Understanding Raf Simons Riot Riot Riot

- My analysis of Raf Simons FW 2001 collection Riot Riot Riot.
Notes from post production:
While I did not mention all the patches in the video, I did look and identify them all. I cut a lot out to keep this video at the 20 minute mark. Notable ones cut include Japan, Bauhaus, and a quite good proto-punk band whose name unfortunately will get me censored on RUclips.
Also fun fact the Joy Division patch is for a concert in 1984. Joy Division ended in 1980 so it is a bootleg poster.

Sick Analysis, learned a lot. Would really appreciate you to continue doing this series. Keep it up, Karsten :D
Cactus raf sent me
Ewwwwww
@@Guwaposteven lmaoo
fun fact, Most of the bones used in the movie Texas chainsaw were all real and so was the chainsaw itself, also the scene where the old man cuts the girls finger and drinks her blood was done using no visual or practical effects.
@KW her finger wasn't completely cut off but the actress did have her finger sliced
holy shit which year of the saga
who would have thought rich kids trying to re capture authenticity would kill fashion, music and art?
Rip kenzo?
Kill?
fr
Relax
Man really put stone in focus as the background music
Your best video yet IMO. I've been wanting to do a video on Raf for a while
will you consider making a video on Undercover '98 or Number (N) AW '03? or any japenese brands like Kenzo (RIP)?
honestly impressed by the research and how well spoken this was. hope ur proud of this cause its really well done.
Awesome video and great insights. You had me googling a ton of stuff and broadening my musical horizons for sure
Really appreciated this, never thought of how much went into that collection. Also loved the faint "stone in focus" by the end of the video.
this was amazing, full of inspiration. glad i found your channel.
One of the greatest video i ever seen, great work !
I love this series. Both your analyses and camera presence keep improving :)
Great great great content man, I'm just dipping my toes into fashion and your videos are so full of interesting research and pleasant to watch. I hope you'll keep up with this series
Wow underrated channel. The analysis is great and not enough content like this out there for fashion.
Thank you very much for the explanation. I like your "understanding series", please, keep doing them
I love these videos and I've used loads of them to gather information for a notebook about fashion, as an aspiring designer I find it really helpful, thank you
i watch RUclips every day and i haven't seen a so well made video in a long time, and great reaserch work btw
"Woe to those.." ss 2002 was the 9/11 collection by just bad timing. It was released after the events of 9/11 but was shown prior to the event. Unfortunately it gets the correlation to 9/11 because of the headpieces the models are wearing. Closer and Waves would've been possible "response" collections to 9/11 if we are following traditional fashion runway show schedules, but the theme of those two collections don't really have any connection to 9/11.

my favorite video on YT, good job G!
qwow karsten this video is amazing. your progress on video education is amazing. keep it up!

Wake up babe, new Karsten video
Thanks for this video, man. As a big fan of these bands this is super interesting.
This was a really interesting video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Well made too
Great job buddy, this video teachs a lot about Raf simons and his transition. Thanks
This video is really interesting imo. Please make more of these videos!! With other collections on like number nine or undercover or raf 05!!
Really interesting video, thanks for doing the research bro I now see this collection in a new light
Very articulate and informative, great video
Good video karsten, thank you
Let’s goooo new video
Thanks. Your review of Raf Simon's "Riot, Riot, Riot! Collection is very much appreciated.
I
Your comment about the fact that, when an artist's work is "ahead if it's time" it can be discouraging to the artist" rings true.
I can personally identify with your take on this phenomenon.
When I was an aspiring art student in college I couldn't find an audience for my creative work but I found that when I channeled my creativity into an advertising career I could make a living.
I suffered for years because of the guilt that I felt prostituting my creativity to commercialism.
The dilemma of art vs commerce is as old as time but I've found a way to satisfy my creative urges in a more satisfying way.
I create art for my own collection and give pieces to friends and random strangers who appreciate what I"ve created.
i loved this video. U did. so much research. thank u for this:)
yay new karmsten vid
Great analysis karsten
You seem very passionate which makes the video great
incredible video!!
I was hoping you'd create a video on Raf Simons. Great work.
Really interesting video Karsten
kartsten never disappoints
actually, theres a scene near the end of the og texas chainsaw massacre where the lead actress was actually harmed. i dont think it was intentional on the director’s part, but it happened and it definitely added to the controversy of the movie!
im sure raf was aware of this, hence why the inclusion of the patch on some of the pieces. if anyones curious, its the dinner scene near the end.
Own a sweater from this collection, super great to finally learn more about it :)
we've needed this
came up on my recommended at 3am... excellent video!
i know im late, but wow this is an incredibly well made video
Ikr
this video was so good!
bro continue doing ur thing it's so cool.
Holy shit the riot bomber is now even more badass now knowing the meaning behind all of the patches
I just did an informative speech for my college COMM101 class last week on Raf and Riot Riot Riot was a main point in it. I wish I could have went into depths this deep but my audience would’ve been so confused haha
Need more videos like this 👍
Beautiful video man
Great video and even better choice of music!
That moment when karstem
Great research and work - Monte Cazazza is an important if somewhat obscure figure.
Raf's approach to popular culture and subculture is deep and can be approached at many levels. You throw up some strong ideas here. The move from west to east is interesting and bears out with this collection, but i'm trying to think it across to later subsequent collections.
Also, you are correct in that these struggled to sell. I was selling this collection and the next four, at the time, and it was hard to move it. If only we'd have known what we now know i'd have mothballed Virginia Creeper, Consumed, etc - we had boxes of it marked down to next to nothing......
One last (dumb) question - the reverse of the invites were printed with either 'Richey' or 'Ashley' - the first is obvious, but i'm wondering at the second... maybe Ashley Bickerton, a favourite artist of de Potter, and to the fore in 'Consumed'....?
Great video! Please do more runway show analysis 🙏🏻
First time seeing your channel. This video was very inofrmative adn interesting. Thank you
Very good hopefully you make more analysis videos
Raf simmons a drainer confirmed?
Karsten Talks like he doesn’t put periods at the end of his sentences
uhm
So?
Very off topic but love the background music, makes it really enjoyable to watch
Great vid!!
So basically it was a manifestation through fashion, of the slump he was in leading up to the drop. It wasn't subtle in the slightest about this fact, and it became an iconic part of his history that effectively revived his passion allowing him to move on and eventually reach the point he's at today.
I think the reason he attached the shinning reference would be how Stanley Kubrick (the director of the film) mostly made his actors repeat takes in scenes to bring out true expression throughout the actors of the film, Kubrick mostly made Shelley Duvall repeat takes for her scenes to bring out true emotion
Marilyn Burns (playing Sally Hardesty texas chainsaw massacre 1974)
actually had her hand cut at the dinner scene due to a lack of production resources that did not allow the scene to be realized with practical effects.
The production of the film was a nightmare
amazing video
congrats on 10k
Loved this man, good job. Also whats the background track, sounds beautiful.
aphex twin - stone in focus
Thank you! It’s stones in focus by Aphex Twin
I have the piece @6:29 and @7:56 I also have other patched pieces as well. I found it interesting also that Peter De Potter was the one who designed the patches for the Riot Riot Riot collection I had also confirmed this with him since he answers his DMs for questions.
Ur the karsten runquest of fashion 🙏🙏
Great video Karsten. I think could be interesting is thinking about how the east-european post-soviet silhouettes and the patches interact. I think its interesting that clothes that could well be read to represent the fall of Soviet Communist utopic political ideals (as you identified in using military surp. inspired clothing) are adorned with patches containing imagery of artists in mental and physical decline. I think its interesting that while decline for the Soviet Socialist project represented, for many people, the failure of their utopic visions, the "decline" of these artists lead to the creation of some of their most significant artistic achievements, that sacrificing their own health and wellbeing enabled the creation of artistic successes. When you think about it this way, there are a great deal of interesting contrasts; (failed) utopian ideals vs. (artistically successful) nihilistic art (which sits interestingly with the title "Riot Riot Riot" - how each is a different approach to rebellion), political action on a societal stage vs. political action of the individual through art. I think this all plays into your analysis of how the collection really touches on Raf's conception of the role of the designer. Anyway, sorry for the small essay, would be interested to see what people think.
I remember somewhere Raf said that the patches sewn on to military surplus garments where eastern european youths way of wearing band tees to show their love of the different musical artists and bands Like David Bowie and Joy Division
Great video, wouldn't mind a video over his Closer collection but even better would be his other collections he did at other brands as a creative director such as Jil Sander, Dior, and even Calvin Klein.
love the aphex twin in the background
awesome video! :)
Loved the detail you went into...also how insane would it be to walk in a store and cop ANY Raf piece for $50 😂
I bought a may the circle be unbroken piece for 50€ in a boutique in antwerp few months ago :)
analysis 10/10
Well explained!
Great content! Really detailed analysis!
Maybe we can have those inspirations/ artist in the description column too!
Anyway, fashion I think too that it should tell a story/ POV than only focus on sales.
When we blame/ crazy about fast fashion, maybe should we think what does fashion mean to us too. A statement of your believe, idea or just simply saying you are trendy and rich?
Learned Many new things cool vid :)
Ur the GOAT keep it up
Yo, I just realized this dude was on Cut. The rating people's attractiveness video
Nice Vid! Keep it up.
love the stone in focus
Finally 🙏
Lovin the Aphex Twin music in the background!!
one of the best collections ever made
Great video bro but you forgot to mention some patches like there is one Black Flag concert flyer with Raymond Pettibon's art with revolver being melted with a cigarette I think Pettibon also was struggling with mental health issues. And there is another patch Suicide who were a musical duo with Alan Vega their pioneering music utilized minimalist electronic instrumentation, including synthesizers and primitive drum machines, and their early performances were confrontational and often ended in violence.
Plus there was another patch for the movie Death Race 2000 (1975) starring Sylvester Stallone which was set in a dystopian future, and was about a cross country automobile race that requires contestants to run down innocent pedestrians to gain points that are tallied based on each kill's brutality
Holy shit this is an amazing video
This is daaamn good
i know its not as seminal but id be sooo thankful if you could do a vid like this about history of my world / poltergeist set in particular
Damn, didn’t expect to hear Daughters!
Great talk 😎
You are gonna be real big in 2-3 years keep working hard mate and pushing quality videos.✌️
love the aphex twin tune
We need someone do scan all the RAF SIMONS patches from the Riot Riot Riot Collection!
please do a video on understanding Karstem Kroegw
best collection ever
Just wanted to leave a quick moment to say Texas chainsaw massacre did had numerous accidents and the recording is said to had been unbearable, so it think the bones and guts being the ultimate sacrifice for art was somewhat correct i think its also a more about lengths people go to get their art done even if it hurts not the artist behind but the people associated, just like the kid actors from Christiane F. Or the viewers at Monte Cazazza shows
