    So I did this and had an issue after lol. Don’t forget to spray lubricant like lithium grease or even motor oil back into the valve! The bearing inside needs grease so it doesn’t seize 🥲 mine seized and I had major idle issues with AC on until I lubricated it. Now it’s fine!

    Main idle valve issue symptoms:
    - Floating RPM during heating
    - Missfires on cold start during heating
    - Transmission kicks between shifting

    Hi Nathan....I am a big fan and tell all of my BMW buddies to watch your stuff.
    I have a question...Right now I am working on an 85 E30 318i and the ICV is like new and works when I hook 12volts directly to it...but the wire connector going to it only provided 11.5 volts or so... and it idles up and down....but if I hook 12 volts directly from the battery it runs and idles fine. Why is the connector only giving 11.5 volts to the ICV ?
    Thanks Dude....you're the best !

Fucked wth the throttle adaptations and would make my auto tranny limp mode for incorrect engine load being sent to EGS during shift. Threw me into limp mode. A bit late, but for anyone who finds the thread... I had secondary air code and it was the line going to the valve had cracked at the bend in the RF wheel well. The vacuum line to the valve was also seriously deteriorated and I replaced it at the same time. O2 heater code probably means the O2 heater circuit is open - in this case most likely bad pre cat 02 sensor on bank 2. Definitely related to the lean codes.

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  8 лет назад

      +David R. The knock sensors usually dont go bad so check the connection and inspect the wire for damage, clean the icv like shown in the video, and inspect the throttle body boot for cracks, the temp sensor is on side of the cylinder head toward the rear under the intake manifold, make sure its plugged in and the wires are good, if not replace the sensor which is not easy to do

      @lukemalhotra 6 лет назад

      The thing is, my car has done less than 65,000miles on it. So I don't think the Vanos is the problem. On top of that, it's a 02 model. It's probably more of a vacuum leak issue. I had the valve head gaskets and all sparkplugs changed at a BMW specialist. The throttle body is still functional. No irregular jerks or delays in throttle output. The car is running fine albeit with the rough 4min idle up to warm temperature. I'll be taking it back to the specialist next month for a possible change on my ATF pipes and reservoir.

    Question: I notice a distinctive humming noise when the key is in the "on" position. I've confirmed the noise comes from the Idle Control valve. Is this humming noise normal? Or does it indicate (as I think it might) that the valve is faulty?
    Great video! My valve stuck--when I started the car on an extremely cold day. It sounded like a jet engine. I shut the car off (not knowing the issue). Next morning I tried starting the car and it wouldn't start. Cleaned the valve (it was stuck) and it still doesn't start. Diagnostics show no codes. I've changed the crankcase, camshaft intake & exhaust position sensors so far. I've confirmed fuel pressure to the injectors. Still no start.

    • @eltoro777
      @eltoro777 3 года назад +1

      Mine hums buzzing sound with key on.2005325xi E46 m54 . idle valve making the noise. Unplugged it no more noise . peeps say it's normal. IT IS NOT. Buzzing sound means the internal solenoid is stuck... Think like a starter solenoid.. Same principle..
      It will cause all sorta problems and codes and may never throw a code for itself. Mine was fucking with throttle adaptations because the idle valve operates AT ALL TIMES.. It's what turns your idle upo for AC, for extra current draw. Mine was even causing limp mode because being stuck trying to open itd draws a lot of current trying to get unstuck. Well the automatic tranny takes a lot of current to push the shift solenoid s to shift gears.b so my car would go into transmission limp mode cause it had insufficient amperage due to the stupid ICV valve staying buzzing cause internal solenoid was stuck.
      Kicker is .. NO CODED FOR ICV, & and it passed the clicker test after I'd clean it. So JUST CAUSE THE VALVE CLACKS WHEN YOU SHAKE IT DOESN'T MEAN YOUR VALVE IS GOOD. I KNOWFROM PAIN AND EXPERIENCE. 4 MONTHS IT TOOK TO DIAG THE TRANS LIMP MODE.. FROM A STUPID ICV. FUCKING HELL MAN

      The cam sensor has either been replaced with a china sensor or the sensor is bad, someone didnt set the engine timing correctly, thats the cause of your cold start issues to im sure

    Hi Nathan I was wondering if I could get some help with bmw 01 330i, is has lean codes and misfires on cold starts I’ve replaced the disa valve the idler control valve new plugs the pvc system I’ve checked for vacuum leaks I’ve exchanged the injectors that I got from pick and pull the only thing I haven’t replaced are the o2 sensors you think it could be those that all went wrong at the same time

      Well if you still have that cam sensor light it could be out of time, does the light ever go off or has it been on since you had the car?

    • @67mustang351w
      @67mustang351w 8 лет назад

      +Nathan's DIY Garage the engine light its been on almost for 6 months today. i run the scanner and deleted but when i turn the engine on. engine light turns back on right away. and sometimes when scanner is scanning it say cant read the protocol or can't establish communication with the server something like that.

    What causes the idle to surge when the air conditioning is turned on? I have no issues with idle, but it when I turn the ac on it dips and hunts periodically. No check engine lights. Fuel economy is really good....21mpg in town......34mpg on the highway.

    • @BMWBADBOYM3
      @BMWBADBOYM3 5 лет назад +1

      Let me help you. The idle automatically goes up to compensate the load placed on the engine by engaging the A.C. if it doesn't then you have a problem.

    • @TangoCharlieAlpha
      @TangoCharlieAlpha 5 лет назад

      @@BMWBADBOYM3 Ok, I see. The thing that seems a little off is when it dips in idle before coming back up. But perhaps cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body would help?

      @@TangoCharlieAlpha What type of car are we talking about? Year model etc.
      Also make sure if you clean the MAF use the right cleaner and be very careful. You might damage it.
      Clean the throttle body with a good crab cleaner. But I doubt the throttle body causes it to misidle

    once the icv is cleaned and re-installed , does it need to be reset? i removed/cleaned mine today along with spraying all of the electrical connectors and including the MAF and now my e39 m54 520i is running like a bag of nails. im wondering if ive trashed the MAF or theres a reset needed for the icv. great vids by the way, since my e39 has started giving me trouble your vids have been great for info/learning. cheers Nathan.

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  8 лет назад

      +hectormarin95 Hello if the n62 does not have a idle air control valve, it uses the secondary air pump system for that, the n62 has alot of problems with clogging with carbon , the secondary air pump tubes, they make a kit that is really expensive to do this yourself i believe its a few hundred dollars, the dealership wants $6000 to do that job lol, i dont have a e65 or e66 here at the moment, i was trying to buy one last week but the guy sold it before i could get to it, i want to get one here to do some videos on alot of people ask me about these cars.

    Hey Nathan, I've got an occasional idle problem on my Z4 2.5. Starts fine but idle jumps from 900 to 1200 rpm, if I shut it off and try a restart it is usually fine. Wondering if this maybe an ICV problem. attached a vid on what it is doing. ruclips.net/video/Y-hzMHISGvg/видео.html

      Bad battery or charging system problem. I noticed these cars get weird if the battery voltage is low. I get problems with the car not responding to the key, doing weird things with the key presses, and it will throw EWS codes in INPA. Also other weirdness like the MID backlight flashing every few seconds or a gauge freaks out. Charging the battery fixes it but ultimately the brushes and bearings in the alternator were worn and needed replacement. Battery was only being half charged.
