I just purchased a 1990 325i Cabrio. Your videos have helped a ton! The rockers were spaced on my vehicle so it gave it a little lope. But I'm going to be cleaning my ICV tomorrow to see if I can smooth it out a bit! Thanks again Dan!
I cleaned mine at least 10x over 10 yrs and it's always been fine for another year. Finally forked up the cash for a new ICV. Going to install it tomorrow and I appreciate the tip about the hose. I'll clean that out too so the new ICV doesn't get gunked too quickly. Thanks!
I have an 88 cabrio, lowered black, I also sell cars and work on mine when I can figure out how. I have to say you present every thing so well, keep these going man, you have a gift.
+E30Source Dude I got an old 5 series not to long ago as my first project car. You're teaching me so much about these engines, and these kinds of car in general. Thanks man I really appreciate it.
Just going to say, I have an eta that was sitting for 2, maybe 3 years. Soaking the icv overnight in : gasoline, brake cleaner, carb cleaner and the best degreaser I could find, all failed to get the engine to idle steady. Got some mean green kitchen cleaner (mother knows best) and the shit was literally coming out in chunks when I was spraying it into the icv. Left it overnight, shook it up in the morning, and poured out a black gooey mess. Couple more times and it was spotless inside. Highly recommended for anyone still having troubles after using carb cleaner as carb cleaner has worked for me in the past aswell, just not this time. On a side note, don't use wood glue on a car please. Besides making you look bad, it is not designed to work as a sealant. It gets very hard and brittle, gasket maker must remain somewhat flexible when set to do its job properly under heat, vibration etc.
So I used EGR - same stuff. And it might be my imagination but it seems my engine idles smoother now. It used to jot between 750-780 RPM when idle but now it stays stable at 750. Very easy fix.
Nice video man ! I have a '84 633 CSI that idles from 1000-2000 rpms after it reaches 160F temp . I cleaned the ICV but didn't change . It is def temp related . idles fine until it reaches 160 F or so. Thanks in advance
Thanks for your videos man, they're truly helpful. Are you planning to do a chapter about injectors cleaning/replacement? I have a 316i e30 m40 engine and some operations are slightly different but your stuff is worth seeing anyways
My car upon cold start seems to rev between 700 and 1100RPM... It'll do this for a few minutes then tame itself and sit around 700-800RPM. Think this might be the ICV?
Hi thanks for your video and help my friend, I have a 1987 325i same engine over 20 years and it been parked like 6 years inside, but I think it use lots of gas compare to years before, engine & idle and sound perfect but while I'm driving I can see gas gage is coming down, do you have any suggestions pleas Thanks again
What sort of Carb cleaner should I use? Is it fine to leave it overnight in carb cleaner? I was told by a guy working at a auto store to use MAF cleaner instead of regular carb cleaner.
Hey, does the ICV make a faint whistling sound when car is running? I'm noticing a slight pressurized whistling sound coming from the ICV area... wondering if it's the spinning component in the inside of it, or maybe a leak in one of the attaching hoses... Any insight/help is appreciated. Thx.
After changing my alternator and spark plugs, 40 miles into the drive the car looses all function and there isnt any throttle response whenever i hit the gas pedal and all the dash lights came on. When I try to start the car it is hesitant to start and whenever it does start, 1 minute into idleing the car shutters off. Could the icv be the problem?
+Eddie Rodriguez Any car idles higher when cold. As for your case, try adjusting the flathead screw on the idle control valve on top of the valve cover. Tightening increases idle speed and loosening decreases idle speed.
ok will do. its not a normal high idle im talking about a 2000 and higher idle when its below freezing outside. i dont want to damage the motor because it will remain like that for around 5 minutes
hey dude, good vid, usefull! (Y) i wana ask you, i got M20B27 eta engine, i have high A/F ratio plus my idle is very high arround 2000 RPm and above any suggestions?
Check if you have any broken intake lines and or the boot is broken. You may have a bad ICV and thats why it high idles. Check out the forums specific to this car and I'm sure you'll get the right answer www.r3vlimited.com/board/index.php
hey man, your videos are always great! I have an 87 325e and it revs up and down from like 1000-2000rpms when I'm in neutral, park, or in traffic stop and go...could this be an issue?
My 91 325i turns off immediately after turning it on and also backfires a lot. We took it to a mechanic but he couldn't find the problem. Do you have an Idea of what it could be?
hey man, my 89 325i is idle up and down usually when I'm stopped for a period of time, and check engine light comes on when I stop. Would this fix my problem?
If you want to make a big difference in keeping the throttlebody/icv/ etc clean, remove the valve cover breather hose! Replace the hose with a valve cover breather filter, and put a cap on the throttlebody! It'll keep the engine from sucking in excess oil when driving "spiritedly." Lol. I was having to add a quart of oil every 2-3weeks, thought maybe it was piston rings. Wrong. Stupid valve cover breather hose!
the valve cover breather is connected to the intake side of the throttle body, so it would in no way affect the icv. if you're adding oil ever 2-3 weeks then you have other problems, probably worn piston rings
I am aware that the valve cover breather is on the "front" of the throttle body, but if you read my whole comment you would have read that by installing a valve cover breather filter will cut back on a lot of oil suction period. Like i said, i drive "spiritedly" lol. My normal operating range is 3-5000rpm. Lol made a big difference on my e28.
my e34 with an m20 engine ran 3k rpms at 70mph and was frequently in the high rpm range. it did not use any oil in between oil changes and i had no issues with oil on my throttle body. a properly running engine should have no issues with the factory crank breather.
My E28 runs great! The compression is still in the 130's! 0Lol idk why my engine sucks oil "so much". (my old truck I had to add a qt a week- relatively speaking). I literally had oil dripping out of my cai until i put my valve cover breather filter. Maybe im wrong and/or misdiagnosing. Lol
you could possibly have a crankcase gasket leak (oil pan gasket, front main, rear main, head gasket, valve cover gasket, cam seal, or dip stick gasket). any of those could cause too much airflow into the crankcase and thus take with it an excessive amount of oil/oil vapor into the throttle body.
im having some issues with my 87 325e cutting out when im stepping on the throttle idlles weird sometimes but it clears out of it but right after is back to cutting out if you have any advise please let me know ive been dumping endless amounts of money into various part Fuel pump, fuel filter, throttle position sensor, and thier are no air leaks?
Dan Cronin i havent tried a new ignition coil but ive cleaned the terminals for it and after being driven for awhile the iginition coil doesnt over heat. i cleaned my maf and right after i started it bogged out for about a block, then came out of it and has ran better ever since then!,but it still has the same issue with my idle after being warmed up it will come up to 1500 rpm to 1000 rpms repeatedly? car still seems to not have as much power as it should? note the only things i havent replaced is the ignition, iginition coil, 02 sensor, maf, and distributor? No air leaks Show less
I didn't mean m comment in a bashing way ur a smart guy u figured out a lot on it own and urs videos are well.made but yeah wood rtv is really cheap.and wood glue is designednto.soak into the woods as wood I poris and can let the.glue soak bonding the materials together not good.for use in water or heat or metal in anyway because metal won't absorb it and wood glue is not flexible but considering were migivorung with what u had that is cleaver but I posted to just say it's not the right thing.in case u didn't know
can that angle piece that is connected to the idle control valve to the engine cause issues? mine has no seal but doesn't move by it self only if i push it out. my car idle bad and wants to stall at time.
+Dan Cronin sealed it but the problem was still there. cleaned my MAF and the fixed the wanting to stall issue. still have a hard time turning thr car sometimes. might be a fuel filter or maybe pump.
hey bro, i need help with MPGs man... my OBC says im running 15.5 average mpg... :C its killing me i have no idea what it is... please let me know if you have any ideas.
Ahmad Soughar Reset the trip meter odometer once you fill up. Then drive till you are almost out of gas and see how many miles you went. I never trust OBC estimations. Let me know how it goes.
+E30Source Hi! i have the same issue...plus a nasty long cranking start....(strong crank but it chokes/hesitates after started) along wwith rpm drops(choking) after throttle release (same as Elie's case) what do you think?
+E30Source not that i know of.....however, i'm not sure if it's my fuel pump...the car has really good torque in all rpms (well kinda) it just does the nasty idle within 1-2 mins of starting the car(plus the long start) otherwise the car drives great. (still need to do the valve adjust from your other video tho)
Hello bro, im shamsul,my e30 have same problem like conner robert, wont idle but will shut off "WHEN" i ON air condition?why RPM drop and shut off....what should i do???? (320i)
i already check the belt everthing it ok and awesome condition...actually i have a problem same like elie abbas...i already go to forum i read and look many people used M20B20 also have same problem for motornic engine. but still dont have get the asnwer to resolve that problem...
I just purchased a 1990 325i Cabrio. Your videos have helped a ton! The rockers were spaced on my vehicle so it gave it a little lope. But I'm going to be cleaning my ICV tomorrow to see if I can smooth it out a bit! Thanks again Dan!
The cool thing about the clips is if you push down the middle it releases it. I figured this out putting a new engine harness in.
Don't use wood glue on that metal on metal connection. Wood glue is an adhesive, not a sealant. RTV gasket maker, applied in a thin bead is preferred.
Wow that made a big difference, that’s a good tip thanks
Do some more videos dude.. removing the throttle body and cleaning the TPS would be ideal :)
I cleaned mine at least 10x over 10 yrs and it's always been fine for another year. Finally forked up the cash for a new ICV. Going to install it tomorrow and I appreciate the tip about the hose. I'll clean that out too so the new ICV doesn't get gunked too quickly. Thanks!
thanks a lot. i did this today, as well as changing the valve cover gasket and breather hose for my e30. idles and runs a lot smoother!
I have an 88 cabrio, lowered black, I also sell cars and work on mine when I can figure out how. I have to say you present every thing so well, keep these going man, you have a gift.
Thanks man!
Once again thank you for taking the time out to share. Awesome video :)
sacha constance No prob!
Thanks, this sure did help me out.
Thanks for posting this! Super helpful!
+E30Source
Dude I got an old 5 series not to long ago as my first project car. You're teaching me so much about these engines, and these kinds of car in general. Thanks man I really appreciate it.
+I9I9Eternal No prob!
+Dan Cronin those clips like the one on the connector can be squeezed instead of being removed
Yea I know I made a mistake hah.
+Dan Cronin just trying to help I have a 1987 325i and I really like your videos!
Thanks!!!
Very helpful fixed my problem, thanks man
No problem.
Enjoy!
thanks a lot !
great vids. one tip... the wire clips stay on the connector. just push in and then pull off, hope it helps you save time in the future
yeah what he said...
Nice video dude. I did clean it with Gasoline did work way better than the throttle cleaner.
nice easy fix thanks for sharing
Just going to say, I have an eta that was sitting for 2, maybe 3 years. Awesomeman1987 Gotcha. I worked with what I could though.
or some silicon... but wood glue will crack and go inside...
Wood glue...? Um how about rtv blue.
So I used EGR - same stuff.
And it might be my imagination but it seems my engine idles smoother now.
It used to jot between 750-780 RPM when idle but now it stays stable at 750.
Very easy fix.
Cleaning the ICV will do that. Its a common fix for idle problems and having to start with your foot on the gas.
Very helpful!!! Thanks!!
Nice video man ! I have a '84 633 CSI that idles from 1000-2000 rpms after it reaches 160F temp . I cleaned the ICV but didn't change . It is def temp related . idles fine until it reaches 160 F or so.
Thanks in advance
Long shot but any chance you remember what the fix was to your issue?
@@dohc1974 Try the Coolant Temperature Sensor.
Excellent, thank you.
great vid
Hey for future reference u might want to use a flashlight. But great video still.
Good stuff
Thank you.
Thanks for your videos man, they're truly helpful. Are you planning to do a chapter about injectors cleaning/replacement?
I have a 316i e30 m40 engine and some operations are slightly different but your stuff is worth seeing anyways
I could, I just dont have a project car right now.
Dan Cronin please man , do it . I'm restoring a e34 it has the same engine. but the inyectors cables are a big dissaster. help. sos.
Gonna try this! Good vid.
My car upon cold start seems to rev between 700 and 1100RPM... It'll do this for a few minutes then tame itself and sit around 700-800RPM. Think this might be the ICV?
***** if it seems like power is being held back or it stops at a certain rpm, try to clean your injectors or change your fuel filter.
I have a 1984 bmw e30 318i and also having same problem but my valve is diffrent from yours, what do I do to solve this problem?
Nice job and please for BMW E30 M10B18 thx
We swapped the icv and may need to swap again do they come broken? We can’t get the idle to
Be under 1
Thanks for the video! Do you videos on the fuel economy gauge problems ie the guage below the rpm meter ? Thanks
I'm haveing throttle body issues & check engine light is on, any suggestions were to get another throttle body or any help? Thank you 1991 bmw 325ic
1985 M6, any thought on a low idle, 500 rpm, please? It is stable at all temperatures.
What sort of Carb cleaner should I use? Is it fine to leave it overnight in carb cleaner? I was told by a guy working at a auto store to use MAF cleaner instead of regular carb cleaner.
Sorry, but this does not apply to all model years 1983 throughout 1991. The early models had the vacuum idle systems...
hey bro.. do you have video replacing fuel pump e30?? thanks
I have a 87 325 runs good but at random times loses power and starts puffing black smoke out the tail pipe any ideas?
Hey, does the ICV make a faint whistling sound when car is running? I'm noticing a slight pressurized whistling sound coming from the ICV area... wondering if it's the spinning component in the inside of it, or maybe a leak in one of the attaching hoses... Any insight/help is appreciated.
Thx.
My bet is the intake boot. Pretty common issue.
Also the metal hasn't worn in the rubber has shrunk due to age and dry rot.good video but those two parts are incorrect.
my 87 325is is idling super low and high sometimes
Any alternatives to carb cleaner?
You don't have to pull that metal clip off, all you have to do is press on it and pull back on the connector.
yea it kinda just popped off and I didn't want to lose the clip.
Sounds to me like an ignition coil.
my 86 its doing high and low rpm i clean it up twice and steel dioing it i squezze the hose and it sound better any suggestions please
It's the hose not the valve
i have an 87 325 and i was wondering if this might solve the notorious high idle problem that they have when they are cold?
+Eddie Rodriguez Any car idles higher when cold. As for your case, try adjusting the flathead screw on the idle control valve on top of the valve cover. Tightening increases idle speed and loosening decreases idle speed.

that a AIC valve for i engines.... e engines have a different valve
hey man, your videos are always great! I have an 87 325e and it revs up and down from like 1000-2000rpms when I'm in neutral, park, or in traffic stop and go...could this be an issue?
+luis aguirre That or the throttle body is sticking in some spots.
Same car, same problem. You ever figure out the issue?
I have an 87 325is and you probably have a vacuum leak if its ideling that poorly. Then look at the ICV, then look at the throttle body set screw
I use whatever I have on hand. Carb cleaner or WD40, whatever gets her running smoothly does the job. It ain't rocket science =D
My 91 325i turns off immediately after turning it on and also backfires a lot. We took it to a mechanic but he couldn't find the problem. Do you have an Idea of what it could be?
Timing belt
whats that ticking sound?
hey man, my 89 325i is idle up and down usually when I'm stopped for a period of time, and check engine light comes on when I stop. Would this fix my problem?

Yea I would try new injectors or test fuel pressure at the rail.
+Dan Cronin how would i check the fuel pressure on it? as far as i know it doesn't have the valve to connect the tool
The inlet line is closest to the firewall
Do you what's wrong when you turn on the lights the idle runs weird
Do you have an extremely loaded alternator? The alternator might not make enough power to supplement the sudden load on the alternator.
My 84 325e doesn't have that? Do I not have a ICV? I have a vid of it on my channel cuz I'm trying to sell it
Its on top of the valve cover. Also clean the hoses around it.

CRS in my opinion
Hey, my e30 wont idle; it just shuts off. what should I do? (1986 325es)
Conner Roberts Bad coil? Distributor? Fuel?
E30Source bad fuel? the gas in the tank did sit for a long time, but i put some new in. ill try coil and distributor
Yea inspect those first.
Hey. I have an m20b20. If i push the throttle then remove my foot then push it again, the rpm drops down like the car is choking. Any help?

crank the car and see if the belt is preventing it from moving.
