Canadian artists from the70s and 80s, we didn't know how good we had it back then. Rush brought me here , easily finding April wine,b.t.o, Chilliwack,F.M,Max Webster, Gordon Lightfoot,Streetheart....I could continue 👍🇨🇦 Thanks for sharing
37 years later, and this is still Pop Gold. I LOVED M+M when I was in college, and played them on my college radio show, after being turned on to them by the "coolest" girl in school, and I still love Martha's music all those years later...
So catchy, so danceable, an 80s gem! Martha and the Muffins' best song in my opinion. Yes, it should have been a worldwide smash hit a la Madonna's Into The Groove. What I can say is that it was a fave of WLIR DJ's in the NYC/Tristate, and when my best college buddy, who lived in Toronto at the time---the year after we both graduated---took me to a club and the DJ spun "Song in My Head," the place just about exploded. Anyone who grew up in this era was blessed beyond measure.
I listened WLIR back in the day too! Turned me onto so much great music. They were playing so many groups years before the broke, REM, Simple Minds, etc.
The general music listening public aren't very bright, sad to say. At least those of us who sought out "New Wave" in the 80s instantly recognized how incredible M and M were.
@@jeffreywolfe1 Come on, that sounds awfully condescending. I grew up in the '80s, there were a million songs like this. You're talking about this song like it's the work of Mozart, and people weren't "very bright" to catch its brilliance. I can name many catchy songs that, for whatever reason, never became worldwide hits. The funny thing is that pop music snobs whine and moan about how this "artist" isn't recognised, how that "artist" isn't recognised (ever notice how people who make bubblegum pop often call themselves "artists"? I've never heard a writer call him or herself an "artist"), yet when you ask them to name their favourite ten movies, seven of them will be _Fast and Furious_ flicks, the other three will be _Star Wars_ movies, and when you mention _Citizen Kane_ or something similar, they give you a blank stare. Not saying people can't enjoy bubblegum music and bubblegum movies, yet I'm sure you see the contradiction.
Totally agree, Mike. Hard to believe she'll be 70 this year... I was also stunned to learn she's been suffering from Parkinson's for the last 20 years.
To all our most patient fans. The 30 year wait is over! Our 6th album, 'The World Is A Ball' (which includes several versions of 'Song In My Head' is now available as a pre-order here at PledgeMusic: www.pledgemusic.com/projects/theworldisaball Help make this our best reissue PledgeMusic campaign ever and spread the word! Many thanks, Martha & Mark
Buying Black Stations/White Stations back in the day brought me to all these beautiful tunes by you talent people. Martha, you are absolutely adorable in this video. (Well out of it too, lol.)
I remember seeing this video in 85 on CBC's Video Hits. I can relate to this song. We see some relatable 80s hairstyles and fashion...the baggy men's pants, golf shirts, button up shirts sans tie(leather and film ties were right around the corner), blazers with rolled sleeves(thank Don Jonson, Miami Vice ) Modonnaesque hair. The Body Electric by RUSH was also on that episode - EXCELLENT video!
i love this song i wrote martha and the muffins a fan letter when echo beach came out and they replied that felt pretty cool to a 12 year old i still love these records and all the spin offs
Layers and layers of creativity: smart, compelling lyrics, gorgeous arrangements, memorable songs, M+M was pure talent! They deserve a prominent place in pop music than they got
Great music video made on a zero budget. Looks like a good time was being had by all, not worrying about how 'professional' the final product looked. Refreshing.
This song, as far as I can remember, was their last great hit but am probably wrong. Could not stand "Echo Beach", then was head over heels for " Black Stations White Stations" ( their best , I feel). This song, though was awesome! What a character.....one with a great deal of class! Martha had made the 80s all the better! Loved all the videos and is constantly working at one thing or another, she is Toronto's very best if ever there was!! I want more.....and it's 2020! Lol
It's sad how we forget the more interesting music we've created in Canada. I'm squeezing it into the play-list of the She-Boom! show on Co-op Radio in Vancouver.
Hello Martha and the muffins, still listen to this wonderful Song of yours, personally for me it's so uplifting and supersympathic (sorry for my broken english), want to buy some of your CD's, let's see, If i come to them here in Germany..so any chance for a signed autograph card? you all there in Canada please stay safe from the Corona Virus and many greetings from Brunswick in Germany :)
I don't know what is wrong with me i was born in mid 90s but i find myself listing to 70s and 80s songs.. Seems this was the real music with flow.. forget about this new music with nudity and full of drug's, this is pure music, I wish i can feel that 80😂 moment. Respecting all Kenyan in Canada
Always loved how awesome their videos were. You can totally throw this on and people would totally be hooked at looking at it. They sure took advantage of the promotional video. But I'm sure it's ore a group effort. But still. Thank you Muchmusic for playing this stuff, so i could tape it off of tv and play the snot out of it later. If there's a new retro station that Much is doing. I sure hope like hell that ALL your videos are being played. Because they still kick ass in today's world. Thank you for the great tunes
Whenever I see Mark in this video, I can't help but think that Martin Short missed a perfect opportunity for an SCTV impersonation (most likely with Catherine O'Hara as Martha).
Yes Tinker Barfield's playing is fabulous. We shot both videos on limited budgets in Toronto and it was not economically feasible to bring up Tinker (and Yogi Horton on drums) from New York where they were based.
During the second lockdown I was going into the building I worked in on Bay Street and a man was sitting on a bench in front of the building blasting this song. I danced my way to the elevators!
Doesn't her voice just soar over this song nicely? Lovely!! But what I like is that music - the bass player would make Bernard Edwards smile - its like a Duran Duran bass line
Stumbled across this M+M MV, the Hair stylest in the first few frames is Luc Badard RIP. My ex bussiness partner at Ricochet Hair in Toronto. I remember the day they did the shoot. Great Album. The 80's were great times.
We just don't have the same talent now as we did coming out of Canada back in the 80's. Corey Hart, Chalk Circle, Frozen Ghost, Glass Tiger, The Headpins, Red Rider, Eight Seconds, The Box. I could go on.
Sure we do. Canada is bigger in music now than ever before. I'm not into Drake, Bieber, The Weeknd, Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes, but our parents weren't into Chalk Circle and Frozen Ghost either.
We do have good talent now. Mainstream radio won't play it. They gave up on it after the early 90's: Rheostatics, Art Bergmann, Wax Mannequin, Clone, Selina Martin, Carolyn Mark, Geoff Berner, Kris Demeanor....
This brings back so many great memories. Like most everyone else in Toronto back then I was introduced to "Martha..... with their release of Echo Beach. A couple of years later I found myself working for a small public accounting firm (Snow & Manock) and who was one of this firm's clients?....none other than this fabulous group (we also had Bruce Coburn, Carol Pope and Rough, The Paradise Club?? and a few other Toronto based musicians) I was thrilled to be involved in producing their financial statements as at this point I was very familiar with their music. I remember when this single was released and thinking it was their best to date. I was surprised it didn't end up being more popular than Echo Beach. I also remember getting free tickets to a Toronto gig promoting this album's release.....I think it was at The Music Hall but could be mistaken as it was 30 years ago. I still enjoy listening to this tune and Black Stations/White Stations album.
Nice comment, but their names are spelled Bruce Cockburn and Carole Pope and her band was Rough Trade. Their album with "Black Stations / White Stations" was titled "Mystery Walk."
when i hear this in the car i CCCRRRANK IT UP lol. used to listen to this on tape cassette in my 88 cadillac. sounded awesome on the Delco Concert Sound system!
Loved you guys since you did an in-store for Trance and Dance when I was working at Kelly's Stereo Mart on Barrington St. in Halifax around '80-81. Cheers. :)
Now this titular [ that 's not what you're all thinking perverts!😅] song in my head is actually playing in my head when i moved to Toronto in the mid 80's at that time it was a really cool hub for music and this got loads of airplay ! 📻🎧
Agreed!! I can remember the dance floor exploding to it when I visited my best college buddy in Toronto after we all graduated in 1985. At least it raised the roof in Canada. Should have done so worldwide.....
I can't wait! It's wonderful to have your recordings available again on reissued CD! Would love to see you on tour in Winnipeg, MB, if you can make it this way! Love you, Martha and Mark!
Please take me back to those days, get me out of the 2020s!!

Oops, Kim Mitchell, Hawk Nelson, Surffergettes, Red Rider, Loverboy, KLAATU, Thousand Foot Krutch,
Still sounds fresh and new even after all these years!
Amazing songs I still enjoy them very much 🌹🌹🌹💋
Nearly 40 years later this song still holds up
That is a killer bass line. Awesome song
37 years later, and this is still Pop Gold. I LOVED M+M when I was in college, and played them on my college radio show, after being turned on to them by the "coolest" girl in school, and I still love Martha's music all those years later...
I was at UWO in 1982 playing this... where were you? RadioWestern
I lived again when I heard this
Martha has such a great voice.
Adam C. - Understatement of the year. This is one of the most subtly brilliant vocal performances ever

best album out of the eighties - still listen to it regularly.
Every time I need a smile, I watch this irresistible time capsule from the eighties.
Now I have THIS song in my head going round and round!
More contagious than Wuhan Flu
This is great in so many levels! Just can't believe that was not a huge hit in the 80s.
The general music listening public aren't very bright, sad to say. At least those of us who sought out "New Wave" in the 80s instantly recognized how incredible M and M were.
I remember it getting a lot of play.
Clearly, it wasn't great on so many levels.

It was a pretty big hit; I certainly knew it. They were played in the UK a lot, too. It's very English sounding.
Awesome Canadian music from the 80’s...Love it!
Remember hearing this song about 1984 at the CNE...loved it!
Martha Johnson was a pop diva of the 80's...simple, yet sensual...great Canadian talent.
Totally agree, Mike. Hard to believe she'll be 70 this year...
I was also stunned to learn she's been suffering from Parkinson's for the last 20 years.
Very under rated band ,i was in high school when Martha and the Muffins came out on radio 1980, esp. Echo Beach,it made my teen life of music.
Echo Beach is one my faves. Like Always tampons its not number one but it's up there
80s were truly the most remarkable decade in human history.
They were. Nothing else comes close. Humanity’s peak by far.

Very cleverly choreographed and produced video, lovely tune and performance.
Classic track. Still sounds good today
Great tune! Martha's cute ;)

what a lovely song, thank you for this and many greetings from germany :)
i'm one of many fans. loving it.
This was made in Canada......beatiful funk.......I like this more than the Tragically Hip etc.....

I just love that part!
One of their best
The best Martha and the Muffins song, in my opinion. This should have been a worldwide hit.
strongly agree
Least it was a hit in their homeland of Canada, That is the main thing
ABSOLUTELY! 👍😀
