Just amaaaazing. I discovered her after watching the film August Rush. I thought the soundtrack was Michael Hedges inspired and had to find out who the guitar player was. So glad I found her. But I was upset after finding out she was playing in South Africa, where I am, a month before I discovered her. Hope she performs Here again. Saw an awesome RUclips video of her performing with our local muso, Guy Buttery.
It´s just beyond how anyone could actually say anything negative about this artista and performance. She is a natural and has found her own incredibly unique sound world.I can´t say how much I loved this performance in words !!! You are just fantastic Kaki ! All the best to you ! All my respect , marc
Wow! I love her sound! I experiment with different tunings myself because it does add a special element to a standard 6 string guitar sound (because of octaves) but she has invented a sound and technique that seems to connect with the resonant aether of the universe. The song at 15:12 is amazing. Forget the Calgon! Wear headphones, turn down the lights, light a scented candle and slip into a hot bubble bath while her music carries you to a distant happy place. Pure bliss.
Moon_River how many times to people need to be reminded that music is subjective? there's plenty of melody here just not what you might be used to from the sound of it. her technique doesn't suck either that's absurd.
very interesting nad unique way of playing guitar! some fun tunings it seems like. I am classical guitarist and love her playing, its so very authentic and has a story, thank you Kaki!
Just a reminder, it is perfectly acceptable to say something is not your cup of tea. It is another thing entirely to try to justify your dislike of an artist's style by saying they have "no talent". That's just asinine. Also, every one of the borderline idiots here saying "It's just chords" and "She has bad/no technique", pay attention to the song from 3:50 to 7:00, which is called "Streetlight in the Egg", for reference. She is playing individual strings for the majority of the song, using proper fret fingering, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and plucking, all while using the palm of her right hand as a sort of bass drum on the body of the guitar throughout the entire song. I fucking DARE you to give that a shot, it's one of the most difficult techniques to master, and it's one that SHE FUCKING INVENTED! She's an innovator of new guitar techniques and styles, that's why she's playing at a TED conference (for the second time, by the way). It's really embarrassing to read so many comments from so many ignorant and arrogant faux musicians.
She's regarded as one of the top ten female guitarists ever, eighth on the list between Joni Mitchell (seventh), and Mother Maybelle Carter (ninth), according to a youtube video called Top Ten Female Guitarists. The list is subjective, but it brought me here to listen to her splendid sounds.
@@brianripley3924 I saw that list too, and there should never be a "female" caveat on there. That list was a bunch of greats, but Kaki is new and young enough I hadn't come across her yet, so I'm at least glad of it for that.
Beautiful music. I love your energy and openness to share this with the world as you do. It's a beautiful and vulnerable place to be. And is an inspiration for all of us- (for me anyway!!!) Also, thank you Kaki for acknowledging the problem of carbon footprint. That helps all of us think about it, and wrestle with what we need to do ourselves. We can't wait for the government (especially now!)
I don't know where all the vitriolic critique in the commentary is coming from here... I'm impressed by her performance on many levels (perhaps her oratory enunciation is not among them) but her musicality is beyond reproach... her compositions are subtle and complex, non-obvious & sophisticated, nuanced, redolent arrangements. They push and tumble and skitter with a brooding vitality that I somehow suspect is drawn from the same deep tenebrous well as her wryly understated sense of humor. Plus she has a waaaay cooler name than any y'all. So suck it till dawn you whinging, pusillanimous haters.
Weird how most of the negativity in the comments is being posted by Mystery Users with no profile pic or recent activity. Are we being Cat-Phisted here?
Indeed, the only negative thing I can say about this video is that the sound engineering is not up to scratch. The performance is amazing as always with Kaki.
She is an amazing artist. I also like a singer called alyssa bonagura. I got to know them both by a documentary called art of listening many years ago.
I love what this woman does. I wish I could hire her to sit beside me and play guitar at me. Especially when I'm feeling stressed. My only criticism here is the terrible mixing, but that is the fault of the sound engineer, not her.
ffs - beauty is in the ear of the beholder. What the hell is everyone getting so worked up about hating on this woman? Either like it or not, but if you don't then no need to tell people that do like her that they're 'wrong' or 'idiots' or whatever. If you think (for instance - though its just an example that no one uses) "oooh you should instead listen to Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists, perhaps Asturias" then just say "hey, if you like this then you may like Robert Fripp who I think is 'better'". Maybe you'll enrich someone's life. But hating on this person enriches no one.
I like Kaki King, Michael Kelsey, and Tommy Emmanuel. But, I like Kaki and Michael because they write and write and play original music. Tommy is great too. He is the master of other people’s’ stuff.
You got it Kaki. Talent, power, soul and ordum ex extremis. I am musician too. some say I am best in all the world. I am also 240 lbs of muscle and challenge. guess who says rude things to me? No damn body. I hate how beings want to yip-yap and say rude things about you. I love ya. If you ever need a brother I am there. Peace, Love and Good Happiness stuff!
***** It's both good and bad, I think. For some reason, the human brain seems to remember the negative more than positive, but if you counted them, I think you'd find supportive comments generally outnumber trolling comments.
She is a very talented young artist. The sound tech mixing this is a typical New Joisey tone deaf putz. Absolutely NO ambiance on the mix or stage to make a player (especially a soloist) comfortable. 95% of the NJ knob twisters shouldn't be allowed to work a Bar Mitzvah for free much less a concert. Their concept of sound is too loud and louder. Check Kaki's live vid of her playing "Goby" to see what a pro mixes like. There should be licenses for audio engineers.
I came here from the Goby video, and I immediately realised that the sound would be absolut shit. On the other hand, Untidy Desk is pretty hard to top with regards to live sound. Their recording of Lianne La Havas is the best session video I've ever seen, and I watch a lot of those.
When you say "young artist", remember that Kaki is 35. :) That's still young compared to alot of musicians, just saying, she's not a teenager or anything like that.
Wait... shes using a Vo-96 on a Classical guitar?!?! So that means it does indeed work on Nylon strings, right?! That's awesome!!! Those definitely sound like nylon strings, so unless they have a metal core or wrapping or something I have no idea how that device works in terms of using magnets to vibrate the strings. I guess I'll just take it as it is... TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
Look at the second guitar she plays... Definitely set up like a classical guitar with nylon strings. Steel string guitars dont have headstocks like that guitar with natural finish and with the fancy resonating technology thing... I know what a steel stringed ovation looks like, but the second guitar she plays, at 10:00 lookss and sounds like a classical guitar.
No, it doesn't. Classical guitars are smaller. That huge dreadnought-body style is only found on modern guitars. Also, she said that the device on the guitar uses *magnetic fields* to change the way the strings vibrate. Magnetic fields means steel strings. Nylon is not magnetic. It has a headstock and tuners in that older style like classical guitars do, but that's it.
hi, im 18 years old, i have 11 years along playing (since i was 7 years old) and i feel like i dont know anything about it. although a lot of people tell me im good.
I'm going to look it up, but just in case, where can I purchase one of these "synth" guitars? Don't tell me about ways I can use pedals & what not. Seriously. I thinks she's great, though. Beautiful guitars & songs.
Yes very very true, mostly jealous people without any skills and knowledge, true critics are those who admire art and are half poets when it comes to describing certain art. I am creating too, so I know very well....

People are just being honest.
her compositions are out of this world..
Wow! I love her sound! +Ric Hansen Better than Prozac in my opinion.
Ricci Hansen AND I WANT THAT THING!
Thx to the performer for bein alive!
I'll grow a couple extra plants in the garden next spring to pay back a little for this cool time watching.
: D
kaki king is a greaaaaatte musician, very thankful she exists.
What a gorgeous set of guitars, and gorgeous music as well of course
Amazing skill and a well earned place on the New Guitar Gods but above all she comes over as such an amazing, sweet and beautiful soul.
what a lovely human being.
That magnetic synth thingy just gives your guitar a speechless beauty to the sound 🔊🎸😍🎸🕪
valenius the kat I have to find that dude that made it for her. That is probably the best tool for making beauty I’ve ever heard
Glad she's still around!! First heard her music in that movie August Rush.
Dig the M Hedges stuff. Best damn guitarist who ever lived.
Well,... Tony MacAlpine as well.
you people are nuts. she is literally incredible. i'd like to see your videos.
Sammy Cannillo idrolov
Knowing how to play a guitar is one thing. Knowing how to write and compose on a guitar is another. She's a real prodigy.
Moon_River This is art. There is no right or wrong in art. Art is so subjective. Never start a debate on art. It only make you look egoistic.
you aren't born knowing how to compose guitar your have to practice anyone can do it.
Moon_River how many times to people need to be reminded that music is subjective? there's plenty of melody here just not what you might be used to from the sound of it. her technique doesn't suck either that's absurd.

The Fire Eater... Epic! love that dissonance... .a true virtuoso
What an amazing musician! Love the last song a lot!
Greatest selection of chords and progression I've ever heard.
Lol you like your own comment? Lmao what a joke.
I love her sound.

the last song was amazing! i didn't even blink....awesome!!!
Amazing technology and playing! She seems quite humble and down to earth, as well.
Got to be top 5

I very much enjoyed this performance! Thanks you for sharing, Son.
I was just listening to Fix You once again. You and Amy really need to make more music together! You make a good team.
Indeed, the only negative thing I can say about this video is that the sound engineering is not up to scratch. The performance is amazing as always with Kaki.
That paragraph is almost as beautiful as the performance.
You cannot teach this. What an Amazing artist, musician and songwriter.
I feel foolish for having never heard of her.
+MyworstEnemy mate there's so much music in the world, you can never hear it all
Harry
Ikr? Just started listening to Queens of the Stone Age. Amazing band. There's not enough time to listen to it all I guess?
Check out Other Lives, another amazing band.
This woman would be a perfect rythm guitarist for a death metal band.
I thought I watched every video of her, then I found this. Dreaming of Revenge is still my favorite album. Super talented.
She is an amazing artist. I also like a singer called alyssa bonagura. I got to know them both by a documentary called art of listening many years ago.
Kaki is so great.
I love what this woman does. I wish I could hire her to sit beside me and play guitar at me. Especially when I'm feeling stressed.

Discovered her a week or so ago . . . sounds like the next Leo Kotkie;
Lovin' the Twelve string 3/4 guitar!!
She's a total badass!
Alot of tension, each progression is rarely left completely resolved.
Amazing.
Funny how many people commenting negatively don't have any idea what they are talking about when they're criticizing technique.

She plays multiple guitars... which one?
Incredible
sounds good!
So nice!!
Perfect
love it!!
Awesome !!
Incredible good.
Your the best
brilliant
That PA and lights and HVAC were all like solar powered right??? Say this out loud with upspeak
I dont think her playing lacks depth either. Frankly, she's amazing.
I'm falling in love ........ keep going you wonderful woman.
Does anyone know what this set list is?
hi, im 18 years old, i have 11 years along playing (since i was 7 years old) and i feel like i dont know anything about it. although a
lot of people tell me im good.
I use the same guitar stands as her. Wish I had more in common with her though...
She is amazing how did she learn if it was a RUclips channel please link it to me LOL
Twenty years ago I put my guitar into Nashville tuning and I know zero about different tunings
Superb musician
I'm going to look it up, but just in case, where can I purchase one of these "synth" guitars?

Super inspiring!
My queen :)
Anyone got a songlist?
Simple but spicy the beauty is there. Bold but sharp as a knife.
For all of you saying that the mixing was bad; there is no mixing, its one track. thats just what her guitar sounds like.

I believe someone used my computer when I wasn't logged out as I have no clue as to what you are talking about nor do I know anything about music!
i like her.
very nice!
Guitar GOD.
Does anyone know the name of the first song or even what tuning its in??
Found it, its called kelvinator kelvinator and its in DADFAD for anyone else trying to learn it :)
Lamar s. hmmm you cant whistle Beethoven's Pastorale, in the street or anywhere.
what's the song at the beginning?im kinda curious :3
Does anyone know what she was using on the guitar to make that sound, the "self aware" one, I would really appreciate it
what is that second song she played on her first guitar called?
I was so ready for the fingernails on her right hand to break
Whats the name of the red mandolin/guitar?!?
the angel of reflectoin is equal to the angel of incident
If she breaks a nail she'll have to cancel the whole tour
hi/// from london.
what that thing she is using on the 2nd guitar ???
What's the name of the first composition Kaki is playing?
What is the name of first song?
How do I help?
So Talented !!!!
What model ?
