I just want to mention the camera work in your videos. For example, in this video there was a lot of essentially "talking head" where a static shot would normally be used. However, Phil's very subtle "hand-held" motion and zooms into a closeup of you and back out to more of the room just make the video feel more alive and like I'm in the room listening to you. In the real world, if I were in a room listening to you, I would be making eye contact with you and looking back and forth at the thing you're talking about, and Phil captures that extremely well. And I'm not quite sure how Phil does it, but it's a very smooth and stable hand-held, not the super annoying shakey cam. Anyway, this is something I've noticed and really appreciated about your videos for a little while now and wanted just just mention that I notice it and I appreciate it and I think it makes your videos better. Merry Christmas!

Just want to clear something up on theater projectors. You can find 4k but most theaters are only 2k. I've had a couple of my films make into festivals and I have to have DCP (Digital Projection File) file created to playback on the theater projector. I only did a 2k file for my last 2 films because 4k was useless. It was surprising to learn this.

Weird. You’d think something that large would need to be 4K or higher, even with the light scatter. Because you can almost see pixelation at 4K on a 20 foot screen

  • @kreeuwij

Virtually all projectors are designed to project the image with the lens at either the bottom of the screen (table top) or the top of the screen (ceiling mounted). If you place the projector at either of those heights and it’s centered and perpendicular, you don’t need any keystone adjustment. Home theater enthousiasts don’t use any keystone as it degrades the image quality somewhat. Just take some care in projector placement and you’ll be fine with not having any digital image adjustment.

I bought a projector specifically for Halo CE LAN party's and it was an incredible experience. After the party I remember playing on legendary difficultly and flying through the game. To this date my dream setup was running three projectors on PC with convergence software on an oval screen with Nvidia 3D Vision and as I was waiting for the projector and processing tech to improve Nvidia killed off 3D Vision. FYI Cinema still maxes out at 4k. The projectors are either using a Xenon lamp, which is the majority of equipment installed, or lasers which have been slowly rolling out over the last 4 years. It will be 2025-2026 before the majority of cinemas are 4k laser systems and at least 10 years before anyone might see a wider rollout of anything 8K or above. Even the top of the line IMAX laser system that they partnered with Barco/Cinionic on is only 4K.

I looked for hours to find a high quality projector screen under 500$ and I finally found the perfect recipe. I forgot the channel name I discovered that showed me the materials needed. But all ya need is polyester fabric and get grey, black, and white material. Then layer them together and stretch them over your frame. Depending on the type of picture you want depends on how you layer the fabric. And the screen is viewable from both sides and in a mildly lit room with a cheap(300$) projector. Definitely worth doing if your into projectors.

Projectors usually work best in a room with enough space to do it justice, eg cinema room, the price would suggest it’d be of more interest to someone with greater means, or decent disposable income.
Having to manually fanny about with the 4K switch would get old pretty quick but if you did want to make use of the different refresh rates for different sources, I suppose you’d put up with it. Should have auto detect though.

I'm not a competitive-shooter player and prefer the story-rich single player style, but being stuck at 60hz is starting to show it's age.
I don't think I can go back to a non-UST projector, it's so nice and convenient.
There are videos out there covering ones that go above 60hz @ 4K but its kinda false advertisement, as they dont actually have that output; like the LTT Nexigo video.
I think the current limitation is that Texas Instruments (that has the patent for these types of chips) just hasn't released the chips that have 4k over 60hz capability.

Actually, the benefit of an HD projector is you can make the pixels NOT visible by simply having the focus at 90% to 95 % focus, not at 100% focus. The very slight faint 5% or 10% blurriness hides the sharp pixel edges. But you also have to slightly tweak the color settings when doing that because the tiny blurriness causes the RGB to cross each other causing a very barely noticeable shift of colors and brightness. You just have to slightly change the tint and darken the brightness just a very tiny bit to restore the intended colors and brightness. That is why an out of focus projector image at a theater makes the image look washed out. It's the colors lights crossing each other.

Allowing the choice of 4k or 240hz is a good choice. Led Is also great for longevity in not having to change a bulb. However, they've never been able to reach quite the same brightness, and that 2000 lumens might not be enough to give you the best image quality. You'd need a fairly dark room to get the full contrast, but then you also have to take into account hdr. My BenQ has 3000 lumens, and while I bought a spare bulb, I havent had to change it out yet.
It might also be worth it to buy a good screen. Even lesser priced screens have 2 layers of black and white to help reflect and prevent it from bleeding out the back.

The reason, why the panel resolution on this projector is directly attached to the refreshrate should be the same like my Viewsonic PX748 4k. These projectors do pixel shifting and are only 1080p displays. They are vibrating 0,5 pixels to the left, 0,5 pixels down, 0,5 pixels to the right and 0,5 pixels up. Thats why you can get 1080/240, but only 4k/60, because it has to split up its refreshrate into the 4 different positions of the 1080p chip to get an image with the quality "like" an 4k image.
You simply can't get a 4k projector under 5000€ or 5000$, but i even heard one time that those for 5000 are pixel shifters too, because the true 4k projectors are manufactured for cinemas.... Really confusing, i dont know who to believe :D

I have one, it’s a BenQ though, and to note for those who have never gotten a projector before; yes you do need a matte white screen in a dark room instead of a bright white painted wall; also in a room with light ingest in the nicest ALR screen you can, it blocks out ambient light and such in lit rooms, rooms exposed to sunlight, etc. regardless I’m never ever going back to a tv or monitor. They even have really good budget ones, I started out with a $250 native 1080P one with HDR10, but most of those support 4K decoding and it will let you play 4K content and then downsample them but it’s a much better image than 1080ap, I’d argue that it’s 1440P or at least it only appears that way because the physical image is in fact 1080P, but still it’s hard to tell the difference. Projectors are the future or should be IMO. And not just for gaming, but all the movies and stuff I’ve been watching on my Series X, on a 100 inch screen, my wall is only 110 inches so I went with 100 inches and I mean come on that dwarfs 99% of big screen TVs and if I want I could put it in another room and make it up to 150 inches.

Not a projector enthusiast either. But, a home theater audio zealot. One thing about gaming consoles and now this projector is what kind of system/equipment they share space with. Xbox should consider how Jeep thought about their Cherokee being parked in garages next to Porsche, Mercedes, etc. They realized people wanted the adventure, but it needed to also fit in with their good taste, so they made the Grand Cherokee. There have been Xbox consoles (especially the silly shaped white 360) that I haven't been crazy about parking with my righteous A/V equipment. So you asked what we thought about this projector and for me, the green strips are abhorrent. For the kids room, fine. But for that alone it would never go into my home theater system. I know it's petty. But it's my place, I can be picky.

@JayzTwoCents A cinema projector can’t be compared to any domestic projector. The blurring you are talking about isn’t a thing. A correctly setup professional projector has the ability to have the convergence corrected. I haven’t been to any cinema in the UK that has been set up correctly. They all look terrible compared to how they can look. At a demo in Barco’s HQ in Belgium their cinema demo theatre absolutely blew me away with how good the image can be when setup correctly.

See? This is one of those things that pisses me off about console manufacturers. They treat monitor resolutions, such as 1440p as an afterthought. Often releasing the capability months after the new console has released. If not a year. For some reason Microsoft and Sony have in their minds that the average family can just hijack the main large screen TV or projector to play Fortnite for 4 hours a day. I'd like to think that most people game in their rooms--possibly even at their desk, on a 32-in monitor. But no bigger because? Well? It's on their desk. And if you do want to game on something smaller and you're after features such as VRR which were only initially ever launched on TV, in the beginning, then you're forced to buy something no smaller than a 60", because if you want the quality of a high-end gaming monitor in TV format? It needs to be huge! Otherwise? You're buying a 43-in TV with a cheap 8-bit panel, no VRR and HDMI 2.0. This is stupid! And marketing projectors make it worse. Not everybody has the size of bedroom or gaming room that can facilitate a large screen TV, or even a 43-in TV. This room might have worked out equipment in it, a PC and a bookshelf full of books, a sizable litterbox, for those who own a cat etc. yet? Microsoft markets these things as if everybody can just hijack the living room for an entire day every day and that nobody might want to watch something on it as they game. I have a 70-in TV in our living room and I do not use that for gaming because when I game my wife is usually watching TV. And this is further worsened by the fact that at least as of the time that I had last looked? You can't even find a 32-in TV that's 4K. So, needless to say, in order to facilitate both my PC and PS5 VRR setup? I had to buy an OLED 42" TV that thank God Sony was willing to make. But I still had to rig up the capability to game from my chair, with mouse and keyboard from 5ft away...and also ditch my 38" ultra wide, since you'd be talking Huge borders on console. I went through two TV setups, all too big, until Sony released a semi-high end 42" OLED in 2022. The A90K. But the good news is? Even though it is still much too big for my desk, I have found that you can run it in ultra wide custom resolution and it's the same size as my alienware was, in terms of viewspace.

I actually HAD to buy a projector because I couldn't buy a TV in Japan and bring it back home to my country after two years, while a small, relatively cheap projector was portable enough, and kinda cool. I literally DID just use an ironed bedsheet pinned to my wall, and it worked GREAT with my Xbox One X when I used the black-out curtains in my room. I mainly play single-player games, but ancient Greece and Egypt (Assassin's Creed) looked AMAZING projected onto a wall! If I had the space and budget, I would definitely consider a projector for gaming again, so absolutely recommend people with the space and budget to at least try it!♥️👍

I have an older ViewSonic 4k pixel shift with 240 1080p and love it. The colors aren't very accurate but beyond that it's been a great projector for gaming on PC. The bulb is starting to slowly go (after a few years and beyond the rated hours, no complaints there) but replacements are very expensive. I replaced it with an Epson 3200. The colors on the Epson are much better, and brightness is better, but focus is not nearly as good. It's also not really 4k, it's 1080p with side to side pixel shift, but not up and down so it's not as sharp and can't do 240hz. But the replacement bulbs are about $100 dollars which is cool. Overall gaming on projectors is really cool!

60hz refresh is not ideal for movie viewing. Because 60 does not divide evenly into 24, the frame rate that most films are shot in. 120 does. Not only that, 120 also divides evenly into 30 or 60, the most common frame rates for TV shows. So 120hz maintains the ability to display TV shows at their native frame rate without issues, while also doing the same for 24 fps film. As for gaming 120 is obviously better than 60.
So personally I'd never use that thing in 4K for any purpose. Image quality with projectors is far more dependent on the type of technology used to create the image than it is on resolution. I had a Panasonic 1080P projector at 120 inches, 120hz refresh, and it was fantastic. I've seen more entry level 4K projectors that looked considerably worse.
The other issue is the specs that say 1080P @ 240hz, 1440P @ 120hz, and 4K @ 60hz. That's deceptive because it suggests that this is a 4K projector that accepts other lower resolution inputs. The thing is, if that were the case why do you get lower refresh rates as you move up? A 4K projector capable of 240hz should be able to do that in 4K. The answer is this isn't a 4K projector. The actual panel inside that thing is a 1080P DLP chip. As you go up in resolution, which BTW is achieved through pixel shifting, the processing overhead to do that means it has to drop the refresh rate down. It presents itself to the source device as a 4K resolution, but that's due to a lot of trickery going on and it's limitations in terms of refresh rate and response time are due to that.
I would probably stick to 1440P on that thing, and I'd do some comparisons at 1080P. It may actually look and perform the best at 1080P since that's the actual native resolution.

I had a Benq W1070 that lasted for yrs, i had it at 90" screen size 1080p 60hz very low input lag for what it was & yeah did it's job.(even Linus back in the day made a vid on it) How ever if i ever go again for a projector it'll be a laser short throw so i don't have to worry about bulb changes so often, & mounting the sucker. Just sit it on a desk & set it up from the desk. I use a Hisense 58 inch Tv now. it does the job for me. Those willing to use a projector image quality & resolution & Input lag times are the only concern ill have for those gaming & watching movies & youtube or even act as a Pc Screen, they do work rather well.

On the same note, I decided to pair my Bravia XR A80K, with the Sony HT-S2000 because it had integrated services on the home bar. The option to change things should be integrated with automation. The need for an integration is needed to support the x-box ecosystem and that is always a challenge across platforms or product lines.
I tried the LG Samsung soundbars and the integration wasn’t there.
Is there similar cross platform issues with Gpu AMD, and Intel? That’s something I have been looking at when I build a new system?

I still have my old Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Game Boy (games), Game boy advance, sega game gear, etc.... Shortly after that family, money, etc.... So I went into computers where I do everything else. Led to one of my careers, but I digress. I like the idea of the projector for watching movies in the house, or for giving presentations elsewhere. Not sure I have enough room and/or wallspace to do one in my Office/Gaming room. Still a good bit of money. Looked interesting though.

Jay, I've noticed that your drive and enthusiasm for the content you produce have decreased in the past few episodes that I've watched. As consumers, we've become disenchanted with the latest technology releases, which are less ambitious, more expensive, and, in some cases, unable to be purchased. Your latest video seems to reflect this trend. Once, you were a bright-eyed, excited "big kid" who would ramble about the joys of the tech in front of you. But now, I can hear the disdain in your pauses as you rethink how to frame your next statement. You didn't have to say that you're not into projectors; I could tell from your performance that you weren't a fan. Your highlight of the product was CEC control, a technology that has been around since HDMI 1.0 and is now of legal drinking age. Additionally, you walked right into the talking point of HDMI 2.2 without explaining what it is, which goes against your usual standard of accuracy and calling out marketing BS in your reviews. I know my opinion may be unpopular, but I say this as someone who truly loves your channel. The best content you produce comes from within when you and your team are genuinely excited about what you're working on. I particularly enjoy the random, playful things your team comes up with like Nick channeling every cat ever caught on camera. When you produce content that you love, the likes, subscribers, and viewer interaction come naturally. I hope you and your loved ones are doing well and I look forward to seeing what brings you joy in the New Year. Thank you for all of your hard work over the years and into the future.
    Sincerely,
    Cody-Juan Shinobi

$1699 for a projector is a bit expensive for me, and you also need to spend hours to get this set up right, I think I'll be happy with a PC monitor. If you have to change your overall resolution settings to change the in-game resolution, I think that's a bit annoying, but I think that's also because of the price range. You can get a console for about $500 and a decent PC is about $3000, that's why you have better settings in a PC, that also goes for the graphics settings. Everything is about money, how more money you spend, the better the service is, that's just how this world works.
