this is great! I have Muscular Dystrophy and I have to use a power wheelchair all the time. It looks like this could help me walk again. Please let me know when you come out with these I am very interested. I think it is great you are developing something for the disabled like me. Some healthy people never consider the needs of the less fortunate because they are so self absorbed and make such inconsiderate remarks as some have done here. Thank you Honda for the innovative technology!!!
Same here, Emery-Dreifuss MD and i think this will really help me! But damn.. it`s almost 2025 and still not released!?? It`s like somebody is stopping these projects intentionally 😡
this is great. I know lots of people with poor knees and they have difficulty walking. and for all of you who say it'll hurt you balls, it's got a comfy looking seat thats built like a bicycle. so as long as you don't sit on anything important your good to go. I'd like to see someone who has difficulty walking use this though
Sad to see such asinine comments. It's amazing that this tech is being developed. It will be able to help elderly, people with spina bifida, car accident victims, etc. I'm confident that people who cannot walk would be fine with the design if gave them mobility. And I'm sure the design will continue to modify and become less conspicuous. Way to go Honda! Keep up the great work.
It may be a pain for some, but for those who have limited coordination of their legs, it may turn out to be the perfect safety device so we can resume walking. The support should keep us from falling and breaking bones if our leg suddenly doesn't respond correctly when we try to make it move. For those with permanent nerve damage, that for safety sake, has forced us into a wheelchair, this could be a real blessing.
For those with weak leg muscles because of injury or disease this device would be of tremendous help to them. Though a two hour run time would be a limiting factor.
Well said, I will pray for your wife. My late sister prayed for me when I was in a diagnosed permanently vegetative coma and I even overcame the paralysis and loss of speech. That was 31 years ago.
Good idea, for people with handicap. But generally, we dont need walk assistants or things like segways or al this stuff which makes walking redundant. People worldwide move too less and are getting sick.
@imreallyjin the point is that it distributes the force... its much more comfortable to sit than to stand, and to lie than to sit, because the weight of your body is distributed accross a larger plane; from the bottom of your feet, to your whole thighs and butt, and from that to the entire back surface area of your body.
It could definitely be usefull for factory workers and soldiers, anyone of the sort that would need to stand, walk, or run for long distances or time periods. Mainly though, this would be invaluable to the elderly and physically impaired. If you have ever known someone in this situation, you would know they would give almost anything to regain some independence and mobility. It would be a dream come true for that segment of society.
This is useful not only for factory environments but for rehabilitation for people to walk again, elderly people who don't want to use walkers and to help them stay active, and for people who spend a lot of time standing at work.
the military has these in development also, for basically the thing is the packs soilders carry are super heavy, it enables more freedom and strength, they have even adapted these for arm use also :)
I agree with you. I have osteoarthritis of the knees, and it would help me at those times when my knees feel weak, and my muscles are tired. I believe it would be good for a few hours a day, when walking gets difficult. I'm trying to get away from having knee implants...
this is great...it starts as entertainment or comfort but it could turn into something that would help lots of ppl with previous muscle or tissue damage on their legs and for ppl with bone movility illness...it could become something great.
@bishouji used potentially in the army for soldiers that have to travel great distances by foot... there are a huge amount of uses other than what you think
I am 78 years old and believe that this could greatly help me through my daily routine which is becoming progressively harder as time goes on. By the way when are they going to increase the font size on youtube? I can hardly read it anymore. God damn cataracts
But this could easily help to extend the life of those muscles, assuming you don't go all out and use it as 'regular daily use' thereby deteriorating your muscles. This would reduce lifelong strain on the muscles and could assist in the reduction of serious chronic back problems. Though I agree, not a necessity.
i think its useful for OLD people or if we need to walk long distance.. its function is just like the normal steering wheel and the powered steering wheel, we can use both but much better with the powered assist one.
Patients with spinal cord injury and other neuromuscular disorders will benefit in the future. Perhaps a rehab device too to stimulate walking. The financial cost of falls and deep vein thrombosis may be decreased with a device like this. In surgery all patients have a device that sqeezes the legs intermittently to promote blood flow, this device is not so far fetched.
@Tropetre I am only 34 with sever arthritis and foot problems I can see this being a miracle device for me when I get older. I have a feeling I'll probably need it by age 50. My father uses a scooter but this is so much better because you get range of motion and do not stay sedentary. It looks like they still need to do quite a bit as far as looks and comfort though. I think 10 years in the future is more realistic expectation for something that is more user friendly as well as cost effective.
I dont think its for regular people Jimbo. I think it has more potential uses for say the military as soldiers can carry more stuff through rough terrain and for longer distances or say for handycapped folks or say to take your grandma on a nice hike of the Grand Canyon.
hmm sounds like 1/2 of a robot suit (a suit that basically suports your, and its own weight and allows for movement while you are in it, used to improve your carying and lifting capacity.) also would allow you to move faster and longer increasing performance efficiency. at some point i expect a total suit to replace bulkier fork lifts for many jobs (though not all)
unless it enabled you to do something like carry a grand piano to a different part of the house... of course, if you didn't have strength assisted robotic arms, there would have to be a little grip or shelf on the seat portion so you could balance the piano on it.
I personally wouldn't suggest people who are physically able to use this as a regular basis, since using this walking assist device means that your leg muscles are putting out less effort, so wouldn't your leg muscles shrink? I'm not a pro in science, but I'm just wondering :)
It sticks out too far the legs need to be more uniform with the human body, the seat needs to go up to the waste line and a belt attached to stop it moving around to prevent crotch pain, it also needs to support the whole of the hip section. One other thing what would happen if one of the legs near the top snapped, where would the leg end up, directly into the groin of the person wearing it, so some kind of protection is needed for potential structural failure.
@chelseaallday1 This technology is probably not meant for the casual walker... you saw those work men lifting those heavy objects...its meant to help with work and handicap people.
Genius, I just hope you don't end up with a mince like I get after a long bike-ride. I don't know how useful for with the elderly, it still seems too unstable but definitely for those who have sustained major injuries to their legs.
how sir? It helps those who cant walk due to knee injuries and bad legs go outside and live rather then stay inside all day and rot their life away doing so. Yes it looks weird, but you gotta start somewhere. Turning us into robots would be to reject our natural legs and replace them entirely, this only helps the legs, it gives you no other advantage except to walk better
@donsprad I have MD too, I kind of wonder how it would work for people with conditions like ours! All the people trying it seem pretty able to walk without help anyway. I'm not in a power wheelchair, but I could see myself having trouble with this anyway. Of course, I've always wanted a pair of robotic legs to help with walking and standing
What if you have already lost your muscles due to an illness? Have you heard of Inclusion Body Myositis? I think this would be invaluable for IBM patients. Is it available for sale yet and how much would it cost?
Actually, for people like my mom and myself, who's legs don't work quite right, this would be a godsend. It isn't because we're fat, our problems lie in the fact our knees are twisted by genetics. This would really help people like us who can't walk for long periods of time because of back and leg problems.
@1953dan it could b great for elderly people needing to go to a doctors appointment ot just going to the store, where the 2 hour time wouldn't b too bad
Hi, I was affected by Polio when I was nearly 5-6 years old. About three years ago I've had surgery on my legs to make them strengthen. Though Doctors had told me that strengthening my legs will not make me walk as they'll be too weak. Now my legs are weak. However, I can stand holding on to something stabled and having part of my weight on it. I can take two to three steps before I start running out of breath. My question is, is there something know of to help me walk and stay stabled/not fall?
Can you just see the conversation in the brainstorming room? DEVELOPER: Well, we've got this cool robot that can walk, what do we do with it? WORKER WALKS IN: oh, man, I just hate walking, it is way too much work. It can't be healthy! DEVELOPER: Hmmm...
5star invention.this would def help elderly or even those factory workers that are on there feet 10 to 14 hours shifts or sometimes longer! to be able to spend more time with kids, do more because of walk assist device!
why dont you ask honda to let you test one, and also have it modified with a back to it so it could support your back as well. if it happens send a vid!
This can be a great assistant device for people with disabilites and older people who have problems on their leg joints.
this is great! I have Muscular Dystrophy and I have to use a power wheelchair all the time. It looks like this could help me walk again. Please let me know when you come out with these I am very interested. I think it is great you are developing something for the disabled like me. I think this is absolutely brilliant. My grandmother has terrible trouble walking and i wish this was available for her.
this is great. I know lots of people with poor knees and they have difficulty walking. and for all of you who say it'll hurt you balls, it's got a comfy looking seat thats built like a bicycle. so as long as you don't sit on anything important your good to go. can it help polio victims walk? try me as model i'm very much willing ... tony damasco philippines

@@pavugudpr.ramesh2547 where can get honda walking assist device and how much its cost
Lmao.. Literally exactly my first impression
so it's useable for at least 50% of the population
good enough
Well said, I will pray for your wife. My late sister prayed for me when I was in a diagnosed permanently vegetative coma and I even overcame the paralysis and loss of speech. That was 31 years ago.

True
peter schiller ever since tech boom, all we ever create are things to make our lives easier. not always good though.
I think the elderly need this, that's about it.
It`s almost 2025 and still not released to the public??? 😯
So, uh... what happened to this?
Hahahaha. I'm just about to ask the same thing.
@imreallyjin the point is that it distributes the force... its much more comfortable to sit than to stand, and to lie than to sit, because the weight of your body is distributed accross a larger plane; from the bottom of your feet, to your whole thighs and butt, and from that to the entire back surface area of your body.
Post Leg-Day assistive device.
I know many people who would benefit from this enormously. Way to go Japan, the Mecca of robotics and innovation.
Does it have a vtec?!
Probably
It could definitely be usefull for factory workers and soldiers, anyone of the sort that would need to stand, walk, or run for long distances or time periods. Seems like this would be murder to the junk...
This is useful not only for factory environments but for rehabilitation for people to walk again, elderly people who don't want to use walkers and to help them stay active, and for people who spend a lot of time standing at work.
looks too much like a bicycle seat to me-hard on the private parts hmm.
Yes
I have a bad back and I see this as a most positive aid for my condition.
Next Invention would be the human Shitter cause people find it so hard to shit these days !!
something portable I can wear in the mosh pit
This is a great idea, especially for someone who has trouble walking on their own.
I could see this use for most people that are ither injured or seniors. It will really help them!
my groin hurts just looking at it, but I'm glad to see some useful progress in assisting those who can't walk.
We'll probably need this since we'll be working well into our 80s.
the military has these in development also, for basically the thing is the packs soilders carry are super heavy, it enables more freedom and strength, they have even adapted these for arm use also :)

It is a GREAT idea, but the design of this unit it the MAJOR handy cap for this product.
This would revolutionize farm work involving stooping and squatting.
@bishouji used potentially in the army for soldiers that have to travel great distances by foot... there are a huge amount of uses other than what you think

It's probably made for factory use. As crouching halfway to put it a part or such can ruin your knees.
@Tropetre I am only 34 with sever arthritis and foot problems I can see this being a miracle device for me when I get older. I have a feeling I'll probably need it by age 50. this could be significant for ppl with leg injuries or have trouble walking!
you can also use it for soldiers that carry a lot, or other professions its just the battary time needs be atleast 12-24 hours,
Gracias por subir el vídeo informativo.. gran aporte a la ciencia y a los discapacitados... saludos desde Chile..
Would be nice to have some stats. And demonstration of the relative strength.
When it will be made available. We need one.
wow, this is amazing! this'll help so many people!
they should design it so it doesn't LOOK so uncomfortable, but I like that you can put it on quickly.
This + Jumping optimization= Awesome.

@Tropetre And leaving aside that not all people on a wheelchairs have lost complete use of their legs.
When they get the heavy duty titanium alloy models maybe.
@Ronasaelable it would help older people walk....also could help with people recovering from surgery
It would be embarrassing to walk around with one of these... but I could see it being useful for certain people like factory workers or seniors.
When this is available? Old parent needs this now
Thanks for your good wishes.
I personally wouldn't suggest people who are physically able to use this as a regular basis, since using this walking assist device means that your leg muscles are putting out less effort, so wouldn't your leg muscles shrink?
I'm not a pro in science, but I'm just wondering :)
A sack scratcher is available as an option on the SE model.
It's a timely invention - the elderly are becoming more numerous and it will help them in independent living - Great - Rene
@MaxBenedek No it's for people who would do a lot of walking, like a mailman that has to walk from house to house all day for his job.
Combine something like this with jumping stilts and you'd truly have an epic product.
if your injured or on your feet all day such as at a factory this could save yours legs... as long as you dont use it EVERYWERE it is perfectly fine.
How much is this equipment? And has it been tested on older people with extra mobility needs?
@DBSpy1 it also comes with a symbian upgrade
I wonder how much this could improve running speed/distance.
It sticks out too far the legs need to be more uniform with the human body, the seat needs to go up to the waste line and a belt attached to stop it moving around to prevent crotch pain, it also needs to support the whole of the hip section.

can this walking assist device help a spinal injury patient to walk? reply
@Clapboardstudio portal... 1 or 2? have them both right now
Where it is available what is the price ?
Wow. This could conceivably make wheel chairs obsolete. Lets get a bunch of these together for a science victory dance.
Is this available for public use and how to lease out?
Not yet Harry.

You have a point there but usually people
with those disabilities have poor balance
as well and that can be a big problem, just
a thought!
Can you just see the conversation in the brainstorming room?

@bishouji At the last of the video, i think they mainly used in those operators who need to stay the whole day during working hours. :)
are u doing an action movie again!
so. you can sit down while standing up ? THATS MADNESS!!!
Next the upgraded version in the form of heel springs and then all we need is a handheld portal device....
Is it still available?
why dont you ask honda to let you test one, and also have it modified with a back to it so it could support your back as well. if it happens send a vid!
Isn't this supposed for those with decreased motor functions ? Not for healthy people or for fun purpose.
هل يتوفر في العراق. لدي والدي بحاجة الى هذا الجهاز ؟
did you ever get any response about this?
Cool. It's like a bicycle, but with legs that move like yours.
