    Great video! It's interesting that you went with Seimitsu buttons. When I did this same mod to one of my AES sticks several years ago, I initially went with Seimitsu 24mm buttons but found that they would sometimes bind when pushed down. Unless I pushed the buttons directly in the center, they would catch going either up or down. So no tapping the buttons on their edges. I ended up replacing them with Sanwa OBSF buttons and they worked out far better for me. Maybe something has changed in their production.

      Oh that’s really interesting Todd. Had I known that I probably wouldn’t have even ordered these but I’m glad I did. I’ve been playing with the stick for about a week and a half now and thankfully haven’t had any issues. They snapped in pretty easily and really couldn’t even be rotated once secured. Thanks for the tip on the Sanwas, I’ll go that route if I ever need to.

      @@ScarletSprites I did this same mod with my AES stick but with Sanwa OBSF buttons like Todd. Unfortunately, I kind of regret not going with the Seimitsu buttons. At first, I really loved the glossy and super soft Sanwas but I found them harder to do simultaneous button presses as compared to Seimitsu. It's not a huge deal but I do notice it on some fast-paced games. I've thought about desoldering the Sanwa's and putting in Seimitsu's but, honestly, it's really not that big an issue or worth the hassle at least.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, I can definitely say that I do. A few days ago I pulled the stock stick and used it for a bit. It’s not bad, but it definitely has a different type of response when you push it. The Seimitsus are a little smaller and tighter, they snap back quicker too.

    The AES sticks have a Seimitsu LS-30 as standard. The stock buttons are pretty darn good as they are, not as good as the Seimitsu buttons you used, but pretty close.
    I've done loads of these and funny enough i still prefer to use my stock untouched AES sticks. SNK knew exactly what they were doing there.

    Fantastic mod. Stick looks way better with coloured buttons and I'm sure plays better too with arcade kit installed. For more durability push the wires through and then wrap around the metal solder tags before soldering. You won't get any connections failing / breaking with that method . Keep up the good work!

    Man, I'm really happy you made this video. I just picked up my second bean controller boxed/mint from Japan for the bargain price of $36 plus shipping. I'm getting more used to the bean controllers, but I still don't love them. I want to get an OG AES arcade stick like you have and I want to get a Hori I or Hori II so I can have a chance at beating Magician Lord and they are just so darn cool if you can find one that doesn't have too much cancer on it. I have the full blown Neo Geo sickness... the AES collection is growing quickly. I'm up to 9 CIB carts. Still focusing on the more inexpensive titles until there are no more to buy... then I will promptly switch to MVS since I have the Magic Key. My most recent pickups were... JP Real Bout Fatal Fury, JP King of Fighters 95, US Baseball Stars, US 3 Count Bout and US NAM 1975 which I think was the most recent one I purchased that I told you about. I picked up all of these in the sub $100 range. I'll keep my eyes out for a nice clean AES stick. Would love to muster up the bravery to take on the project having never soldered anything in my life before. There are probably worse projects to take on first. There are some MVS titles that are inevitable purchases because they either weren't released on the AES... or they are just so astronomically expensive that I would never consider anything other than MVS. Are there any titles you can think of I shouldn't wait to get because of prices trending upward? I have an opportunity to purchase an Ironclad which I know is a bootleg of the Neo Geo CD release, but it's not all that common... even as an unofficial Neo Geo MVS game. Thanks again!

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  5 лет назад

      You are definitely rolling! That’s a lot of Neo in a short time. I really like Baseball Stars and Nam 1975, those are often under appreciated. As far as MVS musts, I’d probably say grab your Metal Slugs because you’re looking at four figures for their AES counterparts. For the AES sticks I’m showing, I sniped both of them on eBay on auctions that were ending on a weekday. Each were about $60 shipped.

    • @PabstOban
      @PabstOban 5 лет назад

      @@ScarletSprites I'll have to keep my eye out for those deals. They are certainly out there! As long as you don't mind waiting 4-5 weeks for them to come to your front door. Still, it's a lot less expensive than buying from a local collector. While I like Baseball Stars Pro, it does have one really frustrating thing... when someone hits a pop fly... while the AI draws your nearest fielder to the ball... the second he appears on the screen... you are on your own for catching the ball which can be frustrating for line drives as you can't predict (theirs no mini top down view that a lot of baseball games have... or a zoom out feature... which I'm really surprised they didn't utilize as it's so heavily used for other games such as Samurai Showdown and Super Dodge Ball). I'd have to boot up the Pi3 to verify if these issues were fixed in Baseball Stars 2 or not. The sequel runs about $50-75 more.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  5 лет назад

      I can’t quite recall if it behaves that way in BS2. I like both games, but 2 is the one I always end up rolling with.

    I bought an arcade stick brand new a few years ago that was left over stock for the Sega Saturn. It came in excellent condition in the original box that was covered in plastic wrap.
    I put it up until I could get a USB adapter for it so I could play with it on my PC arcade. After a few years had passed and the prices for the USB adapters for the Sega Saturn Arcade stick came down, I purchased one.
    I have to say that the stick shouldn't be called an Arcade stick per say because the joystick is a little more stiff than an actual arcade stick. I wonder if I keep on playing with it, will it loosen up more. I also have to become use to playing with an arcade stick again.

    I've actually replaced my NeoGeoX stick guts with the guts from an AES stick, along with Semitsu buttons and a red bat top. It's now perfect, literaly. It's wonderful and miles better than the stock NeoGeoX stick. While identical in size and weight, the gate is trash and had slop.

    @mukiex4413 4 года назад +1

    For weight: You could also remove the buttons from the plate assembling and then just screw two of its holes into the plastic (flipped so it's backwards). That will let you keep most of the weight without any extra special stuff added. The overall balance might be off, though.

    • @ScarletSprites

    About the soldering, looks like you're under the impression that you have to paint or spread the solder on the connections/wires. Don't do this. Heat the connection and wire, holding them still, as moving will make possibly functional, but bad joints. While touching the iron tip onto the connection and wire (again they are as stationary as humanly possible), touch the solder onto the connection/wire near the iron tip. Capillary action will suck solder into the connection and you feed the solder into the "puddle" that's created. Don't paint it on, just let it suck into the puddle. I know you talked about the struggle you have with soldering, just thought I would give some tips, no judgement here, it just takes practice and emulating what you see (or hours of trial and error) before you "git gud" as it were. One last tip, if you're using a cheap (meaning like the

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  4 года назад +1

      No, I get that you’re not supposed to do that. My issue often seems to be that I don’t have a third hand. I struggle with holding the piece I’m soldering, the solder, and the iron. I also probably do this twice a year and I generally despise doing it, so it’s not a great environment for improving. The irony there is if I were to get better at it, I’d probably hate doing it less. It’s just been a vicious cycle.

    • @boogiemanspud
      @boogiemanspud 4 года назад +1

      @@ScarletSprites Alternately if you add Flux on the wire/joint you can pre load a bit of solder on the tip. The reason they say not to do this is the Flux from the core will burn off while the liquid solder sets on the iron. Since you have Flux on the joint and wire, it works fine without issue. This can help free up your hands since you don't have to hold the solder.

    Nice, I'd love an original cabinet. Is the AES arcade controller a bad one?
    Did SNK choose Sanwa for their cabinets and AES controller?

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  5 лет назад +1

      No, the AES stick is actually pretty nice. People seem more fond of it than the bean controller that came out later, but since I've never used one I can't really say. I'm uncertain what parts were in their original machines. The buttons in mine were worn and I replaced all of them with Happ. The sticks are also Happ competitions, but I've heard that the IL Eurosticks are a little better.

    Another good video! -- What are your thoughts on an 8 way gate, like the JNX GOTW? I almost expected you to install one, but i know some prefer the standard square gate. Also, might be a good idea to use some silicone grease on stick stick while you're in there to minimize wear against the metal. Shin-Etsu G-40M is available on some arcade component sites, but it's overpriced - any pure silicone grease should be safe for plastic. It 's overkill, but i figure might as well if you're already taking it apart.

      I do like the octo gates, and I use them pretty consistently on my candy cabs. Not being overly familiar with the AES stick prior to getting it, I did want to see how I liked the overall feel of the stock. I may certainly switch the gate at some point in the future.

      There are a few Facebook groups but I don’t typically follow forums well enough to recommend buying from any particular one. My advice though would be to get a Japanese AES (they’re cheaper) and then install a Unibios in it. You can likely find one that’s already missed if you’re patient enough.

    Awesome! Speaking of buttons, on your 4-slot do you use standard horizontal Happ buttons, or the vertically oriented Happ Ultimates? I much prefer the Ultimates, because they play worlds better than your standard variety.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  5 лет назад

      I only have the standard Happ pushbuttons on the cabinet. What are the features of the ultimates?

    • @slbvideoarchive
      @slbvideoarchive 5 лет назад

      @@ScarletSprites The Ultimate's were the stock buttons used by Koam when they built their cabinets. In my experience they are superior in every way to the horizontal style most people associate with concave buttons. The micro switches are stacked vertically inside the button and are held in with a Phillips screw so the method of actuation is completely different. A lot of the negatives that you hear regarding the horizontal types has to do with how much play the button has when pressing on them, and the fact that they tend to bottom out when pressed (with a metal control panel they tend to "ring" quite a bit too, which I am sure you have noticed). The Ultimates feel much more substantial in the way feel, almost like a high end mechanical keyboard. When I retrofitted my SFII cabinet, they felt 100% correct for the game, whereas the standard buttons felt quite a bit off from what I remember playing with in the early 90's. They are more expensive, (about 3 dollars each) but they are the best non Japanese style buttons I have come across.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  5 лет назад

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  5 лет назад

      Most MVS panels use the longer pushbuttons, so unfortunately a 1:1 swap probably wouldn’t work in most cases. The Seimitsu buttons I used for this were just a few bucks each and are the same used on my candy cabs.

    • @VaughnJogVlog

    Hi, great video as always. I have modded one of my AES sticks in a similar fashion and used a stiff large gauge copper wire as the ground, which helped to hold the buttons in position to stop the rocking issue that Todd mentioned. The newer buttons must have a slightly smaller rim than the old style as you don't seem to have that issue.
    If you get a moment please check out my video of a custom built two player AES stick, the video is shot on my phone but could still be of interest to you. Thanks.

    Better use a good Arcade Stick with Seimitsu Parts and buy a Brook PS3/PS4 to Neo Geo Converter... I would go with a Madcatz Brawl or Street Fighter 4 SE PS3 Stick and just put Sanwa or Seimitsu Parts inside. Changed the artworks to a car cabone 3D foil, too... The Brawl stock artwork is ugly ^^
