    Fun fact, the ship graveyard is comprised of my failed attempts at the 6:1 boss on my first run before I restarted and took a different path.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +18

      hahaha nice. Honestly, the hardest part for me was the recovery on 6.1, just getting through it without any power ups. It was one of the tougher areas that way. The boss wasn't bad once I figured him out, but it definitely took me several tries or more to get what it was doing. The 6.2 boss feels the same at first, but once I found the trick to stick to the bottom of the screen and use a ship that can still hit the eye, it wasn't so bad. I tried to show a lot of my gameplay without power ups, as that's how most people will be playing it the first time through while learning. All the crazy good longplays no death make it look easy, and it is if you can keep your stuff, but once you die on the harder settings it's a different ballgame.

      @@ShmupJunkie Agreed. It’s kind of a shame that a lot of the more interesting content is kind of backloaded, but at the same time it kind of feels appropriate here, as a reward for those people who persevere as well as to not overload or overwhelm a new player. @@siekensou77 Once I got the overpowered Leo II it kind of became my go to. It made quick work of most. I found a good strategy on the 6.2 boss was sticking to the bottom of the screen and firing backwards like you said with homing. The lasers can’t hit you and I just strafe left to right at the bottom dodging the blue shots. It made the fight much easier once I figured that out.

    Your R-Type Final 2 is literally spot on! I have similar feelings as yours when it comes to stage designs.
    The first three stages are so underwhelming, particularly stage 3 where it feels unfinished, and you can
    especially tell by looking at the battleship that looks so plain and out-of-place. Thankfully, later stages
    have become much better, and I especially like stage 7.0 where it features a slug that's collecting dead
    ships, and it also features R-9WB Happy Days as a corrupted, trans-dimensional fighter. It has the best
    music in the game by far, and it is an incredible homage to the R-Type franchise. It's one of the reasons
    why I usually go for the 6.0-7.0 route. I'm also a fan of the DLC stages, which are so challenging to play!

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +14

      Yeah I remember we were chatting about stage 7.0 on the discord earlier. Such a bad ass level, this game needed more of that. All the final stages had some nice spectacle, and two out of the three 6 stages were also favorites. I thought the music overall, aside from a select few derivative tracks like stage 3, was quite good. It totally made me think of Above and Beyond on some levels and I love that group.

      use the albatross and its line of ships, the homing force really helps with clearing as you dont really need to put much thought into manually maneuvering the force, it also helps trivialize most bosses like the wrecking ball, the school of fish, and that stupid sandwich boss in sub space (simply hide in the bottom and focus on dodging the homing shots and let the homing force stick to the core), bosses absolutely melt against this force because it constantly deals contact damage on top of its shots, then use the leo2 when you finally unlock it and never look back unitl youve unlocked last dancer

Some points may be unrecoverable with it, or someone may eventually prove me wrong. But yeah, the enemies are too tanky and some bosses you can't kill fast enough with the basic R9.

    I have absolutely loved this game on my Series X and can't wait for more DLC and bonuses. I mostly agree with your review in general, though one problem I notice is that Bit items just flat-out don't seem to exist? There's one in the first stage, but then afterward they just stop showing up, while powerups get showered on you like mad. It makes the bit feel kinda useless since it's not much of a benefit to begin with, so the fact it's uber rare in final 2 is kinda funny tbh. I do hope they add that to the upcoming patch.

      Sadly this game has fallen victim to a lot of r-type noobs just rage posting against it after they got utterly destroyed. It really sucks to see. I think a lot of people checked it out cuz it's pretty and was a somewhat publicized kickstarter project but had no idea what they were getting themselves into with an arcade tough r-type game.
      Like 2 of the most critical reviews i've seen on youtube called the game boring and said the levels are sparse and the difficulty is "unfair"....yet all their captured footage was on practice difficulty, the difficulty where like half the enemies are removed and all of it was on the first 3 levels which they apparently never got past...and they still failed.

    I didn’t back it (didn’t know about the campaign) but bought it ASAP and….I like it. I loved Final 1 when it came out. I understand that a lot people are disappointed and underwhelmed, but that’s the thing with a lot of crowdfunded games. Is it perfect? No. Is it the worst thing ever? No. It’s just good if you understand where it comes from and what it tries to do. I think after a lot of updates and with more DLC, this could be a great game. Still, I have some gripes.
    1. Level Design
    2. Resources

    When they game is finished, it will be good.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +5

      The on aspect I am not getting some people having issue with is the length. It has 11 stages counting all 3 variant endings. There are 3 different stage 6 and 7s. Plus two DLC, so it's like 13 levels! That's a heck of a lot for an STG. And there are still 4 more DLC levels minimum coming. The two DLC levels were cool by the way I liked them. I'm glad you liked it though as I felt the same way. You have to give it a chance as it starts really slow and underwhelming but really gets going farther in, at least for me. I liked it less at first, and more the more I played it. It still doesn't have the kind of stage design of the originals, but I didn't expect it to, as neither did the first Final. I actually enjoyed it more than Final 1! As you'll see in the vid.

    • @a.rheser8181

      @@ShmupJunkie yeah, I maybe unfairly comparing it to the length of modern games, that’s true. It’s also true that compared to classic era shooters, this isn’t a short game. G-Darius comes to my mind as another long game. Final 2 certainly has a lot of replay value and endgame content, (and fanservice) which I’m doing right now because I yet have to unlock the Cerberus and the Hades. Grinding for the resources right now. I agree that it seems incomplete and I look forward to more classic stages. It certainly is my type of game. I can see me enjoying this more than Final 1 simply because I seem to be doing better in this one. But the unlocking of ships is very grindy…
      Great video BTW and perfectly compliments your Final history of R-Type, which I Liked a lot. I hope that some day you will bless us with a history of Darius games, these and Last Hope and as I mentioned Metal Black are my favourites.

      Unlocking some better ships, even early ones like the delicatessen makes the early stages much easier to finish as well. And faster. There are not many people who fell in love with the early levels, but I was glad I made it through to see the better content. Stage 4 is the hump, it's better but also harder. If you can get through it you are home free to see the good stuff from stage 6 variants and after. One other thing that helps while you are learning is the dose. It remains collected even after you die and continue. So power it up and use it for the hardest section in a level. People forget to take advantage of that screen clearing bomb.

    11:50 I had to pause the video on Xbox to get out my phone to comment because the ship graveyard level was an absolute marvel for me. I'm only 24 so I grew up with RTF and I have to say I _really_ love when these games explore atmospheric, dark, and dreary concepts like stage 3.5 of RTF, and the small backstory of the Cerberus fighter from Delta. "Dark Forest's Watchdog" is still to this day one of my favorite video game OSTs. The ship graveyard hit the feels for me with both the atmosphere and OST. Makes me wish there was an expanded lore universe I could lose myself in.

      Have you ever gotten a chance to go back to some older ones and play Delta? If you love atmosphere that one is amazing, especially the final stage. It blows just about anything away and is worth it just to see it through. Stage, music everything. It’s a hard game more so than either Final, but the last 3 stages and esp the end are masterpieces.

      @@ShmupJunkie Unfortunately not. I did extensively enjoy Dimensions on Xbox 360, and ended up scoring pretty high on both games' leaderboards. LOL, that wall of ships on 7.2 was nasty the first time through. I found a really good way through 6.0 consistently, but not 7.2
      when weak. Not unique to this game though, as even the original RType, recovering on Stage 7 is insanely hard and makes 7.2 here seem like easy mode. On the OG game if I screw up on 7, I'm done. I'll just start over or play again next time haha.

    Damn, not the first comment :(
    This channel has gotten me giving shooters a real "shot". I, just now, finished playing some R-Type on the PC Engine. Played some CD, then switched over to Hu Card. (Does the CD version have unlimited continues?)
    I've tried to play R-Type dozens of times, but I kept dying right away. It's not like Blazing Lasers which gives you a few stages to settle in, no, it's sniping you from behind with the 3rd guy you meet. I had always just given up, it was too hard to be fun. But not tonight, I was going to at least get to the first boss.
    I died over and over and over and over again, but finally I got there (and the boss was easy to beat). Level 2, died some more. So I switched off the CD version and tried Hu Card. And know what? I got through the first level only dying once. I knew what was coming, what to do, where to be. That level that, I swear, for YEARS (I've probably tried R-Type 20 or 30 times over the past 20-25 years on different platforms) kicked my ass right away so I gave up, will always be easy for me now.
    And I got to the 2nd worm-in-heart boss before I used my 2 continues on the Hu card version. Given maybe 5-10 more tries, I'm sure I'd beat it. This game that has been too hard for me my whole life now suddenly feels reasonable.
    (I will add, it's just because I was never motivated to try. I've beaten Castlevania III and the original Japanese Mario 2 on hard mode, so it's not that I suck at games, I just never felt motivated to play shooters until recently).

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +2

      R-Type is very much that way. You beat your head against the wall and it only gets harder. But once you figure out a stage you pretty much have it and you can reproduce it. It feels good when you can just do that and it becomes easy. That being said, later in the game stage 5-6 and after, you pretty much end up having to no death it. Recovering some spots is insanely tough. But once you figure out the levels and how to get through them without losing your power ups, they are just as manageable. If you manage to get to Stage 4 or 5 by the time you've had enough, consider it successful. It's a really tough game that one. We all played it endlessly back then.

    Glad to see your review up. I was waiting for it! I think your take on the game is a lot more positive than mine. I've already unlocked all the ships available currently and am back to playing Final 1 until the next update. Meanwhile, I'm remembering all the things Final 1 got right. Remember the force and wave cannon previews from Final 1? Where are they in Final 2? I'm glad you can walk around the museum now, but now you can't tell what a ship's lasers will look like before you register it. Let's be honest, here: just as some of the ships are OP AF, some of them are real stinkers.... usable, but painful. It would be nice to be able to tell which is which before you get in the cockpit. Final 1 did it. What happened?
    Oh, and handy tip for 7.1: at that spot where you're going around the last battleship and all the R-9s do a flyby, if you hit your DOSE right as the ships are on the screen, you'll *also* take out the bridge and main guns of the battleship, so when you fly over it, you don't have to fire on anything. You can just put your ship in the top right corner and put your controller down for the rest of the stage. It's again one of those "what's in the background, what can I interact with" things...

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +1

      I get the feeling they had more time with the original Final, and also because it was physical only and updates weren't a thing yet, you couldn't get away with releasing it and improving it later. That seems to be a common thing now, and given it's state you can tell there was a deadline or pressure. Hopefully within several months to a year, if they don't just focus on new content and also fix the old, a lot of this can be ironed out. I imagine it's a massive undertaking as was the first. So they don't get a pass, but hopefully what's clearly undone gets finished. Just having 100 ships alone is daunting enough. I'm surprised the final stages are in such a good and finished form, including the DLC, versus the actual early game which needed more time and polish. They either started with the coolest stuff and worked backwards, or they simply got better as the development of later stages progressed.
      I haven't played the game just enough to discover a lot of those little secrets, so I've made a note and will try it next time. I didn't mind that section but really... of things on the list to easily fix, the checkpoint can't be that far back just watching the cinema unfold again.

TX-T "Eclipse" and R-11S2 "No Chaser" are my go-to ships at the moment for Score Attacks. Having the Steam version, I thought it'd be funny to play in the SteamVR Theater Mode, it was pretty epic and some of the surface/effect shaders appear to actually have depth information that can produce stereoscopic projections, but the framerate was about halved so I couldn't get very far due to lag. Getting past that you'll blow through 5 and be onto the cool stage 6 variants to enjoy. I don't think I ever expected this one to live up to my old favorites either, but I got to play some new RType and actually had fun with it... eventually once I got far enough. For anyone who stops at stage 5 or before is pretty much seeing the least part of the game and missing the best. Which isn't a good thing, that's not great game design. I was in the 7th grade the first time I had ever heard of RTF. My friend had the game manual inside of his school binder and he showed me it raving about how cool it was. I was able to play it at my cousins house (my uncle was a huge SNK fan and collected arcade cabs so that was how he had heard of r-type) sometime later I got my own used copy thru gohastings. I was so crap at the game I used cheats on baby mode and used the 3.0 exploit to unlock all the ships. Now I'm 28 playing that same copy of RTF on my ps2 and RTF2 on my ps4. My interest in shooters has been revived and I'm loving this channel as well as others like it.
    I love the game but I wish it had more lore and cinematic cutscenes as well as unique updated gameplay. When I see cool Einhander levels on the PSX I wish RTF2 had some more of those action moments with crazy camera angles. It feels like there is loads of lore missing because I'm not even sure when this game is taking place in the story or even what its all about. I wished it had a bigger budget or more production time so we could have seen a more flushed out story with voice acting instead of just an opening demo that gets underwhelming after a while. The gameplay seems solid but the game is super stingy with certain upgrades like Bits and an unpredictable 3D hitbox. Some of the levels don't flow together as something cohesive, like going from a plant production area of a space colony to fighting a warship and back inside to another bydo infested area of a space colony then followed up by going underwater??? Its confusing but you can edit your own playlist after all. Some of the older ship effects and polishing up are missing, like ships no longer "grind" on the walls and floors of stages with a unique "sparking" animation. Also no final wave cannon for the final boss fight? It didnt seem like the epic finale of the first RTF. Just so many little things feel like they are missing. Either way Im still obsessed with the game.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +1

      I think I noticed a lot of detail and lore the farther you get into the game, but it's not ever really explained. It feels more like a mix of RType's hits, and each level is unique of itself without too much connecting them all together. So it feels a bit all over the place stage design wise, with some being really good and others not, but not necessarily a cohesive whole. Like you said, it's still fun in the end if you put in the time and see all the good stuff, I ultimately enjoyed it too. And I like the different stage endings and alternate realities. You just never really know the how or why, it's just kind of presented as a cool idea at times and left at that.

    New to your channel and loving your style of review. This is actually my first R-Type (not counting the time I emulated 3) and I'm finding a lot to enjoy even on Switch. Your wrap-up of this review makes me think of a concept of sorts I came up with about different "types" of a score. A "good" 7 out of 10 vs a "bad" 7 out of 10 if you will. I genuinely believe that sometimes a good 7 out of 10 game can be more enjoyable than a bad 8 or 9 and Final 2 is a brilliant example of that in my eyes. I've beaten the main game and the DLC several times now in my journey to try and get good enough to beat it on R-Typer difficulty.
    Yes, I realize I just watched a review on a game I've already played, but as a game design major, I think it's important to watch reviews on games I've played to better understand the subjective elements of its design.

What I liked most, what I didn't. In the end , we are all guilty of also liking some very bad games haha. There is just something we found addicting. And that's my standard of measure. Did I have a good time with it or not, and was it worth my time and money. That's all it comes down to, despite graphics/sounds/etc and even if it's got issues. Sounds like you fall into the same category with this one as you're still enjoying it and wanting to play it more.

      Yes that's a big problem with the game, you front load all your weakest and bland stages in a difficult game and you won't see most of them. The original RType was the opposite. The first 4-5 stages are by far the coolest and most creative. They are all brilliantly designed, but aesthetically, the first 3 stages and maybe 5 are the most interesting. So most players who never got past the stage 3 mothership at least ended up seeing some of the cooler levels of the game. You gotta really work to get to the better stuff in Final 2. They even hid the dobkeratops for only the RTyper difficulty.

    Great review mate. Having not gotten massively far in the game, mid level 3, (yet) due to lack of good awake time (I need to be very alert for games like this) I like what I saw whilst also noting that stage 1 and 2 (definitely harder) weren't your typical R-Type puzzle shooter mechanicals but personally I think that' might be because they are trying to attract a new audience for the series, slowly luring new players into what for me so far has been much easier than previous games. I even took a stab at R-Typer, which on the first level is completely doable even for me LOL, another indicator to me that this is to try an attract a new player base, which as shooter fans we should be grateful for, growing the player base is ultimately how we get these back into the limelight, where they belong, for more developers to invest time in this genre we all love. Whilst I have not seen a massive amount of the game I personally feel I will in time and don't doubt for a second that it's going to get a lot tougher. Checkpoints are generous, unlike some of the previous games and balanced similarly to the original Final game, for me.
    As fan service goes, for me they delivered, I think it is much more important to deliver a game that everyone can enjoy, as opposed to a game that only elite players can enjoy, which ultimately cuts off a lot of gamers from experiencing the magic of these games and ultimately limiting sales. Being a reasonable (in my younger years) to these days and average shump player (on my good days LOL) I feel this offers a good challenge but obviously can't comment for the elite community. Excellent job mate, I agreed with every woird. Excellent edit, and that face hugger skit had me in stitches, along with Cleetus, I sincerely appreciate the effort and time you put into these, as a fellow RUclipsr I know this is hours and hours of effort.

It really doesn't punish you in terms of failure and continues are endless, so you can experiment with ships and play around until you figure out what works. Despite the fact it doesn't hold up in the same way in terms of complex stage design, there's a lot of folks having a good time with it, so it's doing something right. And some high level players are finding ways to enjoy the content too on the highest difficulty that are on my discord and I've been seeing online. Opinions will always be mixed on this one, but they are on Final as well. I will have to do a continuation for the facehugger in a future video as I think some want to know what happened to him. First of all, thank you so much for putting this review together. You answered every question I had about it and then some.
    I think I'm in the minority, but I was a huge fan of Final 1 for it's atmosphere and storytelling (I love the poems dammit!) and I feel like the story here seems to be a big step back.
    But, it's awesome to hear that almost everything else is a huge step forward.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +1

      You're not as much of a minority as you think. I just think the fans of the earlier games are more vocal and Final less so. It had a lot of more causal fans too that the earlier games did not, and I don't mean that in a bad way. It was an RType that more people can enjoy aside from the typical STG fan. Delta is pretty brilliant, and if you are able to make it through, that final stage in my opinion is more moody, more brilliant, and more awesome all around than anything Final did manage afterward. In general, the late half of Delta, last 3 stages or so, are just as bad ass in terms of lore and mood as what Final continued. Even if you have to learn at first with saves to get through, as it's absolutely harder than Final, it will be worth seeing it through.

    Nice, balanced review that highlights both the good and not so good aspects. of the game. The Switch version is mostly serviceable, but it REALLY chugs on stage 7.1 and is almost intolerable, especially with that checkpoint placement. It feels a little harsh to point that out when you consider what the game is and that we can have it portable at all though.
    Ultimately, I think Final 2's level design and pacing of the action never really reach the heights of Delta, and in terms of tone it never really reaches the depths of melancholy that Final manages. But it sits somewhere nicely in the middle, and it has all of those ships with enough stages and difficulty settings that perhaps it doesn't matter so much, especially when there's more homage stages on the way. Personally, I'm just happy we got more R-type and hope that continues into the future. It's not dead anymore at least!
    I think you maybe sold Stage 2.0's level design a little short though - it does actually have some interesting elements running through it, in that it doesn't want you just holding down fire for the duration of the stage. The pineapple flowers only shoot pollen in response to your shots, and the glow bugs are attracted to the biggest light sources (including your Force, rapidfire, and wave cannon charge). So there's a delicate balance of using wave cannon to make the pineapples expose the weakspot, while not attracting too much attention from the glow bugs while your force is doing other things.These things are introduced separately before being combined and I think that's an interesting dynamic. It's maybe the only R-type level I can think of that tries to punish you for holding down fire (Super R-type's slowdown doesn't count!). The aesthetic and that boss fight really are bland though, you're not wrong.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад

      That's a good point on Stage 2, I don't know if I noticed all that detail on the first go rounds. I did notice the bugs attracted to light and how the flowers don't fire if you don't attack them. I think as I play it more I will get to pick up on even more, as I do notice little details the more I play I didn't the first time around. Thanks for pointing this out as it's a pretty cool idea that will likely be lost on most.
      I feel like the Switch shouldn't have any problem running this game given it's not overly complex graphically and it's a pretty modern system. I will bet if they have time to optimize it more as they likely had to rush it out, it can get a whole lot better. It seems more a byproduct of the Switch being the weakest of the consoles and needing more optimization time they haven't had yet. It runs like butter on Steam so I had no complaints at all.

    Found this video at random.
    I'm an Old semi-shmup fan that only had one R-Type game under his belt until then, which was Delta for the PS1 (I was more into Star Soldier and Galaga back then). When I learned that this game was being made through Kickstarter, I plonked money down to make sure I got a copy for the PS4 just because of how much I loved Delta.
    I won't lie, I was a little disappointed... that I was given a Japanese copy which required a Japanese account to gain access to DLC down the road. So, I ended up buying this game again for a second time and just combined the Inaugural Flight edition with the Kickstarter exclusive slip cover for the game and called it my complete edition (then sent my Japanese copy to a friend of mine).
    I gotta say, It's as hard as cast iron ball-bearings to play, as I'm not the most experienced R-typer or Shmup player, but I've had lots of fun, even despite the pineapple level giving me a few hours of frustration. It was everything I wanted to see and more, especially with how custom the game can get, and I'm so glad that the game gets extremely creative and interesting after the first quarter of stages. The R-Type Slug in the Garbage level was probably one of the strangest yet coolest level following boss I've seen in a game like this.

So far I have only played the first four stages and I wasn't overly impressed (I didn't quit in disgust, I've just playing a few other games recently, including G-Darius HD which I love!). I won't bore you with my complaints as they're mostly the same as everyone else, but it's nice to know it's worth playing further when I have the time. It would be amazing if one day they called in someone like M2 to make a true pixel art follow-up to the first three games, but I have a feeling that may remain the stuff of dreams!

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  3 года назад +1

      If you've made it as far as 4, that's kind of the hump stage. Just get through it and five is pretty easy by comparison. After which it gets good. Regardless of which path you end up on, once you finish the game and unlock a more powerful ship, those initial levels aren't nearly the same kind of slog and you'll find you blow through them easily. That's what happened in my case and then it became more motivating to see the remaining final stages. It's never going to be the best of the RTypes but it did end up being worth it once I got to the cooler content and did some unlocking. I don't see M2 doing anything RType related soon but never say never I guess. I'm happy they are releasing new games of their own.
