Lox is filet of brined salmon, and salmon is "lachs" in German and "lax" in Swedish so the word most likely comes from there to yiddish
Indeed, though I believe the original grandfather of the word is the old Germanic or Norse word "laks" (forgive me for not using the correct letters, not sure how it's spelled in the old language).

and they definitley should have given them halva for the dessert
oh and matzo is a tribute to what Jews on the exodus had to eat with limited acess to food, it's not necessairly meant to taste good

matzo is great with cream cheese or chocolate (Nutella) lmao or peanut butter and jelly. Literally you can put almost anything on it. Eggs, chicken, lettuce, tuna, burger, the list goes on.
Or you can make a toffee-type snack with it. Cook sugar and butter together, pour it over the matzo on a cookie sheet, bake it, then melt chocolate chips on the top.
You do put apple sauce and sour cream on latkes just not together

I live in Israel and umm there arent really "Jewish foods".. like there are but it's not that like that... it's more, we all come from soooooo many different countries, like I'm personally Portuguese, Spanish, Moroccan and Iraqi(these are my roots) we are all great mixes so we have all kinds of food really...there isn't like something specific, never ate any of the things they are there btw... besides the matzah

Hi, I'm Jewish and live in Israel, and it seems like there are many differences between the food that you've had and what we have here in Israel. I found it very interesting, so if you are also interested here is some information:
1. Matzo in Hebrew is called "Matsa" and kids here love eating it with Nutella.
2. matzo ball is usually much smaller, is called "kneydalah" and has nothing to do with matzo... if made right it is delicious, and you eat it with soup.
3. Latkes is called "leviva", and is usually made from sweet potatoes. I've never seen the apple sauce that you ate, it's usually eaten as is or with the sour cream.
4. borscht is also called "hamitsa". the main ingredient is actually beet, and it is rarely eaten with cabbage. many people here dislike it, but some love it.
5. The lox bagel isn't a traditional food, and I've never seen anyone eating it here. Bagel is usually eaten with cheese only, and some people like eating seasoned raw salmon but it has nothing to with bagel.
6. Kugel, also called "Kiggel" looks different here. The pasta isn't mashed and you can see it clearly, sometimes layered and sometimes clumped up. Many people like it, but rarely eat it.
7. You haven't eaten some of the best traditional sweets! Try Sufganiya for Hanuka and Hamantash (here called "Haman's ear") for Purim. They are delicious.
8. There are two kind of people in Israel: People who despise Gifilte fish (most of us do, including me) and people that love it. Personally I can only think of about 3 People that I know that find it edible.
So what do you think? To me the differences are very interesting, especially when most of them make the difference between this food being disgusting and it being super tasty.
I was also born in 1997 but I watched all the old cartoons lily's talking about. I also think that I just watched those shows because my dad is old school.

I'm not even jewish, but i love matzo. I used to eat it all the time as a child, you can also it eat with cream cheese and tomato, that's probably my favourite aside from just by itself
Locks is smoked fish so it's smoked salmon for the purpose for all of Jewish food is condensed and aged for long lasting ability so you'll see a lot of smoke things a lot of condense thing of the lottos compact famous to avoid for duration of refrgerration needed... Many people put raw onions like red like raw Red onions which are incredibly bitter, And then keepers and tomato slices and the base is plain cream cheese that's been whipped...if you like sushi it's alot easyer
