  • This Video explains how the Throttle Position Sensor also known as TPS and the Idle Air Control Valve ( IAC ) Work.
    On the previous 2 Videos I explained how the Fuel is delivered to the Fuel Injectors by the Fuel Pump, I also explained the parts involved to make that happen.
    This video is a continuation of the previous 2 to show how the TPS and IAC Valve affect how much Fuel Is delivered by the Fuel Injectors depending on the Engine Speed, from Idle to Full Throttle.
    It is also mentioned how different conditions affect the Idle of a vehicle like placing the Automatic Transmission in Gear or turning the AC on.

    I had a GT-40 Intake installed on my 1992 Mustang 5.0
    Just about immediately I had a high Idle situation that I could not back down. Great ! All that I spent for nothing !
    I was about to give up and have it all put back on the car. I watched this video and got a VERY clear understand of how these things work. One last time I tried to fix it. I cleaned the IAIC valve with T.B. cleaner like you said ! NO GOOD ! Still high Idle. Then I noticed that the shop installed the IACV upside down. I reversed it. PROBLEM SOLVED !
    THANK YOU ! YOU SAVED ME !

    Excellent. Answered my questions. We were getting irregular idle could not find an IAC on this KIA. You explained why. It is built into the TB motor and TPS (which Kia calls the ETC--Electronic Throttle Controller). Opening that VW TPS cover showed it all. KIA uses the same system as VW. We replaced the TPS and it solved the problem.

    Makes SO much sense now! THANK YOU! Big difference between repairs for old and new too. Our '03 S10 IAC fix $30. Our 19" Mercedes - fix $760. OUCH! HATE HAVING TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Excellent video. I have a 2002 Toyota Camry 3.0 liter engine (1MZ-FE) with a throttle body that is not controlled by a cable. Occasionally it stalls at idle when I am driving. When I turn the engine off for a little while (20 minutes or so) then turn it back on the problem goes away. I cleaned the throttle body and the mass air flow sensor but still have the problem. There is no check engine light and no codes. Any suggestions you can offer me to check? I bought this car when it was new and still love it.

    @HOWSTUFFINMYCARWORKS I have a 95 Hardbody with Ka24e. Would you be able to explain how to reset the Throttle Stop screw. The one that is never supposed to be touched and pre set by factory? A blown engine I bought and rebuild had issues with the pedal hanging up. And the problem was throttle stop screw being completely back out. My truck has been under powered, bad gas. I have made adjustments recently and when its cold its running beautifully and feels right, but after normal temp up, take off and gear shifting has a hesitant effect. Like a bog then fuel kicks in and takes off. My fuel pressure is staying at 40 psi which is supposed to drop to like 33 or 34 after normal temps I believe. I would like to know also on IACV idle screw, say its turned to the right completely off, what should be the default number of turns when opening that idle screw up.
    Thanks for video!

    I have 02 Nissan Frontier 2.4L with 210k miles, project truck. I' have a pesky P0302 that will not go away. I almost replaced everything except PTS and IAC valve. If idling at 700rpm and put it on drive, my rpm drop to below 500. Is my IAC bad? The coil reads 11 ohms, I disconnected it, run engine, reconnected and rpm changes. Any suggestion?

    Excellent descriptions. Have a constantly changing hot idle speed in my 88 S10. Occasionally normal, but usually high or takes a long time coming down.
    I think tomorrow is the day to replace the IAC valve. It might even be OEM of the 1988 era.

  • @macknumber9

    Do you happen to know the signals it sends? Is it 12v and then it drops 1 volt all the way down to like 5v? Is it variable like that to change how open the valve is?
    Also when I first start my car it idles high like it should (1200 to 1500) and immediately drops like it should slowly but as it's doing that I get some surging and shaking (rough idle)....do you think that could be a faulty IAC solenoid? Maybe I should check the resistance or check the incoming voltage from the ECU or possibly even check to make sure the throttle position sensor is sending the right info...

    I just replaced the icv on my 87 s10 blazer. I am curious to know how the plunger on this valve moves. Is there a motor inside the device that spins the plunger to different positions from open at start up to completely closed under acceleration? I noticed that you can not depress the plunger of the valve if you are holding it in your hand. I am familiar with an egr valve that opens and closes under the effect of a magnetic solenoid and at first I thought that was the mechanism behind the icd, but apparently it is more sophisticated.

    But on the Toyota the iac twists to open, rather than depresses.
    I just cleaned mine out on my old Lexus rx300, and had a question: As I cleaned it I twisted it obviously out of the position it was in when I removed it. Cause it twists a full 360 degrees, and you have to turn it to clean off the carbon build up. There’s no spring or anything to set it at a specific location, so when I turn it, it just stays where I left it last. So will the ecu automatically turn it to re-set it to where it needs to be? I know that’s the whole point of the iac, I’m just wondering if it is supposed to be at any specific setting when I reinstalled it?

    can u plz tell me what my problem could be. 2005 nissan frontier, in gear, sitting at stop sign, at idle, foot on brake. The engine rpm vlimb very fast to almost redline, and rear tires broke loose and started chirping, I put in park and turned off key, I restarted it and put it in gear and drove home, I pulled the throttle body and it was very dirty I clead the butterfly and insde the throttle body. my truck is drive by wire, I dont think it was the acclerator pedal, because I was at idle. what do you think caused my problem. I checked codes, and only got an evaporative emmisions code.

    • @randy1ization
      @randy1ization 6 лет назад

      at first I was thinking that it must be something in that drive by wire accelerator pedal, but because I was sitting at idle, in gear, now im wondering if something went haywire with the idle control , as before I was thinking abt it as an accellerator malfunction, rather than an idle malfunction. it scared me because this never has happened before. I am afraid to let my wife drive the truck now. it wasnt like a high idle, it was like VERY HIGH, like the engine would have blown if I didnt shut it off.

    Need help!...I replaced my IACV due to surging idle. After replacement the engine cranked up to 4000 rpms....I had to tap on the brake to get it back down...then I test drove it and the car wouldn't DEcelerate when I took my foot off the gas...had to ride the brake home......I switched back to the old one and everything went back to normal.....what could be going on?

    • @PepeDizon-qy7xv
      @PepeDizon-qy7xv 11 месяцев назад

      to the ecu. ecu needs current engine rpm, engine coolant temperature, map/maf data, tps data, ac signal to control voltage to iacv

    My Expedition only dies in reverse or drive when it reaches normal temperature after I have driven long or short drive.After the engine cool off It will start and drive with no problem even on any stops.Only if I park and try to start it over again its been like that for months.So I never bother to fix the problem I could still go from Point A to B.

    This is so easy to understand now. Why the hell we can't use this same method to go to Mars and beyond.. Using just Gasoline would be cheaper and we could store and refuel big gasoline tanks in geosynchronous orbit for our rockets to Mars and even Neptune. Maybe cost $100 Million or less.
