Big thanks to Mike for coming to Scotland and thanks to all those who showed up on the night. It's you who makes these kinds of events possible.

No question a superior drummer. That isn't what makes him so great though. He's the Ronald Reagan of drumming: The Great Communicator. Just an uncanny way to articulate ideas and convey them so easily.
steadypocket dont know if reagan is a good example for this, but johnston is awesome! ;)
Happy 2015 folks! Here's a little something to kickstart the new year.
I love Mike's drumming. So dynamic and his style is original.
29:10 to 30:14
I wish every drummer on earth could hear this. It’s so hard to stay motivated sometimes and not get discouraged. He summed it all up perfectly.
First time I've checked this guy out! Awesome! Inspiring, entertaining and human!
Thanks Drum Central. AND I LOVE MIKE JOHNSTON.
I'm trying to figure out that song he did with Dave Mckay with the odd time signature
Would it be totally crazy to say that Mike might be one of the best drummers on the planet. like... top 10 - 30 ish or higher
Not a single dislike! Dear youtubers, my faith is restored!
What a cool guy Mike Johnston seems to be and he seems to take everyone into more than consideration. A great spirit of progressive talent without that sense of competition. Great job. Thanks. Love the pulse by the way.
Great stuff DC. Mike Johnston is a superb drummer. I'm about 12 years into my journey and these clinics only serve to inspire me to continue.
1:04:00 Gavin Harrison plays 5/8 like that and he calls it an "override", to create a rythmic ilusion.
+roizer roizerr cool! althought I like vinnie a lot, I'm not really into his stuff, good to know!
Outstanding Humanitarian and ambassador for all of us drummers!!!!
Most AMAZING drummer out there in my opinion. He can literally play ANYTHING! God is with him every step of the way. :) god bless you mike .
He is so spot on. Guys go to drum clinics to see drum porn! That was me for sure when I was young. Not realistic though.
Eine fantastische Clinic mit Mike Johnston! UNBEDING ANSEHEN!! LG, Jürgen
Gosh. I love how he makes everything his own. It's so original and it's an awesome way to express yourself while doing that. We all have different views on life, and this is a great way to have your own interpretations.
How rare to hear a great player who speaks as well as he plays. When we take the ego out of the equation, our creativity is free to evolve. So inspired by you, Mike!!
my guru on drum on you tube..fantastic solo keep it up Mr.Mike Jonhston...
Love the concepts and well thought out/explained/demonstrated they are. Can you break down the Chris Dave stutter licks there. Love that!
Absolutely awesome player, a total inspiration ;-)
This is Matt from your home town. I saw this solo and another one, and I just don't compare.
If nothing else, what you said right at the beginning was true wisdom! I give you props for that!
This is a really great video! Thank you very much for posting, Mike is such an inspirational teacher.
Websauce Drums You're welcome. Mike was great and such a nice guy. Keep an eye out for some more cool stuff coming....this is just the beginning :-)
Great drummer and teacher 👍🏾👍🏾
I like the way he simplifies the time signatures. I definitely see how thinking his way is beneficial, but I also have to say that hearing his explanation isn't a magical key that allows you to just learn immediately. It's like any other part of drumming, or really any ability for that matter. Even when you have this understanding, you still need to spend time practicing your implementation of the concept in order to improve.
Yes, you gotta need to practice. But his style of teaching things makes me instantly want to go to my drumkit and practice. I think that is the great thing he does. Of course his drumming is amazing too ;)
Sou muito fã do Mike jonhston toca muito 👍👏👏🇧🇷
not usually into drum solos but this is ultra creative. nice
great drummer, great instructor. This guy knows his stuff and is also very motivational, not unlike a young Dom Famularo. And no I don't take lessons with him or have any weird motive
How do you do the trick on the rack tom with your finger? How do you get it to sound like that? I've tried it but it doesn't always work. Please help!
This guy is truely amazing
Thanks, Mike, for your words of wisdom. Watching this was pretty timely as I was almost about to quit drumming for a group who kept missing their previous drummer and his drumming style. I felt like my effort was not enough to be able to get their thumbs up. Kudos!
i learned very much of this
what i like about him is that he doesn't bs you into thinking you will get good in 2 days, he tells you you will suck but practice and it will get better.
Able to do soooo much with so little.
oh man this was amazing! I absolutely feel this fear of odd time signatures!!!!
Joe Vargas I get you dude! Playing odd times at the start freaked me out!
Joe Vargas I been playing 40 yrs Joe and odd sods still scare the crap out of me! You just have to breath deep and relax then it will come easy.
12:30 i hear him doing some Gregg Bissionette like solo grooves. Except he's doing the open/close step hi-hat.
Thank you. I have never enjoyed you so much as did with your solo. Reminiscent of big band era at its very best.
Thanks for directing me here he is amazing
To me his drum solo at the beginning of his tutorial lesson has to be one of the best solo I have ever heard....Love his style of drumming.
Hello,
06:05 06:09
Are these flams ?
Tasteful playing. I dig this, really.
where can I get that 5/4 track that starts at around 24:11?? It sounds so good!!!
Luke Campbell Just from his website. This it's called 5/4 ballad
great concepts! and his playing is awesome btw...
yes!
Creat playing & good vibrations combined :) Bravo!
As with most of us here ..... back to the drawing board 😳
Great teach Mike ❤ya
the song at 24:10 sounds like Baroness - Chlorine & Wine
Love the 58:00 lick bit
This is awesome!
I’m so inspired!Thanks Mike.
Awesome drums Lessons Mike J👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I gotta watch all the drum clinic videos
Superb!
Das ist guut bitte
Who is the "Dave" that he followed?
Billy Leva It's Dave Major that Mike's referring to, one of our Lick Of The Week instructors.
One of my top 2 greatest nights of my life.
Ben White What was the other ;-)
definitely not when I got to drum for Steel Panther, that's for sure..! ;)
what's the time signature of the track that he played in the begining
daily chops seems to be in 7; probably 7/4
Hes funny too :)
You had me at...tat.
Love that riff around the 1:10:35 mark. What exactly is that there?
It's a flam rudiement, not sure which one. Sounds like a couple different ones. If anything it's flam taps.
Johnny Hurley
Very Tony-esque!
tdrum21 very much so
don't talk, just play! 😝
nah man. let him talk and hear what he is talkin' about. I learned more from him than from anybody in .. lets say the last 2 years - and I am guitarist/composer. this dude is deep and yeah probably 90% of what he says might be common for you, but what counts are the 10% that are not.
The story Mike tells at 33:00 is somewhat exaggerated. He did drop his stick, but he had a spare one right next to him. Check out the exact story here: /watch?v=Bmbic3uQGso
if mike meant this drum clinic with thomas lang: /watch?v=Bmbic3uQGso, than his story was not correct, cause he had a stick bag and there was no thomas which gave the stick back... XD and listen what he says at 6:17..
Yes, that story changed a bit.
+archi baldikowski I don't think it was that clinic, where it was in a school auditorium, it was way before that clinic.
