  • 80% of our calorie intake comes from just twelve plant species, 50% of our calories come from just the three big grasses; wheat, maize and rice. What would happen were we to lose one of these crops?
    This video discusses why wild crop relatives are so important for our future food security, and how Kew and the Millennium Seed Bank are helping to safeguard them.

    Brilliant film, really informative and a lovely way of getting the info across. Excellent to be working on wild crop relatives to back up current crop breeding.

    Looks like they're mostly talking about gathering resources for *conventional* plant breeding here. This is a technology that's thousands of years old. Not exactly edible weeds, but certainly not 'frankenfood'!
