rick: “hey, I was gonna hop over to the gloppydrop system, get some ice cream” Morty: “you you want me to come with? Don’t you need my brainwaves for camouflage or something?” Rick: “I’ll be ok. Bye Morty”. Morty: “Rick, your not leaving, right?” Rick: “yeah I am, to get ice cream” Morty: “so, you’re coming back?” Rick: “Morty, if you go to where there’s a bunch of ice cream, and then you don’t come back, you haven’t actually gotten ice cream. You’ve just gone to where ice cream is.” Morty: “Rick, I can handle it if you go, but you’ll break mom’s heart and I won’t forgive you for that” Rick: “where’s the van Morty?” Morty: “it’s over the horizon, in the driveway” *Rick leaves* *Hurt by Nine Inch Nails starts playing*
I love both versions of this song. They both tell different stories in my perspective. The nine inch nails original I feel like tells the story of someone who’s made mistakes and the people around him who he loves has been affected by them and he feels sorrow. This version has helped me a lot when I’ve felt like I’ve let people down. Johnny cash’s cover is like hearing the story of an older man who has seen everything good and bad, any time I hear that one I think of the people I look up to and respect, and I respect Johnny cash for making his cover, and Trent Reznor for making the song. Thank you for being the voices we needed to relate to
@@jaxmorris6865 no not necessarily they both have their own charm to them. I like them both for different reasons you feel? You can't compare 4 quarters to a dollar
Bird Person: Do you know what Wubba Lubba Dub Dub means? Morty: It's just one of Rick's catchphrases. Bird Person: No. It means "I am in great pain. Please help me." Me: ... Umm Rick? Are you ok?
Yes, the Rick and Morty scene was great. Yes, Johnny Cash sung his message with this song. Yes, your grandfathers might have gone to get Ice cream for an eternity. But can't we all just agree that we all should shut up at some point.
Sounds like he's talking about heroin addiction he has no empire it's all been spent on shit that only last for the moment yet can't erase what you caused with addiction no matter how high you get you burn every bridge with the ones that loved you but in the end he'd still be him to keep anyone else from going through what he is that's my take on it
I think hes talking about relapsing, because in the beginning he says... "I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel. He tries to kill it all away. But he remembers everything.
My spin on this song is that he is not only describing existential and psychological pain, but doing so by self harming (cutting for example) and hurting himself to see if he can still feel. This is exactly what my self harming patients tell me. They cut or mutilate themselves to stop the psychological pain by using a very real physical pain to remind themselves that they “are still right here.”
@Christopher Naulta I never took it like that but as a recovering addict I definitely can see that. The heroin says to him u could have it all my empire of dirt and then later talks about how it will make him hurt. And then even after he may have overcome and changed it still calls to him and is waiting for him to come back. Idk if that is what it's about but it works for many situations which to me makes great music because u can apply it to u and what's going on in ur own life even if that's not what the song was actually about.
I always see debates as to which is superior to another but I think both versions are awesome. The original NIN version gives a feeling of someone on a suicidal course and fits the theme of the whole Downward Spiral perfectly as a closer to the album. On the other hand, Cash's version is more of an old man lamenting over his whole life knowing most of it is over and just looking at past mistakes and what he could have done differently. Even the arrangements musically are both set up perfectly akin to these mindsets. The NIN version has discordant and out of tune sounding guitars to give a feeling angst and despair and the changes and problems you go through when you are at the age Reznor was when he wrote that song, while Johnny's version features clean, in-tune acoustic guitar with his sullen vocals carrying the weight of the song. Both are masterpieces in their own regard, in my opinion.
+Kristina Savic I honestly have the worst feeling that they are going to just move onto ANOTHER RICK (cuz there is like infinite ricks) and later on we find out the back story of our own rick from the perspective of this new rick. Seriously if they do that it would be the worst but it's like the the only non-totally-stupid way to resolve this.
+trollonater insert cool last name here Actually no they could break rick out by him doing it himself (i mean hes a genius and is now sealed in a room filled with the most dangerous people in the galaxy most of which are probably his friends) However the massive changes to the series would mean a commitment to serialization of the show that hasn't been seen before i mena think about it you cna watch most of them in any order and it still makes somewhat sense.
@@Jalushun I can't tell if your a troll or are serious. Obviously calling you edgy struck a nerve.
@@Jalushun they complimented the song and added that they like both versions. You're the asshole here. Stfu and leave.

The original def resonates better I like em both the the original is just too perfect

So a lot of people are complaining about the sound quality of this video, but that effect is there on purpose. The point is to make it sound like found footage.
or maybe cause it was made in 2009
Fortuitous no it was intentional
Jacob Steinberg even the album version has that noise. There's a version of Hurt that's titled Hurt (Quiet) and it doesn't have that sound in the background.
It was made in 1994. :P
Even if it was made in 2009, which it was in the 90's, that wouldn't mean it had that noise. They had proper equipment that made a clean recording back then you know.
Is it my frigging headphones dieing or is everyone's left ear really screwy at the beginning
Distortion is the intention -- 90's sound efx
Bruh same I thought I was loosing connection lol (I'm using Bluetooth headphones)
@@peepee8054 I got Bluetooth as well its rare but some RUclips videos are just screwy on them.
Very well put!!
Jonney Cash did a lot of amazing covers. I agree with the OP completely
That was really good.
Beautifully worded
If you listen to the rest of this album, you'll find that this song is one of two things. The protagonist's last thoughts before killing himself, or the aftermath of an attempted suicide in which the protagonist reflects on everything that happened. Essentially, it's a song, almost an album as a whole, about a man's addiction to heroin and his slow descent into madness and depression, ending with him either killing himself or flat out going insane.
No. It’s more than just heroine
That sounds like the basic theme of Pink Floyd "The Wall"
I'm of the "attempted suicide, failed and is lamenting what got him here", Hesitation Marks being a direct sequel involving the character being older and wiser, but still a bit fucked in the noggin.
I think it’s an aftermath of attempted suicide, cause The Fragile is supposedly a sequel to The Downward Spiral
@Sam When I was a teenager, Pink Floyd The Wall (movie) put me in a depression and NIN The Downward Spiral kept me there for a while.
Trent Reznor: Everyone I know goes away in the end
Johnny Cash: Everyone, I know, goes away in the end
Wow now i get it, that was well done
Yep yep
Halsten the comma before and after the “I know” implies that everyone left him on their own. while cashes, with out the commas, it implies that his friends died of old age.

I miss my dad so much
He’s not dead but I don’t know where he is.
I hope things get better for your dad and you
the best of luck to you
Your mom is doing the real parenting here. I hope your dad steps up and becomes a father.

There are positives to both artists takes on the song. On one hand, NiN's gives a bit more of an emotional performance. On the other, Johnny Cash's has that "old man reflecting on his life" quality that he pulled off perfectly.
Both are good.
In fact, if the sources I've seen are accurate, NiN's singer said he liked Johnny's version compared to his own.
Rozar Demolin yeah cause how arrogant would it be if he said he thought his version is better

I don’t even listen too Rock I have a month and 2 days clean n I definitely feel like he talkin bout Heroin
its exactly what it is was talking about heroin addiction.
You could have it all, my empire of dirt
'Fuck Earth. You do know our planet's name means dirt, right?'
That ending...... The Feels.
