  • Simon Sinek explains what concerns him most about millennials is their growing addiction to technology and social media - for which there are currently few solutions. However, he believes in a bright future and our ability to build it together, using technology to improve our lives. Simon is best known for popularizing the concept of WHY in his first TED Talk in 2009. It is now one of the most watched talks on the internet, with over 100 million cumulative views.

I was born in the early 90's and remember the use of dial up internet, phones that had no internet, playing in the park was a blessing, your friends were kids who lived in the same neighborhood as you. You had a community that was local.

almost 3 years ago, at almost 22 years old i almost took my own life. I was abused as a kid, broken, depressed, anorexic, bulimic, suicidal. I went in & out of psych units like it was a game of tic-tac-toe. Suicide watch. I was on enough Antidepressants to kill a horse. I hated myself. I wanted out. I wanted the pain to stop. The gaslighting* to end. *(when a psycho makes a sane person question their own sanity, and thus think they themselves are the insane one).
I wanted power. I got into witchcraft. I thought it would give me the identity i wanted, to be set apart from people who hurt me. It only made me sicker. Sicker. Thats what it did to me.
The doctor said id never get well. That i would suffer severe Chronic Manic depression, and never be well, that id be stuck on antidepressants all of my life.
I would plot suicide on a daily basis, binging and purging my food as often as opening and closing a door. The pain was too real. People choked me. Assaulted me. Told me i was ugly, i felt worthless. Nothing ever got better. Then my mother died. The (1) & only soul who ever loved /emotionally supported me was removed from the earth. I was stuck living with people who broke me, ruined my identity, thus causing me to hate God. I thought God hated me, that he was just like the ones who tortured me, a family of abusers, who cover up all their actions with the mask of religion. I didnt know that God is on my side. I didnt know that Jesus would Love and Defend me, and fight for me and that He later would heal me, rescue me from Family. The ones who caused me pain. The ones who choked me for wearing a necklace.
I moved out after family threatened to throw all my belongings on the front yard, and have me permanently institutionalized in an insane asylum, when they were the ones who caused my mental illness via abuse.
They blamed me for the abuse they did to me.
To take my life in an insane asylum when they were the ones who made me suicidal.
Next morning i spoke with my dead moms parents who let me live with them.
I stayed on the antidepressants, prescribed. But they only made me sicker. I got deeper and deeper into witchcraft, thinking it was a solution. But it made me even more suicidal. Self hatred was inescapable.
I decided i was going to kill myself. I was going to take all my pills.
But then Jesus stepped in. I didnt die. I surrendered my life to Jesus to make me well and heal me.
The deity i blamed for me being abused wanted to heal me. He Was fighting for me and Loved me all along.
He wanted to love me. He wanted to give me His Heart.
HE LOVES ME. JESUS. LOVES. ME .
Jesus miraculously healed me - i am off all drugs and dont need them and i dont have any mental illnesses. I work a job and am totally healed , full of joy.
I’m now a born again Christian, in my 20’s who wants the entire world to know that JESUS WANTS TO HEAL YOU
    HE. LOVES. YOU.
    Nuff said.

Everyday I feel thankful for my parents who taught me how to balance my phone usage along with my life. When we were at a dinner table, phones and electronics went into my mom's purse. When it was time for bed, we left phones in the kitchen. At 21, I'm not addicted to my phone, I can go days without using it and I only ever pick it up when my mom, dad, or husband call me
Admittedly, it can be lonely because I'm not friends with people my age. They're all so busy with their phones. I remember trying to make friends in my community college classes, and they all just buried their faces harder into their phones, not one person wanted to speak, but they only spoke to each other through messages and Instagram posts. It was like that example you gave, where you're sitting with someone, trying to talk to them, and they go "Uh huh, mhm."
I don't know what the future will hold, but I know that when I have kids, I refuse to let them waste their life looking at other people's lives through a screen 24/7.

It's too bad that this video is not mandatory to show in every single school, each and every year starting in 2nd grade. The sad thing is, it most likely would not do a darn thing to curb or stop this massive addiction to social media. We, with a "refernce point" before the internet/cell phones/social media may be older, but we sure were lucky to be born when we were. We lived in an era that no one will EVER see again, and I am so glad I had a chance to live it.

I had a father that told me "pull yourself up and move forward", "things will be ok, just keep focused on what you're doing right now".
There was no heart to heart. There was no what are you thinking about right now? It sucked and I didn't even know it, it was NORMAL.
As soon as I got into a real relationship, with someone who cared about me, my perspective QUICKLY changed.
I realized I couldn't lie anymore to make myself look good, or lie about things I'm doing and get away scot free. I had to face truths, deal with real hurt, talk about things.
If only people would talk to each other in person more...they would see how healing it is. Too much judgement going on, and not enough understanding. I think all of you .. or most of you, will agree.

Many years later smartphones made it to my country and I'm here with my kids battling with social media addiction. I look back thinking how simple life was back then, there was no instant self-gratification, seeking validation from strangers on the internet. Life was great, however, I know what the problem is now It's a matter of dealing with the situation. The responsibility and power to change lies with social media users.

I've always felt I didn't put my best foot forward and was depressed about the effort I put forth. The challenge I have is wondering whether the career I fell back on is truly my passion in life, or if I just never put enough effort towards the real estate journey and convinced myself I wasn't cut out for it. After watching this video, I've deleted all social media. I felt it would be good for me personally and somehow, a girl I'm dating became defensive about it when I told her. It led me to believe that we truly are controlled by social media beyond what we tend to comprehend.

His message to me is about using all technology in a "balanced" way; it is a tool that can be helpful when used correctly; it is about leadership in schools and business and ultimately, parenting that will need to join forces in order to support our youth to find success in their futures. He is challenging each of us to lead.

Use technology for your growth like watching this 14 minutes of video that will give you string thoughts than 14 shorts or reels that just make you laugh or curious like what the hell is going on.

I totally agree, some people don't realize that social media effect their life into depression and that's really dangerous. life seems like not worth it anymore. kids shooting others with no reason.

Beyond happy my parents raised me this way. I hated it when I was little and they always said, “you’ll understand when you’re older” and I said “no I won’t”. Boy was i wrong. Thank you Mom and Dad

Yeah it's mostly like this. Even for school, older people would always talk about how they would go back to school life if they could and the kids get confused because all they want is out of school. But later the cycle repeats itself!

When you are so addicted, and cannot control your time on social media it is a problem. Life is a balance. I have control to only go on 15 min a day just to see nothing that really matters to me. I used to be on more than that. Social media is a time consumer for sure but we do have choices and can manage our time better. A lot of the time I leave my phone in another room because I don't want to be tethered to it so much. It's ridiculous. I love the old days when it stayed home and we came home and found our messages. Way better for sure. The only reason I still keep my accounts is because I am a musician and I post my guitar riffs online. I couldn't care less about what everyone else is doing. Great video by the way Simon. Love it.

This is terrifyingly accurate. One of my friends ended his life recently. Needles to say it was quite a shock..
I wish I could've helped him somehow, but I had no idea how he was actually feeling.
He was very outgoing, smart and we'll dressed guy. Looking at his social media, you'd laugh at anyone who said he wasn't happy... Even a few days before this incident, what he shares is him horse riding and enjoying the sun. And yet, there was nothing but a dark storm inside...
Please ask your loved ones how they feel. You never know when is the last time you get to see them.

you can ask the question, but will they answer the question truthfully or tell you a lie to make you stop asking the question?
Instead of sounding concerned by asking the person how they are feeling, just check in with them every so often and socialise, make them feel they belong and matter. Simply be there for them when they need you the most. I think that sense of belonging and worth is important to constantly re-enforce to one another.
