It's our job to coach that person and pray for them, or they will keep quoting out of context and think they are the best Christians ever. We need to teach them to stop looking for religion and start looking for the truth.

Sheamus likes to beat on his opponents a bit and expects them to do the same to him in return. I've seen him come back from a match with his chest looking like hamburger meat on more than one occasion. The man wants to be tough, not soft.
Spot on, Melissa. I was fortunate to grow up in family and church and attend a college that emphasized Biblical literacy. One scripture so misused in our present culture is "God is love." Then, it is assumed that love is love to cover sexual orientations. People want to forget that God is also many other things...holy and vengeful. Keep the GOOD NEWS coming, Melissa.

I've said this a MILLION TIMES, context is EVERYTHING!!!! 😊 It's simply amazing how we do this, cherry pick and then apply. As I began studying the Bible by "Book", looking at the who wrote it, when it was written, who it was written too, it changed everything for me. I saw very quickly how much scripture was actually used out of context. Having it IN CONTEXT has made God's Word even more precious too me. Now if I'm honest or if we're all honest, we can do this to some degree or have in the past. Loved the "recipe book" illustration, SO GOOD!
The context of God's pacifying conquest is indeed chills-worthy! Although I'm not confident that the "Be still" command is to God's enemies in this passage like Melissa suggested- it seems like this whole rest of the psalm is addressed specifically to God's people. Plus, the command to be still closely mirrors an exhortation in Exodus 14:13-14 for God's people to take courage and in silence trust in God to deliver them from the oncoming march of Pharoah's army. This was right before God absolutely demolished said army in the sea.
Ps 46 is very comforting. God is in control & there will be justice. It's along the lines especially of the end of Job where God declares who he is and his sovereignty. You may be misunderstanding what Christians are saying when they like the verses - other people have different backgrounds than you and may see the passages in a different light. From my past I really crave justice & I need to see that God is in control. I need to see his bigness. I need that safety. Even if his justice is against me I need it & it is good. (In Jesus I am saved from condemnation.)
Thank you for posting this. I have explained that the command to not judge does not mean that we should not judge, but that we judge rightly as you explained. However, I have found that Christians I've explained this truth to, continue to disagree.
People "disagree" not because they don't understand, but because they don't WANT to believe b/c they don't want to be judged b/c it's an afront to sin (most likely). But the word of God is convicting and maybe it pierces deep enough that the person comes to repentance.
I suggest it also carries the meaning that if you are going to judge -- as you should -- be prepared to be judged. So first take the beam out of your own eye, repent of your own sins, restore those you've wronged. In short, judge yourself so you are qualified to judge another. There are even echoes of this in Paul's directive regarding the Lord's Supper. One is to examine himself first, lest he sins by not discerning the Lord's body and eats and drinks judgement on himself (1Cor 11).

Although the Bible has many verses that are only a part of the total & intended message ... if under an authoritative interpreter. There is no reason one cannot use it for inspiration & bring one closer to God! Not neccesarily referring only to the mug, but for this video in general.

I have "Be Still and Know," hanging in my living room, but in its context, it's even more humbling and powerful. I hope you'll do more of these. One of my pet peeves is the way both culture and even some religions mutilate Galatians 5:4. So frustrating. Also, I'm so sad for those who have lost loved ones, but no matter how much these people were loved, they do not become angels. Never. Ever. And they don't gain their wings.

Exactly I did a 6o second short on Jeremiah 29:11 The people that the Lord gave the promise to would die before the promise, manifest, and most of their children would be gone before the promise manifest. But it is a perfect life lesson for parents to send it from us into their offspring

❤ these videos! You so clearly articulate the things I've been saying for years! We are lazy. I have read the Bible 3xs now and I still have so much to learn. We need our churches to teach the Bible. I did it on my own because it's too hard to go through it at other people's pace. Every church I went to only did sermon series which is good, but that is way too little. It's the bare minimum. In order to grow we MUST READ THE ENTIRE BIBLE on our own. If cleared up a lot of confusion for me. My daughter is 11 and has read through the 4 Gospels. We go over what she has read. We will continue until she finishes reading the whole Bible. I owe it to her to make sure she completes it. It's our only hope and defense against the evils of this world. Pray for us. Context is king as we always said in Precepts Bible studies. Thanks for sharing this because I have been upset by these same things. Another is “money is the root of all evil” but people don’t know that it says THE LOVE of money is the root of all evil. Truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!!

That's odd that people use Matt. 18:20 as an excuse for not attending liturgies... when its meaning is literally the opposite. "Where two or more are gathered" is, in other words, assembly of believers, *_ecclesia,_* church, the body of Christ. Though this is not directly what it is said in Matt. 18:20, that's the concept in the background of it.
I had to do a long response to a post on Matthew 7 just yesterday. Thankfully, it was received well, with grace and respect. Usually, Matthew 7:1 is the only verse that Christian-haters know.

A pet peeve of mine is when Phil 4:13 is taken out of context. And it sounds great “I can do all things through Him (Christ) who strengthens me”. Some use that as an encouragement - that they are capable of great things. Much like the idea that “what the mind can conceive, you can achieve, if you believe”. But the context here is that Paul is referring to being in need and having plenty- that it makes no difference - his trust in Jesus enables him to persevere and be content - no matter the circumstances. Keep bringing it. You’re speaking to a wide swath of people. 🙂
I agree. I see it a lot on FB. I posted the one about judging by a family member and I explained they are taking it out of context. I was blocked after a very concerning response.
The truth isn't afraid of being confronted. The truth is not insecure. The truth is what people will live and die for, even martyrdom (unfortunately common today). If someone is insecure about a comment or being questioned, then they might need to re-evaluate their postion. Or maybe, you were really helpful and gave the person something to think about
Where have you been, asking myself. Just discovered you a couple weeks ago Melissa and watched a ton of your videos. You are blessed young lady--the gift of cutting through the garbage garbage garbage! I can watch your videos and not have to be ready to bite my tongue because of some lewd or off color comment, or some inaccurate deviation from truth in doctrine in our precious Bible. Your willingness to take touchy and sometimes questionable arguments head on is such a refreshing surprise. I absolutely love your impersonations when you talk with yourself on your character sketches. 'Entertainment at its finest' without a DOT of filth worked into the sketches. I also adore that your language is so carefully guarded. I never hear the sloppy slang flip vernacular slip out of your mouth so often heard from Christian's and non-christians alike, dang, heck, geez, gosh and the like. This loose language makes my ears cringe and is so often a sign of someone's depth in their relationship with our Lord, granted they are a true believer. You are one precious sister in the Lord, and it's obvious that your mind is guarded closely. My only regret, is that you have been spoken for.

I like to choose bible verses for conversation starters, but I love to turn it on its head. I'll choose verses like 1 Sam 15:32-33, 1 Kings 18:27, or John 14:15 and 1 Cor 11:29. I encourage anyone reading this to look these up and maybe even post them on your social media, if you're feeling brave 😉
Context, context, context!! We have to read the surrounding verses to know what is being said. When I was a deputy clerk in the court system, people would bring their jury summons to us and say they could not serve because the Bible says “do not judge”. Sad. Thank you for dealing with these 5 verses.
Thank you for this! Our pastor recently used Psalm 46 as the basis for an entire service encouraging “silence and solitude” as part of a push towards contemplative spirituality. After giving an overview on this passage in Psalms, he had us sit in silence in the auditorium for 15+ minutes, putting our “Bibles aside”, (to avoid distraction), while reading slides on the screen which included Psalm 46, his own statements such as: “God dwells in silence but we are surrounded by noise”, and “silence is a special form of attentiveness to God”, and quotes from Mother Teresa about listening prayer, along with a couple slides encouraging us to take deep breaths throughout those 15 min. This video is another good reminder that we need to be studying scripture on our own and not blindly accepting what we hear at church as truth.

I agree with you 100%. I post verse publicly in several places. Just trying to get the Word out there. But I am very aware of context. The last thing I want to do is confuse someone. This might be the first time they’ve seen the Word. I want the verses I post to be inviting and not confusing or hateful.
The last one my mom has on a mug someone gave her. We looked up the verse and saw it was about not a woman, but Israel. But I wasn't aware specifically Jerusalem. I am surprised you didnt do Philippians 4:13. And yes, just reading the verses around the verse in question helps alot! God bless!

My personal testimony relating to your topic involves the understanding of "hermeneutics" and "exegesis vs eisegesis" in unpacking true biblical "context." Psalm 46 is definitely still comforting. There are also several other positive erases about being still and waiting on God. Point being whether we’re in rebellion against God or we’re experiencing trouble we should stop and get our eyes on God.

A pet peeve of mine is when Phil 4:13 is taken out of context. And it sounds great “I can do all things through Him (Christ) who strengthens me”. Some use that as an encouragement - that they are capable of great things. Much like the idea that “what the mind can conceive, you can achieve, if you believe”. But the context here is that Paul is referring to being in need and having plenty- that it makes no difference - his trust in Jesus enables him to persevere and be content - no matter the circumstances.
Keep bringing it. You’re speaking to a wide swath of people. 🙂
I agree. I see it a lot on FB. I posted the one about judging by a family member and I explained they are taking it out of context. I was blocked after a very concerning response.
The truth isn't afraid of being confronted. The truth is not insecure. The truth is what people will live and die for, even martyrdom (unfortunately common today). If someone is insecure about a comment or being questioned, then they might need to re-evaluate their postion. Or maybe, you were really helpful and gave the person something to think about

Where have you been, asking myself. Just discovered you a couple weeks ago Melissa and watched a ton of your videos. You are blessed young lady--the gift of cutting through the garbage garbage garbage! I can watch your videos and not have to be ready to bite my tongue because of some lewd or off color comment, or some inaccurate deviation from truth in doctrine in our precious Bible.
Your willingness to take touchy and sometimes questionable arguments head on is such a refreshing surprise.
I absolutely love your impersonations when you talk with yourself on your character sketches. 'Entertainment at its finest' without a DOT of filth worked into the sketches. I also adore that your language is so carefully guarded. I never hear the sloppy slang flip vernacular slip out of your mouth so often heard from Christian's and non-christians alike, dang, heck, geez, gosh and the like. This loose language makes my ears cringe and is so often a sign of someone's depth in their relationship with our Lord, granted they are a true believer.
You are one precious sister in the Lord, and it's obvious that your mind is guarded closely.

I like to choose bible verses for conversation starters, but I love to turn it on its head. I'll choose verses like 1 Sam 15:32-33, 1 Kings 18:27, or John 14:15 and 1 Cor 11:29. I encourage anyone reading this to look these up and maybe even post them on your social media, if you're feeling brave 😉
Context, context, context!! We have to read the surrounding verses to know what is being said. When I was a deputy clerk in the court system, people would bring their jury summons to us and say they could not serve because the Bible says “do not judge”. Sad. Thank you for dealing with these 5 verses.
Context is everything. Careful, humble reading of scripture is critical.

Thank you for this! Our pastor recently used Psalm 46 as the basis for an entire service encouraging “silence and solitude” as part of a push towards contemplative spirituality.
After giving an overview on this passage in Psalms, he had us sit in silence in the auditorium for 15+ minutes, putting our “Bibles aside”, (to avoid distraction), while reading slides on the screen which included Psalm 46, his own statements such as: “God dwells in silence but we are surrounded by noise”, and “silence is a special form of attentiveness to God”, and quotes from Mother Teresa about listening prayer, along with a couple slides encouraging us to take deep breaths throughout those 15 min.
This video is another good reminder that we need to be studying scripture on our own and not blindly accepting what we hear at church as truth.
Thank you! After listening to this, I quote verses less and narrate full passages more.

I agree with you 100%. I post verse publicly in several places. Just trying to get the Word out there. But I am very aware of context. The last thing I want to do is confuse someone. This might be the first time they’ve seen the Word. I want the verses I post to be inviting and not confusing or hateful.
The last one my mom has on a mug someone gave her. We looked up the verse and saw it was about not a woman, but Israel. But I wasn't aware specifically Jerusalem. I am surprised you didnt do Philippians 4:13. And yes, just reading the verses around the verse in question helps alot! God bless!

Psalm 46 is definitely still comforting. There are also several other positive erases about being still and waiting on God. Point being whether we’re in rebellion against God or we’re experiencing trouble we should stop and get our eyes on God.

I think we need to talk about white balance tho for your filming. I'd encourage you to use a white balance card (18% gray card is generally used for white) for white balancing rather than auto white balance. It'll take your videos to the next level!! Oh, I got seriously tripped up on the scripture about what would a good father would provide to their children, looking at my experiences I thought it was saying that God would give me many rocks & poisonous snakes.
