The best tutorial on valve adjustment I've seen. Helped me alot with all the simplified pictures of camsaft lobe and rocker cause I couldn't find any proper help written on my native language and I struggle a bit with the english car vocalbulary. Thanks mate!
one more tip, only move the crank in the normal running direction (clockwise) and also there is an easy way to check which cylinder can be adjustet at the moment. you want to turn the engine until on one cylinder BOTH valves are fully opened. so the pointy think from the camshafts are both pointed towards the rocker. then just use the very simple formula: 7-[the cylinder which valves are open] = [the cylinder you can adjust]
And only adjust the valves on a cold engine (below 20°C). and it has shown that a adjustment with 0.30mm brings a little better idle (although it might be a tiny little bit more noisy). so i would go with 0.30mm on cold engine ;) greetings from germany
Also you need to inspect the contact spot of the eccentric washer surface by the valve, because the probe surface, can compensate the clearance between valve and frayed of eccentric washer surface while adjusting and after pulling the probe, the clearance will not be proper. In this case you might to need to replace the old eccentric washer.
to start with BMW said use the gauge valve vs rockerarm later use it at the camshaft vs rockerarm and do not tighten it to hard trying to remove the ticking
also, if you don't want to use a wrench on the crank bolt, you can bump the starter by jumping two pins in the diagnostic port. 11 and 14 for motronic 1.1 and 1.3 cars, not sure about 1.0
You're a daring fella shoving your finger in the breather and dragging crap towards the valve train. Obviously not a good idea haha for the most part you got a decent DIY vid
Hum, only turn the engine in the direction that it normally turns, not backwards. And when tightening down something like a valve cover start with the center nuts and cross tighten your way to the outer nuts.
Plz let me know ones you set the rocker arm do you have to set for every single valve? Im lost with adjusting order ? Plz help great video by the way keep up the great work
Might you list a parts list of items necessary to accomplish this task in the Info section of the video? and recommended things to since it's all opened up?
I understand the firing order, but does this mean adjust the intake then the exhaust simultaneously in the firing order and NOT adjusting the intake firing order first, then going back and adjusting the exhaust set?
FUCK YEAH! Thanks for the video. I've done just about everything to my 383,000 mile e30 that was necessary. This is one of my final steps. Lastly will be repairing the odometer so I can watch it roll 500k :)
Dan Cronin just finished the adjustment. It doesn't seem to be as quiet as yours but it's an improvement for sure. Should I be using a thinner gauge feeler due to my insane amounts of miles?
With my limited knowledge I’d say yes, at least when you want to adjust both valves on your cylinder before moving on (because obviously the air inlet and exhaust valve wont be open at the same time)
I had my valves adjusted because my m20 has always rattled at around 3-4k and it’s 100% top end but 9 years later it’s still doing it. Any ideas what to look at?
Thank u for your videos. I have a 1992 BMW 325i e30 convertible. Daily driver. I have been slowly restoring. Do u have a video trouble shooting the power antenna? Keep up the great work
Can you do an install of a head gasket? I need it on my car and am wondering how to do it? All the other RUclips videos just have time lapse of installs and I really like yours
Mine (175K) kept ticking even after adjusting them. Then I read somewhere that the Eccentric wheels wear out a bit. They suggested going down to a .09 gauge and now my car hums with no ticking.
My question is how can you see the lobe if its down. It was hard to see. Does the lobe have to be pointing exactly straight down. Cause as I said, its hard to tell. 2nd which nobody says each one of the valves has 2 that you have to do. So 12 valves are needed to be adjusted ? And does it matter which valve you start with ? I know the sequence 153624 I'm talking about the top or bottom do you start with ? Thanks
Ok so then the cam lobe (the pointy part) has to be pointed down for every set of rockers you adjust (intake and exhaust) or does the first cam love only have to be pointed down and you can do all of the adjustments, that's my question?
I have loud ticking still but they have been adjusted already, also someone told me it is the bottom end something that is causing the ticking? Any help would be nice, I hate how loud the ticking is and gets louder as I accelerate.
Quick question. Just got a 325i, and I have oil on the spark plug boot for cylinder #1. What does this indicate? What can I do to fix it? I hope you see this and reply. I need your help, please. Ethan
Its possible if there is oil on the business end of the plug, inside the cylinder, you have mechanical engine issues. (broken or worn piston ring(s), hole in piston, excessively worn valve guide and or seal...) but, I would say that since the car is so old unless it is giving you a significant misfire, don't worry about it.
+Rick Pons It needs to be pointed up and you can do them individually. The cam doesn't have to be in a certain spot to adjust the valves, you can move the cam around to adjust each valve.
Gerry Reggea this wokrs on all engines. its just the amount of space between the rocker arm and cam that varies. you can check yours by looking in the owners manual or just google it.
Yammie KhaosI will try and do a lot of research though I read on Haynes manual that it does not work on M40 as they are automatic, I will continue the research.Thanks.
Do you have to take out the spark plugs when you do this? I read on a few forums to do so to avoid compression build up but I didn't and now the noise is worse than before, any idea what I should do now??
It should be just fine. I've found with adjusting valves that you never quite get it perfect anyway because it's just done by feel. That extra 0.004mm won't make a difference.
If you can change the spark plug leads, that's sometimes useful. Make sure the plugs have got the right gap too if you can, I've had a car misfire badly in the past and it took me a long time to find out what it was. Turned out I dropped one of the spark plugs on the concrete before I put them in and I never noticed that the gap got screwed up on impact, made a huge difference when I put that right.
I am having a problem at wide open throttle on my 87 325e ... I adjusting the valves in the morning but I still don't think that will fix my problem at wide open throttle... every time I put it to the floor right before the rev limiter hits it will start to break up and loose power and somtimes it will die all together but if you drive easy then it's smooth ... Do you have any advice for this problem? I have replaced every sensor and fuel pump in the car already all new relays .. new coi... plugs ...still problems ... please help :)
had the same problem open the cover from you maf sensor and check the carbon tracks mine had lost some pieces and had the exact same issue replace it if its worn out and it schould run like new
Before I did this my engine wasn't ticking but I wanted to make sure it was adjusted right but after I did this..the ticking got really loud and I made sure the adjustment was correct and everything was correct but it's still ticking really loud..what do I do?
Does the intake valve and exhaust valve open and close at the same time ? i mean if the lobe is pointing downwards in cylinder 1 , does this mean i can adjust both the intake and exhaust valves ? or is there a separate lobe on the camshaft for intake valve and exhaust valve ? sorry , i'm about to do this for the first time , still didn't have a look inside .. want to know what to expect . And to get TDC on each cylinder , can i lift the back of the car and just simply rotate the wheel backwards and forewards in gear to get the TDC position for each cylinder ?
They do not open at the same time, hence why intake lets air in, and exhaust, lets air out. Just do one at a time, you don't have to go in firing order (153624), but its recommended and it makes doing the job easier. If your car is equipped with a LSD (limited slip differential), you cant rotate the wheels like that to turn the engine. I like to do it with a big wrench. If I just confused you further, watch this video- ruclips.net/video/x0H7CP2QLxA/видео.html He did that on a toyota I believe but the way he explains it is good, but a E30 is on a completely different spec. I don't agree with his pushing of the car, but thats his choice.
E30Source Thanks for the fast reply ... yeah using a wrench would be easier .. but the problem is that i don't have one that would fit in there ... my car does not have LSD ..and it has a manual transmission.. so lifting one side of the car and rotating one rear wheel should do the job ... i think .... your videos are really great... good walkthrough .. good quality .. very helpful ( though my car is an e34 .. but with an m20 engine ) any plans on making a detailed DIY on how to replace the timing belt ?
+E30Source thanks for the reply .im looking to buy a used one but most people have them out of cars already is there any way that i can check them to see if theyre not blown or if theyre in good condition?
E30Source I did the valve adjustment according to a BMW Manual (0.25 mm clearance). It makes even more noise, but it seems to start better (still a crappy idle - maybe the injectors). When i did the adjustment, the clearance was VERY tight. Anyway, i'm going to a BMW dealer tomorow (clearance of my wallet will be very tight !).
surelytempting It sounds like the idle is higher and it still is dieseling a little bit. I'd try re-adjusting, and two quick questions, what oil are you using? And, did you replace the breather hose running from the valve cover to the idle control valve? This hose is called the PCV hose and it gets clogged normally and starts to make it run like a diesel.
E30Source thanks for the reply! Using some generic 20w50 and breather hose is about 4 months new. Just got it smogged after a new cat was installed and NOx is through the roof and 1.1%O2 coming through... Could huge vacuum leak be causing some of the "dieseling"?
This video is wrong he isn't adjusting them right now is he teaching or showing you all the right way! I learned it the hard way and by calling catuned in California there are 12 valves 6 for I take and 6 for exhaust the intake is supposed to b adjusted with a 7 feeler gauge not a 10 or 0.25 and the exhaust with a 8 you can't adjust them all as a 10 it won't sound right it's wrong take this video down and make a proper one a detailed one with no shortcuts if you going to do something do it full and right
The best tutorial on valve adjustment I've seen. Helped me alot with all the simplified pictures of camsaft lobe and rocker cause I couldn't find any proper help written on my native language and I struggle a bit with the english car vocalbulary. Thanks mate!
Great video! My M20B27 is running *much* smoother!
(Except for the rocker I broke /sulk)
Still running better!
one more tip, only move the crank in the normal running direction (clockwise) and also there is an easy way to check which cylinder can be adjustet at the moment. you want to turn the engine until on one cylinder BOTH valves are fully opened. so the pointy think from the camshafts are both pointed towards the rocker. then just use the very simple formula: 7-[the cylinder which valves are open] = [the cylinder you can adjust]

good video, thanks for posting. Now I have to do this to my m10

+1 for sure. I checked mine, 383,000 mi, but they looked good. Definitely worth investigating
kaygeee How do you make shure? Visually?
to start with BMW said use the gauge valve vs rockerarm later use it at the camshaft vs rockerarm and do not tighten it to hard trying to remove the ticking
also, if you don't want to use a wrench on the crank bolt, you can bump the starter by jumping two pins in the diagnostic port. 11 and 14 for motronic 1.1 and 1.3 cars, not sure about 1.0
все правильно ! красавчик !
I don't know what you are saying!
You're a daring fella shoving your finger in the breather and dragging crap towards the valve train. Obviously not a good idea haha for the most part you got a decent DIY vid
+Rollincoal I take chances.
Same firing order in my w210s engine also have the e30 m20 best engines in my use
so great information
Does adjusting an M10 work pretty much the same? (well, obviously it has two less cylinders, firing order is different etc)

I understand the firing order, but does this mean adjust the intake then the exhaust simultaneously in the firing order and NOT adjusting the intake firing order first, then going back and adjusting the exhaust set?
Thanks Dan much appreciated -
great information friend thanks
How do you get the breather hose back on?
What was the dimensions of the feeler guage you used?
FUCK YEAH! Thanks for the video. I've done just about everything to my 383,000 mile e30 that was necessary. This is one of my final steps. Lastly will be repairing the odometer so I can watch it roll 500k :)
Thanks!
Dan Cronin just finished the adjustment. It doesn't seem to be as quiet as yours but it's an improvement for sure. Should I be using a thinner gauge feeler due to my insane amounts of miles?
I did this job while the motor was hot :\
Yeah so now the valves open late and close early. Do it again!
It seems to run a lot better during idle and at high revs. I think I'm satisfied for now. We'll see if it blows up
I have a question about the removal of the valve cover. My question is do you have to remove the spark plug wires to remove the valve cover?
+POOPSGOOD no! When you remove the spark plugs, it is easyer to rotate the engine, but it is not necessary.
Do you have to move the crankshaft to adjust the camshaft everytime you move on to a new rocker?
With my limited knowledge I’d say yes, at least when you want to adjust both valves on your cylinder before moving on (because obviously the air inlet and exhaust valve wont be open at the same time)
0.25mm didn't make a difference for me. After some research, I found 0.10 to be the solution. Though I should note this vehicle is 230k+ on mileage.
I had my valves adjusted because my m20 has always rattled at around 3-4k and it’s 100% top end but 9 years later it’s still doing it. Any ideas what to look at?
8:59 mark if you're looking to hear the noise difference.
Thank u for your videos. I have a 1992 BMW 325i e30 convertible. Daily driver. I have been slowly restoring. Do u have a video trouble shooting the power antenna? Keep up the great work
Michael M Will make a video in a few weeks.
Can you do an install of a head gasket? I need it on my car and am wondering how to do it? All the other RUclips videos just have time lapse of installs and I really like yours
I really don't want to do a head gasket but if I overheat my E30, I'll do a video.
Mine (175K) kept ticking even after adjusting them. Then I read somewhere that the Eccentric wheels wear out a bit. They suggested going down to a .09 gauge and now my car hums with no ticking.
+Darth Mal I wish I could hear a before and after
+Darth Mal on this engine they have to tick a bit (bmw recommends setting them at 0.30 and they will run much better)
Are we to adjust to TDC the one time for the whole adjustment, or for each eccentric at a time?
on every valve I do I the camlobe has to be down no matter what
How similar is the process on an N20? Torque specs on any of those bolts?
What’s the part number for the oil breather pipe from the rocker cover , thanks
Thank you!
+Daniel Sadoski Jr. No prob!
How did you find top dead center so easily
My friend told me he adjusted the valves on his m20 and i asked him if he went in the 153624 pattern and he said no, is that bad for his m20?
My question is how can you see the lobe if its down. It was hard to see. Does the lobe have to be pointing exactly straight down. Cause as I said, its hard to tell. 2nd which nobody says each one of the valves has 2 that you have to do. So 12 valves are needed to be adjusted ? And does it matter which valve you start with ? I know the sequence 153624 I'm talking about the top or bottom do you start with ? Thanks
the lobe doesn't need to be exactly 90 degrees pointed down, you can adjust it but try to get as down as possible.
thankssssss dan
The ticking noise is driving me nuts - any solutions - thanks
Ok so then the cam lobe (the pointy part) has to be pointed down for every set of rockers you adjust (intake and exhaust) or does the first cam love only have to be pointed down and you can do all of the adjustments, that's my question?
+Rick Pons The cam lobe has to be pointed down for every set of rockers you adjust (intake and exhaust).
Bimmer love baby!
Nice video thanks! What's the purpose of that breather hose?
+Terrence Poole Is a crankcase breather and acts like a vacuum hose for the valve cover.
Can I turn the crankshaft bolt from the top, not bottom? I have the shield at the bottom and I don't want to remove that.
What do you mean, turn it from the top?
I have loud ticking still but they have been adjusted already, also someone told me it is the bottom end something that is causing the ticking? Any help would be nice, I hate how loud the ticking is and gets louder as I accelerate.
Mine is the same way. I run 15-40 Rotella oil and it helps a lot.
RCZeD Try adjusting them from the cam side.
+RCZeD you sure you don't have an exhaust leak? any holes in your exhaust
Question! Buying a 325i need to know what to look for and what to ask any help?
I have a video on common problems- check it out.
Stay tuned!
He tightened up rocker cover in the wrong sequence I think
So would this work for the 325e
I did everything correct and now my cars ticking loud on acceleration but hums on idle, any ideas?
+Michael Bertsche I would try readjusting them again
Quick question. Just got a 325i, and I have oil on the spark plug boot for cylinder #1. What does this indicate? What can I do to fix it?
I hope you see this and reply. I need your help, please.

(broken or worn piston ring(s), hole in piston, excessively worn valve guide and or seal...) but, I would say that since the car is so old unless it is giving you a significant misfire, don't worry about it.
Oh okay, thanks man. I really appreciate it.
Does the cam lobe only have to be pointed down on the first rocker or does it have to be pointed down on each rocker that you adjust?
+Rick Pons It needs to be pointed up and you can do them individually. The cam doesn't have to be in a certain spot to adjust the valves, you can move the cam around to adjust each valve.
so you just have to make sure the engine is TDC the whole time
No, you need to make sure that the cam lobe (pointy part) is pointed down, you need to move the cam/ crankshaft to be able to adjust the valves.
Hi thanks for your DIY...Does this work with the M40? Cheers.
Take out the plugs, readjust and retry.
So for every valve the piston has to be tdc or just the first one?
www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/techarticles/E30-Valve_Adjust/E30-Valve_Adjust.htm
1/5/3/6/2/4 which one is which?
6 starts at the fire wall, 1 at the front of the engine, closer to the radiator.
done it :-)
Did you replace the valve cover gasket?
I didn't, my mechanic replaced the gasket but didn't adjust the valves. You can reuse them, just make sure you torque everything down evenly.
Hey Dan! Is it the same process for a 325 1988?
Yep! Just double check the valve clearances for the ETA engine which you have.
Do you do the top and bottom rocker
+Chase Manneh Yes and yes.
just wondering if a .254 mm feller guage is good enough. or should it be more precise.?
It should be just fine. I've found with adjusting valves that you never quite get it perfect anyway because it's just done by feel. That extra 0.004mm won't make a difference.
+Alfred Munkenbeck yeah I adjusted them and the ticks gone. Time to stop the misfiring with some new plugs
If you can change the spark plug leads, that's sometimes useful. +Alfred Munkenbeck lol the same thing happened to me. I droped one through my engine bay and it hit the ground and the gap got closed.
j'ai besoin d'une boîte automatique pour ma BMW E30 325IX de 1989, pouvez-vous m'aider? Merci

I also have this exact problem, sometimes when i step on the gas i get almost no response
Have you tried a new fuel pressure regulator?
had the same problem
open the cover from you maf sensor and check the carbon tracks
mine had lost some pieces and had the exact same issue
replace it if its worn out and it schould run like new
Yea I'd say MAF (Well AFM).
check your crank pos sensor for residue/damage, located near the crankshaft on passenger side?
Do you do this on a cold engine or a hot engine?
Cold
Yea buddy doing this.tomorrow, do you have torque specs? Sub'd
The torque specs for the valve cover is actually really low like 15- 20ft/lbs I think but I would check online, that's all you have to torque.
hey what if I didn't go in firing order? I just did 1-6 in order
+Savannah Mchenry Shouldn't matter. I always do them in firing order though.
+E30Source yea I thought so its probably just easier in firing order.. like less crank turns
You got it.
Is that firing order ok for the 87 325is
+Chase Manneh yes
@e30source is this the same for m42 motors?
No M42's are a totally different motor.
m42 engines got self adjusting valveplay because of the hydros ;)
Before I did this my engine wasn't ticking but I wanted to make sure it was adjusted right but after I did this..the ticking got really loud and I made sure the adjustment was correct and everything was correct but it's still ticking really loud..what do I do?
+Jacky Zheng Try readjusting, chances are one or two of the valves are just a bit too tight.
+E30Source ok thanks! Cause I'm just starting out with my E30 and your channels really helped! Thanks!
No prob! Enjoy!

If I just confused you further, watch this video- ruclips.net/video/x0H7CP2QLxA/видео.html
He did that on a toyota I believe but the way he explains it is good, but a E30 is on a completely different spec.
Everybody asks about the timing belt haha. I will try to get a timing belt video in a few months but here in NJ its frozen!
How long did this take you?
I would say about 2 hours
where can i get a m20b25 for the e30?
+Kenny Mitchell Craiglist, I see them posted a lot there.
+E30Source thanks for the reply .im looking to buy a used one but most people have them out of cars already is there any way that i can check them to see if theyre not blown or if theyre in good condition?
Check the timing belt and for fluid leaks like coolant. Rebuild the engine while it is out.
Do you have an Instagram dan?
A
Just bought a 1989 520i ... same sound, terrible idle and poor mileage !
Valve adjustment, ICV clean, and PCV hose to valve cover replaced and your good to go!
Thank you again for your videos !
I really hope that your channel will get more attention over time.
Does it cost you to make those videos ?
Well I pay for the parts and then I research online how to install them, and make a video to try to help others install it too.
Ouch! Good luck!
:-( I Messed all up:-(:-(:-( should have not touch it at the first place :-(:-(:-(
now my m20b25 runs like a diesel :-(:-(:-(:-(
Do it again, and take it slow. Believe me you'll get it.
third time fail :-(
Lmfao hahahaha same to me man yo I can't even get it and I did it 6 times already this guy e39 source isn't explain ever step
And here's post: ruclips.net/video/Zhcyx4N-YpQ/видео.html
surelytempting It sounds like the idle is higher and it still is dieseling a little bit.
Spray around the engine bay to see if there is a vacuum leak and if the idle changes, there is your leak.
This video is wrong he isn't adjusting them right now is he teaching or showing you all the right way! I learned it the hard way and by calling catuned in California there are 12 valves 6 for I take and 6 for exhaust the intake is supposed to b adjusted with a 7 feeler gauge not a 10 or 0.25 and the exhaust with a 8 you can't adjust them all as a 10 it won't sound right it's wrong take this video down and make a proper one a detailed one with no shortcuts if you going to do something do it full and right
AlboThuggaa Ok. Have fun.
+AlboThuggaa I don't follow you... +E30Source good video
