Advice About Advice

  • Have you ever come across contradicting advice?
You might have read a book by someone you admire and they say that if you want similar results, you should do X.
However some time later, you come across another piece of advice by someone else in a similar position. But the advice is completely opposite to the previous advice you received. They say that you should avoid X and do Y instead.
So now you have two different people, both at a level you want to achieve, telling you different things.
Let's take a look at why that is and see whose advice you should listen to.

The answer is extremely simple, different situations need different solutions. It’s not about doing one or the other, it’s about finding a balance that’s unique to each person and each situation. Therefor there isn’t really anyone who “has it all figured out”.

Also its important to note that even if they are contradicting they can be equally successful in the same scenario. People are just going to recommend the one that has done well for them

People have different temperaments, abilities, tools and situations.
So it's pretty clear not every approach will be the same.
It's like how you can beat an RPG playing as a hack and slash warrior, stealthy assassin, ranged bowman, or a magic caster, etc. Wildly different philosophies of combat, but they all get the job done regardless.
    Context matters as well.

This is similar to how every person who asked prophet Muhammad (pbuh) "what is the best deed I should do to go to paradise" got a different answer.

I really appreciate your videos. I like finding new ways to approach life.
However, it should be clarified that it's a myth that introverts say "no" because they are always shy or always have social anxiety. Plus it's also a myth that extroverts say "yes" because they can't resist social events.
Introversion and Extroversion are the ways people process life. It's not a trait like being shy or being gregarious. Introversion is when someone processes and recharges better alone or in smaller, intimate groups while extroversion is when some processes and recharges better in team settings with a lot of people.
Choosing the correct tools comes from self-awareness and reflection about which process works for you. Research all the ideas, until you feel you've found all of them, then choose the idea that connects to your processing style.
    Thank you for the video!😊

I know I tend to get frustrated when I come across very generalized advice that's sold as a "one size fits all" solution, mostly because I know how awful it is when someone tries to shove advice they're really fixated on onto people it won't benefit, then shame them for not following their advice because they believe everyone thinks/feels the exact same way they do.
I dunno, I've just seen it happen enough between people I respect and who are both intelligent and thoughtful and it makes me feel extremely frustrated and helpless that despite how smart they are they see each other as idiots. I suppose it's not really anything I can do much about - especially when they aren't people I know personally, so I shouldn't waste so much energy being distressed about it, but it's hard to just not care.

It all sound very simple if not for one important fact:
We seek advices because we don't know what to do. And if we don't know what to do, how the hell can we tell what advice work for us? Take Mike for example. it's easy for outside people to say that Mike should learn to say "yes". But if Mike know that, then he would not ask for advice in the first place, wouldn't he? Mike ask advice because he confuse about his position. Should he go out more? Or should he just stay the way he is? After all, there are many introverts whose lives turn out just fine. If that person on the internet has just openly admited that his advice may not work in Mike's situation, then how can Mike know if he should follow the advice or not?
Some of you may say: well, then just try each advice for a while and see how it work for you. That's all fine and dandy but then, how long should I try? Many advice emphasis on doing something for a long period of time. Practice make perfect after all. What if I try something for a long time and waste tons of energy and turn out it's completely not for me. What then?
