  • A Federal High Court in Kano has issued an order halting the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) from enforcing the recently approved electricity tariff hike for Band A consumers.
The court, responding to a suit filed by several companies including Super Sack Company Limited and BBY Sacks Limited, as well as industry groups like the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria Limited, restrained NERC and KEDCO from implementing the tariff hike pending further legal proceedings.
The court also prohibited the defendants from threatening to disconnect electricity supply to the plaintiffs for refusing to accept the increased tariff.
NERC had approved a significant tariff increase for Band A customers, raising their rates from N66 to N225 per kilowatt-hour, which sparked criticism from the House of Representatives and other stakeholders, who have called for a suspension of the new tariff implementation.
