    In this video I begin diagnosing a surging idle in my 1984 533i. The early 533i, 633csi and 733i have a separate idle control module or ICM located in the glove box above the ECU (engine control unit). These commonly fail or burn out causing irregular idle and running conditions when they can no longer send proper signal to the idle control valve. The idle control valves also commonly fail or get dirty in these cars, requiring cleaning or replacement. In this video I walk you through the steps I take to diagnose the function of the idle control valve or ICV. #e28 #e30 #bmwclassic
    The early cars share the 13411286134 Programa idle module and the 13411709898 idle control valve. These are also found on the 528e, 325e and 325es ETA models.

    Hi Rich, Impressive methodical approach!
    a professional auto electrician couldn’t have done the troubleshooting any better. I’m sure you found the culprit... episode 2, will no doubt confirm this is the problem.
    Cheers!

      Thanks Philip, hope you are well. I received some help and tips from the mye28.com gurus on this one. Can't believe I went this many years without a multimeter, it was time to learn to use it!

    Something I found is that if it's sometimes idling just above 1500 RPM (not necessarily surging) it's likely the Throttle position sensor. If it gets unplugged, it thinks the car isn't idling and defaults to about 1600 RPM. I gave my connector a wiggle and pushed it in a bit and the idle went right the way down to about 900.
    Now I've noticed it's surging a little bit, but not as bad as yours is. I'll try diagnosing the ICV at some point.

      Thanks for that ours is idling at 1800. I wonder if it's the tps instead of idle control.

    Your idle control valve looks completely different than mine, or others I've seen on these cars. Is it original BMW?

    • @BIMMERZEITT
      @BIMMERZEITT  3 года назад

      Yes it is original BMW, it’s only found in the 533i, 633i and 733i - early model cars. Later versions have an aluminum body.

    I replaced the ICU, tested the leads, replaced the IC module and still no luck
