Kinda makes you wonder how deep the retro esport well goes. I’d love to see more appreciation for things like the GBA or DS in this sense, but I have no idea what else could rise in popularity.
I think we've seen a resurgence for GCN because A) Melee proved these old games still have merit and can support a community long-term, B) the GameCube and other 6th-Gen consoles were the first to boast 3D graphical capabilities that aren't mostly boxy polygons, C) emulation has become more accepted as the original hardware gets older, and increasing computing power has made the average desktop capable of smoothly running these games, and D) the pandemic forced a lot of pre-existing and small communities to go online through Dolphin, and many of them created unique Dolphin builds to better facilitate netplay, which opens the door for more people to try it out. I'd love to see some DS or GBA games blow up, but that might be more difficult. Most of them weren't really built with multiplayer in mind, particularly on the GBA. A Mario Kart DS scene might be cool, though; that game holds up well, and might just have been the most important and improved entry in the franchise's history.
Ignoring Gen 3 Pokémon... Mega Man Battle Network is the most popular e-sport on the GBA as now, most of the games on that system, as I know, are speedruns. My friend and I still play Strikers whenever we see each other. In college we tried to find a strikers competitive community but were unsuccessful. However, we don’t use items and try to use the purest skill mechanics of the game
when we played this game items weren't that big of a problem but we forbade lob-shots - not because how in the video they go in so often but because even a weak lob-shot from the midfield would very likely stun the keeper for a short time leaving the goal open for an easy tap-in After some time where half of our goals where like this we decided to not use that mechanic anymore as it made the game boring and was not possible to defend against (except if you got lucky and got to the rebound first)
@@HannesHenkelmann bro you probably have the weak goalies cheat on if that’s happening. My friend and I don’t use a ton of lob shots but have found if you get close to the box and do a quick turn around when the goalie comes out, you can lob it over them

They can't take down emulators legally, just anything directly related to their products such as mods and fan projects based on their games (mostly, there are some which slipped through). Dolphin has been there since 2003 lol, it never went.
My friend and I still play Strikers whenever we see each other. In college we tried to find a strikers competitive community but were unsuccessful. However, we don’t use items and try to use the purest skill mechanics of the game
yeah the items kinda take the fun out of it sometimes when you play more seriously
when we played this game items weren't that big of a problem but we forbade lob-shots - not because how in the video they go in so often but because even a weak lob-shot from the midfield would very likely stun the keeper for a short time leaving the goal open for an easy tap-in
After some time where half of our goals where like this we decided to not use that mechanic anymore as it made the game boring and was not possible to defend against (except if you got lucky and got to the rebound first)
@@HannesHenkelmann bro you probably have the weak goalies cheat on if that’s happening. My friend and I don’t use a ton of lob shots but have found if you get close to the box and do a quick turn around when the goalie comes out, you can lob it over them
As a European, hearing "soccer" in an English video helps me know which sport we're talking about.
I'd still argue it's actually called "football", but at least here there's no mix-up.
You guys are pumping out content on a lot of my favorite games keep it up!
I've been saying this for years, strikers was amazing. It didn't even get high praise when it came out on wii, but it's actually so fun.
I never played the old ones, but as a soccer lover I’m definitely getting the new one when it comes out. So exciting
Strikers charged was so live back in day. I need to get that game back.
Played both games so much growing up can't wait to play the new one
Strikers and Mario Tennis are no cap two of the best sports games ever lol
I'm actually so proud and happy of owning a really good condition copy of this game on GameCube. I genuinely love this game so much!!!
Though I gotta admit: if Mario Tennis gets a competitive scene and not all of other arguably better tennis games of the era, I'm gonna be pretty miffed.
That Elden Ring Keeps ad was hilarious to me lol
I was always one of the top ranked players in strikers charged back in the day on online play. There were a lot of exploits, especially with the z button, that made the game super deep and a lot of fun. There were so many ways to score and none of them involved actually shooting the ball lol. Would love to see that covered as well.
1:58 Well, it's called Soccer by 47.8% WHICH MEANS that 52.2% of the viewers call it Football.
I guess you may just need to remake the video.
Its surreal hearing the date as 20XX and it be relevant.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some mavericks to hunt.
Honestly this game plays more like hockey than soccer and I'm all for it. Hyped for the new game coming out!
i remmeber in 2009 whooping my friends with the chip shots, little did i kno it was gonna turn into a pro move lol
im so excited for the new mario strikers game. i literally jumped out of my seat when it got announced
Gotta get into the scene because I remember played like 5 seasons with my friends and exploited it
Coast 2 coast shots are killer if they’re not ready for it
Just saying if the UK scene took this competitive my God the commentary would go fucking crazy and if it's in person crazy ass chats would give it life
THIs blew my mind and introduce me into dolphin. goated video
The best soccer / football game already exist, it's called Rocket League
Would love a new Hoops games too
Mario strikers for the GameCube hands down was and is a gem 💎
man, i've been playing strikers on dolphin for at least 3 years now and had no idea there was an online functionality or discord server, let alone a competitive scene looooooool
You've been playing on Dolphin and didn't know it has Netplay?
Bruh this game is fantastic and should’ve had bigger impact, glad to see it getting its love nowadays.
I'm glad the best Mario sports games are starting to get the respect they deserve.
