Can Optoma's UHD30 stand in for a gaming monitor? Does 240hz refresh rate look good on a big screen? With HDR 10, 4k and a screen that can be as big as your wall, is it worth it to check out projectors again?

They sold gamers “gaming chairs,” enough said.
my gaming chair is hella comfortable
Na, Secret labs chairs are stupid comfy and the whole office has one.
Gamers spend a lot of time on their ass and want a chair that looks like it can hit a rally stage brah get your head in the game smfh
Ugh my brother just got a gaming chair and it is so uncomfortable. I told him before that good office chairs are way better. He just liked the style better than regular chairs.
Best 'gaming chair' is a barber chair... adjustable footrest, headrest, better cushion, and about the same price.

"Do they think gamers are suckers?"
If gamers weren't suckers, companies like Activision, EA, Ubisoft, Warner Bros and so many others would be out of business.
We are suckers in that sense, we know damn well what they’re doing. We still purchase the games because sometimes it’s a certain game series I like
Ideally you would setup your projector so that you don't need digital keystone adjustment at all. As soon as you turn on keystone you're losing pixels and compressing some parts of the image or stretching other parts. What they really need is lense shift, but you need to upgrade to the optoma UHD50x to get that.
imagine having a cpu pillow more expensive than ur real cpu
"Why hasn't Linus told us about the sponsors yet?"
He doesn't even try anymore
Imma tell my teachers they need this for their powerpoint presentations
You shouldn’t use keystone in the first place anyways.
Usually unavoidable in household situation, especially desk/table mounted
You kinda have to unless you want the projector to be in an awkward location. In most setups you would want it mounted on the ceiling. I suppose you could build the wall in a specific angle to compensate though. But then it will only look right from a specific height.
Yeah, if you mount the projector on the ceiling and do a lot of measuring to make sure the lens is lined up to the screen properly, you can skip the keystone adjustment. Mine's ceiling mounted and measured well, but small keystone adjustments are still needed because the screen doesn't hang perfectly flat.
I play videogames and watch movies on a sub $200 1080p Vankyo Performance V620 projector I bought from Walmart, in total about $300 for the screen, extra long hdmi and laptop stand for the projector. At 100 inches, and only $300 total, this thing is awesome. I don't know what the input lag is, but I play all types of games including Warzone with no issues.
Linus, when will you finally turn ON the heating? I see you wearing that winter hat for months now. :)
In BC those are welded onto your head just after birth, and in summer hair is rendered on.
I am into the projector gaming. I love the big immersive screen. I got a tight budget, so I use the Vankyo V630W. It works for me. Not 4K, but I can live with it.
Black looking black, vs black looking gray... Probably something to do with the fact that you're projecting onto a dark wall, rather than a white screen?
They're using cameras that cost tens of thousands and yet there's so much visible noise in the footage. Just what are you doing wrong?
I think you are talking about the processing done by youtube.
Came here looking for this. What happened? This is not regular on this channel.
YT processing and it could also be low light
Videos on floatplane likely look a lot better
Combination of a low light scene and digital punch-in zoom all. the. thime.
Um, yeah, you should *NEVER* rely on keystone correction on a permanent projector installation. Carting it around for portable setups, sure. But just do the installation right and you won't even need any keystone correction. You can easily mount this on the ceiling (upside down) and get a great image at the right height without needing any keystone correction at all. Not a big deal. Keystone correction *decimates* your image quality.
Thanks for making this - I have an Optoma GT1080 Short throw projector and was considering upgrading - think I'll leave it though as I also have a 120" screen and no issues with the contrast (even without HDR).

Yo.. random question, what's with hime saying "60x4240" at 9:32
7:19, I could see a ton of rainbow effects, so much for "gaming"
I was playing world of Warcraft on a 3 meter screen over 10 years ago, it was epic
Projector rule #1: NEVER use Keysteome correction! It ruins your resolution! Mount it on the ceiling upside-down as it is inteded and you are fine.
Rainbow effect is lessened by the speed of the color wheel, not the speed of the mirrors. Man, you have a lot to learn about projectors.
1:25 I'm getting a young Michael Algar vibe from this. 😂
You are measuring ANSI contrast not the on/off contrast. ANSI Contrast is usually much lower than On/Off. And ANSI Contrast is actually pretty damn good for DLP projectors vs other tech
Bought the optoma uhd42 cause my old Benq w1070 needed an upgrade when ps5 came. So far im happy with it.
@Linus Tech tips Ok, Linus, you're wrong, you may not have read the user manual!
www.optoma.co.uk/product-details/uhd30#downloads
I don't have this projector model, I have another optoma projector, two times less expansive and as they use some kind of same base, I can say that contrary of what you say, this projector's best usage is mounted to the ceiling. You will not need keystone because you mount the bottom of the projector on the ceiling, so that the top of the projector is under his bottom, the top of the projected image is in fact his base (p14 on us English user manual) then you switch to adequate projection mode (user manual, p35: "Setup menu//Projection//: Select the preferred projection between front, rear, ceiling-top, and rear-top."). Additionally, the ceiling mounting make the projector further away from your ears, so the fan will be less noticeable.
Also this projector don't have lens shifting, keystone correction is purely numerical, so it deteriorate image quality, so it should always be avoided. Opoma have the UHD40, 300€ more expansive, AFAIK, it's the same, with optical features.
I currently use a HD29H, that cost me less than 700€ + 350€ (screen) it allow me to play 1080p@ 120Hz on an image size of 2.84m*1.60m (128inch diagonal). UHD have the same brightness, or maybe better. You speak about vizio P series, but you just can't reach or even start to approach such a size with their TVs. Even when considering other TV brands and the UHD 30 + a 400€ 2.8m base screen (1700€ in total) there is no match, such big TVs will be way more expansive.
Also i disagree with the issue about distance from the screen: I don't know the projector's name in north America, but in Europe, their projectors (optoma) have a short range and a long range version ( ie HD29H Vs HD29HST), other brands do the same, like Acer. So it's up to the user to choose the right projector that match with his room.
DLP projectors are, side to the various HMD displays the last kind of display still in the marked that can display stereoscopic 3D. So thanks to Texas instrument, and Acer, BenQ and Optoma to allows us, stereoscopic fans and gamers to build stereoscopic hardware.
4:21 A pillow for $69.99 ?? That's Rs5,000 in India, thats my monthly rent hahah
Spinning wheel ? That's ancient tv tech
Linus: Check out this $10,000 processor!
Linus: We couldn’t afford a $250 projection screen.
*sigh*
screen set so high my neck hurts just watching this
you avoid using keystone at any cost anyway even in very high end home theater projectors so them not including it is not that big deal in game mode
What you guys gotta get is a dark room with vantablack walls.
I'm sure they forgot that they can adjust the angle of the image.
I got a wt-2900 1080p beamer and yes my monitor is better but none can beat the cinema feeling a beamer gives to movies and games :)
I have a 4K projector that I spent $300 on which was on sale on Amazon normally selling at $800 I say normally although I'm pretty sure it's permanently on sale at some price although nowhere near as cheap as I got it probably about 500 is the average price.... And I play steadia on there regularly.... Not to mention the screen size can go up to 300 in even though I only have a hundred inch screen due to the size of my room. I do believe the refresh rate only goes up to 90 on the projector I have though... Vertical and horizontal keystone correction as well for a large range of degrees I don't remember exactly how far but I checked it out and it went pretty far
Just got hd28i very impressed for the money

They're clearly a choice of convenience over sound quality (which is pretty much the whole concept of this type of product anyway) but still sound good at that. @Billy West It's still fucking stupid to say that. Yeah, it might seem obvious to you, but when dealing with expensive hardware, it'd be dumb not to just because "it seems obvious". It gets intimidating when money is on the line, and it's mean of you to call them stupid for looking up a tutorial. Besides, as history has proven, the people who want convenience far outnumber the people who care more about quality. Especially for something like gaming, a hobby that's supposed to be enjoyable. They are the market.
@Billy West You sound very pretentious and far too sure of assets you don't possess. Yeah man, people default to asking more knowledgeable people for help. That's how we as a species succeed. Confidence will get you killed more than it will help, and with an attitude like that, you might have a lot of trouble in your life. I don't see your problem with needing help. Sometimes, it's a good thing to ask people for things, especially when they seem really simple. Like, I make clothing for fun, and there's a suprising amount of things that I never could have realized on my own. I still don't see how the simplification of games is inherently a bad thing. There's a lot of unnecessary complexity to many things. Removing complexity that doesn't add depth is a wholly good thing. I hope you get help with whatever keeps you from depending on others.

@@guynumber3100 well there is indeed a legitimate market for CRTs because of their use in the competitive meelee scene but since most people aren't aware of it, they assume they have no value
@@guynumber3100 There are extremely nice CRTs out there that are definitely worth the cost, and CRTs are, in many ways, still the best display technology created. Literal perfect motion handling, excellent black levels, instantaneous input lag, and high refresh rates. Also no fixed pixel grid so any resolution you feed it (that it can support) will display natively. The issues with the technology are more practical in nature (big and heavy, can't be manufactured to large sizes effectively, and the way they refresh can cause headaches for many people).

You can adjust keystone FIRST outside of gaming mode, THEN turn gaming mode back on. Kinda silly, but it works.

I pre-ordered Cyberpunk and I enjoyed it. Next to no bugs besides small ones like one random person being invisible. The only thing that was a downer for me is I didn't do many side quests and beat the game VERY fast. like in 12-14 hours.

You're expecting a water cooled glass lightbulb? How would that work?
@@Heliocentric that is a good question. Depends on the design. You could also change the fan for a quieter one
@@MaxMichel89 frankly, the issue with this unit is it's a budget model and the fact you do not have keystone adjustments. Which is necessary for placement of a home projector.
@@Heliocentric yeah i know and there are even better ways to correct the picture like 4 corner correction...
@@Heliocentric Keystone correction breaks the picture quality by stretching the pixels so that is something you don't wanna use. If you pay this much for a projector you surely want to install it properly. I use lens shift if it's available but nothing else than that. And with a high contrast screen I'd stay away from that as well and trying to place the projector as close as possible in the centre of the screen.
Fun fact: Optoma is the brand of choice for projectors used in arcade games (I'm a Round1 technician)

they are new right?
@@magneticfish5777 Yeah, I noticed that as well. Right now he sounding a lot like a person who just recently had their tongue pierced.
As someone experienced in projector installation, this video hurts. The reason Optoma sacrifices keystone adjustment for less input lag is because keystone adjustment should be avoided anyway, especially in a home theater setup. (Side fact: Cinema projectors actually don't provide any keystone adjustment because the whole movie industry would never allow it.) Keystone adjustment is a post-process done in the digital domain, which means you are significantly sacrificing the image resolution when using it.
When installing projectors it's expected that the user installs it UPSIDE-DOWN in the ceiling, at the correct height for the height of the screen that is planned. Perhaps Optoma didn't provide enough instructions regarding this but I have a feeling it was rather the LTT guys not RTFM.
Well, sucks to be Optoma i guess.
Shouldn’t there be some way to get keystone to work with some combination of lenses and prisms and stuff?
@@sea_kerman Everything is possible with an unlimited budget. A mechanical/optical keystone correction would probably make the projector 10x more expensive. It would also require a lot more maintenance and calibration.
But yes, it's probably possible.
Hearing Linus’ lisp from his bottom braces are giving me life

Yes, yes we are. We instant-click on every video, even though we were cock-teased about finding out if Dennis went over budget or not

I have this projector on the ceiling and it's very good without any keystone adjustment. Just set it up correctly.
