Up until the first world war, textiles were continually the selling point of a garment for the most part. However, the war ravaged materials and left us withe more utilitarian textiles which affected everyone, but most notably the top designers who no longer had access to the materials they once had. Theres a lovely story about Karl Lagerfeld joinging Patou and seeing all of their fully archived textiles from just before the war started, something that Balmain didn't have and few though to preserve. The textiles even from a few years before simply didn't exist any more.
Since then, theres been a slow decline in the quality of fabrics as garment manufacturers realise that as long as a product has desirability, they textile isn't the most important factor for consumers any more. Obviously the second world war took a massive hit to quality for most, including Balenciaga who famously had the best fabrics then because of his relationship with the Spanish textile factories considering he was spanish himself.
What you mostly discuss in this video is kind of the third tank of textile production, which in my opinion has been the worse one. The plastic based materials that were once used for their properties (think early Paco Rabanne) or for innovation (think elastane) no longer are used to make the product more exciting, but to make them cheaper and/or make them purposefully lesser quality to encourage repurchasing.
Its really awful what we have come to be sold in textiles, even on the designer end, its just not luxury anymore. But literally those fabrics no longer exist and the knowledge of how to make those textiles is held by very few now, so I dont think theres any going back to Charles James textiles honestly, but I hope somebody tries to do it one day

Love this take. Let’s address not just the poor material but also lazy design too! Brand assets, graphics, inspo etc… Taking too much inspiration or literally just blatantly un creative bootlegs. I blame the streetwear market for this but it’s everywhere.

There's vintage and then there's vintage. I wore a leisure suit to my grandparents' 50th anniversary party. All my uncles wore them too. We knew they sucked. But that was the style at the time...
I'm not impressed by vintage now, but I get a kick out of the kids being all into it.
Wool though. That is the magic fabric. For outdoors especially. Though I love the gorp core stuff.

the fact that people accept wearing high fashion designer stuff made of cheap materials is a tell tale sign of how marketing works, just tell them is for tech specs, or that is eco friendly or that it won't hurt sheeps and keep your price tag intact,
if pieces fall apart just blame it on the user's care for the clothing aftersale (fun fact, sheeps don't get hurt when sheared at least if done by someone who knows)

I almost think poly blends/poly has become LESS popular than it used to be in like the 50s and 60s, at least for certain items. It’s totally a cost cutter for sweaters but I feel like I really don’t see too many button ups, or like non-performance jackets that use it. Only like reaaaallly fast fashion stuff.

@@nolimitjibaa3103 Stop supporting big corporations and large fashion houses. Start buying from smaller sellers or brands, find local shops and online dealers you can trust. Of course you have to sift through which are guilty of these same things mentioned in this video. Really just wear what you like at the end of the day. Don’t feel like you have to spend BREAD on a wardrobe. It isn’t that serious at the end of the day.

It's a little bit of a copout to say go second-hand but if you're not just hopping onto trends for specific pieces there's still finds out there, especially if you're not directly trying to look like a Fashion Dude as portrayed on the internet. I've found some solid made in USA denim on ebay (in the us) for like 25 bucks, for example. I would maybe think about what you mean by affordable clothes, since honestly I feel like that phrase is so loaded these days, what with how the entry level cost of clothing being unsustainably low. Ultimately it's spend a bit more money on individual pieces and have less pieces, if possible going out there and feeling fabrics and stuff. And maybe look at affordability at like a 2-3 year window.

Stop caring about the clothes and start caring about what they represent. Find something in your life that actually means something other than objects and cloth. Fashion brands want your money and for the most part do not give half a fuck about any "story telling" or quality. Look around and really ask yourself why certain trends are trending. Karsten be rocking the same shit every other insta guy is wearing.

I regret watching this video. Complete waste of my time. A weird mix of bad and redundant takes. Most people know polyester is worse than cotton. Your takes lack nuance and use blanket statements. Your take on polyester alone lacks nuance. Arc’teryx isn’t the only brand that leveraged the benefit of polyester.
